Hello.
I recently came into possession of an LG G5 Android phone, T-Mobile variant H830. I was planning to use it for software development, and I was wondering if there's a way to get it to connect to the internet using my ADSL connection. I'm fairly new to the wonderful world of Android, so please bear with me.
I realize Wi-Fi is the path of least resistance... but it's not the best option in this particular house and I have a fine Ethernet network just sitting there waiting to be used. Also, my old Windows Phone (ducks) is able to use it just fine.
I have a USB type C hub (a Microsoft HD-500 display dock) and a small collection of USB to Ethernet adapters (Realtek RTL8153, ASIX AX8872B). Unfortunately, the LG G5 has no interest in recognizing any of them.
I've also played around with reverse tethering to my PC, but apparently it requires root access to even work, and even after that it doesn't even work very well.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work? Should I be looking into flashing LineageOS? Or maybe I just have the wrong phone?

Today's progress: I played with an app called ReverseTethering, which works by establishing a VPN connection to its host PC over an ADB-controlled USB pipe. Most apps seem fine with it. However, the Google Play Store insists on using Wi-Fi to download apps and won't recognize a reverse-tethered connection. It does resume in-process downloads over the connection, but won't initiate new ones. My conclusion is that this is an app bug, and that it is checking for Wi-Fi when it really should simply be checking for a valid connection.
There's an app called Fake Wifi that will apparently hack apps into thinking their connection is over Wi-Fi when it's not. However, this app needs a framework that requires a rooted device. So, back to square one.
(NB: I'd prefer not to root my device for security reasons.)
Today's progress: connecting a Sharkk UH-SKRJ11 (RealTek RTL8153 chipset) directly to the phone using a USB C-to-A adapter works. A couple of apps seem iffy about it, including the Google Maps offline downloader, but the Google Play Store and the LG updater work. So this is probably as good as it gets without major surgery.
This suggests that the problem was in fact the Microsoft HD-500 display dock. It would charge the phone, but the phone didn't seem to recognize it as a USB hub.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a USB Type C hub that works with this phone? Ideally I'd like to use Ethernet and charge at the same time.

I work on the desktop team at a company and we started using Dell's DW-15 USB-C docks since Dell is phasing out the E-port. Out of curiosity, I plugged my phone into one a couple of months ago and everything but the display output works. We also have Dell 96NPS USB-C to Ethernet adapters that work fine with the G5.
I have this here.
Bought from eBay. Works on both G5 and V20. Should work on any phone that supports SlimPort.
I have connected it to the phone with display and various peripherals. Did not try ethernet dongle though.
I'm a bit puzzled that the Microsoft dock did not function right. I though that too was simply a display/slim-port design. Or maybe it's only the hub/otg functionality that's unavailable?

The Microsoft dock situation is quite odd. Before fully patching the OS (the phone arrived with the March security patch, I think) it wouldn't see anything at all on the dock (which has a Surface Ethernet Adapter aka RTL8153 plugged in). After patching, it suddenly started working, and working fine. Then after patching up to latest, it sort of half-works. It connects and data flows, but the phone pops a "Connecting" message for a minute every so often, as if it were pulling a new DHCP address or something. When connected directly to the Ethernet adapter, things work fine.
(And when I say fine, I mean mostly fine. Every now and then I plug in the adapter and nothing works. Disconnecting and reconnecting sometimes works. Changing USB connection settings sometimes works. Sometimes rebooting works. <shrug>)

I'm sorry but there is not a single marking on that thing. A truly generic device.
That exact one seems to have become rare now. This looks like the successor, though it has one less usb port than mine.

There are many generic types, with or without hdmi, one or more usb etc
One option with aluminum housing, 1 usb 1 hdmi and usb-c power input should cost no more than about $10
I think I got mine for around that (which is a more expensive model), but I got lucky and found a lonely expiring auction. Saved maybe $20
Weird about that dock of yours. Hopefully you'll have better experience with another one.
If I had an ethernet dongle I'd try to confirm if it works with or without the dock on my H850, but that could also depend on the type of chipset and driver used (and LG's flavor of the month it seems).

I'm attempting to use an Android phone as a WiFi adapter for an Xbox 360. I know it's impossible to do via the USB sockets, so I'm not even going to breach that. However, I think I may have found a new approach that may be more successful.
While digging through some junk at work, I found two adapters that got me thinking. The first was a mini-USB to USB, and the second was an ethernet to USB. The two fit together perfectly.
So now I'm attempting to get internet sharing to work on the phone to the 360 via a jerry rigged chain of adapters. it can be summed up as
XBox -> Ethernet cable -> ethernet to USB -> USB to mini-USB -> Droid Eris(running OMGB, an AOSP 2.3.3 rom)
Can anyone think of a way to get it to pass the internet connection down the line from Eris to Xbox? At the moment, the native USB tethering isn't working. I can't seem to find useful apps when searching the market.
Why not get a wifi adapter for the xbox and then tether using your phone as a wireless hotspot.

two main reasons...
1) don't feel like spending $90 on my roommate's 360(the two adapters would have cost me $4 total if I were to buy them in a store, but I got them for free through work)
2) it's way more fun to see if something hand made works than it is to go out and buy a freakishly overpriced adapter to do the same thing.
I think you can find the wireless G adapters fairly cheap on eBay as the new ones are N, but G should do you fine as long as your phone(hotspot) is in the same room.
I just took delivery of the new ASUS Connect Dock, purchased from Amazon.de for €75.15.
I also own the keyboard dock but find the latching system a bit awkward for everyday use as a desktop top docking/charging system. I'd been looking for something like this for a while. It had already been discussed in another thread and on a chance I placed the order. At the time it said that delivery would be in 4-6 weeks. I was quite surprised when I got a message to say that the item I had always thought of as "vapour-ware", was set for delivery on the 17th of October. Well, it's the 16th today and I'm happy to say it's here.
As you can see from the pictures below it's quite small but fits the tablet perfectly without any real drag on the plug being felt either when docking or undocking.
When I first docked I had the LAN cable and power cables plugged in and the TF700 immediately recognised the dock, connectd to the LAN via DHCP and proceeded to charge. I found that the notification bar now had a few new icons, one of which was for the LAN. Tapping this icon brought up a settings page which gave me the option to use a DHCP or Static IP connection. Once I had configured a static IP I had a button which said CONNECT appear, which when touched connected with the new parameters. All was well. :good:
I next tried to connect one of the two USB ports to my PC to see if it would be recognised but obviously they are OTG and cannot be used for a data connection for transfer of files from the PC - no fastboot or ADB. Connecting a USB memory key needed the use of the mount option under Settings-Storage before it would connect. The same was true for when I tried my 1Tb HardDisk. Once mounted both worked as expected. I imagine that connecting a mouse and keyboard would be a no brainer. I can't verify this or that a wireless setup would work.
It is rather expensive for what it is and has a few shortcomings - no HDMI port, no USB data pass-through - but it does do its intended job well. There is a supposed amplified audio-out port but I have not tried this yet. I have no idea whether it is connected internally via USB or directly to the headphone socket. Maybe someone in the future may open one up and check out the internals so we can know more.
Typically I like accessories and this adds to the kit nicely.

EDIT: I tried the USB HardDisk again and this time it was recognised immediately and opened Filemanager. I was able to watch a movie directly from the drive which I guess means that the USB ports are also powered. I'm even happier now!

Indeed, that is what I am really waiting for - that would earn the name "Connect dock" for sure
i can't see your pictures - and very much would like to! i'm seeing a section for thumbnails on your post, but no actual thumbnails in it
UPDATE: reloaded the page a bunch of times and the pics showed up - thanks for sharing! it's WAY smaller than i thought it would be. smells like a perfect thing to use on your bed table to turn your 700 into a clock replacement overnight (gotta keep these geek tech assets working 24x7!!!!!). seems pricey for what you get, but i think i'll grab one when they hit the states.

I haven't tried it but I'd say it would since the power input is the standard 40pin plug and that's what's on the car charger as well.
I know for certain that the tablet charges on 12V because I modified a cable from a car charger - the circuit inside contained a 12V regulator - onto a Kensington netbook charger. The only critical bit is the need to be able to provide at least 1.5A, preferably 2.0A.
I don't have the means to test it so you'll just have to believe me or wait until someone else can.

If only I could find a US vendor then I could try these ideas out myself.

I have a USB Ethernet. Assuming dock Ethernet works the same......
The tablet connects to the LAN on which the Ethernet exists
Using a file explorer (I use ES File Explorer) I can log onto the LAN via the Ethernet (also works via WiFi).
So long as the required shares are set up back at the PC, there is no problem accessing, copying, deleting etc.
I have even played movies which exist on my media server on The LAN, via WiFi, and watched them on the tablet. Not totally smooth but easily watchable as I fall asleep in bed!

You can use Google Cloud Print to print wirelessly from the Tablet. If your printer supports Cloud Print directly (not that many do) you can set this up very easily, and no PC connection is required - only an internet connection for the printer. If your printer doesn't support it directly, you can still set it up and print to it, but it requires your PC to be on and connected (cable or WiFi) to the printer.
This is actually a pretty slick option - works from my Samsung Galaxy Nexus and probably most other Android phones.
If anyone has any info on a US release date, I would appreciate it. Calling ASUS did not help because they weren't even aware of this dock. They kept insisting I was referring to the keyboard dock.
Maybe Asus will bring the Connect Dock to the US for the holidays. I would really prefer one of these next to my bed than the tab in its keyboard dock!

Does the TF700 have the ability to route HDMI through the dock connector? I mean is the wiring in place, I ask because it would seem that they would have forgone a dedicated port if so and used a modified MHL connection?

Having looked at the threads which discuss the pinout configuration for the 40pin connector I can say that it doesn't like there are any connections to HDMI available. There is no passthrough for HDMI on this dock and since it doesn't look like the connector has the pins that it would be pretty sure that it's not possible.
I want to take advantage of the S5 MHL capability. Perhaps eventually using the phone as my everyday computer.
So I would need to have usb keyboard and mouse while connected to a monitor.
I have ordered the device pictured below, it reportedly supports the S5 in some kind of half-assed way, meaning that you may have to fiddle with inserting cables in a certain order to get it to work.
This is what I read anyway.
I want to know if any of you have used the Galaxy S5 in such a way. Will my device work? Know of a better solution?
I had some dreams of making my own Diy S5 dock, but I would have to know what kind of electronic/hardware configuration works (if any), as the S5 is different in that it does not support dock mode (Why samsung... why?).
Well I can report that it works. HDMI out works with sound, and it charges while doing so, but the USB port and the card reader does not work apparently.
Obviously the form of the device is a poor match for the Galaxy S5. I had to remove the plastic housing to make it fit, because of the watertight hatch in front of the USB port. Later I will use a USB extender cable.
Hopefully there is a possibility to make OTG (or host mode, or whatever it's called) work.

There is two question marks here.
1) Does S5 support simultaneously operation with OTG active and HDMI output active.

I don't know. I've read people claiming that you can use both hdmi & otg at the same time including post's on xda. But i've also read people saying you can't. I certainly havn't seen any video demonstrations.
By the way i currently have my S5 displayed on my monitor using mhl->hdmi adapter and have my pc mouse and keyboard working on the S5 wirelessly with Samsung SideSync. I opened the xda app with the pc mouse and have typed this reply with the pc keyboard. I've done some navigation on the phone, opened and used a range of apps. All is well till i opened firefox and the mouse disappeared from the monitor. It's still displayed and functional on the S5 screen though. Closed firefox and the mouse is displayed on the monitor again.

Therefore your new question this is : Does Firefox (Android) this supports four input devices connected at the same time?
Android Keyboard = 1
External keyboard = 2
Android touch pad = 3
external mouse = 4
And all that active by also active HDMI
I would be surprised if Android OS has such potentials.
I was using Andromium OS app which gives you option to turn off android keyboard and dim S5 screen. Both those functions worked. Andromium OS has 3 menus from start menu. Andromium Apps(browser, file manager), Supported Apps (gmail, youtube), Unsupported apps (all other apps installed on device). PC mouse and keyboard worked fine with Andromium Apps & Supported App. PC mouse and keyboard also worked fine with most unsupported apps i tested except firefox browser and adblock browser. If i get my hands on a bluetooth mouse/keyboard i'll test again to see if it works with firefox browser and adblock browser from monitor.
Personally I am going to use my HP iPAQ FA287 Bluetooth keyboard at S5 ( or at least I will try).
Also ordered one OTG cable (CY U2-166) that hopefully this will offer power to the phone and External HDD, due micro USB (female input for charger cable) and this will become also my mouse input too.
Therefore I am interested for your inquiry / investigation, possibly as much you do, because I do also favor Firefox.
I favour android firefox browser and adblock browser because they are consistent in providing desktop view. I'll provide an update here when i get my hands on a bluetooth mouse & keyboard.

But even so, in the past days I did some research about finding more details by discovering the factory that makes those cables.
According to real Specifications: (after me correcting errors due bad translation)
High quality Original USB 2.0 Micro-B HOST OTG CABLE
Interface:
Micro USB male: = Output To be connected with OTG complying device ( Your phone or tablet).
Micro USB female: = DC input To charge = Supply of Power due micro USB female connector ( This is only to supply DC voltage to USB A plug this powering hard drives etc etc).
USB female: To connect with USB A device.
Therefore or in conclusion, this cable is not in position to supply power for the phone and the external hard drive.
Later on, that I did the electrical math, I can now explain and the why ? (this cable cannot do both).
By assuming that mobile phone or tablet this requiring 450mA at charging (due PC USB plug), and removable hard-drives (some of them requiring another stable supply of 500mA) the sum this is almost 1A of power.

Samsung hasn't made it easy for us S5 users. Might have to resort to wireless charging at this rate.

Why not use a bluetooth mouse/keyboard (or even one of those combined ones) with the phone mirroring it's screen to a ChromeCast plugged into your monitor? There's minimal (and I mean you're looking at 10ms) lag - or that's my experience, but I have a really really really fast router etc - and if you're planning on using it essentially as a PC, this setup will work wonders. Plus you can plug the phone in. I've considered using my old S3 in this way.

Charging the S5 through 2A cable would be faster than wireless charging. MHL to HDMI adapter charges the phone as well as mirror your phones screen. I've never used bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Would the S5 support pairing and using both mouse and keyboard at the same time?
By the way there are products for the S3,S4 that support mhl, otg & charging at the same time like the UNITEK Y-2165.

Speaking of compatibility, S5 this is a brother model to Note III.
I do such an assumption due the identical charging system specifications.
From the other hand with all those variants of G900, there is no chance to offer an 100% reliable prediction if you do not test any such OTG product with your own phone.

The S5 (or certainly my model, G900T) DOES support everything I mentioned however my bluetooth mouse/keyboard is a 2 in 1 setup with the mouse being a trackpad below the keyboard, similar to a laptop. It mirrors directly to my monitor and I've forced Landscape orientation throughout the OS so it works wonderfully. I've not tried yet with the S3, but I'd assume it'd work the same way. Just need to force the screen to stay always on, pop the screen brightness right down and hide it away in a cupboard and boom, full android computer.
On the original question, a cable must exist but unfortuantely I don't know where.

Definable this is a bad idea the screen to stay always on.
Does phone screen brightness this have any effect at HDMI output (brightness) ?
Nope, but turning it off does. I don't mind it burning out as it's an old device I don't use.

I bet 20 Euros that every one reading this topic he/her, will wonder of why you/he, does not simply turn the brightness down.
Either way, Android it is crippled operating system with out offering much of productivity as it does one regular Windows PC.
Neither a smartphone this is capable for long term gaming, the poor thing does not even have active cooling, and CPU will start slowdown so to protect it self from overheat.

The link i gave has a few reviews that can give you an idea of what phones are compatible and which ones arn't. Youtube has video demos of the UNITEK Y-2165, unfortunately none for the S5. It appears the desktop dock feature is on the Note III where as samsung removed the dock feature from the S5.

I tell you what, i really like the concept of carring you desktop in your pocket. Can you imagine that, doing your desktop stuff, unplug the phone and head out with everything you did at home on the desktop in your pocket. I know microsoft have a desktop adapter for their Lumia 950 XL phones which changes the layout to desktop mode on the monitor/tv to give you that PC-like experience.

Looking for some help. I have an HTC U11 on Oreo. Recently installed a Kenwood 7704S Android Auto HU.
Installed Android Auto app via google play, as well as latest version direct from Google. Phone is just not detected using the original USB C cable BUT the phone is charging, all other functions work via the Android Auto app without being cable connected. Short of installing older AA apk versions I am at a loss. I have tested unit with a iphone and Apple Car Play launches fine so it is not a a HU issue as I assumed. I had used this unit with a P10 Plus and it worked but I had intermittent issue with it as well but with the U11 it has just quit launching all together. I have reset phone to factory and tried fresh, no success. I have enabled Developer mode and enable USB debugging and selected MTP Protocol still no luck. I thought perhaps Nova Launcher may have been the culprit but not the issue once reverting to Sense as launcher. I have enabled AA permissions so thats set up correct.
Anyone experience U11 Android auto issues, super frustrating and don't want to run a custom rom just yet or possibly sell phone and find a working Android phone, last OP3 worked with previous Sony XAV-AX100 but I sold that unit wanting an extra USB port. Suggestions welcome cause I am at wits end beside trying other AA versions from earlier dates or rolling back to Nougat, that I have not yet tried. Phone has worked on Oreo and I got it with Oreo but I was experience intermitent connectivity. I can't see it being the USB C port but I did test the unit at the audio store where I bought my 7704S on their demo 9904S and same issue the phone charged but would not launch AA on the HU so it seems to be a hardware/software issue with the U11 itself
I don't have a Kenwood head unit but I have a pioneer NEX-4100 with Android Auto & Apple Carplay.
I just went out to the garage hooked up my wife's (I don't have one) HTC U11 (64GB USA Version) and successfully configured & established an Android Auto connection to the head unit. Ran through the menus and it functioned properly.
I used the USB C cable that came with my LeeCo S3 phone and it worked with the HTC U11. I did not try to use the HTC U11 cable as I don't know where the ball and chain keeps it. But I know cable(s) and Android Auto make a difference.
The U11 was on the latest Oreo 8.0 stock rom and is not rooted.

This is only done once or until you need to use the Carplay side. Thanks for your reply and taking the time to test your wifes HTC u11 on your Pio system. I am stumped still with no luck, with the Kenwood there is no selecting either the AA or Car Play in menu system will just launch automatically upon connection of device. The oddest thing is when I tested my sons 7 Plus it worked flawlessly but following I tried with my HTC U11 using the factory cable and no success. I plan to buy a better USB C cable and give it one last try because I am stumped and frustrated. Mine is USA version as well 64GB. Everything works as it should aside from the system being able to detect the phone and yet the deck rapid charges the device through either USB connection.
I tried another USB C cable and this one gives "an access error of the USB device has occurred" What makes this story even odder is my phone is not detected by my pc either so I am really starting to question if there is an issue with the USB C port, it charges fine but from my understanding data flows via different contacts within the port. This is the only sensible reason at this point. At this point as much as I like the U11 I am considering an alternative Android phone. When i looked up this access error there are lots of people with the issue and Kenwood decks as well as others... Seems it can be a hit or miss with this newest connection

I have been fighting cables and Android Auto for a long time now and finally found my problem which is so dumb to be almost unbelievable. Had a friend suggest this and it was the problem. I keep my phone in my pocket. It picks up lint in the USB C connector. And slowly over time. I took a toothpick and cleaned out the connector. It gets packed in, so takes a while to completely clean it out. I was shocked how much came out. After doing this, all my USB errors disappeared and problems with various cables disappeared as well. Duh, the common denominator was always the phone, not the cable. But it was curious that some cables seemed to work better than others. I feel so dumb, I actually returned this model phone in the first year under warranty because it finally stopped charging by cable. Got another phone and a wireless charger, but my second phone started acting up again and finally just refused to work a few months ago with Android Auto. Now everything is working great again.

I have a pioneer 4200 nex, and can't connect to android auto. Worked perfect with previous m9, but since I bought U11, nada.
I'd be curious to see if anyone can help figure this one out. I drive a lot for work so it was nice seeing Maps on the screen.
Check the Kenwood website and see if there's a mention of unit having problems with type C connectivity.

While researching about me pioneer HU, this is what I found out. I suppose you can use the recommended cables as listed in the pioneer website as it sounds more of a cable problem than anything else.
I will post more once my new type A cable comes in. Sux I gotta go back in the dash to plug it in though. I still have my OEM type C so that should work.

If nothing else, a working plain Ethernet adapter, and I will use Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Google sells one for their 4k chromecast, but they fail to specify if it will work for Ethernet tethering on the Pixel 7 Pro.

I haven't been able to get anything to work with stability on either of my two docks so I don't have a large enough selection to make a definitive statement on the support, but the farthest I've gotten is using my dock that has an RTL8153A-4. It will work for a bit, but when pushing enough data it'll end up resetting. Hits up to 400Mbps but then it drops out. That's par for the course with early RTL8153 chips. It's also a terrible dock and the seller has been banned from Amazon for one reason or another, so can add that on too.
On the other hand I have a more modern Yottamaster NVMe dock that I use with my Steam Deck and it works great. Surprisingly, it is almost fully functional on my phone except for display (obviously know why) and Ethernet. It's using the RTL8153B-2, but I can't get any data to pass over it. The r8152 kernel driver reports that it can't load the firmware, because the phone doesn't have any firmware from linux-firmware outside of what is needed for the hardware internally. Both the kernel driver and Ethernet system report when a cable is connected and the carrier is on, but nothing makes it over the cable.
The first dock you linked also has an RTL8153, so at this point I'm guessing newer revision RTL8153 support is just broken on the phones without the ability to load firmware for them. The second dock you linked inspires some confidence that it will have an AX88178 controller in it, but I've looked at docks recently on Amazon and ones that list AX88178/AX88179 are apparently silently subbing them out for the RTL8153 according to reviews. You're going to have to plug it in to your computer to check what the Ethernet controller shows up as.
Best course of action I can see is to either try to find a dock with an AX88178 in it if your second dock actually has an RTL8153 in it, or get an older USB 2.0 RTL8152 adapter since those are more reliable although that restricts you to 10/100.
It's a bit of an older model but I have been using an Aukey CB-C71 with a Pixel 7 Pro and previously Pixel 6 Pro with ethernet, USB-PD, USB keyboard, and USB wireless mouse. I have used USB PD with everything from the original Nexus 6p chargers to various Windows and Mac laptop chargers without issues.

I'm curious, do you know what chipset the CB-C71 uses? I have another adapter on the way from Amazon, if that doesn't work out I may try the CB-C71 or a device with a similar chipset.

RTL8153B-2, interesting that it doesn't have any issues.

It works without its power plugged in and the phone upside down on the powered pixel stand. I would still like to buy a real hub with gigabit ethernet for the P7P, if someone finds one.

That meets most of my specs. The problem is only 4k 30hz HDMI. If I want to use it with a 4k 60hz device that can use the HDMI output, (obviously not the crippled Pixel line) I would be downgrading.
