Rate this thread to express what you think of the Google Pixel 2 XL's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.

I decided to use the phone with Adaptive Brightness on and the brightness level set to 29%. How I got to that was in total darkness I want it to be the lowest possible setting yet I want it to be bright enough during the day and not have to touch anything. So I moved the slider from 1% up until I noticed the screen get brighter at 30%. I also noticed that it's actually lower with these settings then with Adaptive Brightness off and the slider all the way to the left.

Thats basically were ive landed to i also use the automatic night mode set up from dusk to dawn cuz the blue light bothers me at night

I set up night mode too but specific times. I realized dusk is a little too soon for me.

the display gets extremely dim, which is nice, except that the colors/blacks are way out of wack when the brightness is in the lower ~20% range.
anything remotely dark is straight black , pixel off, zero detail. photos and videos are very hard to view in this lower brightness. white text on black is okay.

Yeah the black clipping makes it tough at night. That can be addressed with software no?

Yes I would think so. Not sure when they will get around to it though, since there seems to be bigger fires to put out.
I find the display doesn't get dim at all compared to my Note 5.
Even at lowest setting, night mode, it's way too bright for night use.
I read my phone in darkness every night when the kids go to bed and I find the brightness too high.

According to Phone Arena it's minimum brightness is 2 nits so that's very low. Are you using Adaptive Brightness I feel it gets lower with it on then off at lowest as I previously posted.

I don't know. I just tested myself and at 29% Adaptive Brightness on still looks darker than at 0% Adaptive Brightness off. Maybe it's your brightness setting? Were you at 0-29% with Adaptive On? It actually remembers separate brightness levels for on and off.

Oh that was it. Adaptive was putting the slider back up.
Now much darker with adaptive on and 0%!!!
I turned off adaptive brightness as I felt it was "flickering" a lot in dim )not black) environment. To the point it was annoying as hell.
I'll have to test that 29% threshold see if that can fix it... Otherwise I'll leave adaptive off and switch on for pitch black reading.

I'm not so sure, this is only a theory & I'm no expert on this - but wouldn't it be dependent on the lighting conditions?
So if you're somewhere where you need your screen to be bright, that'd kill the battery quicker than in situations where your screen only needs to be dim.
But then there's also the sensor to think about, which has an effect on the battery, so if you're using auto-brightness, and your screen is dim for the life of the battery, it'd still use more power than if it was manually set to dim (no auto-brightness).

One day i was on auto brigthness and my on screen time was 2 hrs whereas next day under similar usage and brightness at lowest the on screen time was 2 hrs 35 min...

It does seem like auto brightness will kill your battery sooner. I used to use it all the time on my nexus one but once I found that information out I stopped.
For my sensation i just set the screen brightness for a low setting for which I could tolerate.
Although, I don't know how this happens but at times when my battery is dying faster than normal and I check the brightness setting, it is all the way up with no auto brightness checked. It has only happened a few times, but don't know what caused it, if it was my accident for which I am not aware.

I think it depends.
Auto Brightness will use up a little cpu but if it keeps your screen a lower brightness then if you didn't use it, it will probably save your battery life. If you find it keeps your screen brighter than usual it will probably kill your battery life.

I agree with you it all depends on the lighting conditions if you are in the sun all day your screen will auto adjust to max so you can see it better. If you are inside the screen will dim. I personalty keep mine on auto because I am always in drastic lighting conditions

This is a bug with the camera. Sometimes when you open the camera app it sets the brightness all the way up. sadly it's still not fixed even with the update.

yes I believe it does, on gb it was constantly flickering bright and dim. If u want custom auto brightness levels, I recommend the "lux auto brightness" app. I use it, and its amazing

I do hate that when I'm outside, if my brightness is set to 30% or so, I can't see anything on the screen. It is those little things that I miss from iOS from time to time. And of course you can't set the device to 100% or so brightness, because then the battery most certainly would not last all day.
Unless I'm in total darkness I use 100% brightness all day every day. But in the dark it hurts my eyes so I gotta turn her down a little. Battery is still pretty kick ass too:thumbup:

It is funny how in BestBuy they have all the devices on 100% brightness. They do look nice; then again they are connected to power all day

I have not had any Android phone that I liked the auto-brightness setting on. My wife's Inspire works the best out of all the Android phones we have had.
On the SkyRocket the auto setting always seems to bright for me.
I like Brightness Profiles. You can set what ever levels you want (or quickly turn on auto-brightness). I have mine set up at 4%, 8%, 12 %, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 90%. I have a shortcut on my home screen for quick access.
How much the screen brightness hurts your battery life depends on how much your screen is on, in addition to the brightness level.
Just turn off auto brightness. When you need to adjust it just slide your finger across the notification bar at the top of the screen ..side left dimmer, right brighter that's what I do.

I find it cumbersome honestly, I find lux waaaay better
I keep mine @ 100% unless it's way dark. Still get a full day of battery life under normal use too. It's really user preference.
I use juice defenders auto brightness feature. Its better then the one in the settings because it can go way under the min. brightness so at night it saves a LOT of battery since the display wastes the most battery..

So im (not) patiently waiting for my Galaxy s 3 to come here Tuesday and I was just wondering what does everyone have their brightness set to? I know that i personally am going to be hesistant to set my screen brightness to 100% seeing how my galaxy nexus suffered a burn in where you could see the keyboard imprinted on the screen. At the same time I want to have an amazing picture and I know i will get annoyed of the auto brightness =/ Anyways I know this is a weird question so I just wanted to know what everyone else was doing with their phone
I have mine at 25-30% by itself. Its kinda dark but I don't mind. Its just enough

Huge improvement over an iPhone 3G's 0% brightness.
mine is at about 30% for indoor use. The screen is darker than SG1. I could use the SG1 at 0% indoor and anything over 50% used to be painful on eyes. Not in SG3. Outdoors i have to set 80% for good visibility in SG3. I hope Samsung will give us the update for brightness control on the status bar like they did just now for the international version.

If I'm not mistaken phones tend to come with a year manufacturer warranty, personally if that's the case and you hit burn in then it should get replaced easily.
My fassy got burn in 6 months and got it swapped without issue, so I'd have no problem cranking it up if I were not concerned about battery, which I leave up now the way it is as I like seeing my screen well

50%, I got over 2 hours of screen-on time and 15 total hours of battery.
Still have it on auto and I'm on the second week of ownership of this phone.
auto brightness all the time and it is sometimes almost too dark.

I find that the "Auto Brightness" feature doesn't really work. Meaning it never adjusts the brightness at all. So I manually keep mine set to about 30% all the time. I don't keep a close eye on my battery but I don't have to recharge at all during the day it lasts me wake to sleep. I call, text, play games, and browse the net a little.
Auto brightness is garbage unfortunately but lux in the market works very well.

If you have root, you can set it to lower than manufacturer 0% with an app titled "Screen Filter." I don't have my GSIII yet but I've used this on older phones without issue.
Auto-brightness on battery, with 15 second screen timeout. (smart stay works 90% of the time, even when lit only by an LCD monitor)
100% brightness on charger, with 60 second screen timeout.
I use my own app (ChargeBright) to automatically toggle between the two settings, otherwise I'd go crazy.
Oh, I just realized that I'm not actually at 0%, but 15% (Samsung's minimum). Lux won't let you link below 15% in the free version, but it's still useful if you want to change what screen brightness corresponds with what ambient light.
I usually run about 50% but am thinking about trying auto brightness.

I have lux installed. Many times in doors or at night even 0% is too bright for me, so I set lux to - 25 or - 50. In the daytime in my car or outdoors I set phone to 100%.

I use Lux. SGS3 Auto Brightness is FAR too high brightness even at night. The lowest available brightness setting is still overly bright. Lux takes care of this and drops the brightness even lower using dimming filters. You can even customize your own Auto Brightness settings instead of being stuck with SGS3's default Auto Brightness.

Mine is usually either full dim or full bright. Using CM10.1 with the brightness slider in the notification bar option, and I hate auto.. There are times indoors that there is something in the middle, but usually it's one or the other.
100%. This screen is too beautiful, to not have lit up.

I always run "Auto". Its very snappy on every Rom I've use so far.
Has anyone else noticed this? I just got my Maxx yesterday and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, but every time auto brightness drops to the minimum the screen turns grays purple. I'm just curious if I have a defective phone or if it's just the way the panel is.

It seems reddish to me, Is this your first amoled screen? I have noticed that each amoled screen seems to have its own quirks at low brightness.

No, I've had plenty. I remember the GNex having the same problem too.
Its just the nature of AMOLED at low brightness levels, mine too is purple is down low, but really evens out by like 1/4 to 1/3 brightness
I have lux from the market. Keeps my lowest point at 18 which is perfect for battery. The phone auto brightness turns brightness all the way down which is why you see the prior tint.
