Photo quality - Google Pixel 2 XL Real Life Review

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Google Pixel 2 XL come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Not taken by the "average consumer" but I have to admit, these picks are AMAZING!!! Cant wait to have my 2XL in hand to test it out! https://9to5google.com/2017/10/07/google-pixel-2-photos-videos-samples-gallery/

Sure, they're nice photos, but if you download them and view them on a PC with a proper monitor you might be disappointed. They're not sharp or detailed, at least not compared to N6P pictures.

Are they showing being uploaded a full res?
Update:
Not sure which ones you were referring to, but these are the full res pics

Well of course there will be some twist to the camera. Once we here get them then, that can be discussed but, right now it seems a little early. I also really like pictures from the Nexus 6P the camera on that phone was amazing and can even outperform touted smartphone camera at times.
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA Labs

Yeh, they are not full res and when you reduce image size they will sharpen some, sometimes too much. As a photographer and Photoshop user don't trust or judge anything other than what you capture and display yourself.
Make sure your monitor is calibrated also.

Dunno what you're talking about, my PC is hooked up to my calibrated 50 inch Pioneer Kuro Elite and they look sharp and detailed. They're not from a full frame mirror less or DSLR.

Its great better thab my iphone 8+. Portrait mode is amazing. I jusy wished it didnt have screen and audio issue when record video.

It's very short. I kept the default HDH+ on option and after taking a pic it's done processing in maybe a second. Haven't done multiple back to back shots though. It's really good at one and done.

Anyone notice strange fluctuations in light when using Slo-Motion at 240fps? I mean it looks like the light is actually rolling ... I can't figure it out!! This is my 2nd XL 2 because of an RMA exchange and I don't remember trying it out on the first phone I had.. I'll try to get a video uploaded to show it..

Smile detection in camera. Genius!

Anybody else using this feature? I didn't know it existed until I was poking around the menu in camera last night. It basically will detect faces and then wait until the person smiles to take a picture. You don't have to press anything or do anything, makes taking portraits and pictures of people dead simple and with the fast shutter makes capturing those rare smiles much easier. Love it. THIS is what HTC needs to do more of.

I saw this feature, but haven't tried it yet. I've actually been using Burst Mode in these situations...I figure if I take 20 back-to-back pictures, at least one of them will come out right

Same here was using best shot/burst mode but the cool thing with this is the camera shutter is triggered by a smile so you don't have to press the screen which in turn gets clearer pictures because the phone can be steady. Great for unattended pictures too, just set phone up, run into shot and smile. Done.

I tried it, RARELY works. My gf had smile for damn near 3 mins before the phone finally snapped the photo, smh.

So sometimes I'm a bit dyslexic and I thought that read "makes taking portraits and pictures of dead people simple"
But anyway, does it work with multiple people?

Nexus 5 camera vs old school

So how does our camera compare to a old school one in the late 90s? In high school my sister used to be in photography and the pictures came out great.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Not even a comparison... 90s stuff just can't compete.

Granted camera's itself is good because of the lens type and aperture of the camera
you're comparing a mobile device's camera to a full sized camera
its like comparing a mini van and a truck
but for the specific question id say the Nexus 5's camera is better than that 90's piece of ****
See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49397833&postcount=1481

How does your Internet connection compare with the one you had in the 90's?

Are we talking SLR or point and shoot? An SLR is going to kick the N5's ass.
Also, why are we comparing the two?

So an slr is still going to beat the nexus 5 camera in every situation? And internet Connection is a little different then a camera comparison.

What exactly do you mean by an old school one from the 90s? Cell phone cameras have come a long way, no doubt but a 8MP camera is still not going to produce a picture that's as detailed and crisp as a DSLR camera. You might not be able to notice the difference on a small screen but try zooming in to a picture and you'll notice the difference
Wasn't everyone using film in the 90s? Better than a phone camera today if exposed correctly.

Digital in the 90's was a novelty. The cameras used a floppy disk! Not sure what the point of this thread is.

This post gave me cancer. The meme itself won't do justice on this post.

Even HTC fell for the "leak" of a 16MP camera...

I just took this screenshot off of the order page for the Verizon M8 on HTC's website. Found it pretty funny considering the "leak" hinting to it from TENAA.
I picked up the phone this morning, and the camera is one of my few complaints. Perfectly usable if you're not cropping or zooming, but falls apart quickly due to resolution. I love the super fast focus and shoot though...so I'll just be adjusting my photo taking technique I guess. Really wish they had given at least an 8mp sensor with larger pixels to preserve resolution when zooming in, but oh well.
Also, I just went through and it appears that this typo is only on the Verizon variant's checkout page. Since I'm stuck with Big Red for now, I'd have loved for this to be an "exclusive".
I believe the Asian variant has a 16MP camera but even that could have been speculation/rumors too.

I preordered the Asian variant, I'll post in this thread when it arrives. It does have a faster tuned 801 and applicable LTE bands to fit every country in the region, but unknown on the camera front.
I'll post here when i get it.

The issue wasn't HTC here. Best Buy actually hosted and handled the online ordering for the carrier versions. That's why there's a misprint. Best Buy as usual not being as accurate on their specs as they should be.

I agree. If HTC never mentioned how many MP/UP it has on the one, nobody would realize. Major placebo for quality? It takes awesome low light pictures

Can't argue with this. There's really no need for 16 megapixels on a phone. Unless you want to print poster sized photo prints. 4 megapixels is more than enough for a quality 8X10 print. If the photo isn't clear or has a lot of noise when viewing it on your computer, it's more likely due to the quality of the lens. I've also got a Cannon 10 megapixel DSLR. Cheap lenses versus quality lenses on it can make a huge difference.

That's what i'm thinking too. It has been cloudy here and I haven't been able to get a good balanced picture of the landscape and sky. It looks like it can handle clear sky pretty well. Would htc be able to really fix that over a software update though? or is it more of a hardware thing. I really don't mind the 4mp camera, it picks up decent enough detail, for my needs anyway. Really don't like the exposure issue or lack of dynamic range i'm seeing though.
Haven't really messed with settings yet.

It looks like we don't have a thread to share pictures taken with the awesome camera on this phone, so I'll kick it off with some Astro Mode shots
I have a feeling there will be a lot of astrophotography shots here lol. My tripod is broken, waiting for a new one. Going to Niagara falls next month, it'll come in handy.
