I'm hoping someone can help me troubleshoot volume issues I'm having on my Nexus 5 running the latest build of LineageOS (24 October at this time). Tell me what to look for in the logs or other troubleshooting steps I can take before taking it in to get the speakers replaced.
I've had this phone since April with no issue. I got it as a refurb off Newegg. Since the beginning of October or so, the speaker volume has been inconsistent. Up until this issue, the sound coming out of the speaker was consistently good: it was loud on high volume and quiet on low volume.
The speaker sound recently started randomly (in that I can't seem to find a pattern), becoming very quiet, even with all the volume sliders turned up to maximum. I'd estimate that the speaker output during these periods at full volume on the phone is about the same as when it's behaving normally and I have the slider down to under 25%. The volume will restore itself, be fine for a while (anywhere from a couple minutes to hours), and then go quiet suddenly, again from anywhere from a couple minutes to hours.
Some notes:
I've ruled out the speaker switching from the bottom speakers to the speaker at the top of the phone where your ear goes when taking a call. The bottom speakers go quiet.
The volume is quiet for the ringer, alarm, media and notifications. Fiddling with these sliders does nothing.
I've wiped the caches from TWRP, rebooting, restarting, powering off and so on. No consistent effects.
Headphones seem unaffected and the volume is normal.
I'm aware that there was a volume issue with Nexus 5s due to a security release back in 2013 or so. I understand that bug was fixed in subsequent releases and, presumably, is in LineageOS. Therefore, I doubt this is related to that.
I've picked through the logs and one thing I'm noticing is that there are ThermalEngine alarms being thrown. is it theoretically possible that, to reduce heat, Android is cutting the volume level?
I'd like to avoid factory resetting the phone, but I can once we eliminate other issues.
I'm reluctant to say that it's a hardware issue because I don't get any distortion from the speakers and, when the speakers go quiet, I don't notice any sound quality degradation. Further, the speakers haven't been getting quieter or louder. However, if all else fails, I'll have to take the phone in to get the speakers replaced.
I'm grateful for any help the community can provide.
With thanks,

I'm currently running stock, un-rooted 3.18 from AT&T.
My speakers, both on the back and the earpiece, have extremely low volume. Even at max volume I have difficulty hearing phone calls anywhere that is not very quiet. Also, my ringtone and notifications are very quiet. Again, they're so quiet I generally don't hear them if I'm not in a moderately quiet setting with the phone face down nearby.
I don't seem to recall this being the case when I first got the phone. I also tried a couple different ROMs recently, but none of them seemed to help so I just went back to stock.
On a potentially related note, whenever I'm playing music and get a notification it gets played very softly in the background, and is often inaudible. If I get a call it pauses the music, though.
Any help with either or both of these issues would be greately appreciated.
Everybody,
So I've had my OPO for a while, but I've noticed a few times that after being booted for a period of time (several days to a week), the speaker output seems to go silent. This means that when I use the volume control, it no longer sounds as I move it higher or lower, phone ringing is mute, etc. If I plug in a headset, I can hear everything fine there. Upon a reboot, it goes back to normal however.
Has anybody else noticed this behavior?
I am on CM 11.0-XNPH38R, although I believe I observed this at least once on the previous build. It "feels" like it is getting stuck in headphone output mode.
Any help or supporting observations if this is a general problem, or something specific to my unit would be helpful. Thanks!
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum.
I have a stock Moto G 2015 2/16 GB version.
I've always had a problem with it: when I try to play an audio clip in Telegram or Whatsapp through the earpiece speaker, by pulling the phone up to my ear, the volume is just too low. It's all right if I'm in a quiet room, but as soon as there's even modest noise around, I can't hear anything. I can use the volume keys to adjust it, but it turns out I'm already at the highest setting and it's definitely not enough.
Conversely, when I use that same speaker during a phone call I can hear fine, even in a noisier room.
I'm running Android 6 at the moment but, as I said, I've had this problem since the beginning, when my phone still ran 5.x.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I actually have the opposite issue.
xt1540 2/16 6.0 stock not-rooted, bootloader unlocked
Music audio, notification tones (bells, beeps, whistles) are fine and loud
Phone calls volume is very low.
I've tried...when call starts down the volume then back up...no go
Move back to 5.1.1, still same issue.
Tried removing LCD to get ear screen out of the way...still issue persists.

I replaced the ear speaker, still low audio during calls. I forgot to describe when call is placed in speakerphone mode, the audio is fine albeit slightly distorted on high volume.
** comment ** I have a Lumia 640 LTE, (SD410) call volume in earspeaker is loud where I have to turn it down a couple clicks. And I've had people tell me that on their end my voice comes through same if not better than a corded landline. (using the same SIM that was used in the G3).
squid kernel screws the speaker while calling, make calls louder
Looks like it's an issue with a lot brand/model phones.
Something about mixer_paths.xml and "RX1 Digital Volume" needs to be changed.
So I'm guessing all the manufacturers are really lazy in tuning their Android smartphones to perform best for it's primary function, being a phone. Well, for that matter, overall sound quality with all the mic's and speakers.

Thank You hp420
I haven't tried it yet, but when I do I'm sure my G3 will be usable. And thanks again for taking the time and testing/providing different volume level versions of mix_paths.xml.

Update: I've tried the modified mixer_paths.xml, only marginal success. Possibly have a damaged speaker.
So basically what happens is as I play a song on any platform may it be spotify or youtube, the volume setting is on max and it plays like normal but then the actual 'volume' of the speaker reduces to barely anything. This also applies to anytime when the speaker is being used during calls as well on Loudspeaker. When I use it through bluetooth it's fine, so I'm guessing it's some software glitch. I also updated some apps a while ago so I figured it was that but no. Even after a factory reset to original settings it didn't work. Same thing.
Play something and it starts loud and clear and then 5 seconds later it slowly reduces the volume and stays low. Also I haven't rooted this phone yet, but if I have to I am willing.
Had the find x2 pro for a while now and has been fine but have noticed an issue with the volume of calls using android auto and how I'm picked up on the microphone of the car.
I was running a test as I'm with O2 and the signal kept dropping at certain points, so I plugged my work iPhone 12 Pro in and noticed that the call and music volume was much louder aswell as not dropping the call at any point in my ride home (Vodafone).
So I found my old phone from a few years ago which was a oneplus 6, let it run all the updates and plugged it into my car (71 plate suzuki swift) and low and behold it was the same volume levels as the iPhone and much easier to be heard on the microphone so its either a setting somewhere on the oppo or it is just crap with AA. On the oppo I have to set the call volume to 30(max) in the car but with the oneplus and iPhone it was 20.
I have tried turning off use high quality audio in the Bluetooth setting for the car and disabled absolute volume in the development options which has helped the volume of music but still way too quiet on the calls.
Any suggestions of any other settings to turn on/off as I'm close to binning the phone off
Might have sorted it.
Turning absolute volume back on has enabled media volume sync which was greyed out and now its much louder
Update, nope its not sorted so I'm gonna get rid of the phone come January
