Flashing Unlocked Firmware? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I have a Bell S8+ (SM-G955W) from here in Canada. Can I use Odin to flash the unlocked direct from Samsung software? Any benefits or downsides to doing this?

Yes you can. Look in the General section for the Tutorial. Download files from Updato or Sammobile.
Benefit: no bloat ware
Down side: no WiFi calling, no VoLTE

Thanks. So I should still get LTE and stuff? What about updates...will I still get them, maybe even faster? Like for example could I sign up for the Oreo Beta?

You won't get updates. But they are available on Updato and Sammobile. And you don't need to be able to "sign up" for the Oreo beta. I'm on Xfinity Mobile and I installed the Oreo beta following the guidelines in this thread > https://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s8+/how-to/looking-brave-people-to-try-t3699352

Did you just flash the zip over the stock firmware? Did you install that last update before hand?

I was on the October security patch (AQJA). So my first step was to "go back" to August, AQGL (have to be on AQGL to use that linked method). I did this by downloading the file from Updato, then flashing it via Odin.
Then, to install the Oreo beta .zip you have to ADB sideload the file.
Note that this wipes/factory resets your device. And that's a good thing. One should always do a factory reset when there's a major change of versions. Avoids a lot of issues with conflicts.

Any major issues you've found with it?

None. It's been flawless for me so far. But be sure to factory reset, and don't restore any backups. Set it up as a new device.

Samsung S7 not receiving updates

Hi guys, I bought a Vodafone-branded unlocked S7 here in Ireland.
Never used it with Vodafone and I've never received any updates for it.
OTA, Smart switch and Updato they all say my device is up to date but I can see there are more recent firmwares for my CSC.
Here are my details:
PDA: G930FXXU1DQEI
CSC Version: G930FVFG1DQE3
BASEBAND Version: G930FXXU1BPJJ
CSC Code: VDI
Am I missing something or is it possible that under VDI there are more update channels and my phone is not supposed to receive the other updates?
It's working fine and everything, I'm only concerned about security patches to be honest.
Hope you can give me a hint.
Cheers guys.
Boot into download mode and double check it is definitely the G930F
If it is, then just flash the latest firmware with ODIN 3.12.3 or newer

It is definitely G930F. Would I be safe using HOME_CSC in order not to lose any data?
Also would you have any idea on why this is happening?
Thanks!

If the device is showing as "Custom" system status it won't OTA
Otherwise no idea, and yes just use HOME_CSC, it'll update it as if you got an OTA

Thanks for your help. I guess I'll end up flashing the firmware manually. System status is showing as original BTW.
Any chance I might have screwed up accidentally denying an update once and losing the "updateability" of my device forever? Although it's weird Updato is detecting my device as up-to-date too. This story is really weird to me.
Thanks again anyway!

Actually it's usually the other way around, people trying to deny the updates and asking for help to permanently disable them, so it's unlikely you broke it
Possibly just a bug of some sort, or the firmware you think you are on is not the actual firmware?
What security patch does it state in settings > about > software info > scroll to bottom
The updato app is getting extremely bad reviews lately so I wouldn't trust that anyway
A lot of people update manually, this isn't the first case I've seen with your problem either so I wouldn't worry too much, just flash it yourself

Security patch level is May 2017.
The firmware the phone says I'm on in the software update section reconciles with what Phone INFO detects which is the firmware released for VDI the 2017-06-11 on sammobile.

Yea definitely a strange one, should be seeing an update
Could be anything though, some change within the OS that's not reporting something to the update servers correctly
The flash should fix it, if not, backup and factory reset for the next OTA, or just keep flashing manually

Sorry for going back to this. I just want to clarify another doubt I have. My phone is Vodafone-branded but I've always used it with another carrier. Is this affecting my ability to receive either OTA or updates at all using smart switch ?
Thanks!

You can test this by borrowing a Vodafone sim.
Or better just backup and flash an unlocked stock Rom to your device.

Hi, I'm finding it hard to get someone with a Vodafone sim. Anyway, do I risk anything flashing an unbranded firmware? Knox tripping, custom status showing up or other not-so-nice things ?

AT&T Galaxy S8+ OTA software update not working / alternative way. SOLVED

What I want to do: I was trying to OTA update my phone software to the latest, but it seems I am behind on many updates. On the AT&T website, I saw that I need the previous updates installed first, in order to get the latest ones. I have to go in order.
Problem: Every-time I try to do a software update from the settings, it says “Current software is up to date.” It’s been saying that for over a year now. I can’t even get the updates from last year.
So is there a way I can flash one of the stock firmware updates from last year on to my phone with Odin and see if it will fix the ‘over the air’ updates? Or can I just skip to the most recent firmware and flash that one.
By the way, I have never done anything like this to my phone before, so I am a bit nervous, but I want to get this problem fixed so I would love if someone helped me out. I did see some articles online about flashing stock firmware, that’s how I learned about Odin.
If this is doable, can someone please link me to a thorough tutorial on this process? If it isn’t, can you guys recommend another way of getting to the latest 8.0 stock firmware?
My phone:
Galaxy S8 plus (AT&T)
Model#: SM-G955U
Android version: 7.0
Baseband version: G955USQS1AQF7
Android security patch level: June 1, 2017
Kernel version: 4.4.16-11449429
My phone isn't unlocked.

You can Odin flash CRG3 and the next OTA should be CRHI, so once you go thru settings, check for updates it should want to go to CRHI. And then you should be in the Update path to receive OTA's automatically

Thanks, so is it okay to flash it with the latest version of Odin? Also, do you mind linking me with an up to date / reliable tutorial on this? This is my first time attempting to do something like this.
One more thing, on Sammobile, there is only one firmware available for at&t, and it's the oldest one.

Okay, and is it okay if I flash from a firmware from May 2018? It's about 4 months old. Would I be able to OTA update from there on? Also, what is AT&T userdata? Yes you can use this firmware and start to receive updates, User data I'm not 100% sure but I think its supposed to flash your data so you wont have to reinstall everything but I heard it dosent work for At&t it will still do a complete wipe before install.

Oreo update ... still waiting.

I struggle to understand why it's so difficult to get any information about when I can expect my phone to update to Oreo. I understood that it would be updateable out of the box when I bought it back in August, but I'm still waiting. I'm not overly bothered about the new features, but I need an Oreo device to properly test an app I have to update, according to Google Play.
Anyway, I was wondering. It's November the 2nd, Oreo has been about for a while now, I have a 2018 phone running 7.1. I've tried updating through the few legitimate means available but am still being told my device is up-to-date. Trawling the Internet for clues about who has or hasn't got this update, I've failed to find any definitive information. So I don't know if my phone is not updating when it should be, and I'm reluctant to do any hacking. Too many bad experiences there.
So the question is, is anyone else here with a Galaxy A8 (2018) still waiting? I'm on giffgaff, with an unbranded, unlocked (i.e. not network locked) phone.
Thanks,
Paul.

I'm not rooted, and I wanted to avoid using Odin or any unofficial means of updating. In the past I've just had too many headaches with those approaches. I guess I was really just wondering who else out there is waiting for this long overdue update.
took my phone half a month to see a new update

You can try SamFirm downloader, when there is an update available it will show up.
Odin is safe to use, you can flash official filmware through it without a problem.
It is possible to flash other country filmware with the Oreo update with the same bootloader that you've got.
For some countries there won't be any updates to Oreo, and they stay on Nougat 7.1 August patch.

With SamFirm you can see directly if there's an update or not, its that simple and can do no harm.

I don't see the problem, from SamFirm you get an official update just like OTG, the difference is that its updating right from your Phone with an OTG.
Basically you receive the same update.
But, "Suit yourself"

Well, you may try with ODIN, but not sure if that will work due to a mismatch in the device version. You got nothing to lose, ODIN will fail if there is a problem, it won't brick your device. In worse case a factory reset, so backup all your data/apps.

Question Android 13

Z flip 4 is supposed to get OneUI 5.0 with A13 in November, but it just received the November security patch without A13. Do you think that A13 will get delayed for our phone?
I read here that beta 2 was released recently. Usually they will issue beta 3 before it will be final. So yes, I can see the A13 can be delayed till December.
But that's no biggie really. Not that much changed from A12 to A13 anyway.
Beta 4 ZVK3 is under testing at the moment
I am still stuck in beta 1 ZVK9. I manually load this one, after that, keep looking for beta 2, 3 and 4 now. No luck. For those if you are still in A12, maybe be patient. Google Pay won't work in beta software, I don't see other issues.

No massive changes, but does seem snappier. Ram Memory management is improved over A11 in my opinion.
Battery life for me is exactly the same.
Has anyone managed to get the firmware file or the fetch the ota update file, for the US model, for the stable release yet?
I too, curiously any one (service/model) combination in US get official A13 update?
I have F721U1 directly purchased from samsung.com. I am with US mobile service (VZW MVNO). I manually apply A13 beta 1. Phone runs fine and does not hit any issues as I am aware in my usage pattern.
However, Gpay won't work with beta SW. Keep googling without any luck for official download Link. Tired for read all different web site post update screen and news announcement. None of them has download link.
Missed previous Pixel phones, Google post Full and OTA as soon as they announce update news. I can always download and apply myself.

The Z Flip 4 and fold 4 got the update a few hours ago in Korea, so hopefully it should be coming for the US models very soon.
You may have to end up flashing the SM-F721U firmware instead of the SM-F721U1 firmware, as the U firmware typically becomes available before the U1 firmware, if I remember correctly. In order to flash the U firmware over the U1 firmware, you need to use a patched version of Odin, here's the link for that - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/patched-odin-3-13-1.3762572/ and make sure to download the file named "Odin3 v3.14.1_3B. I knew that u1 is the Google Fi version. But what exactly is the software different between the two? You can use non fi sim card on an u1.
Flashed One UI 5 yesterday. From the SM-F721B EUX to SM-F721B SRI, dirty flash.
Worked fine, it feels a little more smooth but I was expecting more changes tbh.
EUX upgrade live today for me.
One day later for me. Also EUX.

The only difference between the two is the carrier (U) firmware has carrier specific features, not apps, that aren't in the unlocked (U1) firmware. For example, people who have AT&T as their carrier, such as myself, can get AT&T's 5G+ an I have no idea what AT&T's 5G+ even is. Also the U1 version isn't the Google Fi version, I'm guessing when you buy a Google Fi Z flip they use the unlocked variant and just put a sim card inside of it.

In case you haven't found it yet, and one UI 5 is out, you can use samloader, which is a terminal/command line tool that allow you to download firmware straight from Samsung's servers. On Linux it is as simple as running pip install git+https://github.com/samloader/samloader.git and on windows I don't know what to do as I don't primarily use it. The only Idea I have is to download python for windows, clone the repository and copy the files to the same directory of python.exe.
The command to download the firmware using samloader - samloader -m SM-F721U -r TMB -v F721USQU1BVK3/F721UOYN1BVK3/F721USQU1BVK3/F721USQU1BVK3 -o <name of file, e.g. flip4-oneui5.zip or SM-F721U-OneUI5.zip>
