I looked at both carriers boxes and they both have SM-N950U model number and N950USQU1AQH7 firmware.
How they differ then?

Same device...just come branded to carrier with carrier Firmware and bloat also locked to carrier
Thanks! They were all the same devices since Note 2 just different firmware. What I dont't understand is that the firmware is the same exact match for both ATT and TM.
Do they still cut out multilanguage interfaces from the US versions?
Tmobile does not have mobile hotspot restricted. If you have a tmo one on cricket, you can use the hotspot all you want. If an ATT phone, it wont work.

So I went to a Tmobile store and looked at the Galaxy s8+ and noticed the model was 955U not 955T
It was of course their demo unit which was strapped (tethered) to the desk which makes it impossible to feel properly in the hand... But whatever.
Curious if only the demo model was a U variant or what? I never payed attention to other models before now?
The U variant of other Samsung models, do they have Locked bootloaders? Is it only the F variant that is unlocked (bootloader)
Sent from my Rooted Galaxy S7 EDGE on Android 7.0 Nougat, here's the instructions how to do it!
The SM-G955U is suppose to be the Unlock variant of the S8+, which make it super interesting, Hope this comes with unlock bootloader

All snapdragon s7 edge have locked bootloader including the g935u so I'm assuming the same thing with the s8 hope this helps (unless someone finds a way to root s8)

With the S8 and S8+ they are using single SKU..Verizon, At&t and T-Mobile will be the same model number. Screenshot of my S8 recovery screen.
According to Samsung.com and the phones full specs they are each different

You guys think flashing another carriers firmware unlocks the missing bands?
None of the U's are bootloader unlocked. They are just network unlocked. At least starting with the S7 in my experience. Its a hopeful thought though. I hope I am wrong

That is absolutely right. Only exception being TMO will work with a prepaid MetroPCS sim and ATT with work with a Cricket sim.
That's really interesting. So I purchased a T-mobile model directly from Samsung.com (paid in full), will I possibly be able to use it on At&t?

From what I read I'm not sure how long it will take to have T-Mobile officially unlock it. They have an app for that but they have several different criteria as far as being a current customer or a prepaid versus postpaid customer. Ive never unlocked a T-mobile phone with the app or a third party unlocking service so maybe someone with examples could chime in. It does seem AT&T has an easier online unlocking method for current and non customers to simply fill out a form.
And the U models are slow with updates

I asked for some proof and you provided zero. I have to trust the carriers and the company that makes the phones. I didn't make the carriers all list a ton of random bands nobody needs and leave off the few we need in this country. I hate the carriers amd samsung trust me I want you to be right.

They make you select a carrier before checkout. The carrier unlocked version will be released in a month.
Just pick Verizon and it will be unlocked for sure day one
Ok cool that's what I was wondering. I know it's that way with my iPhone 7 I didn't know if it'd be the same for android
The simple way is to order from B&H... It's the unlocked international model SM-955F.... $840 + local tax
While that would be nice I'll be using the Samsung financing
I have ordered form very.co.uk (catalogue company) fully unlocked no carrier selection needed

But are we sure that the hardware is the same for all US models and it is as simple as flashing the appropriate firmware to get them working on other carriers?
Also, if you buy the Verizon model, it will never work on Sprint since Sprint won't whitelist it.

If you are on Sprint and you buy any other model but Sprint's model, it will not work on Sprint because Sprint won't whitelist it.
If you buy Verizon's model, it will be unlocked out of the box and if it is like the S7/7E, you can flash the GSM carrier's firmware to it and use it on the GSM carriers. But it will never work on Sprint for the reasons I stated.

It's not the same at all. With the iPhone 7, it has the firmware to run on all 4 networks. That has never been true of the Samsung androids. They only have the firmware to run on the particular carrier they are branded for.
Although the Verizon S7/7E is SIM unlocked, it won't work properly on the GSM carriers without flashing the firmware for the GSM carriers. We won't know whether you can do that for the S8/8+ until they are released. However, the Verizon model will never work on Sprint because Sprint will not whitelist the Verizon model. In contrast, Sprint will whitelist the Verizon iPhones since they have the firmware to run on all 4 carriers.
It's totally different with iPhones than with Androids.
Thanks for.clearing.everything up. I have verizon so I will be getting a verizon phone. Just wasnt sure if I would be able to switch carriers in the future

when is it going to available though??
can i buy an unlock phone in the USA and bring it back to canada and run it on a telus netwrk?
I have the AT&T variant, if I decide I want VZW network and unlock my devoce can I flash VZW firmware and it will work? VZW should activate it on theor network if it wasnt originally from them right? Also, will I get updates if I go that route? Im hoping someone did this with the S7 and knows for sure.

It worked with the S7. All hardware versions were the same. I bought a unlocked S7 and flashed the Verizon firmware on it. I got all the Verizon updates after I did it. Seems like the S8's might be the same but it seems no one has tried yet. All the US S8's and S8+'s have the same model number.

Thanks for the reply. I see the VZW firmware is out on theor forum so Ill wait and see. I cant unlock until ATT gets the imei's in theor database which could take a while. Says database maintenance.

I was looking to buy the Galaxy Note 8, and is it worth buying the Unlocked version over the ATT version? I know I will save a little money, and also have less bloatware. I could not find much info on the basebands of these phones, there would not really be any basebands the unlocked version wouldnt have that the ATT version has? I assume that it would just be smarter to get the unlocked version?
Someone correct me if I am wrong
Sorry this is somewhat unrelated to the S8+
Thanks
Somebody mentioned the carrier specific ones may get updates more frequently. Regardless, the only unlock that really matters to me is bootloader unlock. US Snapdragon S8/S8+ are not bootloader unlocked--regardless whether the model is carrier unlocked or not. Only the Chinese and Hong Kong Snapdragon S8/S8+ bootloaders can be unlocked so far. My recommendation is to pre-order the Note 8 as you were interested in that phone, but that if you were planning on sticking with the same carrier and wanted updates more frequently, getting a carrier specific Note 8 might be best.
I'm in the same situation. I currently with att prepaid, they have LTE+ (LTE advanced). I did speed test twice, getting 127mb down, 30mb up, 115mb down, 28mb up. I'm not sure if unlocked version note8 has all the LTE bands. I thinking of just getting att version and if I want to switch carrier in the future, I just pay for those unlock service.

Be careful about those assumptions, make sure the AT&T variant has all the bands needed for full rate.
Recently switched from ATT to Verizon, and ended up getting a new phone (not *really* complaining since it's the GS8+) because my 1 yr old GS7edge AT&T model didn't have support for the correct LTE bands to work properly with the Verizon network.
I'm planning on staying with the same carrier, I just figure I'd get update faster, have less bloat ware, and have more lte bands (with the unlocked version)
Isn't that all accurate?
ALL the US versions have the same exact hardware and support the same exact bands. The ONLY difference is the carrier specific firmware. And you can change that by flashing whichever firmware you want through ODIN.

I have both S8 T-mobile and S8 unlocked. They have identical LTE bands. Moreover, when inserting SIM cards from different providers the CSC is changed to that provider and some specific options are enabled. I put in T-mobile SIM card and used it without any issues. Put in Vodaphone Europe SIM card and CSC changed from TMB to XAA (unlocked) and phone still had all LTE bands available and worked. I'm sure it's the same for ATT. Also, from previous experience if you get ATT version and change providers you'll not get updates anymore unless you go to Samsung to have your phone updated, as all OTA's go through ATT servers.
Go for unlocked.
So can anyone tell me what these region codes like LRA VZW mean?
https://samsung-firmware.org/model/SM-G930U/
Which one should I choose? Bought a Sprint S7 in China(coz it's twice as cheap as those sold in China). Use the local CMCC network. I did install the TMK version. Works fine except for a few minor bugs. I'd like to know what these other region codes stand for.

The codes represent the country/region and/or the mobile carrier/network the device is to be used on.

Could you be more specific as to what each of these code names stands for? All of those downloads are for G930U, which, unless I'm mistaken, basically means these softwares are found on the UNLOCKED S7's and that once installed, no matter where you bought your S7 from, be it Sprint or Verizon or AT&T or whatever, your phone should behave just like an unlocked S7, independent of any carriers(or regions?) So what's the difference between, say, G930U SPR and G930U ATT? And what about all the other ones, like LRA XAA ACG AIO VMU...? I can't seem to google anything out about them. Can you shed some light on it? Thanks
I would've posted a screenshot of the linked page but from my phone that seems kinda hard. Sorry for the inconvenience!
