Pixel 2 app updates on Play Store - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I have about 23 updates pending on the Play Store that I have not installed. Quite a few of these are System apps which I feel belong in the System partition and not Data. I'm rooted with Magisk but hesitant to update and move the apps manually being that once System is mounted RW it ruins your ability to receive OTA updates. Not the biggest deal considering I could just flash the updated factory images when available but it's nice to have the convenience of updating via OTA. Maybe I'm just being "OCD" about this but I just feel that System apps belong on the System ROM and having them update in DATA is an "untidy" approach to doing this not to mention it's taking up my space on my user storage. (Good thing I sprung for the 128GB). My question is, how are you guys approaching this and am I alone in feeling this way?

The apps are system apps. But they're updated through the play store. It's much better than having to wait for whole OTA's just to fix one app.

Update them. It's not an issue.

Thanks for your reply. What happens when a new OTA comes out and the apps are in there or updated further? Will the ones in DATA remain as well? I'm assuming they just go inactive and it will be up to me to go in there and delete them. Please clarify.

You don't have to worry about them being installed to /data. The system knows what to do, if the version installed with an OTA is newer than the version installed from the Play store it will automatically be uninstalled and you will have the newest version. You're question is really kind of strange TBH, hopefully I've been able to help.

Yes, that was helpful. I didn't know it would be automatically uninstalled when a newer version exists. I've been using Android as a power user since 2012 and haven't encountered system critical apps being updated via Play Store. I never stayed on stock ROM very long and this is my first actual Google phone. Perhaps this comes across as a strange concern to you, but when I mentioned "OCD," I wasn't using it as a figure of speech ?. I like keeping my computers and phones file structures extremely neat and organized and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Finally, I was also wondering if it could lead to any security vulnerabilities having an app like Dialer existing in Data/App. (I'm paranoid too). Nevertheless, I will install as you recommended. This thread can be closed now.

Problems with Titanium Backup's "Integrate system app updates into ROM" feature.
I searched, but didn't find any documentation on this feature, so I did the adventurous thing and tried it out. It's supposed to replace the system apps in the ROM with the updated apk, therefore saving space in the system memory. But after the batch finished, all of the updated apps were completely gone...the originals AND the updates were deleted. Since there isn't a way to "undo" this function, I had to reflash the ROM. Does anyone know more about this option? Does it work with any ROM?

If your rooted you can replace them yourself.

I faced the same probs. But here is a few tips to get back your app:
1. Use titanium backup, run Batch, uninstall those apps that you have moved to ROM (which already highlighted in Red)
2. Find install apks for those apps in Google, reinstall it
3. Reboot your device
4. All app icons have back
Have fun, mate!!

I had the same problem; with the Android Market app disappeared. I have tried to re-install it the way you suggest, but the app stops working when I start any download from the market. Even reset the phone to factory settings, but I have the same problem. Any clue?
Thanks!!!
I just did a hot restart and it was fine for me.

I was having a similar problem with my Galaxy Note on ICS 4.04.
Whenever I tried to integrate the Play Store it would delete both the update and the old app and I would have to reinstall the APK.
I also noticed recently that a few other updates that appeared to be integrated successfully reappeared in the list of available updates to integrate, like they reverted to user apps after a reboot?
What finally fixed it for me was selecting the option in Titanium Backup Pro *Menu; Preferences; Advanced Settings; Check the box "Auto-integrate sys Dalvik into"
I then did a backup of my launcher app, long pressed on the backup and selected "Convert to System App", then single pressed on the app backup, selected restore then selected app data only"
It prompted me to reboot, after reboot when I checked the"batch, integrate updates into system ROM" all the apps which I was having problems with had disappeared from the list, and appear to be integrated now.
I don't know if it was the reboot or enabling the option in Titanium Backup, but something changed.
I have some problems also
I used Titanium mainly to integrate the updates into rom in my previous htc sensation and in my galaxy s3 and it worked fine with them. Now it does not work properly with my galaxy s4. After the integration some apps crash, Chrome, Dropbox. Some of them only delete the update and leave the old one in rom. If I go to google play the update is there to be installed again or some apps just prompt for the update when opened. I sent an email to the developer but I have not response. I have used it successfully in my previous phones but it is not working in this one. Any help is appreciated.

Yep, I'm having this exact problem. First the apps didn't show up, so I performed a hot restart. They're all back now, but Dropbox, Chrome, G+ and others that were integrated are all crashing now.
I imagine it's mostly to so with new security features with the S4. If you're using an S4 please stay away from this feature until it's officially recognised as an issue by the TitaniumBackup developer. I'll reflash PDA shortly and report back if that resolves the problem.

I did reflash the phone with the stock firmware and everithing is good. I have tried some apps but it did not work. I just leave them there until titanium backup is updated. This is the most used feature for me and now is not working.

Sorry, I have been busy to come back. Well, some work, others no. Chrome did not work but I did google Maps, google play, and several other updates. I did not mess with ChatOn since if something goes wrong it could break S voice and S translator. I just did now Google music and Flipboard. Usually I have to reboot in order to have the shortcut in the apps or to fix the name of them. For example, after integrate flipboard is in the drawer with the name and no icon, it launched fine, google music was fine and worked fine. After reboot the icon came back. The only problem is that if does not work then I have to convert the system app to user in order to make it work. Yesterday I converted the jelly bean photosphere camera to system and it was converted but did not work. It force close, then I tried to converted to user app and it took a long time and just was frozen there. I stopped TB but the camera disapear from the drawer, since rebooting fix the icon or name problem, I did it. My phone did not pass the samsung galaxy logo on boot. It was just a black screen after the logo and pressing the power button did not power on or off when I pressed, only when I released. Lucky me that I did a NAND backup before this process and still I could access download mode and the CWM which I used to restore my phone with the backup in my external card. After everything was as before I started. Now I will be more careful when I do this doing a backup before starting.
Samsung Link update integration did not work, force close. Samsung Hub worked but when press the back button to close then force close. Group play seems to work since it opens and go to the start page and no problem when I press the back button.
Still having same problem
Several programs quit working after converting apps to rom. I couldn't get them to work and finally put the locked rom back in, then unlocked it again. I have a verizon galaxy s4 me7 sch-I545 and the update didn't help here.
i want to know if i do this method, does the phone memory will get smaller if i do this again if the system apps getting new update?
hey there,
i have to grab out this thread because i have problems too. almost every app i integrate into system rom force closes, when i try to start it.
even chmod a+x didn't make it better (but the other apps in /system/app are not executable, so this had no sense).
i'm using the latest cm11 nightly for the motorola photon q. is there a known solution?
I have the same issue with this function as rdefranx.
After the integrate process, all updates are fine and i have the old versions again which i have to update. Repeated the process with single apps with showing same results again.
I also sent an so to the developer, but that's a shame: You never ever get an answer if you have a problem with titanium backup.
The app is good and helped me a lot. But shame on the non existing support. Really disappointing and unprofessional. Oh yes: i paid for the app. Thank you.
Hi, I just quit using his feature. I don't know if will work with my note 3 because I don't want to have problems. I will be subscribing to this thread in case a solution is found.
Also happened to me 4 days ago using a Moto X. Except for me it also deleted the Google keyboard & play store among others.
So I was left with no keyboard to type with and no play store to download from. After a factory rest it meant that by having no keyboard I couldn't even type anything on my phone to create a google account to restore the aps & Keyboard with. I had to reflash the whole rom again, and will stay clear of integrating the apks. I did this 4 days ago, so i'm not sure if titanium has updated since then.
Same problem with me. LG G2 Mini Official KK4.4.2 rooted, after Integrating system apps in ROM almost all of them crashing. Don't think that has to do with titanium, but with the android version. I used tha feature on my old LG P350 (stock rom+cm) and worked perfectly. But now in kitkat is messing up. Btw i'm using the latest version of titanium pro

[Q] Google Keyboard Issue

Hello,
Each day when I go into the Play Store to check for updates it tells me that 'Google Keyboard' has an update available. I go ahead and update but the next day it's asking me again to update. This has gone on for several days now. I'm sure there really isn't a update so often.
I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 (Verizon) with Goodness ROM v10.0.4.1. I really like this ROM and would hate to change but I may have to if this continues.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce
Hi there,
I had a similar issue running mastamoon's unofficial 4.3 build for CyanogenMod 10.2, and even on his unofficial CM 10.1 build.
What I ended up doing, as I recall, was completely uninstalling the app and reinstalling it from the play store. I also have Swype installed on my GS3 (currently running the above unofficial 4.3 CM), so I've stuck with that for the 'mo, but try removing the app altogether and reinstalling to see if that helps.
Do you have any other apps installed, such as Titanium Backup or ROM Manager?

Strange. When I look in the Play Store, Google Keyboard is listed there, and I do have the uninstall option on my phone. Try that first, but if you have no joy, proceed below:
If you have TiBU (even the free version, as I recall), you can go to the Backup/Restore tab and scroll down to Google Keyboard.
Long press that, and then you'll be presented with the following options below:
In the first picture (on the left that ends in 47_1.png) are the initial options that appear in TiBU. Swipe left (if you need to) to see something similar to the picture on the right (that ends in 54_1.png).
Right there is the uninstall option, which should work.
Once that's successful, you should be able to re-download the app from the Play store.
Also, a reboot may be necessary after the titanium backup option, if you had to go that route, just fyi.

Hello,
Google Keyboard is listed in the Play Store. I uninstalled it and then I noticed that it said that there was an update available. It sounds like this app is part of the OS and can't be removed. I have no idea what to do at this point short of trying a different ROM.
Thanks for helping.

Have you tried going into Settings>Apps, flipping over to all apps, and clearing the data/removing the updates that way?
What about Titanium? Any luck there?

Hey,
I uninstalled the keyboard and immediately it says that there is an update available in the Play Store. I did as you suggested by going into Settings/Apps/All but the program is not there. The same with Tit BU...the file is not there. Can't understand why the OS is staying that there is an update with the program being gone?
Thanks,

That's very strange indeed. The only other possibility I could think of, is to switch to another ROM (the CyanogenMod official nightlies have always been good to me), but if you're feeling daring, there's always the unofficial builds from @mastamoon that I linked to a few replies back.
There's also a possibility of finding the actual app in some long-buried system folder. If you use ES File Explorer with root access enabled, try searching for Google keyboard or any combination thereof, and deleting that way.
What about making a backup of your current installation, re-flashing your current ROM, and then wiping the dalvik/cache/etc? If you need to restore anything after that, use TiBU to restore only the app information instead of the data (you'll most likely lose information such as high scores and whatnot from the games you have installed).
You could also switch to another keyboard entirely, such as SwiftKey, Swype or a myriad of others available on the play store, and set that as your default.

TwistingSoul,
Last night I configured SwiftKey (paid version) and set it as my default keyboard. This morning when I turned on my S3 and checked for any updates in the Play Store, The Google Keyboard did NOT show up! I think my problem has been solved, thanks to you! I really appreciate your assistance.
BTW, what other ROM's would you consider to very good, besides Goodness? What do you think of JellyBam? I tried it (v9.1) but my camera froze up so I removed it. I would like to give it a try again sometime.
Have a good Sunday!
Bruce
Way to go! You did all of the hard work, so kudos to you.
As far as your ROM question, I've only ever run CyanogenMod, and various AOKP variants thereof. Hope you can find something that suits your needs.

Possibility of Gmail Downgrade on Android L?

Hey guys,
I'm running Lollipop on my nexus 5 and totally hate the new Gmail app for various ui reasons. The rest of the OS I generally like. I'd like to downgrade to the previous 4.9 version of the app to get the old ui back, but just simply trying to install the apk doesn't seem to work. Since it's a system app, I was thinking about replacing the apk with root Explorer. What do you guys think? Possible to do?
Does the install fail? As with all previous versions, they've been installable.
You may just have to learn to live with it though or find an alternative app.

Yeah the install fails. I figured it out though. First what I did was freeze the original app through titanium backup, and then it allowed me to install the old version. Has been working great since. Renaming the app in the system and then trying to install the old version didn't work - it installed, but just crashed right away.

Yeah you can't have two apps the same. Its not based on package name either. So you can rename them all you want but that won't work

Well I uninstalled all updates to the lollipop version (5.0) and then tried to rename the gmail apk in the system so the system wouldn't recognize it anymore. That removed the app and allowed me to install version 4.9, but after installing all it did was crash. I undid my changes and then tried to freeze the app in TB, which worked and allowed me to install version 4.9apk, which works great now. And then I just told the market not to update it to 5.0. I'm a fan of the older design on this app. Much more usable. The rest is okay and I like the new design.
Android likes to wait until ram is full. Then it clear ram when it needs it. This leads to lag since unlike iOS the ui is on the same thread(stupid). Also, android uses garbage collection which uses more ram unlike arc.
So, clearing processes does help but then it just builds up again.
With keyboards running at 40mb and gmail at 60mb this is only going to get worse.
There is also cache clearing that might help... But which cache doesn't lose settings? I'm also beginning to think that a lot of photos can slow things but I don't really know why since that should be static storage and nothing to do with RAM
I would really like to know how you managed to install gmail version 4.9 on lollipop... I have a oneplus one and I just got the paid version of titanium backup to try what you said worked for you - freezing gmail then installing a 4.9 APK, and while it looks like the freezing worked, when I try to install 4.9 it just says "App not installed".. no details or anything else. What else can I try?

Have you tried rebooting into recovery and wiping the dalvik cache and then trying to install and old version. I don't have a reason for an older version and right about now I don't really want to have to restore a backup if I bork it doing that

Congrats! Just saw this. Glad you got it to work. I've sort of given up /in to Google at this point since my note 4 is not rooted. If it was I would downgrade again. Hope others find this thread still useful.

Apps randomly deleted (both system and user apps!)

On my (rooted) S7 I suddenly notices that the Google services and play store were GONE. After installing these from GAPPS, I notice that several apps are disappearing.
I don't know why, don't know how, but I do know it concerns both system apps as well as user apps.
eg: I lost Waze (user app) this morning and, after a reboot, es explorer (user app), Google pictures (system app) and the gallery (also system app).
What can I do to prevent this from happening again?
I did make a titanium backup and a TWRP backup, but of cause it's unacceptable to work with my phone: clicking on an icon has about 2% change that the app is gone!
I noticed others that have this problem too, but I have nothing installed to the external SD card (which, btw. is a pain in the @SS with marshmallow)
No one can help me?
Still on every reboot I lose apps, both user and system apps.
Annoyingly is also that titanium backup cannot restore system apps!
I had link 2nd and foldermount, but removed both before. They are not installed, but still this is happening.
Please, please help!
BTW: a factory reset won't get me my system apps back, right?
I'm also having the exact same problem. Tried to search for a solution but to no avail... This is so frustrating...
what apps are missing ?
i have not seen anything like that
Randomly any apps it feels like removing. System apps, user installed apps. Once my google play store got uninstalled.

u say u installed GAPPS , maybe thats the problem
Bright.light did, I didn't.
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
I think this might be because I flashed ExtSD_Fix_rw-signed-v1.9b.zip
This is used to change the permissions for the external card.
It messes with /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml and /data/system/packages.xml
maybe that got wrong, so I made a factory reset and started all over. Now it works, even with xposed and root.
btw: It's only after I lost the play store/google services that I installed GAPPS, so GAPPS is not the problem.
Same here. I tried to revert to the packages.xml before the flash but it didn't work. Apps still getting uninstalled. So a factory reset did the trick for you? Did u flash ExtSD again after the reset?

No, I removed this ExtSD immediately, just to be sure that I won't flash it again.
For the moment I learn to live with this problem. It's possible because most sophisticated apps are already requesting the correct rights. Including the root capabilities it works as I like it to work.
When there is a better solution, I will TWRP backup and try that one, but this ExtSD is not the correct way.
I haven't found the thread, or else I would have put a warning in there too...
I have changed the permissions and ownership of the files in newer versions. Tonight I will release v2.8 with additional logging to help me finish this thing.
The ExtSD Fix thread is here.

Thank rufus! Still appreciate your work on this. Don't take it the wrong way that I'm blaming this app. Users install at their own risk, so it's all in the user. [emoji4]

No bad feelings ?
My stuff does not work as well as I want it to yet and that frustrates me quite a bit...
Please join the testing team to help. If you don't want to mess your system, nandroid backup before flash and then restore. I hope the apps disappear quickly though... I know it is a pain to loose data/settings/texts/call logs...

I didn't loose those things, however, since my backup was 'old', I just started all over, only retrieving some items from backup selectively.
No hard feelings for the ExtSD, I know it's my own risk
I do hope that the development of ExtSD will continue and that there will be a time that we beat this monster problem! :good: Or that Google finally understands that this is NOT wat we want!
btw: I have several apps which I cannot use anymore because of these ridiculous rights.:crying:
I have the same trouble with missing apps on my rooted 5.0 Lollipop phone.
I find that the missing apps usually have two copies of themselves in the data\app directory.
What I describe will apply to all updated system apps and user apps:
For example playstore is a system app but, after it is updated it is stored as data\app\com.android.vending-1 for the first update. Then data\app\com.android.vending-2 for the 2nd update.
Further updates will alternate between these two storage locations.
If something goes wrong and data\app\com.android.vending-1 does not get deleted you will have two copies of Playstore which I think will lead to a randomly disappearing Playstore.
I delete the oldest dated of the two storage locations and reboot phone. If still missing I reinstall the app and make sure there is only one copy in data\app directory, I will delete the oldest again.
I have auto update apps turned off to reduce the problem. I have a TWRP backup so I do not worry about messing up the phone.
Good Luck!

[APPS] Oct 5th 2017, UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM APPS (6.0.1) touchwiz

(just want to start by saying that these work on my tmobile note 3, and I've used roms such as magma, phonesis, etc. Basically 6.0.1 TouchWiz roms)
So I made two zips here. One Is full of apps I pulled from my system/apps, and the other I pulled from priv/apps. Basically as the roms age and rarely get updates (our phone is kinda old in this tech world), our apps don't get updates either. So I've spent some time pulling apps from various bits and pieces, in search for the newest ones that are ported, and will work for our phone. Feel free to share if you know of newer versions of these. I'm always looking. And if you're looking for the best root explorer to install stuff, search mixplorer.

Just want to add, as a precaution, make sure you do a nandroid backup before trying these, and I usually back up any apps I'm replacing, just in case they don't work and I have to throw the old one back in the mix.
Not newest versions of apps...
Checked zip's, very old apps, there are more never versions. Let's example, Samsung Clock 6.5.93.
And many-many more apps...

Really?? Please point me in some kind of direction. I searched like an idiot forever, an these are all i can come up with. I mean, I'm not asking to give me a thousand links, but is there one thread that posts them? Or a newer rom that I'm not seeing? I'll delete my post if thats the case. Or update it. Or set it on fire.

I tried installing the clock app, and got a parsing error. Is that app made For 7.1.1 or 6.0.1, because im only interested In marshmallow apps. Or is there a way to get around the app being for nougat?
you better off downloading mm roms, extracting apk with all extra files (folders, libs, etc) than making a flashable zip with it to set up the right permissions, etc.
or
flash the rom you want to get the apks from and install titanium backup, press the check mark located on top right, scroll down to create "update.zip" check the apps you want. this will create a flashable zip to restore the apps with all the permissions and folders done right. so just go back to the rom you had (must be touchwiz) go to recovery and flash the update.zip
