Pixel 2 Features? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I didn't get a chance to see the Pixel 2 announcement. Was there any indication of what features (new home screen, etc.) would be making it to the first gen Pixels and when that would happen?

I'm guessing we need a system dump at the very least. Maybe someone who went to the event will post it.

I meant officially. Liked if and when we should see the launcher changes on stock, etc.

With nothing to back this up I feel like we won't get the new launcher (looks like it's made for the taller 18:9 screen) or the always listening mode.
Might get always on display
Will definitely get Google lens

I think the regular pixel has the new launcher, although I don't think we will get many of pixel 2 features officially

Wow that totally slipped my mind about the smaller pixel. Well the 6p never got the pixel launcher so who knows.

I think we will get a launcher upgrade. I think not supporting the pixel launcher was Google way of saying the Nexus is dead. I can't see them doing 2 pixel launchers

I wouldn't be surprised if Pixel 1st gen doesn't get "always on" ambient display. This would be disappointing. I don't see anything hardware wise that would keep them from giving the Pixel 1st gen the same feature.

I could see them doing an aspect ratio check to determine how it displays, like murso74 said...

Anyone have guess as to whether portrait mode will make it to the original Pixels?

Always listening is already on for Ok Google. I don't see why it couldn't decipher music.

I hope it makes it to our first gen Pixels. Though, from what I've read it uses the 'dual pixels' tech in order to get the bokeh effect on the 2nd gen Pixels

Disappointed.. :(

Just received my Nexus 5 and am quiet disappointed with it.
The sound is OK, not as loud as my S3 but OK
The screen is very nice, but quiet a lot of display is used by the 'buttons'
Comparing side by side to the S3, the S3 seems to display more page.
Anyone have any comments or thoughts on this ?
Any way to get access to more of the screen without rooting it ?
Thanks

Its a nexus device, did you realize that nexus devices do not have hardware buttons before you bought it?
Not much you can do without root.
But if you do decide to root (use the guide in my signature) you can use pie controls or install a custom ROM/xposed module which will allow you to change the size of the navbar.

I realised that it had no buttons just thought it would have visible screen..
How does the nexus 5 compare to the S4, LG G2 and HTC One for useable screen space. ?

I was unhappy about the sound aswell, I rooted purely to install a sound mod that increases the volume greatly, and it doesn't have any distortion problems at all, see here.

PROS:
It's a decent price
It gets updates quick
It's fast
Camera takes decent pics in as long as nothing is moving
Design is good
CONS:
The cameras slow focus makes it next to impossible to take pictures of my new puppy.
The sound seems fine to me for speaker calling, for music not so much but who listens to music like that. I picked up a bluetooth speaker and use that anytime I want to listen to music sounds 10 times better than the speakers on any phone.
The screen size is good, the Galaxys are too big IMO feels like I'm using a mini tablet. I have the white version I don't care for the shiny edges but when my Nexus case comes I won't see them anyways.
My only other gripe other than the camera is I can't get an otterbox for it that's not the phones fault though.
Overall I'm happy with it for the price.

Why? Did you not do any homework at all prior to purchasing this phone? Are you not familiar with Nexus devices at all?
I'm so tired of these people who drop a few hundred bucks and don't even know what they're buying. It's not like the navbar is some kind of huge secret that people are discovering for the first time. It's a fundamental part of the Nexus experience, and there are plenty of other phones you could have purchased that don't have it. Complaining about the navbar on a Nexus phone is like jumping into a pool and then complaining that it made you wet.

And back to my point nexus isn't for everyone. I agree with the comments above, you should of done research before putting down a few hundred dollars on a device. The navigation bar should not been a surprise to you.
But you have a choice to return it also.

Well, there's no need to flame hard, but with all the people complaining about the N5's drawbacks...seriously? On-screen buttons? Remember what forum this is; literally all the ROMs have features to use full Immersive Mode, enable PIE, or decrease button size. Go and have a flashing day.
It's no big deal if you can use PIE or hide it or make it smaller; it's definitely something I can live with. I can't live with the ****ty perf of the S4 or the big big big bezels on the HTC One though. Worth it if you ask me...
@albert_htc these problems can be resolved by flashing custom ROMs and kernels, as well as Mods only if you're familiar with rooting and unlocking your bootloader

The navbar is not a "problem." It's an intentional feature of the device. There are mods you can flash to remove it, but they're not "solving" a problem - they're modifying or removing a feature that was intentionally included in the stock phone.
Once again, this is a standard Nexus feature that has been included in every Nexus phone and tablet that has been released since the Galaxy Nexus. This is not new, and it's not a "problem." The only problem is that there are apparently a bunch of people out there who refuse to educate themselves before plunking down hundreds of dollars on a gadget that is clearly not for them.

Sad but true. We spend $350+ on these phones we expect them to be flawless but sadly that's not the case. But what can we do we might as well unlock it's true potential and tweak them the way we want that's the reason why we chose android over iphone or for me that is
I have a custom ROM and kernel flashed and im very happy with this phone. Battery is stellar phone is snappy and I'm happy lol?

Its diffrent for all people are you more of themer guy? Get a nexus 5 as the most roms , xposed works with it.
If you just look for a good quality go for HTC One M8
If you love taking pictures go with the Note 4.
etc.....
Yes, really strange to hear the s5 was lagging for you enough to get rid of it. As for the iphone 5s, what price are you referring to? The 6's are coming out in two days so the price is very fluid right now. Are we talking $200, $400? Since Samsung and LG are out for you, how do you feel about Google, HTC?
Always attempt to avoid Apple, their products are expensive and overrated for their performance and their iOS system is so extremely closed-source that you can't really do much effective tweaking at all.
Just my 2¢.

the s5 you speaking, is snapdragon version, and its even available in india, snapdragon s5 doesnt lag, i used it.. actually exynos version is fully crap, 90% apps are not optimized for crap exynos, those are using exynos(if they are not able to upgrade smartphone)then probably they will always say exynos better, but i bet you, if marquies brownlee do review on s5 exynos variant, he will say 1 good point and 90% bad points...
+ still not 4.4 and no performance improvment update,
i am not saying samsung is crap, but tradition to india is so bad,
who cars about exynos, today world of snapdragon.. even developers phone are snapdragon may be nexus 5..
samsung need to change..

That's somewhat true, but not entirely. The worst thing about Apple devices for me is that they don't have problems too often, but when they do, they have no recovery mode or anything to fix the problem yourself. You absolutely always have to go to an Apple store to get a so-called "tech wizard" to help you out or to give you a new device.
Not so good.

Honestly Good phone but bad service,
I mean suppose today I buy z3 after 4 months they make new smart phone, they forget previous smartphone like they never made, just look at their Advt and social media, when they launch new then forget previous model like that is manufactured by other company,
And if we buy z3 their price in our country fall quickly and resale value is like no value.. It's good phone but there are many things company needs to do than manufacturing

Considering Pixel phone

Hello guys,
Let me start by giving you a little bit of context. I've used iPhones since the first one in 2007. In 2014 (after owning all iPhones), I switched to a Nexus 5 for a few months, then a OnePlus One, then the Droid Turbo until the iPhone 7 was announced last September (yes, back to iPhone after 2 years of Android). That was mainly because I was tired of a so-so OS experience, subpar camera, and outdated device.
I've been enjoying my iPhone 7 so far, but I feel like something's wrong. I am majoring in Computer Engineering and I absolutely love fooling around w/ my devices. I feel like that's gone with iOS - I can't even customize the homescreen.
With that said, I also enjoy a well built, reliable device (I use it a LOT). I would never go back to an unsupported device like the Droid Turbo. It was great at first, but it was quickly forgotten. Now, what's the case with the Pixel? I've been away from the Android community, but I read a few articles talking about multiple Pixel issues. Is this true, will I experience problems or they're just isolated cases?
I saw the phone at the store, but I feel like I need to test drive it to fully understand it. What are your thoughts?
Thank you in advance!
No issues here! Best phone is ever owned, easily. Highlights:
-Incredible camera. So fast at locking and focusing. Amazingly fast to open the app, too.
-Smoothest UI ever. Seriously, I'm no longer jealous of iOS smoothness.
-Google Photos unlimited storage at full resolution of fantastic. I never even hesitated to shoot video in 4K now. Pictures galore, too.
-Speed (beyond the UI) is unreal. Everything feels faster than I'm used to.
-Support from Google (literally, and in updates).
-Tinker abilities (good community of developers).
-Screen is beautiful and build quality is impeccable.
-Google Assistant is fun.
I would not hesitate to buy this phone. My iPhone friends are jealous.

Haha. I went through Verizon so I'm not sure how the other options are. It's tough to find 128GB Pixels. Resale would he fine, depending on which type. The Google Play version is unlockable no matter what, while the Verizon version must be version 7.1 to unlock.
By the way, I got this phone after returning LG V20 because I needed a wicked fast camera and boy did I get one. So many awesome pictures of my little kids now! They run but I can still catch them in nice photos typically with much less blur and I don't miss moments anymore!
Oh and I forgot to sell you on battery life! It's PHENOMENAL for me. Best I've had gotten, again. Today, for example... One moment... I'm currently at 33% battery. BUT, my screen time is 4 hours and 20 minutes!! I've used YouTube, XDA, chrome, Tasker, Reddit, Facebook, Textra, Metal, Gmail, etc. on and off all day. I'm on pace for like 6.5 hours of screen time! My old phones seemed to cap around 4 for my usage.

If you want to tinker you'd have to go with the google sold pixel so that you can unlock the bootloader.
The Verizon model is technically locked but there was an exploit to unlock it which was quickly patched with an update. Idk how soon you plan on getting it? If you walk into Verizon very soon and they have them in stock they should still be on 7.1 which you can unlock with dePixel8. If you wait ant longer they are going to be shipping with 7.1.1 and then won't be able to unlock it.

I came from GS7edge and iPhone 6s Plus. The battery life is better than that of GS7edge even though GS7edge has much large capacity. Android 7.1.1 on Pixel is buttery smooth. I'd dare to say it's actually a bit smoother than iOS. By the way, you can jailbreak your iPhone 7 if you're still on iOS 10.1.1.

iOS is showing its age. All Apple does now is just adding more features which slows down the iOS.
iOS 9 to iOS 10 is not the same as Android 6 to Android 7.
Thanks guys,
And lets say I get a Verizon Pixel, can I use it on T-Mo? I know that they're unlocked, but do they have the same frequencies?
Also, do Verizon Pixels get the updates as fast as the Google Edition Pixel?

I can't comment on the using on T-Mobile part but I got the update notice on my Google store phone on the 7th or 8th and my girlfriend got the notice on her Verizon store phone today. That was the same as last month too. So they're not far behind but it seems you get it slightly faster with the Google store phones.

Pixel purchased directly through Google is identical to the one purchased from Verizon with the only difference that you can't root on Verizon (if you're on the latest OS, on 7.1 you can). So yes, it'll work.
Sounds like you're on Tmobile and if that's the case, why would you not take advantage of their Pixel promo which gives you $325 in credits. Win/win!

Updates should be arriving the same day regardless of which one...
I'd watch out for buying a pixel through Verizon if you're going to switch / use it on T-Mobile. The deal on Verizon is that they charge you the same price as the Google store version but then take 15 dollars off of your bill each month. If you leave you end up paying the same thing and have no unlocking fun...
PS I absolutely love my pixel and if you can afford it I would highly recommend this phone to anyone :good:
Hey guys, so I bought a Verizon Pixel because I got a good price on a brand new unit and the color I wanted.
According to the seller, the boot loader on this one can be unlocked. Now, I don't think I wanna play with roms right now, but should I unlock it before updating? How does this work? Can I re-lock it to resell it in the future?
Thanks in advance
I feel your pain regarding your turbo. I had the Moto x 2nd gen from 2014 which never got VoLTE or updates after a few months or so.
I'd feel confident in Google provide updates to its newest phone for a decent while. Otherwise I've been happy with the features for the past couple months. Phone, battery life, pictures, etc...
Unlimited photo storage is nice...
My one qualm is with the phone a speakers. Their location causes me to unintentionally cover them when I hold the phone to watch something

You basically must unlock it before taking the 7.1.1 update or you'll never be able to unlock it again.
Sure, it can be relocked. You need to be careful though. Worry about that later!

If I unlock it just to keep it unlocked, can I remain on stock and still get updates from Google?
Thank you in advance
Have 3 Pixels on T-Mobile and it rocks

Thanks guys,
And lets say I get a Verizon Pixel, can I use it on T-Mo? I know that they're unlocked, but do they have the same frequencies?
Also, do Verizon Pixels get the updates as fast as the Google Edition Pixel?
Thanks again.

My family is using three Pixels on T-Mobile and we're very happy with them. Seems to work everywhere we need it to and the LTE speeds are excellent. Make sure you sign up for the Pixel promo as previously mentioned. I switched from AT&T and am saving a small fortune even with paying for the three Pixel phones.

4k 60fps

Is the xl capable of 4k 60fps? If so do you think we will get it?

The Pixel 3 uses the Sony IMX363 for the rear camera so it may be possible. However, they seem to not want you to use 60fps for even 1080p as there is no option for it in the stock camera app.
Will do it in the next software update.

You're too funny. You mean to say in the next model, ala Pixel 4. They very rarely "fix" things, let alone add a feature beyond the spec sheet, that are considered working as intended.
Ignore me. I am just bitter. I just sent back my brand new $850 Pixel 3 because it does not shoot in [email protected] like most flagship 2015 phones.
Better luck next time.
If you want to shoot video, nothing beats a sony phone.

Too bad you didn't check the specs first before sending it back. It automatically bumps the recording to 60 FPS when it detects fast motion or action in the scene. It's supposed to be a feature, not a bug.

Oh I did check the specs. It's says 60fps. I can't set it to 60fps. So the spec sheet is wrong. It should say "up to 60fps" or 30/auto* with small print to say something along the lines like (*we decide for your dummy, so it's variable). Then this would be correct, but that's not how this works NOR how it's works on most flagship phones since 2015.
Imagine if your TOP OF THE LINE car specs stated a top speed of 60 mph, but it automatically can go 60mph if it detects fast motion or action, otherwise it goes 30 or some variable of this. It's one thing if we were talking about the worst car on the planet, but that's not the case.
To each his own. Glad you like the new "feature" as you call it. Enjoy those 30fps 1080 videos on your $850+ phone. Have fun

I understand your preference and sarcasm, but I, and probably most consumers don't record videos very often. I don't care if a 30 second home video clip is recorded in HD, FHD, or UHD. They all look the same to me on my 5 inch screen. Buy a pixel for the photos, not the video.
Yes there is, have to switch between 60 and 30 when about to shoot video

Isn't that the auto setting discussed earlier? Or did you find another setting that says"60"

With a 3rd party camera app, you can use 1080P 60FPS.

Really ? My Pixel 2 shoots 1080p video at 60fps... That's surprising Pixel 3 does not...

Yes, I know it's not ideal, but it is practical. You don't need 60fps to record a dialogue heavy scene. You do want it during a brief moment of fast action. Supposedly, Google is smart enough to recognize when to use it. That's a feature just as much as auto HDR... which we all love.

I just saw that for the Pocophone there is a 4k 60fps mod, which enables chosing the framerate in the stock camera app. Is that (technically) possible for the Pixel 3 too?

I invite you to boycott Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL

Google has been acting like Apple since Pixel 1, A greedy company that puts the minimum specs in their flagships and selling them at the highest possible price.
Pixel 4 and 4 XL are no exception, I can tell that based on the shameful looking and shameful leaked specs. Google as a smartphone maker does not listen to their loyal audience, unlike others.
Sorry but I pre-ordered immediately after they said visit the Google Store. [emoji1]

Hey. No mention of one. I don't even think the Pixel 2 XL LED was mentioned initially and then people found it after they got it. I doubt the 4 has it though.

Got nothing else to do?

I haven't used AOD or a light notification in a very long time. I just checked my phone way too often. LOL
I'm actually looking forward to a properly working AOD. Would prefer an LED, but considering OP doesn't offer either, it's a step up either way, for me. Can't get rid of this POS OP6T fast enough. Is the hardware in the 6T in some ways better than the P4, sure. But the software is atrocious. That's where I feel google will shine.
As I agree that Google is becoming Apple like, they still put out a great phone at a much lower price than Apple.
Corporations are greed personified. Anyone who thinks otherwise should immediately sell their house and send the money to me. I promise I'll use it to fight corporate greed. A small percentage may go towards wine, questionable women, and gambling. The rest I'll waste but don't worry about that, just send the money and I promise I'll use it every bit as responsibly as the CEO of corporation X would spend it.
I invite you to stop telling me what to think
The reality is that people have unknowingly boycotted all of the Pixel devices until the Pixel 3a series (which has the highest sales numbers of any of the Pixel phones). It still didn't stop Google from pushing out new phones each year.
If anything, the Pixel 4 series will be the most successful flagship series phone Google has ever produced. That's because it is the first phone to be available on every major US carrier.
The OnePlus series was a natural boycott...
