Hey There,
Got my self a certified Pre owned note 5 from T-mobile which has been pretty fun to play with. Now I've gotten the Rom flashing bug, however my note came completely updated to the latest "N920TUVU4EQG3" firmware. Can I still just flash the latest TWRP through ODIN and then wipe and flash whatever Rom I want from the Tmobile note 5 section? Or will this cause issues?
Am I correct in seeing that there are no custom roms or custom kernels based on the latest tmobile release "N920TUVU4EQG3" firmware? I guess what I'd really like is just to run stock custom firmware with an awesome kernel and I think id be just fine.
Also do the Kernels/Roms over in the international forums cause issues for the T-Mobile variant?
Also any suggestions for someone who hasnt touched a samsung device in a few years from a flashing/odin perspective are welcomed :]
Hi, I have the same situation, somebody who know something about, so many thanks.

This might be a stupid question but here it goes..
For the i9020a nexus S model are all GSM roms compatible with it? What I mean is most of the roms that I see are built for the GT-I9020T. Is there anything I need to be cautious when flashing a rom? Or is the custom kernels or radios the ones I need to worry about? Also what Rom and kernel do you guys recommend for the i9020a version.
Thanks
As far as I know the technology in the i9020T and i9020A is absolutely identical - almost. The only difference is the 3G band on which the radio chip in the phones operates. For the i9020T it's 900/1700/2100, for the i9020A it's 850/1900/2100. The firmware is identical in the two phones (and in the i9023 LCD screen model sold overseas, for that matter.) The Nexus S that's different is the 4G model on Sprint - for that one you need a different ROM.
Before you go experimenting with ROMs be sure you have the Android SDK installed and drivers sorted out for your phone. From what I read here 90% of problems with flashing ROMs, recoveries and kernels amount to Windows driver issues. For me using Linux it was a no brainer to unlock, replace recovery and root my phone (an i9020T) and get my first ROM installed - CyanogenMod. The instructions in the i9020A/i9023 thread here on xda-developers are pretty clear http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782.
As it happens CyanogenMod didn't prove very stable for me, and the ROM I've settled on for now is Jonathon Grigg's Infin1ty http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029118. Your mileage will probably vary. Look at the ROM summary thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067813 and don't be afraid to experiment. I tried several other ROMs before I settled on Infin1ty.
I've been trying out most of the Nexus S roms with my I9020a for the past couple of weeks and I haven't run into any issues yet. From my experience, so far, any GSM Nexus S rom will work with the I9020a.
Generally, unless you really mess up flashing a radio or accidentally flash a Nexus S 4G ROM, it is almost impossible to brick a Nexus S (similar to the Nexus One, my previous phone). As long as you have one solid stable backup, you should feel free to play around with the various ROMs available. Worst case you can always restore your backup.
Enjoy!
Thanks for the advise guys one last thing is there a particular recovery clockwork I should be using for the i9020a?
Just follow the advice in the post I linked to above. Follow their instructions exactly the first time. Once you get familiar with things you can try recoveries other than the one they recommend. Keep it simple the first time though.
I need opinions and this is what you need to know
Recently bought a Nexus 5 and I am coming from a Galaxy S4 that was my first android phone and I don't know a lot on how to root but my friend taught me how to install new roms after he unlocked the bootloader
I really like how "pure" the system is on my Nexus 5 and how stable it is compared to the roms i used to install on my Galaxy s4, I also like that it doesn't require me to install a new rom everytime the old one becomes buggy.
problem is, I also liked the extra features on the roms i used to instal, like PIE and all that stuff
now... my questions are, Is it worth rooting the nexus 5(also got a nexus7) or am I better off with it like it is ?????
also, do I need to look for a rom for my specific carrier (the phone is unlocked) or any rom will work?
thanks for the help

Any rom will work (easier with a Nexus device right? ).
Rooting is worth as per your needs. Rooting will allow you to use LMT Launcher (PIE Controls and other cool stuff).
Anyways you can root then unroot if needed.

Unlike Galaxy devices, where there are a million different carrier versions of the same phone, each incompatible and with different hardware to each other, there are only 2 models of Nexus 5 and EVERYTHING is fully compatible with both.
Hi all, it's been awhile since I've done any ROM flashing (older phones) so I'm a little rusty now. I'm currently root, unlocked, CWM with stock 4.1.2 (never flashed any custom ROMs on my S3). I'm wanting to get closet to stock 4.4.4 as possible. Can I use the Nexus 5 4.4.4 firmware on my phone? Or will it not work due to it being GSM?
If this won't work, can anyone recommend a ROM of the latest android version that is closest to stock as possible? Thanks.
I wouldn't recommend flashing anything on an s3 that isn't made for s3, unless of course you happen to like buying new phones to replace a brick that you made.

Wrong firmware = BRICK
Before you flash ANYTHING read, read, read,...then read some more.

The current CyanogenMod 11 nightly builds for the "d2lte" device are mostly-stock Android v4.4.4 and very solid on this device.
Here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558946
Gummy also runs great. You can find it in the android development section.
1. TWRP is up
2. Stock 5.1.1 with baseband G920R4TYU2BOF7/HW version G9020R4.02
3. Kernel name: 3.10.61-V-Kernel+
4. No Mods
5. Rooted
Last time, I did any rooting and flashing was the original Galaxy S Mesmerize for USCC... Been using that trusty phone up until 2 days ago. I finally broke down and upgraded after 5+ years! So I'm a bit rusty on this kind of stuff.
I know when I was flashing with the Mez, I had to make sure that I used carrier-specific ROMs since there were subtleties in hardware and so on. I was wondering which of the Custom ROMs in the pinned thread in the general section of this forum were compatible with a US Cellular Galaxy S6 with the specs I listed. Here is the link to the thread I'm speaking of. Also, any hints, clues, thing to look for etc etc in determining if a ROM is compatible would be awesome.

Once again, thank you guys for all that you do.
Edit: Somewhat off-topic... OTA update keeps wanting to come through. Will OTA update undo root?
hello all, I just bought this device for around $630 in AUD brand new with a spigen case included thought it was time for a upgrade came from a nexus 5 running AICP 6.0.1 HammerheadCAF with racer caf kernel also has the latest twrp so when it comes to flashing stuff I know what I'm doing.... anyway I noticed there is very little for the s6 compared to other devices ive bought from google so can you guys point me out to the most stable, most recent custom rom, looking for little to no bloatware As it takes up in size.... as far as the device goes I have not received it yet just getting prepared for when it does arrive. need directions to rooting and custom recovery as well not sure if the bootloader needs to be unlocked? I'm aware that this device is 64 bit so is that the reason for very little mods or just lack of devs?
I also noticed that there is such a thing called alliance framework which helps with customizing the rom as well as theming am I right?
all these things are considered so with that being said I would like to know what you guys are running and whats the best out there in your opinion at this point it time
Hi,
First regarding the most stable or best ROM, I suggest you to, as you probably did with the Nexus 5, look the threads and check for complaints of bugs and features, so that you can know what's the best for you. There are lots of debloated ROMs, and most say so already in the thread title.
About the lack of development, it's due to Samsung processor Exynos. Since Samsung takes too long or doesn't even release the processor documentation and development sources, it is very hard to develop anything that is not based on TouchWiz, which is Sammy's framework on the stock ROM. Recently the CyanogenMod Team took the Galaxy S6 as an official branch, so I believe that we will have a CM based ROM soon and I hope it will bring more development to our device!
I don't know about that framework, although if it's something that is used on the S6, then you will probably find it in any development or general section.
Rooting is as simple as flashing TWRP and SuperSU, although it'll trip your Knox, which is a flag in the bootloader that shows that something was modified in your device, there is no way to reverse and on most countries it results in void warranty. If your device ships with Android 5.0.2, then you can try using Ping Pong Root (again, just check the development threads for it), which is a root method that doesn't trip Knox.
I'm still running stock since I'm waiting to try out Samsung Pay, which requires untouched Knox. So yeah, welcome to the S6 family! Hope you enjoy your device . If I forgot to answer anything let me know.
All the best,
~Lord
