Nexus 5X Unable to connect to WIFI - General Questions and Answers

Hello, This is my first thread in XDA DEVELOPERS.
My Nexus 5x's wifi is not connecting. 4 months ago, my phone boot looped . And I don't have any warranty. I tried every possible way to bring it back and failed. I factory reset then performed a rescue OTA Which was tough to do because the phone was boot looped. But I didn't give up. I contacted the Chinese Repairman(Mr. Huang Jinhui) via WeChat(the one Cathair2906 mentioned in his 4GB RAM upgrade article). I sent my phone to China. And the phone was fixed + the RAM also upgraded from 2GB to 4GB . He sent me a video in WeChat that my phone has been fixed and he mentioned that there is an account lock. In his video, The WIFI was connected to his network(not even any caution mark in wifi signal). I am very happy with that. But the Chinese man couldn't go to the home screen as the phone was reset(I performed a rescue OTA after the phone was bricked that's why). My email & password was needed. But in China, Google server is disabled so he can't bypass FRP even if I give him my email & password. While everything is available in Shenzhen, China, I told him to buy me a new battery of my phone and charger and cable. He changed the battery and send me a clip. Everything was fine. But when I got my phone in my hand and tried to go next, I couldn't connect it to any WiFi Network . It loads and then "Unable to connect" caution appeared. My phone is in Android 7.1.2 with June Security Patch Level. So after watching some youtube videos on how to bypass FRP lock, I followed some steps and went to settings menu via Talkback option. Checked the phone memory, it shows 3.6GB Ram, that's fine. Then went to wifi option and tried to connect but still failed. Tried WPS push button, didn't work :crying:. Then one of my friends told me that since the battery has been changed, the time and date has been reset & wifi won't be connected if there is a major difference in time. Then I was hopeful and relaxed that if I set the time and date correctly, the wifi will be connected.
I set the current time from settings and tried to connect it to my wifi network......................... Still, I failed . Turned it off and on then tried again.......... still, it doesn't connect. No "Authentication Error" message appears. In WIFI Settings menu it shows just "Saved" instead of "Connected"
It's not like that my phone can't search WIFI. Everything is okay, WIFI can be turned off & on. It can search WIFI Networks. All okay, just one problem, it is not connecting.
I can't bypass the FRP lock if I can't connect my phone to WIFI. I'm facing bad time after bad time. I am so near that I am finally gonna use my beloved Nexus 5X again still I cannot because of the new found problem "Not connecting to wifi".
If anyone can help me, I will be really very very grateful.
Thanks

[Q] GizRoot_v_2:: Two issues Can Fix?

Hello, I applied this ROM yesterday I don't have enough posts to put the question in the original thread where I downloaded the ROM but I am
and am very happy with the results but there are two issues. One is that I no longer get the “weather sound” when the clock/weather widget is doing a full screen animation.
No huge deal but I kind of liked that.
The other thing, which is a big deal to me, is that the wireless will not connect automatically, either to open wifi that is remembered, or at home where I have WPA security. It also does not notify me of open networks, even though I have that option checked. Another thing (and this goes back to the OEM ROM as well) is that there are three “AT&T Wifi Hotspot” listings and I cannot “forget “ them.
I connect to one of these at Starbucks but do not know why there are three of them. I also do not use AT&T I use a pre-paid T-Mobile with no date plan so that is why the auto connect to Wifi is so important.
Can anyone offer any advice? I am a total newb but I think I did the “full wipe” correctly, I ran a file called FULL_WIPE_1.5_EXT4_.zip
However, I noticed that after the wipe/ROM flash I still had my remembered wireless networks on the phone, as well as the name of the phone for Bluetooth, which I had changed. So it did retain some info even though it make me do the whole setup routine again once I had flashed this ROM.
Thanks in advance for any advice. I do like Sense but wanted some of the stuff I can do with root, but it is very important for me to be able to auto connect to remembered wifi networks as I don't have a data plan. I really don't want go go back to the unrooted version that is posted on the HTC page.
OK stupid a** me I found the toggle for weather sound so now the only issue is the connection to WiFi if anyone can help out. I have tried toggling WiFi on and off, forgetting and then re-connecting to my home WiFi, a restart and an off/on start, but once I am disconnected from a known Wifi it will not reconnect on it's own I have to go into menu/wireless/networks and then it will do a scan and connect automatically, but with the stock rom it always connected automatically, to remembered networks once I was in range, even if the phone was in sleep mode.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks. Thread moved.

WiFi does not reconnect (Android Issue #58230)

EDIT BELOW:
Hey y'all, I recently got a Nexus 5 and I've been having issues with WiFi reception. I've read the other threads concerning the inability to connect, but I can easily connect to a wireless router the first time.
It's when I disconnect from one specific router and try to access another one that I run into issues. It simply hangs in Connecting, and then just reverts to Saved. The only way for the phone to connect to a router is for me to reboot it, in which case it does so quickly.
I was wondering if anyone had any insight into tackling this problem, or if it's an inherent software issue. This occurs both at home and at school, where I move from building to building (switch routers), but the login credentials are the same.
Thanks!
EDIT #2: I spoke to a Google rep a second time and they decided that since my factory reset did not fix the issue, they were sending me a replacement unit. I'll update this when I get the new unit and see if it still has the WiFi issue or not.
EDIT:So this issue seems to have garnered some attention in the 4.3 release of Android, and a handful of Nexus 5 owners have already reported the same issue (myself included)
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58230
(Sorry, I can't post outside links because I'm a new user)
So if you have a similar problem, feel free to star and add your own comments.
I happened to have the same problem......not sure if this is a hardware problem or not.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ah, I see. Well, I've narrowed the process to simply toggling the WiFi on and off, rather than having to reboot the phone. It's still occurring though.
If I manually disconnect and then reconnect to a router however, this problem doesn't seem to happen. It's only when I exit a router's range that I have to do a WiFi on and off cycle.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Oh, and I notice that the perceived signal strength drops when I try to reconnect to my router. Again, toggling the WiFi on and off allows the Nexus 5 to immediately connect to the router.
I hope this is a software issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Hm..Toggling wifi on and off doesn't seem to work for me...It hangs in connecting for a few seconds and then goes back to saved... I still have to turn off/on the phone before it can connect to a different wifi hotspot..
I've got the same problem: switching wifi networks, from home to work and viceversa, my N5 doesn't connect. It needs a reboot.
Ciao.
I edited my original post with a link to the AOSP issue tracker concerning this problem. I also contacted Google concerning this and they just said to do a factory reset... To no avail.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
This evening, before entering home, I switch off WiFi, then I toogled airplane mode, I toogled WiFi on, and I got connection perfectly working.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Interestingly, when first resetting the phone, I had to toggle Airplane mode in order to reconnect. However, eventually I can just toggle WiFi and it works fine. I'm not sure where the change occurred, unfortunately.
Hopefully my replacement phone doesn't exhibit this issue. Will update this, as mentioned in the initial post, when I get it. I still think it's a software problem, however, since folks that had 4.2 and updated to 4.3 suddenly experienced this issue.
So I'm starting to have this EXACT problem myself. I have a very strong signal for my home wifi and it's basically dropping to poor when I try to connect. After displaying Connecting/Saved several times, it still fails to work. I have tried rebooting it several times, toggling wifi and airplane mode, to no avail. Funny thing is, my work and home wifi have been working perfectly prior to this.
It wasn't until tonight that I started to have any problems. I moved some files through USB, just some stuff from my nexus 4, rebooted about 15 minutes later, and I couldn't get wifi after the reboot. Weird.
EDIT: I've tried a plain factory reset, didn't work. I ended up flashing the factory image, still didn't work. I'm not sure how WiFi just STOPPED working for me. Contemplating an RMA... I really hope someone comes up with something, seeing as I have a perfect screen and none of the other defects listed before.
This may be a fix!
Hey guys, so I've been keeping up with two AOSP issue trackers
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58230
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61945
And in the second link (Issue #61945), scroll down to post #9 Ryan, and he details what he's tried in terms of doing a factory reset WITHOUT having Google automatically restore data and settings. I've documented my results trying this, and it seems (at this early stage of my testing) rather promising.
Like Ryan said, it seems like it's restoring some WiFi settings that may not play well with 4.4 (and maybe even 4.3 for those exhibiting this issue as detailed in the first link (issue #58230))
So here's what I did so that Google would not restore the WiFi settings. Unfortunately, this does mean you may have to manually reinstall your apps and re-input your data by hand.
What I did:
1. Go to Backup & reset
2. UNCHECK "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore"
3. Perform Factory reset
4. After resetting and prompted to do so, input WiFi router credentials to connect to WiFi
5. Skipped logging into existing Google account
6. Skipped making a new Google account
7. After reaching Android homescreen, I manually added my existing Google account
I have a feeling that steps 5-7 are unnecessary, but I did that just to make sure it wouldn't try to restore any of the data.
It's been working so far, but I haven't been able to test it out much since I'm a school currently and it has blanket WiFi coverage (difficult to go out of range). However, I will add that the signal seems stronger than before, AND it's more difficult to lose WiFi signal now than before. Like, nearly impossible here.
Let me know how it goes for y'all. Hope this works.
Oh, and perhaps try
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brilliapps.wifiandmorefixer
before you do the factory reset. It may or may not work (one person said it did). I haven't tried it though, but if it works, it'll save you the trouble of having to do a factory reset.

I'm having the same problem, my connection is strong, but I can not reconnect to any network ... this is really annoying. I need you to help me with something: is there any way to eliminate all current wifi settings without making a factory reset?
I will wait for a fix until december, if not, I will send my phone to rma...
I ended up going with the bricked kernel and this issue has disappeared (at least for now). Been stable without any signal drops or wifi reconnect issues for solid 2 days. It is a record!

I have also seen this on my device that I just received on the 15th. The wifi seems to drop out and re-connect after a while... But, my other, older android devices do not show this issue. After reviewing the previous post about NOT restoring from google.. and creating a fresh install.. I am beginning to suspect if that was the case. I was hoping that keeping it stock and not messing around with kernels and roms was one of the best features of a nexus device. I really hope google provides an update to fix this.
So just a quick update. I didn't restore from Google on my second device and the WiFi had been fine for close to a week now.

Nexus 5 WiFi Crashing Phone

Hi all. I have a weird issue that after Googling it doesn't seem anyone else has had.
The issue started earlier today, in the morning. I was using my phone on the WiFi and it was working phone, then my phone crashed, restarted itself.
I noticed it wasn't connected to the WiFi, went to the WiFi settings and where it usually says the list of networks it said "Turning on WiFi" and the slider at the top was greyed out so I couldn't turn it off.
I tried airplane mode and that didn't help. But the phone was working fine on my mobile data so restarted.
Now the weirder part starts. I basically have an issue where, if I turn on the WiFi, my phone crashes, or doesn't act like it's turning the WiFi on.
Even going Settings and then pressing on the WiFi option freezes the phone.
The problem started when I was still using 4.4.4 however since the problem developed I've used my mobile data to download the updates and now have 5.1.1 I think.
The problem persists even after updating to the most recent version and doing a factory restore. The phone is currently completely stock with nothing downloaded on to it. All I did is go through the first time setup for the device.
The WiFi currently is off, and the phone is working however it won't connect to my data, it has the signal bars and then an ! instead of a 4G icon.
If I try to turn the WiFi on it crashes the phone.
The phone is still under warranty so I plan on contacting LG on Monday however it's currently 3:34 AM on a Sunday so I have a day until I can call them and was hoping for a solution in that time.
Thanks in advance. I have the phone to hand so anything you want me to test I'm able to.
There is some information I didn't type as I don't know what is important was trying to avoid a wall of text so if you have any more questions I'll answer I best I can.
Thanks for reading, I hope you can help!

Issues with Verizon V50

Folks,
I have been having some very annoying issues with my LG V50 and was wondering if anyone else has.
I have been having issues getting Hot Spot to work. It has only worked for a very brief time since I got the phone. It is working now though. I get an error about Tethering Functionality not working right now and to try again later.
I called Verizon and 1st level was unable to diagnose it and they opened a ticket. This was 4 days ago and Verizon has not contacted me.
I also had another issue which I've now discovered is related to my Hot Spot issue. So, I use an app called TuneIn Radio Pro. That app keeps thinking that I don't have network connectivity. (On cellular....on wifi it works). I've since discovered that when my Hot Spot works, that app works. When hot spot doesn't work that app also doesn't. I run speedtests and it connects. I seemingly have internet connectivity but interestingly I also cannot access tunein's web page from Chrome. But I can get to other sites. Seemed like a DNS issue but since it is working now, (and I have time) I can't test it.
Again, right now, Hot Spot is working. It has only worked for the last 4 hours and part of one other day since I got the phone 6 days ago.
Another issue (which I am hoping is a setting)....Voice input does not work when connected to bluetooth. So "OK Google" or voice input (Google) via the keyboard does not work.
Any thoughts?
I just tried setting up a hotspot and it seems there are quite a few more options than I had on my V30. I did get it to work once I chose to "unhide my phone" under the setup options. There's also a timeout due to inactivity, share wifi instead of mobile data, and the ability to block connections. I guess it's possible one of these could be giving you an problem. I would think if you have the share wifi selected but you're not connected to wifi that might create a problem...just guessing
I don't use Tune-in so can't really help with that specifically but I've had no issues streaming with other apps.
As for voice commands, I can't bring myself to talk to my devices and I have as much of it turned off as possible.

So this issue has still been going on. My hotspot will work for a day or two and then it goes back to this error condition. But now I have been going on 4+ straight days where it hasn't been working. So, I have stumbled across a situation where I can get hotspot to work.
I have OpenVPN app on my phone. If I open a VPN session (I have 2 connections to my home routers), I can then get the hotspot to start. Interestingly, hotspot traffic is not going over the VPN. I can even turn off the VPN and the hotspot stays on. But I cannot restart it unless I turn on the VPN.
This issue isn't being caused by any software on my phone. As when I first got the phone and this issue came up, I performed a factory reset and when the phone started up for the 1st time, I immediately tried the hotspot and I got the error.
I also called Verizon today to find out what was going on with my ticket from 2 weeks ago. It was escalated and then closed by the network team with no explanation. Sigh....So they re-opened it. The tech on the phone also called LG while working with me and LG told her that they've seen this issue, but no additional info.
Has anyone with a Verizon V50 been able to consistently use the Hotspot without issues? I am having so many problems with this phone that I am ready to throw it out the window. In addition to the issues I stated earlier, I also found this morning that I was not able to get to eBay (In addition to TuneIn.com). I had to switch to wi-fi and then eBay loaded just fine. Since then, eBay seems to work. IMO, this is a network problem
Over the last 2 weeks, my Hotspot worked from Friday to mid day Sunday. (maybe coincidence) And therefore tunein.com worked. Other than that, I get the error.
Verizon had been completely worthless. They closed my first trouble ticket. My second ticket has been open for 3 weeks without progress. I called today and they put me on with Level 2. I had to run to a meeting after a while, the Level 2 person said no problem tell me when to call you back. I told him 2 hours and he said no problem.....and no call.
I am just curious if others are using Hotspot successfully.
Thanks,
Update to my previous post....I haven't been able to launch the hotspot functionality since yesterday morning. I get the message of "An error occured when activating this functionality. Please try again later."
I may try a factory reset to see if that changes anything...
Decided to factory reset. That didn't change anything. Without installing anything after it was done I tried to create a hotspot and got the same error message.

THANKS!!! Exactly the message I've been getting.
Verizon has not been helpful until now. They've pretty much ignored me and closed my tickets.
Hopefully I get further along. I got a better tech support person this time. He escalated it to the network engineering team. This is a network problem as if I start a VPN session (using OpenVPN Connect), I am able to launch the hotspot.
The hotspot is a symptom, not the cause. I am just curious if you have the same exact problem as me, when you are not able to launch the hotspot, bring up a browser and try to go to tunein.com (through Verizon's network, not over wi-fi). Mine won't work. When the hotspot is working, I am able to get to tunein.com
Yep, exactly the same issue. The tunein link and the Connect Garmin app give me the same error. After I sign in to Garmin on wifi it will work as normal but definitely indicates some type of network issue.

While I am now able to launch the Hotspot, that feature is not very reliable. It stays up and "running" but my laptop will stop working after some period. Usually I get about 5-20 minutes of usage. If I disconnect my laptop and re-connect, it starts to work. (But a pain as I VPN in to work and I have to start that all over)
This phone has been a an exercise in frustration.

Galaxy Express 3 (J120A) Not Connecting to WiFi - Cycles Between "Connecting" and SSID Not Appearing

I bought a Galaxy Express 3 (sm-j120a) on Ebay (new condition) to use as a backup phone. I began the setup process and tried connecting to my WiFi. I put in the correct password but it will constantly cycle between showing "Connecting" underneath the SSID, then suddenly the SSID disappears, then suddenly it will reappear and show "Connecting" underneath, etc. It will do this indefinitely and will never connect. If anyone has experienced this issue before and knows how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate some help.
One thing I haven't checked is whether I could update the software of the phone to the last available update. I wanted to hold off on putting in my sim card because I have a nano sim and I think the phone takes a micro sim and I don't have an adapter yet. Is there a way I can download any available updates to my computer, then send the update to the phone via a USB cable?
Thanks!
i ran into the same thing a while back with an old android phone, a samsung j120a. one day its wifi stopped working with the att modem i have, a bgw210. behavior was the same as what you described. every other wifi device in the house worked fine. tried every standard trouble shooting thing you find when you search this, including factory data reset, nothing. got hold of another phone same model... it also failed to connect to wifi on this modem, same thing.
the answer-> i resorted to playing with the wifi settings on modem, and found that the problem was with the wpa version setting- it was set to wpa 2 by default when i found it. i changed it to the setting that accepted both versions 1 and 2, and the phone's wifi now works again.
i assume at some point att updated this modem, and one of the updates was to change default setting on the wpa version, probably because wpa 2 is supposed to be more secure than wpa 1
just replying because i hate searching stuff like this and finding nothing but people asking roughly the same question without getting any answers. hope this helps somebody searching this in future
