Mhl Hdmi TV out Video - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, been trying like hell for info in here to search about HDMI 30 pin adapter for MHL out, but for some reason the info seems to be completely lacking.
So decided to start this thread.
I have a p5113 and the 30-pin mhl-hdmi out adapter I got mailed from Thailand. Works ok on stock ROM. Works fine on a 16:9 monitor, but if I try to output on a 4:3 monitor it blinks rapidly only. I mean the video-out blinks rapidly on the monitor.
So I tried a bunch of non-stock roms and none of them seem to work. No MHL out at all.
Is there anybody on here who has figured this out exactly? What ROMs/Kernels have MHL out actually working for p5113?
Is it true that only stock based ROMs have it working. Or are some of the rumors about non-stock ROMs having it working true?
Thanks,
Blobby

[Q] MHL Adapter not working on Samung Galaxy Note N7000

Hello All,
Search quite a few threads on xda as well as internet but unfortunately nobody have been facing issue similar to mine.
Okay, let me put it in brief. I bought an original samsung mhl adapter for galaxy s2 from ebay which presumable works well with samsung galaxy note too (haven't seen any MHL Adapter specifically for galaxy note) as heard on forums and web. It did not work. So, i got back to the vendor and he replaced it to me with another MHL Adapter. That too did not work. I got a refund as the vendor was good.
I still somehow wanted the MHL to work so went to a different vendor, known for good products (i.e. flipkart) and purchased another MHL adapter after confirming with the executives that yes it would work with galaxy note. It too isnt working.
In both the cases, the phone gets charged but there are no such notifications (notifications such as USB Host Cable Connected, or Keyboard Connected or MHL Connected etc). I have a working HDMI 1.4 cable (tested and verified), and yes, i am aware that external power is required to the MHL Adapter. .
Now, every other functionality on my phone is working well, like USB Host Mode, bluetooth/usb keyboards and bluetooth/usb mouse, data sync via usb etc etc, its only the MHL adapter which is giving me an issue constantly. Can the micro usb port on my Note be faulty ? I dont think as every other options are working fine.
I have tried all the three MHL Adapters (2 from the 1st vendor and 1 from the second) after i upgraded my phone to ICS. Are any other users facing the same issue ?
Any help is highly appreciated.
Apparently, there are problems with MHL support on ICS.

MHL adapter regarding....
hi guys,
i am also facing the same problem with MHL adapter. i tried to connect my galaxy note n7000 to sony bravia 3d tv via MHL but failed to do so. whenever i connect MHL to HDMI Cable to tv and to phone nothing happened and not even my phone or tv show any sign of connection or any notification regarding that. my phone not even show the battery charging sign. i also used 3d HDMI cable for the connection but nothing came out.... and when the vender (from whom i purchased the MHL) gave me the demo the same MHL was working fine with his HDMI cable and tv but the cable and tv he used were not 3D whereas i have a 3D tv. i dont understand why i am not able to connect the MHL adapter using 3D HDMI cable to my Sony Bravia 40HX750 3D tv with my Galaxy Note n7000. still struggling with that.... any reply in this regard will be appreciated.... thanx.

[Q] MHL to HDMI Adapter not working?

I've bought a Digitazz MHL To HDMI Adapter, but no mater which ROM I try, no matter whether I try to connect my Sensation to my laptop or my TV......nothing happens.
I don't get any notification on the phone, nothing on the TV...arghhh, the frustration.
I know the HDMI cable i'm using is fine, as links up to my freeview box ok, blu-ray player ok and my TV.
Phone is plugged in and show as charging when my phone is linked up to TV.....tried retarting phone, different Sense 3.6 Roms etc..nothing is working.
Am I not doing something, or it it prob just a case of cheap rubbish MHL to HDMI adapter I bought?
Just HTC versions of the adapter work?
any Ideas...be very much appreciated as i've tried everything.
cheers
Matt
Attached pics of the MHL to HDMI I'm using.
I used 2 types of non htc adapters, both worked.
What power supply did you connect to the adapter? I think only 1a 5v will work for mhl..

In some roms HDMI will not work. Look in change log it will tell you if it's working or not. Usually its written in BUGS section. Check your current Rom to see if it's supported . If I remember correctly most don't work but you need to check and see if that could be the issue.

MHL works on all the largely adopted roms, elegancia, ARHD etc.
Also, it's more a kernel thing than a rom actually.
The OP mentioned a couple of roms were tested. perhaps it would benefit the test to add stock as well just in case?

I'm also struggling with MHL on my Sensation. After searching the internet, the few tips I picked up that worked for others are:
1. You need to plug in power via the extra micro-USB port on the MHL adapter. Some have said that it needs a high-current power source (1A) which the HTC charger produces. 3rd party USB chargers sometimes output a lower current which some people find causes their MHL not to work. Also, using MHL seems to drain battery pretty quick and you need a high-amp power source to keep the phone charged or prevent it from draining too quickly.
2. If it is the first time using MHL, try plugging in the MHL(USB) to the phone then rebooting the phone. This is supposed to make your phone recognize and "activate" the MHL/HDMI capability(?).
3. I also read about playing around with TV settings. For one user with a Sony Bravia TV, he had to go to the tv settings -> external inputs -> HDMI and turn off HDMI device control or something.
4. Not all Sensation ROMs support MHL, for example CyanogenMod.
In my case, I bought a 3rd party MHL adapter and it didn't work the first time even with power connected to MHL. Then after (2) above, I finally saw the HDMI logo appear on the notification bar and it worked pretty well in my first 10mins of experimenting...nice picture with sound too. Then I tried playing another video and this time there was no sound from the TV. So I unplugged and reconnected the MHL connector from my phone and ever since then I have not been able to get MHL to work I'm using ARHD 3.6.1 ROM so I'm not sure if that is the problem. Still looking for solutions...
You might want to make sure that your TV actually supports MHL as not all do. I can't see how a laptop would support it, most don't even have a HDMI input?
The most trouble I've ever had with MHL is the sound sometimes doesn't work, but just unplugging then replugging the phone cures this.

I finally managed to solve my MHL problem by flashing ARHD 3.6.8 ROM...so in my case it seemed to be the ROM version that didn't work well with MHL. It mirrors my phone screen pretty well although Sensation resolution is quarter-HD so on my HD TV the picture is less sharp, but acceptable.

I have this same problem, my adapter works and shows on my phone that it connected but my TV does not support MHL as only certain TV's actually support this standard, and oh plus that fact that my current ROM doesnt support it
My Laptop has a HDMI connection and so does my HD TV....but didn't know the TV had to support MHL....I just thought it was a case of if it's a HD TV, with HDMI connections, then it would work?
Hmmm....I'm not getting ANYTHING in my notification area on my phone either though.
Gonna try some of these suggestions and will report back.
Ps: As far as Chargers and power sources etc...all mine are HTC Genuine ones.
Thanks for help guys....will be back soon, coz i'm off to experiment..hehe:laugh:

Hope all goes well in your test's, My process was to power up the adapter first using my genuine htc charger first then plus in the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV then plug the adapter into the phone last. If it does not show up on the phone notification bar to begin with restart your phone with it all still plugged in failing all of that then time for a new ROM and kernel probably Good luck

Cheers for reply, but tried differerent Roms and kernels...nothing happening.
I give up.
Matt
I've got a similar problem where not matter what ICS ROM or kernel I used it wouldn't work.
(see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31797423&postcount=17)
However, in my case, it works fine with GB connected to a Sharp TV, but for some reason not ICS!
It also works fine with ICS connected to other TVs (tested on Samsung and LG) and on a PC monitor (through HDMI to DVI cable).
Just not with the Sharp TV!
Very frustrating!
hey guys, i have been trying to get this to work but all to no avail have tried the suggestions, all of the kernels i can find ect but i am just not having any luck. i am also not having any joy with usb-otg. could the 2 be linked?
Just a couple of thoughts. I've only skimmed the thread so I apologise if I'm repeating something mentioned earlier.
I can confirm that NRG's current EnergyROM which features a stock kernel and Sense 3.6 works with MHL (at the moment MHL doesn't work on any Sense 4 ROMs as far as I'm aware).
Also, I recently visited my folks and tried to show off some photos on their TV. For some reason MHL would only work on ONE of its four HDMI ports. I didn't have the time to figure out why, but there you go. Maybe those having difficulties could visit a tv shop and try plugging their phone into a variety of tvs for troubleshooting purposes.
Other things to note: On some TVs my MHL connection works at 720p and 60hz (which is good). On others it runs at 1080i at 24hz which makes for a crappy experience (jerky).
ICS ROMs have greatly improved performance when using MHL so steer clear of gingerbread.
MIUI ROMs should also support MHL (I've tried a couple).
Finally, I sometimes use a battery pack that I bought via Amazon to power the MHL connection when I'm out and about. If you decide to experiment this way, make sure you buy an external battery that has a 1 amp output per USB port.
I'm typing this with a bluetooth keyboard while my phone is connected to my tv, so it can work : ) I bought this MHL adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/FoneM8-MHL-Cable-microUSB-HDMI/dp/B0060Z8CYK

I've only tried USB on the go once, using a dedicated USB on the go cable for a Galaxy SII and a small externally powered four port hub in conjunction with Sebsatian FM's kernel and the most recent EnergyROM. I was able to browse a flash drive and connect a wireless keyboard and mouse. I couldn't really see the point as you can't use MHL at the same time, and you have to provide external power (unlike, for example, the Galaxy Note which will allow you to plug flash drives etc into the adapter without external power).

That's weird. Got any mates with MHL enabled phones you can try your adapter on? I hate problems like this, they drive you mad and you end up doubting pretty much everything you've tried. Seriously though, you do realise MHL only works on the third Thursday of the month and if you wear underpants on your head, yeah? Oh, and stand on one leg ; ) Good luck.
Other than trying that different tv at work and possibly a different HDMI cable and MHL adapter, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

my £360 phone () or my ****ty as mhl adapter from ebay /)
i guess we shall see tomorrow :/ will be gutted if its the phone. just out of interest has anyone got this going on the XE version of the sensation? as this is what i have.
still, thanks for your input bruce said that he is going to look into fixing the mhl on his CMX nightly, so if we can get this going i will be in emulator heaven

LOL, you must work for the NHS or local government or something. Still, you made my girlfriend and I laugh : ) Maybe try a Currys or a Richer Sounds or something. There's bound to be someone in there with a decent smartphone, and there will be plenty of TVs to try too! If they haven't got a clue what you're on about, you might just educate them a bit ; )

I recently received an HDMI to Micro-HDMI cord, and was excited to test it on my 37" Panasonic.
I have tried every combination of turning on and off the TV/Tablet first etc...and it STILL will not show up on my TV. It's acting like there is nothing connected at all. No prompts.
So...what am I doing wrong? The cord I bought was 3 bucks on Amazon, so it may be a knock off or something. Buy a new cord? Any help is appreciated. Half the reason I bought this thing was to watch movies on my hdtv.

My micro HDMI cord only worked on my LG when I first selected the input on my TV and then unplugged and plugged the HDMI cord back into the Infinity. Also make sure the cord is plugged ALL the way in.
When I played NetFlix on the tablet, the TV would display the video and sound, but the closed captioning stayed on the device.

I bought a Micro HDMI to HDMI cord on amazon for about 3 dollars also, it worked perfectly fine on my 42inch LCDTV Panasonic. All I had to do was connect it and change the input on the TV to the right HDMI and it worked fine. Although watching movies with subtitles didn't work so well as the subtitles was left at the tablet screen, and I couldn't turn the tablet screen off while watching movies on my TV.
when you plug in the HDMI cord, the TF700 should show some kind of "HDMI" noticifation, and will stay on when connected. If you're not seeing this, then you'll need to figure out if it's the cord or HDMI port on one of your devices. The TV, hook something else to it that used HDMI. The cord, try another cord. Monoprice has them cheap too; probably like $5 with shipping. If you're not seeing the HDMI notification after the cord, and you know they cord is good, it's your TF.

same her it works on my monitor but i have Panasonic tv and it doesn't work tried a variety of cables and no go but tried on a Toshiba TV at parents and it works.i had the prime and it work just fine
Asus really needs to add some HDMI scaling options to the TF700 to allow it to work with more TV's - I'm assuming these issues are because the TF700 only seems to output at it's native resolution, which most devices don't seem to like... I'll do some testing with my Toshiba 1080p TV today, just to see what I can find out as well and report any findings that may be useful.

Our 58 inch Samstung plasma only sees the tablet connection on HDMI 3 which is the recommended port for a monitor hook up from a pc.

There is a HDMI encryption called HDCP that basically makes it more annoying to use HDMI than it should. Some TV's do not have HDCP enabled. Since the Infinity FORCES HDCP chances are whats happening is the TV doesnt know what to do with the encrypted signal and the tablet doesnt want to play nice so the TV will work.
Unfortunate for you, im guessing your TV is not compatible. Sorry for the bad news mate.
There have also been problems with people trying to use HDMI - DVI adapters and connect into DVI monitors, since a lot of (older) DVI devices also dont support HDCP or sometimes the connector itself doesnt have the right connections to make HDCP work often it all just doesnt work properly. Maybe in time there will be a hack to disable HDCP, until then theres not much you can do.

Again pileot... HDCP has NOTHING to do with it. Find me a monitor/tv that does have HDMI that does not have hdcp enabled..... they don't exist anymore.
If it has HDMI... then chances are 99.999999% that you have an HDCP compliant monitor.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090922221218AAyrnYz
DVI will not work because the 5v signal that is needed for the monitor to recognize that something is connected to it-- is not sent with our tablets.
Seems this question is repeated as soon as it falls off the first page......

The Galaxy S4 connectivity thread - MHL/USB OTG/BT/Gamepads and more!

Hi everyone,
Thought I would start a thread about what things people are using with their S4s.
A few findings of mine from today:
The Smart Dock works with the S4.
The S3/Note 2 MHL adapters definitely work
The S4 MHL 2.0 adapter works without needing a charging input plugged in and IS outputting at 60Hz
USB audio working, although some DACs not working that did work with S3/Note 2 (Apex Glacier not working for me, my HeadAmp Pico and RSA Intruder are)
USB keyboards/mice working with the S4, as they did with the older Samsungs
PS3 controller working over USB OTG (although mapping seems odd, have to try it in an emulator)
Ditto for the Xbox 360 for Microsoft controller (which required an app on older Samsungs in order to work)
Interesting, tried my Logitech F310 controller with it and it works too (it does not work with any other Android handset without USB/BT Joystick Centre, but here works OOTB). The F710 probably works too in that case.
BT keyboard and mouse working, as expected.
IR blaster via the inbuilt app works great with my LG TV.
Logitech F710 works too.
MHL and USB OTG do not work together using the new MHL 2.0 adapter for the S4.
NTFS formatted drives still don't work on stock ROMs. Shame since my Padfone Infinity has it OOTB.
Moga Pro gamepad working well
Tried an ethernet adapter yesterday evening: no-go. Need to check its documentation again because I suspect it requires driver installation. Have order a couple of driverless ethernet adapters that are confirmed to work with several Android tablets and will give them a go when they arrive.
Additional info on ethernet: can pretty much definitively say ethernet is not working I think. Tried today with a new adapter (that works perfectly on the Padfone Infinity in phone and pad modes, since I tried that first), does not work with S4 with or without an externally powered USB hub.
Will chime in with more when I have a chance to try more stuff out.
On the s4 MHL adapter: I find it amazing that the hdmi can carry plenty of juice to keep the s4 and the MHL adapter topped up on power. The knock off on sale at amazon still says to use external power.
Have you tried miracast yet?
BT Keyboard/mouse?
Hi, could someone please tell me if the Galaxy S4 and the new MHL 2.0 adapter allow HDMI and USB OTG at the same time using the micro usb port on the MHL 2.0 adapter? Very keen to know! Cheers!

First post updated, BT keyboard and mouse working as expected.
Not tried miracast yet.
IR blaster works a treat with my LG TV.
Definitely works without power with the S4, although it doesn't charge the phone at all used like that (unless of course you have an MHL-capable TV, I don't).

As noted above, doesn't work. Only way to do that simultaneously is still the Smart Dock.
I have a couple of questions.
1) Does the smart dock outputs 60Hz or this is achievable only with the mhl 2.0 adapter?
2) Is 60Hz mode noticeably better?
3) Any slowdowns or delays, while mirroring the display?
Thanks in advance.

I need to spend more time with it to answer those, will definitely update soon.
Regarding slowdowns - found it pretty smooth, which was a relief because the Xperia Z lagged horribly over MHL.
UPDATE:
1) Does the smart dock outputs 60Hz or this is achievable only with the mhl 2.0 adapter? Only the MHL 2.0 adapter can do 60Hz.
2) Is 60Hz mode noticeably better? Yes, compared them directly today, found scrolling webpages and so forth noticeably smoother on MHL 2.0.
Used a Moga Pro controller with my S4 to play some GTA while mirroring over MHL 2.0, nice! Still playing around with the Moga, but enjoying so far.

MHL and USB OTG do not work together using the new MHL 2.0 adapter for the S4.

[edit]Disappointing to hear =(
I've gotten a lot of use out of this OTG microSD adapter. The native "My Files" app on the S4 instantly recognizes it as USB storage.

Yeah, only way is to use the Smart Dock.
Could somebody please test if a USB to Ethernet adapter works via OTG cable?
Cheers

just to add something ive used,i have the moga game controller that connects bluetooth works perfect, and last night i messed around with the mhl to hdmi adapter and had it hooked up to the tv and was playing games on the tv using the moga controller ran so so smooth felt like i was playing an xbox, i do have a question if anyone can answer about the mhl i have a yamaha surround sound, usually i use a fiber connetion from what ever device tv, cable, blue ray, whatever, so the reciever u can send hdmi threw it so u can take the device into the reciver and then theres and out to the tv to get the picture witch worked with the phone, but i couldn't get and audio to come out of my surround sound it came out of the tv but i want the surround to work, whats my best option any help would be appreciated
Imagine my surprise when I connected mine to my MS Surface pro. It was immediately recognized, nothing to install and I was able to browse contents of both internal storage and my microSD card!
Whats a recommended OTG cable to get ?

Tried and tested hdmi output cable?

I'm finding tons online - most of them look very cheaply made. I've read many reviews complaining about them not being compatible with various Android devices. Can someone recommend one they actually have and are satisfied with? Thanks.
I'm using the 11-pin Samsung MHL cable (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080CXSOU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and AllShare Cast dongle with Amazon Basics HDMI cable and it works perfectly fine with our LG and Samsung TV's on both my Note 8 and S3. I've also got a fine MediaBridge that works.
Where the problem most often occurs is HDCP issues. Adapters from HDMI to D-SUB (sometimes called VGA) or DVI ports can often not work at all or render only at VGA resolution (640x480px). AllShare Cast seems less picky than the MHL, at least that was my experience with my S3 and the S2 MHL cable+11-pin adaptor under stock ICS/JB firmware. I have HDMI/DVI adapters that work and don't work, and a HDMI/D-SUB that gives me 720p instead of VGA with the AllShare Cast dongle.
When it comes to custom ROM or silly stuff like Miracast, obviously YMMV.
