Hi all, long time listener first time caller.
So it's been bugging me for a while that my top and bottom speakers don't seem to be uniform.
If I play the same sound out of each speaker separately it sounds different.
My bottom speaker sounds a bit more base heavy and flatter. My top speaker is higher/sharper.
I've been in touch with Google support to see if that is how the phone is supposed to be, or just a defect with my device.
Currently I'm waiting for someone higher up to respond to my query as they don't seem to know how the speakers are supposed to work.
Please can you test your device and see what you think?

This has been confirmed a few times already - the top speaker is physically different than the bottom speaker and so it is basically tuned to play the higher frequencies than the bottom speaker. They are not identical and will not sound identical.

Edit - just found the call quality real life review thread and the link to 9-5 Google confirming this.
Annoying that they can confirm it to them but are still unsure after around 10 days with support about how their own speakers work!

I am lucky owner my new Xperia Z3 :good: , but I am not sure if my speakers work correctly. If I take my mobile to hand in landscape, play music and cover right speaker I can hear that left speaker play much deeper. The right speaker has little flat sound. I am not sure but i think that right speaker is primary on speech such as in movie and left speaker is primary bass and deep. Can someone confirm me that has different sound from left and right speaker ?

I don't know exactly on Z3 but for stereo system, sound from right noticable difference to left.
Yes, this is normal. It is also affected by the music/video you are playing. If it is recorded in stereo, there will obviously be differences in the left and right channels. If it is mono, the differences will be much less (if any at all).
Sorry for bumping this thread, but yeah, I have the same issue (if it is an issue) and I've tried playing mono file on it and there's still huge difference between left and right speakers - the right/bottom one sounds like a cheap phone's speaker while the top/left one sounds like an M8 speaker. I'd love to know what more owners have to say about this, if it's not the same on everyone's phone then I might try to change it.

Speakers are a mixed bag for me. No where near the quality of the M8. Top speaker is much bassier. Some video's like trailers sound absolutely fantastic with lots of bass and clear big sound, but video's with talking seem to make them buzz and crackle.
Also, the speaker volume settings are very inconsistent. Have to push volume up to 7/10 to really hear a lot of video's.

I've gotten my Z3 in copper last week, and will send it back tomorrow to get a replacement. There are two reasons for that:
1. The display glass is either too small or wasn't put in centered. While I have no gap on the left side, there is a rather one on the right side. Aside from the aesthetic annoyance, it's large enough that it could compromise the IP rating, and I don't want to risk that.
2. Other people complained about call quality, which is what this thread is about.
I tried it with five different partners / phones. Four could hear me most of the time, with one I had to shout. All five said I sound muffled, like I'm talking through a pillow, or as if I wouldn't open my mouth when I speak. Two complained about compression artifacts ("Like an MP3 at 64 kBit/s"). One could make out rather well what I said, two required me to repeat what I say every twenty seconds. All five also said that my voice was very quiet.
Changing from LTE to UMTs and GSM changed nothing.
Turning off noise cancellation in the call settings changed nothing. Setting the mic gain from Auto to High made it not a single bit clearer, but distorted the sound.
Using a headset, everything was okay, though one person said that they still hear a bit of compression artifacts.
The funny thing is that when I used the Sony Recording App to check the mics, they sounded rather good (both of them, you can set it to Stereo and have the lower mic on one and the ambient mic on another channel). So I guess this has something to do with how the codec for telephony works while the microphones are physically okay.
Did anyone else have such problems? I'm waiting for the replacement handset and will check again. It's somewhat annoying, the Z3 is such a nice phone otherwise, but I couldn't use it for calling people.

Not sure if this is worth a new thread but anyway, here it is.
I did notice some difference between the sound played by the top and the bottom speaker. One of them seems a bit louder (not as much as we can hear with the XL variant) and likely with more bass.
Is the sound identical to both speaker on your device, meaning mine might be defective ?
There's a small difference, more bass on the lower one and more treble on the top. Not a big difference but noticeable if you listen for it.

I was wondering... is RN7P able to output stereo sound? If you go to CIT (settings->my device->all specs and tap kernel version 5 times) and choose test number 12 ( play music by receiver), you can hear music coming from... well the receiver (earpiece). It is loud enough, although not as loud as a main speaker, to hear it at normal volume levels. So does anyone have any idea/experience about the possibility of enabling stereo sound with a mod or something? My last phone did have stereo sound, and the sound from the earpiece was a little quieter than the main speaker, just like in this case.

I just installed the global rom miui_VIOLETINGlobal_V10.2.8.0.PFHINXM_997265e49a_9 .0.zip on my brand new RN7PRO china 6/128. No problem for the installation but, I found out that only the right speaker is working under all condition. I tried with MP3, Games, youtube, and other audio files.
Now, I don't know if depend on the rom installed or is a device that is expecting to work like this.
Anyone can tell me if both or only one speaker is working??
The phone has only one main speaker (on the bottom side, to the right of the usb port when you are looking at the screen), if that i what you mean.

PS: So, the other "holes" that look like a speaker on the left side of the USB looking the screen...what is it?? very big microphone??
The holes are there for aesthetic reason, to preserve the symmetry of the device.

Yes, the holes on the left side is for the microphone.
Like other said, they design it symmetrically for aesthetic reason.

Hello guys,
I noticed something weird with my new Pixel 3A:
The sound is very low when it's set between 0 and ~75%, and start to become louud only at the end (like 80% and more). But when the audio is set on maximum, the sound is kind of weird... like there is too much "bass", not natural... I don't know how to describe it.
Am I the only one? Is your Pixel 3a audio weak except at maximum?

OMG! Thanks for the link. This could be a deal breaker. Strange, though that one poster said he didn't have the issue on Oreo. One reported issue started after 6 mos but didn't link it to OS upgrade. My white 3a is coming from B&H on "1st come" as the inventory replenishes so it could be weeks before it arrives.
Never had a Pixel ($$$) but had every Nexus device (phones and tablets) since GNex--which I kept because of hdmi out. Generally, issues with the phones, but the our last three (N9, 5X, and 6P) had serious hardware issues. LG fixed one 5X --twice; we replaced battery in 6P which revitalized that device. N9 became hopeless. Am wishing for better with the 3a (like the N5--which I'm still using as a device--not phone). The 3a reminded me of the N5 which I really loved as a daily driver.
Please, posters, chime in if you've found this issue, too. TIA.
I've noticed that my ringer and notifications are what's low, the call volume and media seem loud. Not sure what's going on
In fact, I don't care if it's software, I just wanted to know if I have a defect unit...
I will never buy a smartphone with updates not directly from Google again, so I don't care about some software issue, I will always buy Pixels. But my only problem is to know if it's only my device or not. .
Yes, the volume for all things for me is quite low until you get past ~75% like you said.

It's weird, why Google did that? It's like the 100% sound is like 3x or 4x louder than 50-60%! But my maths say to me (correct me if I'm wrong) 50-60% should be half less than 100%.
Today I finally had a chance to play with 3a that was connected to the network and I experienced low volume at about 50% for YouTube playback. In-call volume for conversation seemed OK but I was not able to check ringtone because phone was not accepting incoming calls.
sorry do you mean the loudspeakers or with headphones? or in-call? sound levels seem fairly normal for me i'm afraid, the audio quality is not great but i've punched it up with ViPER. made a call last night and didn't notice the in-call volume being unusual. my alarm was loud this morning. loudspeaker sound quality also not great but that doesn't really affect me.

One guy (on the above linked google page) realized it was the plastic protective cover that the phone came with. It was covering the speaker hole (one of the stereo speakers is located behind the earpiece hole - they are not BOTH at the bottom of the phone). He removed the plastic cover and the sound volume was fine.
So make sure you have removed the plastic and that any screen protector you might have installed doesn't cover the speaker!
Mine seems pretty good--loud. My hearing is very sensitive, though. Brightness, otoh, is sub-par--or calibrated differently. 70% on my 3a = 30% on N5X.
Yeah that's what I mean... At max the audio is like other phones, but at 70 it's lower... Weird calibration.

That's the way it works. The other hole is only for optical balance. You have the top speaker which is front firing and one bottom speaker which is down firing

I believe the other hole is actually a mic. This is VERY common in phones with a single bottom firing speaker.
I noticed the Pixel 3a isn't 'really' stereo. I feel like it's mono sound but with 2 speakers for boost the audio.
I don't know if you guys noticed that, when you watch a video or listen podcast... if you put your finger and your block the audio from a speaker, and you do the same thing with the other speaker, the audio isn't the same, there is like 'low freq" (bass?) coming from the bottom, and 'high freq' (normal) coming from the top speaker.
I mean... when you test that with your finger and put the phone near to your ear, you will notice the audio from both speakers is not the same at all, it's weird...
EDIT: I was wondering if I'm the crazy guy who se weird things or issues everywhere but after some research I found I'm not the only one who noticed that, we have the confirmation in the Unbox Therapy video about Pixel 3a:
