Note 8 vs Note 4 Reception - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

I was curious if anyone could shed some light on whether or not a Note 8 will improve reception. On the base I'm stationed at AT&T reception is pretty terrible so I'm not sure if a new phone will make any difference, but I figured I would ask. I always seem to have one bar, but phone calls are choppy and sometimes data will even drop completely.
I complained to AT&T and they are offering me the Note 8 for $465 with a two year contract since I let them know I've been contemplating leaving them for a different carrier. I've been with them since I was in grade school so I would like to stay, but people on Verizon have no issue on base so it is tempting to leave. AT&T normally does not do contracts as we all know, but due to the $450 discount they are requiring one.
What do you all think? Is the Note 8 still the best phone out, especially for this price tag? My Note 4 is getting slower and slower even after a wipe/deletion of the cache which is getting irritating. Hopefully one day the Note 8 will get root, but after waiting for it on my Note 4 I'm not holding my breath. I've learned to live without it though...
Thank you for any input.

I'm not sure about the Note 4, but I have about the same reception as my wife's Note 5.

I'd take the Note 8 for the discount.
Also try the below apn setup. When I had my Note 4 it helped a TON.

Are you referring to the top APN settings? I'll give them a shot. Thanks!

Take the discount. It's a hell of a phone!

Anybody on a Note 3 and thinking about upgrading?

Anybody thinking of upgrading to the note 5 from the 3? The only thing that really concerns me is the battery. being a power user and with the 10,000 mah Zerolemon on my Note 3 the battery is great!
What are some of your thoughts about going from the 3 to 5?
Is the 4 still worth looking into?
Reports are the display is more efficient than the 4 which was more efficient than the 3. and the processor is 2 gens smaller than the 3, so i would guess the 5 with a 3000ma battery will last at least 2 to 4 hrs longer than the 3200ma 3. And probably a day longet if you use that super power saver mode the note 4 has.
i worry about the all glass back. looks like a case for this one for sure.
Thinking about upgrading to a Note 4
Seriously, I am. I want the microSD slot, the removable battery, and no glass back. Here's something that someone mentioned over on the generic Note 5 forum, I believe, that made me think. He said that development on the Exynos Note 4s has really been slow. He prophesied that it would carry over to the Note 5, since thy have Exynos CPUs. I've been scouring CL and Ebay, looking for a used Note 4. BTW, it's true what others have reported. It's darn near impossible to get a Note 4 from Sprint. I called 2 stores today. No Note 4s. The guy at the second one told me that he had checked all the MN stores for a business customer. None in MN! My fall back plan is to get one from Best Buy. But, as a former SERO customer, I can only buy it at retail there. They can't upgrade my account at BB. Their retail price is $799. Ouch! What really makes me mad? A Sprint CS guy offered me, over the phone, the Note 5 on a fleece, I mean lease, a $15 monthly credit, if I would only lease it.

There's a few sprint's in my city has both the N4 and Note Edge. I wonder if some stores are just putting them in the back inventory for a while so the N5 train can take off.
I wish I could switch phones in general but cant since i have the Gear S and it will only connect to a Samsung Phone
i'm upgrading from a note 2. since subsidies might be going away i figured why the hell not get one. once my daughter turns 12 i'll be handing the sprint account to her anyways (still on SERO plus). i've give it 14 days and hope we get some action here on the phone... well, at least tethering. i really don't use sprint for much else since verizon is way better where i live. i may wait a few days before activating it when it comes in.

If u use the zerolemon or SD get a 4. I'm keeping my note 4 until the 6, if only the mistakes are corrected. Otherwise I'll look elsewhere next yr
samsung probably will never put an sd card slot in the note line again. you might as well get used to it now and enjoy a new phone instead of waiting forever.
i think samsung pay alone will make up for the few things the 5 has lost.
I've had the Note 2 3 4 and now 5 and each one has outperformed the previous. Just a thought.
Try www.swappa.com for Note 4

kinda sad how little action there is in this sub. Hope we get some love soon.
Lol i still have the 4 at the time being
I'm definitely upgrading but it's gonna be to the Note 4 I just gotta have that external sd card slot and removable battery!

Don't use swappa.com let me tell you I ordered a note 3 last month from a very well rated seller. They basically faked the model and sent me an international model.

What.. Are.....u....... Smokin.......go away!
Samsung pay who gives a ****......
I upgraded from the Note 3 and I don't regret it. There are some things I miss but it's minor things. Not having a removable SD sucks but it's no big deal.
Major thing is that there is battery life improvement...it'll be even better once I can get the bloatware and touchwiz off...
So I decided to take the plunge. Went with the Best Buy offer of a free wireless Charger pad and a $200 credit after smart phone trade in. Traded in an old Sprint Flash(that had no value and it was considered recyle). With the gift card, I purchased an Otterbox defender and a Rev 12000 battery pack.
havent really played with or used the phone yet, but all seems well so far. Rooted it and placed on wireless charger pad and its been charging well. I will report back soon with some results
I'm just not sure I REALLY love this phone... not sure what to do. I miss the ir output, I'm really disliking the tw interface, I hate that I can't continously flip screens, nova does fix this, but then no monthly calendar widget, that I can't live without. I swear the reception just isn't quite as good, and/or it takes extra time to switch between 3g and 4g lte that the 3 didn't have. I'm not sure what bb will do for me if I attempt to return this phone... it's really missing the mark for me right now. I may have to talk to bb about my options.
I used to do a lot of multitasking. Spark sucks. If I had it to do over, I would stay with the Note 3 for now. I'm gonna miss talking while I'm surfing/downloading.
Note5 is a beautiful phone. the fit and finish is unmatched even by apple. if, aesthetics and prestige is high on ur priorities, this is the phone for u.
the lack of an SDcard slot won't be an issue for a while and u might have to do some spring cleaning from time to time.
the battery life is mediocre at best but the fast charging is amazing.
I switched to the Note5 because I noticed the LTE on my Note3 and S4 seemed to be slower everywhere, and congestion bogs were more frequent. I don't know the reason for my perceived slowdowns but at average speeds of 3mb/s made the benefits of simultaneous voice and data made it much less of a reason not to upgrade to the new spark network.

Contract expiring but I don't want a new handset.

Hey guys, I have a little issue here. My current 24 month plan with Vodafone(Australia) is almost up. I'm on an 80 dollar plan with 5 gig of mobile internet. I'm quite happy with my current plan already and I don't see myself changing plans or service. The thing is I am very very happy with my current phone which is the Note 3 the only phone I could possible replace it with is the Note 4. I dislike the note 5 with a passion.
The note 4's slight upgrade on the note 3 is not worth to get locked another 24 months with, Since I will most likely keep the same plan and stick with the same provider I was wondering what's my best move? I feel I should definitely get something for it. I really do not want to change my phone for anything on the market right now. Should I just get any of the flagship phones and sell it and go on a holiday or something? Any advice woud be appreciated.
Also here is why I like the Note 3/4 so much even tho it's older.
-Samsung amoled screens
-Big display I love phablets.
-Removable batter - My phone has never been charged or had downtime ever. I use a charging dock and 2 batteries, and keep the spare battery on my wallet.
-the specs on the notes are top notch. My note 3 can still out benchmark most of the other non-samsung flagships.

Jumping from note 4 to note 5

Hey, so I'm interested in jumping from the note 4 to the note 5, I currently have jump 2. I know I have to trade my note 4 in but would i also be required to put down a down payment for the Note 5? I had to put a down payment of $250 (due to not so great credit) when I got my note 4 back in April and honestly would not want to do that with the note 5. Half of the phone is already paid off BTW.

I say go for it!
Probably have to ask tmobile about that. I think it's based on credit as well as length of time you have been a customer iirc.
I haven't had the 4, but honestly, I went in to buy one at Costco and they were running the $250 promotion on the 5 and a couple other samsung phones as well as the Samsung holiday promotion, I decided on the 5 as it turns out cheaper factoring in the promotions.
Having had the note 3 when it was released I don't find the 5 leaps and bounds better. Giving up removable battery, SD and replaceable back is a lot IMO. Not saying the 5 isn't better, just not all that better and when you compare it to the 4 I would imagine even less so.
I think the question is around down payment and I think you should reach out to T-mobile.. you might have just missed the note 5 lease offer for BF weekend..

"Jump" onto a different phone after the Note 5 ?

Anyone get the itch to "Jump" onto another phone, just to try something else ?
I am on Darthstalker ROM with Jovy's latest kernel from 5.22, and this thing just flies, absolutely butter smooth, warp speed, and I get pretty good battery life, around 5.5h Screen On time.
But I am also a phone whore, having owned like 14 different Android phones the past 5 or 6 years. Typically I only keep a phone 6 to 9 months or so. But this Note 5, I got last August and with a killer ROM + kernel like Jovy's it has made me keep this phone longer than others. I really haven't seen the need to switch this phone, except was thinking of the S7 Edge, but with the bad news of locked bootloader and no root, that's a no go
I sort of get the itch to use Jump on Demand to trade in for the HTC 10, or LG G5 ( now that root available ) just to test out something fresh and different. Anyone else get that itch ?
And I am super duper pumped for the Note 6, it is looking to be a super beast smartphone. 6GB RAM, 4,000mAH battery, 5.8" screen in same footprint size of the Note 5, and will be waterproof. BUT...it also looking to be locked down, like the T-Mobile S7 line, meaning zero development, which if that happens, I don't think I will pick it up with JoD.
What is everything thinking here ? you happy with the Note 5 a year later ? What if the new Note 6 is locked, then what will you do on T-Mobile ?
I will most likely jump to the 6 even if it is locked, so long as it has an SD slot and bigger battery. I ran my 5 without rooting/modding for a couple weeks and it was just fine. There are things like package disabler pro and other non-root workaround apps that accomplish about 90% of what I need root for, so I'm not too terribly worried about it.

Why not get the International Note 6, it will come sim-unlocked and easily root-able.
Plus if you buy it at Amazon.com it will cost about $140 less than the Tmobile model.
Just like the International S7 Edge, it cost $725 + free shipping and NO TAX.
That's a total of $140 savings compared to the Tmobile model brand plus tax price.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

It'd be nice but I simply don't have that much money to drop on a phone all at once, that's the only reason I still buy from carriers.

I feel the same way. Why root, most phones don't really need it.

A71 vs Note 8

Hope everyone is Staying Safe!! I have not posted on this site in a long time.
I have a Note 8, NO PROBLEMS with it and still satisfied with it.
I have read all the specs on the two phones Note 8 and A71. The A71 seems like a very good choice now to upgrade from the Note 8 which I have had for over 3 years.
I looked at the S20 FE and compared the specs on that to the A71 and Note 8.
For the difference in price I think I will go with the A71. I know the S20 has a better refresh rate, but I do not play games and the extra $200 or more for the S20 can not be justified as I am an OLE man.. LOL
What are your opinions on which to get, A71 or S20? Open for all suggestions.
Thanks for your time and help.
Please Stay Safe and Happy Holidays!
I just got through reading the Real Life thread on here. Very good info. Still looking for opinions on worth of moving from Note 8 to A71. Don't really use my phone as a phone. More like a Laptop for News, Notes, etc.
Check slickdeals and you can get the A71 a lot cheaper. Use the Note 8 for trade in and use promo codes from slickdeals for a really good deal.
Thanks for the tip. I have checked many sites for the best price. I have an S7edge ($115) and Note 8 ($185) trade in.
I can buy a refurbished A71a much cheaper without using a trade in. Have used this option on many of previous Note x purchases since the Note 2, with warranty.
I want to keep my Note 8 as it is still a great phone. I always keep a backup phone.
An update on my decision to buy an A71 5g. Ran across a special on Samsung Website and they offered an A71 5g on special.
I traded in an old S7 Edge and bought the A71 for $260. The best deal that I could find as it is brand new, warranty and T-Mobile.
If anyone is interested I can provide the link if that is allowed on this site?
The best deal I could get from T-Mobile was the A71 5g if I took out another phone line for $20/month x 24 months. That would have been $480. The regular price in T-Mobile was $600.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Please Stay Safe.

Received my A71 5G Black. Did NOT come with a plastic back cover and no ear buds. Called Samsung to question why the ear buds were not included. Their response was: No longer supplied with the phone. NP since I have better ones from my previous phones.
No major problems transferring data from phones (Note 8 to A71.) Some apps would not work on A71. Still setting up some non default settings. Write back in a week to let you know my opinion. So far, GOOD!
