Hi.
As some of you have expressed the desire to know how to create your own watch faces, I have started working on a tutorial. To begin with, it will be a slide presentation. I will also try to create a video tutorial, but time does not allow for that right now.
Here's a quick sampler. The aim is to create something that is easy to follow, where you can benefit from the 9 months of trial & error I went through to get from zero ability to a more advanced stage in using the Gear Watch Designer tool. I believe this fast-track method if used with sincerity will, hopefully, allow some of you to reach my level in perhaps 9 days, not nine months. Try out this sampler tutorial and see how easy it is to create nice watch faces. The components are also displayed, which you can save and use in the tutorial.
Thanks.

so once I've made my watch face, how do I share it with a friend without putting it on the marketplace?

Hi.
If you received the recent update, then Samsung have now given you a share function. You should long press the watch face on your watch, it will bring up 2 icons. The one on the left is a share button. Press it and follow the prompts.
Otherwise, you can send your friend the GWD file for the watch face. However, they will need to load it in the Gear Watch Designer tool and build it to load onto their watch.
Thanks.

so if I share it that way it brings up my contacts, so I figure I just put them in there and it sends. If I do it this way, they don't need GWD?

Yes, that's the idea. I did try it when I received my update, and went as far as doing the send to my contact from the watch, but have not checked if it got there. If you are successful, maybe you will let us know the result.
Thanks.

when you click on the link it sends, I get this:
---------- Post added at 11:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:43 AM ----------
looks like it's trying to link to it on the samsung app store which it is not there because I haven't put it on there and they probably won't approve it

You could send a message to Samsung support to get clarification. As far as I know, they have not provided much info on how this new feature should work. I would not have expected it to have any connection with the app store, however, it would be good to know.
Thanks.
is it possible to show the seconds hand moving in always on like the stock watch faces?

Hi.
No for both. Samsung has not given us the option to place moving objects or any motion in the AOD. Reason being, it was developed to stay on always and to save battery drain, they don't allow motion as yet.
Thanks.

You have to lower how bright the images are on the actual design for the AOD. When you select the images in GWD, move to the right panel and you can set brightness levels there (you can use opacity too). This includes hands, face, any image that is in the AOD.
I made a watch face way back in the days of GWD 1.2
I’d like to make another but my old head forgot how to add 3 things that the old one had.
1. Tap the top and battery % would show
2. Tap right and day and date would show
3. Tap left and steps would show
Could any kind person point me in the right direction to achieve this in GWD 1.5
Promise I will write it down for next time.
Kind regards,

The process is pretty much the same for all 3.
- In the left side add Text box (Normal Text), place it where you want to press each function
- On the right side in the "Properties" top right side click the down arrow next to the 3 horizontal bars and "Set as button"
- Choose the Action tab.
- In the drop down next to "Action", select "Open App", and choose the app you want to open.
Edit** and you have to set each text font opacity slider to 0% so the text becomes see through

Many thanks for your reply.
It has now brought back some of old memories of doing it years ago and the job is done.
The only question I'd like to ask is, how to delete old/unwanted watch feces from GWD? It seems to keep files at 3 different places on my computer and I'm sure it's embedded in some file like log or xml. After deleting the old .gwd and .tpk files, they still show up when GWD started.
Kind regards,

Just in case anyone wants to know, in the end, the solution was to edit the config.xml file and voila, it doesn't show any more when I start GWD.
Regards,
2 quick questions from a newbie:
Have anyone found a way to change the animation fps in the 1.5 version?
Is it possible to build customizable watchfaces in gear watch designer? Fx include 5 different color versions? And if.. how?
Creating a watch face for my brother when I don’t have a watch
So my brother told me that if I learned how to make a watch face, he would wear WHATEVER face I created for a week.
Long story short, I’ve created a really nice Hello Kitty one. There is a little icon where the Kitty’s red bow starts to disappear as the battery goes down. I’m pretty impressed with myself.
So is it possible to get him the watch face when I don’t even have a watch? I tried to build it, but it looks like it requires me to test it out on my own (non-existent) watch.
Thoughts?

First of all I would like to thank the users below for letting me to use their work
BT73 for his OP "Making Your Action screen like me",
lyriquidperfection for his great Touch tools for HTC apllication,
Marcdu81 for his very useful HD2connections cab and
Dinik for his great HD2 Iconset
makeveral for letting me integrate his very useful ram sweeper in my cab.
In "EndKey replacement" I used their work or some of their work, edited some things and I came up with this app as a result.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this app is to replace the EndKey function with a more useful and with more options one.
INSTALLING
Just install the cab and reset.
EDITING
You can change the functions of the buttons by editing the keys that reside in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Biotouch\ActionScreen] with a registry editor.
1. Open HKLM\Software\HTC\Biotouch\ActionScreen\APP_0-11. Each number corresponds to a button
2. Change "Path" to point to your desired app.
3. Edit "Param" if you want to pass parameters to the app.
For more editing, like background and buttons please see BT73's OP
UPDATE
Now when you press a button you also have an icon showing up. Thanks to k8sh's idea
UPDATE 2
I replaced the camera button with Enter bootloader. Preview below.
UPDATE 3
I made the buttons to get pressed like k8sh suggested. see preview 3
UPDATE 4
Background changed to black.
Different key press, now the button gets smaller when you press it. (see preview 4)
Changed rotation.exe and now only changes clockwise and if you press again back to portrait.
UPDATE 4
I replaced some exe's that handled the connections with JMLcomm. Now it's smaller in size and flight mode and DATA on/off should work for everyone.
New GTX style
UPDATE 5
RAM Sweeper is now integrated to cab and replaces the rotation button
PREVIEW
GTX Style thanks to colossus_r
Looks good, will have to try this out.
Thanks!
This is so awesome. Thank you for sharing! And thanks to BT73, lyquidperfection, and Marcdu81 for making this simple but extremely useful add-on possible.
Very nice,good job !
I hate to bug you but nothing happened. I tried installing in SC and device but nothing happened. Should I be doing anything else? This should pop up when I perform a short press on the end key, right (the red hard button)?

please try it and give some some feedback because I see you have the TMOUS HD2 version and there might be some differences.

Got it. I was doing a short press only before. Long press definitely works as it should.
I also noticed that the window only pops up for a few seconds. Any reg tweak to make it longer or stay since the app can be exited by pressing any of the hard buttons?
Also when you press a button (icon), you can't really tell that you are pressing it right?
I forgot to add that data disconnect does not work for me. Is this the same issue as Marcdu81's HD2 Connexions? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6074894&postcount=101
All in all I like it and I will be using it. If I follow BT73's steps I can substitute a few buttons with ease?
good job man
Thanks

1. For the window popping out for a few seconds I haven't seen any reg entries that could change that. Although I'll try to find if there's anything we can do.
2. For the buttons not showing what you press I did it on purpose because I didn't like the result when I putted some icons. The bmp format (used by the app) looses all the transparency from the icons I use. I have something in mind and when its ready I'll post an updated cab here.
3. No it's not this problem as launching DataOnOff.exe from the action screen does not involve any shortcuts. The only shortcut to the program is written in registry and it's correct there. DataOnOff.exe can take several parameters (try running it from \windows\actionscreen folder without any parameters to see a list of available options) I use "-gprstoggle" which should toggle on and off but it doesn't work correctly to my phone either. It's only disconnecting the GPRS and not connecting it. (that's not a problem for me though as I only want it to disconnect).
Thanks for your feedback and your thoughts.
I edited my post and added that the data on/off is actually just Data OFF. It does not work for data ON. This is the same for Touch X Data Disconnect (hence, the name). Does Marcdu's work as Data On/Off or is it one-way only?

I just realized that it is also not an issue for me since if I don't have wifi, gprs will be activated automatically by whatever app that accesses it, if off.
I have an idea for the icon when pressed, the icon must already have the background as that of the action screen because of the transparency then perhaps changed it to grayscale or whatever is best for an icon when pressed. (See attached figure).
However, a plain dark background must be used like the one you are using now.

Hey thanks for the acknowledgment! I installed the v2 and there are a few kinks, the pressed icons are a bit misplaced relative to the original colored icons. I took screen shots of all the icons (zip file) so maybe you can play around with the x y positions when you have time?

It's supposed to be missplaced so you can see them when you press them.
If you want I will try to make them seem larger when you press them.

Here is another suggestion. You can crop the pressed icon so that there is a little more on top (screen shot) and you can align the icon with a slight offset in the vertical direction (so it looks like it is moved downwards only when pressed, covering the icon label entirely). I attached another screen shot of what it will look like when pressed if my description does not make sense.
It's only a suggestion. You always have the option to ignore me.

Just out of curiosity which one do you prefer the one with bootloader or with camera?

Actually, I don't even know what the boot loader is for. Maybe if I do, I will choose that one since Scilor came out with this new tweak where you can use the volume key to take photos and it works for me. But it may or may not work in some phones so you probably should not include it even if you want to (and it is only version 0.1).
(11-17-2010) UPDATE: My main purpose for starting this thread was in hopes that some developer would port the iphone version of the Star Trek Communicator for us Android Trek fans. My prayers have been answered!!!

Since my method described below was a lame attempt to simulate the app, I see no reason for doing it unless you want to have it as a livewallpaper/lockscreen (and you have nothing better to do)! Honestly, the app is the way to go.
Original Post...
I've been trying to figure out how to duplicate this iphone app:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1TCJzhzXZM
After some fiddling around I came up with this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4KFLk2HFDE
Here's how to do it...
1. Download these 2 jpgs (right click and save image as) and stick them somewhere on your SDcard.
The homescreen wallpaper:
The lockscreen:
2. Install "Earth Live" live wallpaper and Map Pack from the market. There is a donate version as well but the free one works for our purposes.
3. Download this zip that contains the map pattern jpg and 2 wav files. Unzip them to somewhere convenient.
4. Install "LockBot" from the market. I use the paid version but I think the free one has all of the functions (unlock sound and shake-to-unlock) that we need.
OK, now we have all of our apps and files. let's build our theme.
5. Look in your apps and select the "Map Pack". Let it install the files to your SD card and then let it uninstall the installer. Go to your SD card and you'll see a folder called "EarthRot". Open it and there's another folder called "maps" which contains the pattern files for some of the planets in Earth Live. Remember the files you unzipped earlier? Take the "globetrotter.jpg" (you can actually rename it to any of the other planet skins that you don't want to keep) and copy it into the "maps" folder. Let it over-write the file in there (you can copy the file that will be over-written somewhere safe if you want). Now you can close all of that.
6. On your phone press "menu", "Wallpaper" and select "Live wallpapers". Choose "EarthRot" and press "Settings". Pick "Backgound" and then "Choose background". In the pop-up menu, pick "From Gallery" and then navigate to where you put the "COMM-face.jpg". This will be your live wallpaper background.
7. (a) Go back one screen to the Earth Live settings menu, pick "Maps" and then "Map". Scroll around and find "Globetrotter Home World" (or whatever planet you saved our modified map file as) and then pick it. While we're on this menu screen, make sure that "Orbiting moon" is NOT checked.
(b) Now back out to the previous menu screen and select "Globe aspect" and then "Globe size". Move the slider back a bit and then select "OK". Now select "Globe y position" and move the slider forward a bit and select "OK". Go back one screen again and make sure that "Natural Rotation" and "Planet natural axis" are both unchecked. Now Hit the Back button two times to get back to the preview screen. Our goal is to get the spinning globe to fit into the round window as closely as possible (NOTE: The newer version of Earth Live seems to offset the custom background on the preview screen and also after you "set wallpaper". When on the home screen, slide over to the next screen and then back and it will center the wallpaper). Keep adjusting the size, Y position (and probably X position too) until it fits pretty well.
(c) Select the setting "Globe behavior" and make sure everything is checked except "Slide rotation". Go back to the preview screen and you can now move the globe around with your finger. I put mine so that the axis is pointing straight at me. This makes the classic "moire" pattern of the communicator from the original Star Trek series. If you look at the link you can see other moire patterns used in Star Trek.
8. (a) Open "LockBot" and select "My Themes". Decide which style lockscreen you want (I like the "Galaxy" style) press on it and from the pop-up menu, select "Edit" and it will take you to that lockscreen. Press the phone's menu button and select "Background" then select "SD Card File" and navigate to wherever you saved the "com-lock.jpg".
(b) Now press menu again and select "Sound" and then "File" and navigate to where you saved the "com-chirp.wav" file.
(c) Now press the menu button again and select "Save". Before that, you can make some additional clock edits if you want (I selected "None" to get a cleaner look).
(d) Back out to the lock style selection screen and press the phone's menu button and select "Playlist". Uncheck all of the styles except the one you edited.
(e) Back out to the LockBot main screen (with the padlock and android) and then press the phone's menu button and select "Config". Make sure that "Enable", Unlock Sound", "Unlock Menu", "Shake Unlock", "Lock Long Press Home Key" and "Prevent Wake Up" are all checked. Now press "Shake Sensitivity" and while holding the phone firmly and securely, flick your wrist like you've seen Captain Kirk do. The pop-up should say "OK", if not, do it again until it takes. You may have to come back to this later and re-do it. LockBot's a bit buggy and the Shake Unlock doesn't always work.
That's it! If you have problems post away and I'll try to help.
...and don't forget... Live Long and Prosper!
EDIT: Whenever I reboot my phone the globe map loses it's transparency and ends up looking like a beach-ball. To fix this, go into the Earth Live settings and temporarily switch the map to "Death Star 2". Make sure to set wallpaper with that one! Once you're done, go back and re-set it to the map name you were using before and you'll get the cool moire effect back (at least until you reboot again)!
This happens because I cheated. The jpegs don't support transparency but pngs do (notice that the only png in the maps is "Death Star 2"). I tried just using that one for my moire but it maps differently than the others and never looked right. Instead, I made a png with transparency in it and just named it as a jpg.
Reserved for some ridiculous reason.
Bumpskiola!
Pretty neat, and instructions were clear. I like it, but since im not much of a star trek fan im probably going to mod this a bit while still keeping your core method. Great work mate

LockBot replaced my lockscreen automagically. Are you using stock sprint ROM or one of the custom ROMs?
You could remove HTCLockscreen.apk and HTCLockscreen.odex but I think it may give you the messed-up vanilla lock.

HELP... Please
Greetings Im trying to use your "Tutorial Make a Star Trek Communicator!" on my HTC Android Incredible.
Ive completed steps 1-5 no problems...
However on step 6 on my phone I go to personalize, home wallpaper, live wallpaper and select EarthRot. Its at this point it just sits there and does nothing while message says loading live wallpaper, I left it that way for several minutes. Then I clicked on settings, after about 20 seconds I get an error saying application earthrot(in process com.seb.SLWP) is not responding, I can select force close, wait and report, I selected force close then the application closes.
Please advise as this looks so cool on your video.

Please advise as this looks so cool on your video.

Try getting Earth Live to load without the modified files.
The incredible may be using different size jpgs for the maps. If so, just modify the globetrotter one from my zip to be the same size as the original.
You may also have to re-size the jpgs posted above to fit your phone (not sure about that).
Good luck!
got it to work but now have two other issues.
1. original htc screen lock wont go away.
2. lockbot wont change wallpaper when I select the file.

I haven't used this in a while and it seems the "Earth Live" live wallpaper app has undergone some changes that make this mod stop working.
I can't get the wallpaper to change either. I had to change the original communicator wallpaper to get it to select the whole image.
I tried jpg and png but neither worked. I will mess with it when I get time and see if I can figure it out.
If anyone figures it out, post back here!
EDIT: I got it to work! Use the wallpaper above. I am working on the other changes and will update the first post when I'm done.
OK, got it all working again. Files updated in first post.
Try uninstalling EarthRot and install it again and see if that fixes the problem. It works great on my EVO and even when I restart my phone everything is set. Great job with this love it

Hmmm, mine is still getting lost after a reboot.
Are you using a ROM that has A2SD enabled? I noticed at the first running of Earth Live there is a warning that mentions problems with running it from the SD card. I may try disabling A2SD and then doing the uninstall/re-install thing.
Thanks for your help and I'm glad you like it!

Anyone knows how to make a watch face with Gear Watch Designer with multiple background or index options?
I want to make a face with the option for the user to choose bg og index color, but I can't find out how.
There are several other faces with options so there must be a way to do this.
None?
No one wants to share? I know someone in here knows it!

There is a way to add "Actions" to things. I haven't played around with it too much but you can swap images on touch. That's what I had gathered.
Or they do it on Tizen SDK
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
What you could do is create new images with different merged backgrounds and indexes. You then add a background that has an index as part of the picture. With that image selected, go over to the right and choose action and create button. Click the action tab and under first drop down select change picture. You can then add up to six other pictures that have an index included. Align all the pictures to fit in the circle. Then once on a watch, you just tap the picture and it will cycle through the backgrounds with their indexes.

The program just requires some trial and error. I learned how to use it by modifying preexisting unlocked template faces.
Although it's fun to create something yourself, it's very easy to find practically any design that you want online.
You can leave the designs as they are, drastically change them in some way that suits you or just create something from scratch.
Next just sync the face to your watch via WiFi.
Furthermore, you can create a developer account and upload your own creations to sync with your Samsung account.
It literally took me 10 minutes to submit the developer application and get accepted.

I join the question. How to change the color of the arrows on tap, without prejudice to other functions. For example, I want to change the background color and the color of the hour and minute hands. At the same time, if you add different types of arrows to the "action" section, the background change function is blocked, since the layers are located below the arrows. I saw how the developers made a separate place on the screen for the function of changing the color of the arrows. But I did not understand how to do this.

It can be done in GWD.
Create a "Hot Spot" with a Background or Image.
In properties window click on the 3 hash marks in upper right. Choose Set As Button.
Still in properties window click on Action tab.
Click + to add action.
In the None dropdown of Action section select Open App.
In the None dropdown of Action Detail section select --Custom--
In the App Id box type
com.samsung.stopwatch-wc1
This creates an area that when tapped will open the Stopwatch application.
Of course you must size the area and use an image suitable to your design. I typically use a background that is a "blank" png image so that I can position it anywhere on the watchface without obscuring whatever is on the face.
thank you, will do that for him... i was just thinking what it would be nice if you could keep the watch showing and then have a small dial with stop watch

Don't think you can do that with GWD. Probably can with Tizen IDE, but that is beyond my capabilities.

Hi,
I know how to create an Action and assign a Tap or Double-Tap action to change an image, but if I am using a digital watch face and want to tap to change the color of the time display (as opposed to a background image), how would I go about doing that?
For example, if my default digital watch face shows the time digits in red, how can I set an action to change it to orange upon the Tap Action, then yellow, then green, etc.?
Thanks in advance!

There are a ton of watch faces out there that change their font color when you tap on the time digits. Surely someone knows how to create this effect in GWD. Alternatively, is there a way to view the xml from purchased or downloaded watch faces on my watch? Just to view the code for that action?
Thanks in advance!!
i was curious about the same thing.
so what i did was copied the .wgt file of a face that had that feature as it was being sent to my watch. root is needed to intercept the transfer from phone to watch.
renamed to .zip, unzipped and looked through the files.
its hard to explain but there is no special coding in the xml for this. it is basically using layers and a transparent png as a font.
i have never shared a gwd file so not sure if you can but i am willing to do a very basic time face and send it to you, if you would like. i will include all files so you can see what is happening.
let me know.
Hi Stealo,
That sounds awesome. I would love to see how this is done. I'd root my Note 8 but I don't think the Verizon Note 8 can be rooted safely. Anyone correct me if that is not right.
Anyway - yes, please do share whatever you find, Stealo, and let me know how I can help.

ok cool. i will try and get it done tonight, and post.

Ok, so i started writing a "how to" and it got way out of control, :silly:.
I cant take any credit for this, all i did was pull apart someone elses work and learn from it. The attached is my work but built in the same way as the other person did it. I hope this doesnt upset anyone. I will never share the original persons work.
I have attached all the files you need for this to work including my gwd file & tpk file. Im not sure if you will be able to import it into your GWD but give it ago. if not start a new face and rebuild it from the resources.
At any point you get stuck let me know and i will help you out.
Hi Stealo,

Everything worked like a charm! I got one error about the TPK needing to be rebuilt when trying to deploy to my watch (unsure of the issue), but I chose only version 3 and it worked perfectly. Maybe my watch needs to have OS 4? I have a Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.
Anywho - now I am going to learn how bitmap fonts work and how to convert a TTF font that I own, to a bitmap font. :good:
This is awesome! Thanks again for helping me get over this hurdle. It was a big one for me.

i am using gwd 1.6.1 i think which lets you build for os 4.0 and lower.
the font in the example was the fortnite font.
very simple task but very boring to make, but you will only need to do once for each digit 0-9.
are you familiar with adobe illustrator or photoshop?
simply make the canvas the size you need with the same colour or pattern of the face, type a single number, adjust its size so it just fits height and width, cut it out so the number is transparent, save it as a png to preserve the transparency.
much more to it but like i said let me know if you get stuck.
regarding the background cut to make, i think i made it 200px wide and 80px high.
so that means you can fit 4 digits at 50px wide X 80px high, which is important for making the font.

Makes sense. I have Photoshop so will upgrade GWD and open the files up in Photoshop to have a look. Thanks again!
I got the set-up working with my own bitmap font and clickable button to change the colors - the caveat now is when a single digit shows up - the mask layer shows up from underneath the single digit, since it gets centered, and the mask is only half the width (one digit's width as opposed to two digit widths).
See my picture of both cases (still need to work out anti-aliasing artifacts).
Any ideas on how to work around that, yet still only use single digit hours?
EDIT: Just to be clear: my background is black, so other than the digits, there should be no purple color coming through as shown for the single digit of one.
Thanks,
Swoop

hey swoop,
good to see you making progress.
just off the top of my head
at the the bottom of the screen is a time line. so you could make 2 backgrounds and have 1 apear between the hours of 1 to 9 and the other from 10 to 12.
read about the conditional lines,
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch/design/watch-designer/gear-watch-dev
to fix the auto centering maybe align your text to the right so a single digit will snap right when changing.
i use only 24hr time, not sure why but always have. if i get time i will try it out and see.
regarding artifacts, i generally use illustrator, which produces cleaner images. if you dont have illustrator you can dowload a free alternative called inkscape, i think, or an online vector converter.
i always make an image twice as large if possible then clean it up and scale it down. im still learning also, so what i do may not be right but it works for me.
in the mean time let me know if what i said is right.
Thanks, Stealo.
I have Adobe CS 6 with Illustrator, so will try that next as well as start working on a timeline-based position of the background. Great idea! That way, I can leave the single digits centered (I hope), which looks better in my design.
Cheers!

hey sorry, dont use xda as much anymore.
You need to have a rooted device (phone/tablet) first, and a good file explorer, no root needed on watch at all. i cant give specifics as i dont use the devices anymore, i can try and point you in the right direction though.
what i did was monitor a folder in the WEAR app root directory on my phone, when i downloaded an app from the store it would store it on my phone for maybe ten seconds, then transfer to my watch.
Using your file explorer you can copy it and paste it to a new location before the transfer ends.
Rename it .zip, extract, learn and explore.
Like i said i am not 100% if it is still possible as i no longer use both devices. Please dont steal anybodies work though.
Good luck.

I want to know the same thing. Basically I want to to double tap on say 3 o'clock area and have hour hand change images/color. How is this possible? Yes, you can change background defining itself as a buton and add "change image" action but how can you change other layer images by double tapping on another layer?
