For A while I spent a great deal of time trying to get screen mirroring working on the Amazon tablets. I posted my research on the Fire 7 forum, when I should've also posted here. I am happy to report, screen mirroring works 100% prefect, and do NOT need root access. My Fire HD 8 is currently on FireOS 5.4.0.0. I am only posting my results of my work in this thread. You can read my research in the other forum. I hope everyone has fun with this. Though I didn't actually do anything to get it working. All the credit goes to developers like @ggow and LineageOS for helping to make the process a reality.
---------------------------------------------------
So I just wanted to update everyone. I still own my Fire HD 8 and I recently unlocked the bootloader to my rooted XT907 phone and flashed Marshmallow Lineage 13. I also acquired a Fire 7 rooted and also with a custom ROM, Fire Nexus (From XDA). I also now have a Samsung Galaxy S7, unlocked from carriers and rooted. I am happy to report, with the right app, the entire thing works perfect across all devices, rooted or not.
My current device list:
-Fire HD 8, 2016 - No root, bootloader locked, stock ROM
-Fire 7 2015 - Rooted, bootloader locked, custom ROM
-Motorola Droid Razr M - Rooted, bootloader unlocked, custom ROM
-Samsung Galaxy S7 - Rooted, bootloader locked, stock ROM, carrier unlocked and not attached to one
Unfortunately Google, your manufacturer and your service provider, all went through extreme measures to block out the functionality on many levels, especially older devices running Lollipop and KitKat. As such it's almost impossible to get the process to work for more than a few seconds on those devices if at all, and that's even with root. So many of the abilities and functionalities had been blocked or deleted and the damage can't be undone on older Android devices, again especially those with KitKat and Lollipop (unless custom ROMs for those versions). In order to 'fix' such damage on those devices, I truly believe the only way to do so is to start that particular OS over from scratch, rewriting the entire code so those functions work in harmony. Like a string of Christmas lights, If one doesn't work, the whole thing crashes. At least developers like @ggow and ones at LineageOS know about such things, and because of their continued hard work, are able to bring those functionalities alive. It truly is a shame this can't be brought out is a more vast range of devices because 'screen mirroring' really is cool.
It appears that Amazon does NOT really block the functionality, at least on the HD 8. It's more like they make it difficult for you to acquire working apps in order to get the process to work. I searched far and wide and trust me, of the few I did manage to get working, they use functionalities built into the app, rather than stock components. Except for one: RemoDroid. It looks like an outdated piece of software and even feels like it. It's only purpose is to bring out the stock screen mirroring functionalities in the device it's installed on. But again, like Christmas lights, if the functions are severely blocked, it won't work.
I can screen mirror to and from every one of these devices now. It appears the more recent devices have the functionality intact, including the Amazon HD 8, and possibly the rest. RemoDroid uses the actual built in 'cast screen' software to capture and send. If you pull down the statusbar, and look at your quick settings, you will see the 'cast' icon is turned on and in use by RemoDroid. Just make sure the devices are all on the same Wifi network and the process should work. If it doesn't, one of your devices isn't compatible and likely won't be. You can thank Google, your manufacturer and your service provider for that. They won't rewrite your OS so you're likely to be locked out of screen mirroring indefinitely.
I will make a video at some point to show it working on my non rooted, stock Fire HD 8 so everyone can see it in action and be able to have fun with it. Instructions posted below this post.
Video Here
Instructions
1) Download RemoDroid and install on your HD 8.
2) Install RemoDroid on a device that has ability to screen mirror, but no software to do so (Like the HD 8)
3) Make sure both devices are on the same WiFi network. Start the app on both devices. If rooted, grant the app root access. On the HD 8, ignore the no root warnings.
4) On the HD 8, tap 'stream', ignoring the warnings.
5) On your other device, tap connect. In a few seconds your HD 8 should appear on the list. Tap it. Your HD 8 screen is now being mirrored to your device :highfive:
6) On that device, tap the back button and tap ok to stop the connection. On the HD 8, stop streaming.
7) On your other device, tap 'stream'
8) On the HD 8 tap 'connect' and select your other device from the list. You are now mirroring to your HD 8. :highfive:
Sooo.... I just did the normal method for 5.4.1 and I had no problems? Was there a knew update that my firewall stopped?

Are you asking in the right thread? I don't understand the question.
Hmm, what the reason to cast/mirror screen to the another (probably, with a smaller screen) Android phone/tablet? Screen mirroring has sense if you streaming to the large TV screen only but RemoDroid can't work this way.
And I'm unsure what the Fire HD 8 has a WiFi direct enabled network adapter (maybe, it's a prime reason why this functionality isn't implemented yet).

It is enabled. And I've been trying to get it to work from device to device as opposed to a TV.

I understand that. What I don't understand, why do you need casting from device to device first, what do you mean by "internal casting software" second, and why do you waste your time for this useless RemoDroid, third?
This app, Screen Stream Mirroring Free is working fine for the screen casting to DLNA renderer or Chromecast dongle (tested on both, on the 55'' smart TV screen). Of course, it's a little slower than Miracast (i.e. WiFi direct) but Fire HD 8 don't have Miracast (or WiFi direct) support at all (probably 'cause of incompatible WiFi chip but I don't really know, may only guess).

It's not about needing. It was fun (and still is lol). In KitKat 4.4 the technology was blocked in Android, from the source code to the software level. Some of the "internal" functions needed for it to operate (software like a casting and receiving app known as a source and sink) were blocked in the framework (/system/framework/framework-res.apk) and other parts were blocked in the WiFiDisplay configurations in Android's source code (/system/etc/wifidisplay_config.xml) and so on. That app you speak of works to use Chromecast, but not device to device. (I've tried dozens of apps and root tricks etc). RemoDroid is the only one to use the available software that isn't blocked and make up for the rest.
Wifi direct can be found in the hidden settings using Activity Launcher. It's tied into Cast Screen (hence my research months ago). I can get the tablet to connect to at least two other devices directly. What to do from there? *Shrug* Ask Amazon...they blocked that out too.

Could you please expand this? Are you still talking about Amazon Fire HD 8?
[UPDATE] Just installed Activity Launcher on Fire HD 8: there is no "Cast Screen" activity found.
[UPDATE 2] As far as I understand, this "RemoDroid" app is not using WiFi direct; it working with HTTP protocol and own built-in HTTP server. It has NOTHING TO DO with the real screen casting; it uses slow HTTP protocol (and own plugin) to display screen content on the other devices. So, it's ineffective, slow and with huge lag. Definitely, it's not a WiFi direct/Miracast.
So I still don't understand your point. BTW, are you developer?

I said because it's fun. I've been researching this for months and it's there. I have both an HD 8 and a Fire 7. Cast screen was there as of 5.4.0.0. Using Activity Launcher, it's in the settings menu.
Does there need to be a point to this? No. I never said there was one. And you're not obligated to use this function, but this was what it was to do originally.
I'm not a developer nor do I claim to be and never have claimed to be one.
OMG, now I understand! Man, you should better explain your finds and don't mess up with the completely different topics.
First, your assumption what everyone is very familiar with the third party app called Activity Launcher is wrong. I've heard that name a very first time from you here (btw, thanks a lot for the reference!)
Second: you are right, WiFi direct screen casting still here (but for some reasons Amazon made this setting hidden/not available). Here I made a pretty simple and small instruction (it's what I tried to get from you ):
- install Activity Launcher from the Play store;
- start it, scroll to the "Settings" app, tap on "Settings" to expand;
- you'll see all "Settings" app activities and may pin (make shortcut) "Cast screen" activity to your start screen or just launch it!
This is a really good find but you need to explain it properly at the OP
P.S. As for app you've mentioned (RemoDroid): it has nothing to do with the WiFi direct/Miracast (i.e. standard Android screen casting technique) but it's a nice and probably funny third party app, using own technique (HTTP) to emulate screen casting. But - fortunately and thanks to you - we can use the very standard Android screen casting!
P.P.S. Tried on my dongles: works pretty fine with Chromecast, cheap Chinese Miracast (bought for a few bucks on aliexpress), Windows 10 with the Realtek RTL8811AU USB dongle. Not working with the Microsoft Wireless Adapter.

Sorry I had assumed you read the link to my research. You are right I should explain it better. If you have appwidget active on your launcher, you can make 'cast screen' a shortcut on your desktop, but it has to be enabled again if you reboot.
As it stands now, the cast from device to TV is what it is for. The original idea was to do to or from ANY device. If cast were in the quick settings on the pull down, you would see RemoDroid using the cast function. Remo wouldn't work on my KitKat 4.4 because the functions internally were too blocked. If you look in the HD 8 build.prop you'll see the properties exist to allow casting and wfd to work, which allow Remo and the Chromecast to function. Most custom ROMs enable the feature so it works on any device, as it was meant to and much easier.
I also noticed the video uploaded improperly. That was my fault as I didn't grant proper permissions to my camera app.

"Appwidget" (whatever it is, probably, another third party app?) isn't necessarily for this, "Activity Launcher" can create permanent shortcuts (I not tried to reboot but looks like it's a permanent - at least, until Activity Launcher isn't uninstalled). Just a long tap on item and choose "Create shortcut" from popup menu.

I discovered appwidget in /etc/permissions. It is a script that allows launchers to use widgets, even though Amazon blocks it. They just did a write up about our thread related to it on XDA news. It also allows the creation of shortcuts. So you can long press the cast screen activity using Activity Launcher to make a short cut on your launcher's desktop.
"Activity Launcher" creates a shortcuts, not a widgets Here is a source code, and this is a SO question (code based on)
Small tip: if you don't like standard "gear" icon, you may install any app with better icon, and tap "Edit shortcut" in pop-up menu (instead "Create shortcut"). With the edit dialog, you may tap on the gear icon and select any from already installed apps primary icons.
P.S. Shortcut will remain the same (and will work too!) if you uninstall app with selected icon, and even you uninstall Activity Launcher.
BTW, @DragonFire1024 (I forgot to ask you), have you found a way to avoid "Fire Launcher" flickering by pressing home button? I remember something about substitution of standard buttons with third party "tricky" app but I don't like that solution (and it has some cons, AFAIR).
I found and tried your advice but it doesn't work for me: everything came as described but I'm getting permanent flickering of back/empty screen. I'm on Fire OS 5.4.0.1
P.S. Played for a little with second advice (about "Multi-action Home button"), and now can't get rid of the "The requested action is not permitted. Check Parental Controls settings and retry" Any advice? Should I reinstall "Fire Launcher" and uninstall "Multi-action Home button"?

If you can still downgrade Fire Launcher, you can "fix" that in this thread. If successful, follow the steps below to "fix" the recent's button:
1) Open Activity Launcher, tap top left and select All Activities.
2) Scroll to System UI section and tap it. Long press 'App Switcher' and create a shortcut. Place it as close to the recent apps (the square button) as possible. When you want to swipe close your apps, use that shortcut. You'll avoid parental warning.
EDIT: Just noticed you linked to it. At the time, that fix worked. If it no longer does, then you are out of luck as of the moment. Since you cannot uninstall/disable apps anymore, you can't downgrade it.
I ended up with the factory reset. It looks like this "bad magic" is not working anymore, by result you can "achieve" just a non-working home button only
However the pros is: after reset and reinstalling, the "flickering" become significantly faster (or no flickering at all), now Nova Launcher mostly working like a normal launcher on Android OS. However I can't set (after reset) Google Now Launcher as a default launcher, LauncherHijack didn't see Google Now as a launcher, only Nova available. So, bye-bye, "OK Google"
Conclusion: will never touch that stuff again, FireOS with Google services working pretty fine, and don't need other "improvements".

It's a lot easier now and more likely to work on newer android versions now that Google redid the way Chromecast works. When I had started my research months ago, close to maybe a year now, it was far more difficult, at least on these tablets. It's a very long story.

I'm trying out the Touchpad as an RDP client for my work Windows machine. With a Bluetooth keyboard and iTap RDP, it works very well, but one thing that's annoying is that Android/ICS traps certain key combinations instead of sending them through to Windows, e.g., ALT+TAB (Symbol+Tab on the HP Touchpad BT keyboard) and WIN+TAB (Home+Tab on the HP keyboard). Another one that gets trapped is WIN+E which should open an Explorer window but instead tries to launch the Android email client. Does anyone know if these Android keys can be disabled, ideally just while the RDP client is running, but worst case scenario, across the board?

I tired this and could not get it to work.. If you have got it working please post.. I have a TF101 and with the local keyboard I really want a way to use the alt tab / windows key tab options.. but both go to Android local... If anyone has a way of getting around this I would love to hear it!
ALT TAB locally really is not required when you have the nice button for recent apps
go to /system/usr/keylayout/ and see which .kl needs to be changed and where. theres a few to look at but you should find one that matches your input device.

As far as I can tell, it's not a keylayout but rather a CyanogenMod-specific enhancement to make Android work more like a desktop OS when used with an external keyboard. The problem is that it acts as a system-level override for those keybindings so that they're not passed to applications such as remote desktop clients. I've considered trying AOKP to see if it does the same thing.
I'm interested in getting a Nexus 10, especially if someone releases a keyboard cover similar to the one for Surface, as a lightweight laptop replacement, especially when used to access a Windows machine via remote desktop, but I have such a heavy dependency on ALT+TAB in my day-to-day habits that it would be pretty annoying to have that key take me to another Android app instead of switching Windows apps. Not a show-stopper, but definitely an annoyance. Hopefully standard Android 4.2 doesn't do this...
I coincided installing Linux on my tf101 as I was so upset about it.. however there is not a easy way... it would be nice to see a option to disable it for in custom roms..
I don't think 4.2 will change the behavior at all.. sadly

I know this doesn't help many folks here, but the kind folks at Jump Desktop somehow figured out how to circumvent Apple's restrictions on key events in iOS and got full keyboard support going when accessing Windows and Mac machines via RDP and VNC, so that's what I'm using very happily now from my iPad 3.
I have created exactly what you need
Hey, all, I don't know if you'll see this, but I figured out where in the android code it intercepts this and fixed it with an xposed module, which you can grab here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/keyboard-utilities-t2872579/post55350032
---------- Post added at 10:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 PM ----------
Also, as far as win-E and related shortcuts being consumed, that's handled by an android setting called quicklaunch, which is present in the settings app, but there's no easy way to access it. To get to it, grab nova launcher or tasker or anything else that can launch app's activities directly, then find the quicklaunch activity under the settings app. This is where you register and unregister shortcuts with the windows key and the search key. Long press on the shortcut to clear it. By default, Win-E and a few others are put in for you.
Workaround
A bit old question, but i was looking for an answer today, and did not found anything that matches my needs. Not sure if it will satisfy You, but i got a little workaround. Actually you don't need to do anything with your android device, the only thing you need for this is AutoHotkey software on your windows machine + one little script running.
How it works? It remap left ctrl+tab to act like alt+tab. That way you can use ctrl+tab(or any other combination you want) and android has no problem with it.
Script content:
LControl & Tab::AltTab
Hope it helps, it worked for me.

so this might be turnoff to some but you are on xda. we need a magisk module or something that can do this for us.
if you can disable system wide keyboard shortcuts, it would be great. and by shortcuts here is what i mean (look at the attached screenshot). in my case. i have my rog phone 3 connected to a usb c hub that has usb, hdmi, etc. (please do not tell me about the rog phone 3 and how it might have this built in because i have a custom rom installed and im sure you can do this in almost any android version there as well because its a stock rom)
my case is i use shadow (cloud gaming/computing) and so i remote control into a windows machine. i would love to disable those shortcuts so that my keyboard inputs are not interrupted by androids shortcuts.
if i alt tab or press the windows button. i dont want the android shortcuts to trigger.
please let me know if you found a solution but this most likely is achieved through adb or root. lets do actual investigation.
WebSharing is an app that lets you view/transfer files and media between your Android device and a computer using a Web browser over a Wi-Fi network. The 1.x version line has been out for an age (since '09), this thread is about 2.0 and future development.
The 2.0 beta is currently available, I'd greatly appreciate any help testing it. See next post for info on obtaining it via Google Play Store beta channel and/or direct download.
The most significant improvements in 2.0 (vs 1.x) are:
Drag-and-drop file/folder uploading (included in the free version, without any limitations).
Holo UI in the Android app, and in the web browser.
Flash is no longer required for advanced features (they're all implemented in HTML5 with Flash fallback).
Still no ads.
To start using WebSharing, make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi, then open the app and tap the "Start" button. You'll see a screen like the one below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Follow the directions on the screen, pointing your computer's Web browser at the address shown. You'll then see a WebSharing welcome screen that looks like this:
Enter the random generated password and click "Continue". (You can set a permanent custom password in the settings, if you prefer.)
Once you're logged in, you can browse around the filesystem. Double-click to open or download items. Single click to select them. Ctrl+Click to select multiple items. Use the pulldown menu in the upper left corner perform file operations, or just right-click on files.
WebSharing 2 has an all-new HTML5-based file upload system:
Files can be uploaded by dragging them into the browser window.
You can drag multiple files in at once.
If you use Google Chrome, you can upload entire folder hierarchies by dragging them into the browser.
You can drag in more files while files are uploading, they'll be added to the queue.
You can navigate to other folders while files are uploading, and then drag files into those locations. They'll be added to the queue as well.
You can also use the "File" menu to upload files if you'd prefer not to use drag-and-drop.
Older browsers can still use legacy file upload controls.
You can click anywhere in the upload progress area to see a detailed view of upload progress.
In 2.0, the multiple file upload system is now a free feature (in 1.x, only the paid version allowed multiple file upload via a Flash-based control).
All of this is provided in the free version, without any limitations.
When files are dragged in (or uploaded using the File menu), the progress bar will appear at the bottom of the screen:
All the features shown up to this point are completely free. Like FX File Explorer and WebSharing 1.x, the paid version of WebSharing adds media support, i.e., direct access to music, photos, and videos.
In the full version, you can click the music tab to browse/play music. Double-click on a track to start streaming music from the phone to the web browser. You can listen to streamed music while performing other tasks.
You can browse music by track, artist, album, or playlist. The screenshot below shows the by-album view. Music can be directly uploaded by dragging files into the music view. Files uploaded here will be placed in a folder that you configure in the app's settings (the default is the "Music" folder on your device's primary storage/SD Card).
Clicking the photos tab allows you to browse all images stored on the device. The new "Thumbnail Size" slider can be used to zoom in/out.
WebSharing uses my usual free/paid model:
* Free version is free, paid version is cheaper than dirt.
* No ads in either version.
* Free version is not a watered down trial with a bunch of limitations. It's very usable and many users will only need it.
* The paid version adds more stuff.
* Neither version phones home, collects personal information, or does any other "doubleplusungood" things.

Diagnostics shows it's unable to ping, yet it's able to make an internet connection. Both devices are running 4.3 AOKP. What should I check?

Thanks for reporting this!
In the diagnostics, does it show a "wlan0" item (or similar) with a valid IP address?
And WiFi is the only means this thing could get to the internet, correct?

Yes, IP is valid. Right, the N10 is Wi-Fi only. I did try using my N4 as a hotspot and got the same results, so I guess that takes my router out of the equation. Here are a couple of screenshots of the diagnostics window:

One more question that I forgot to ask...is it accessible if you just enter the address anyway, or is it just the diagnostics that are failing?
I have seen a lot of issues with the ping command on custom ROMs on the N10. I forget if you were one of the reporters of this, but with FX, the feature where it checks if network hosts are available was causing N10s with certain ROMs to spontaneously reboot. The exact same code ping library is being used in FX and WebSharing (which in turn just calls /system/bin/ping).

Aha, it is accessible on my PC (but I don't have the password to enter).
Yes, I remember that ping issue with FX (even remember which ROM it was). But both my N4 and N10 are currently on the same ROM (4.3 AOKP official). Are different libraries used anyway? If you like, I could try another ROM and see if that makes a difference.
Edit: Curiously got the best of me, . I flashed a different ROM (Purity 4.3, which is JWR based, as opposed to AOKP which is JSL), and, sure enough, no problem with ping. So I guess it is specific to certain manta ROMs. Is it possible to have similar settings as in FX to disable the ping command, or is that essential to the app's function?

The ping bug I've seen was pretty specific to the Nexus 10 (but might have seen one other device do it too). I still find the general ping problem the oddest bugs I've seen. I have at least three reports of it from N10 users on three different ROMs.. I want to say AOKP, CM10.1, and maybe Paranoid Android as well. I think some have fixed it, but I have no idea what the underlying problem was.
You can disable the connectivity monitor altogether, go into Settings->Network Settings and then uncheck "Connectivity Monitor". That might completely fix this problem.
I think I'm going to disable this feature by default in the next version. It was initially implemented to work around issues with certain devices that would shut WiFi off or otherwise put it into a lower power mode that would often cause it to drop connectivity. Devices would enter this mode when the screen was turned off. The Nexus One was particularly offensive in this case. There's now a far better workaround in WebSharing (and FX) for this issue, i.e., using a "high performance" WiFi lock. This API flag to use the "high performance" lock was documented in Android 2.3 or 3.0, but was undocumented in 2.1, 2.2., and possibly 2.3 (though it's existed since 2.1 I believe). On these devices, a "normal" WiFi Lock wasn't adequate, so WebSharing would alert the user if it saw connectivity drop out, and more importantly, briefly turn the screen on and off. The connectivity monitor itself was left in as it still can be a useful feature.
Works fine with my phone (LT26i, CM10)!

It was Mr. Robinson's Buttered AOKP 4.2.2 that had the problem. This is how you explained it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40751452
I passed along the info to them and it was fixed in a subsequent release, but re-emerged later, so I stopped using that ROM. I've seen it once in 4.3, but I forget which ROM.
Disabling connectivity monitor in Settings does fix things. The curious thing, though, is that it is enabled in FX and there are no problems. Aren't both apps using the same mechanism to ping?

Ping command does appear to be the same between FX and WebSharing. It could also be that everything's working fine and the router just isn't set up to respond to pings.

They are similar, both good.
This one is simple, doesn't require account, has webdav support (so you can add the phone as a web folder in Windows).
I usually use ES to share files between PC and phone, but a desktop browser interface with integrated viewer/player is a good alternative.

This is the second time you said "webdev", when what I think you mean is "webdav". Maybe you have some auto correct on, but if not I just thought it would help those that may not know what it is.
Primarily for dutch UPC customers ( who have a Horizon / Samsung SMT-G7400 mediabox )
Current version: 1.0-alpha
HorizonRemote is currently in alpha state and is still in active development.
The alpha version is build for Android 4.x+ ( min SDK level 14 ) in future version I might add backwards compatibility to 2.x
Source is available at https://github.com/rogro82/HorizonRemote
Requirements:
UPC Horizon media-box ( Samsung SMT-G7400 )
Android 4.x device
Post installation notes:
After installation click on "Settings"
In settings click on "Add controller"
Click on the newly created "Controller" in the list.
Give the controller a name as you want it to be shown and enter the IP-address of the media box ( currently there is no device discovery )
You can now go out of settings and you should see the controller..
Usage:
After selecting a controller you should see the remote controller layout and in the ActionBar ( right top ) it should show a status indicator.
This indicator shows the status of the connection with the mediabox. It might show as disconnected after network-loss or due to inactivity. In case of disconnection you can either click the status icon or just press a key on the remote.
In case you have setup multiple controllers you can easily switch by opening the left drawer by either pressing the statusbar icon or by doing a left edge swipe.
Additional input:
Clicking the "ABC" button on the remote should open an on-screen keyboard ( be aware that the MediaBox only supports limited input characters like A-Z ).
The volume up/down keys are currently hardcoded to send channel up/down commands.
Notice:
* In case of issues please be clear and give as many details as possible.
Was doing my usual "UPC Horizon Android" search and your post just popped up. Very glad to see your project, and hope to be beta testing soon!
Cheers!
Wow, really cool. Was waiting for this for a long time. Hope to be testing soon!
Basically most stuff is working ( buttons, onscreen keyboard etc ) and the biggest thing todo is adding settings.
If I have enough free time I might have an early beta tomorrow and else somewhere in the next few days.
Updated first post with first alpha release.
Be aware that this is an alpha-version and it might contain bugs.
If you come across an issue please be clear and as detailed as possible.
Currently it is build for Android 4.x+, but later versions might receive compatibility to Android 2.x
Thanks, nice work!
Works on my Samsung tab3 10.1 (Android 4.2.2)
After only 10 minutes of testing I didn't encounter any errors.
However, maybe I will stick to my Harmony One, this IR remote controls my HDMI AVR, TV, media player, BR player, Horizon.
Thanks for the effort so far. I'll be giving this build (and future builds) a swing tonight.
This. App. Is. Phenomenal!! And it's absolutely faster than the (new) double sided RC!
You've just created what UPC just can't (or won't?) do for the last year!
Which IP to use??
Hi guys,
Wich IP address did you use in the app?
I used the same address to wich you browse to set up you're network. But unfortunately no response from the box.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

K friends of mine who have UPC should no longer give me access to their WIFI network as their recordings might magically disappear :angel:
So people be warned... as you are not able to turn of UPnP on the mediabox ( atleast not that im aware of ) anyone who has access to your WIFI network
is able to remove all your recordings without any form of approval / security.

I've been using the 1.0 alpha for a week now and I haven't encountered any problems at all.
Only minor 'issue' is that the app doesn't fit my screen entirely (Galaxy SII i9100), the last four buttons (RW, REC, Play/Pause, FW) are only visible after scrolling down. This could be solved by removing the top bar with the controller name and connection status. Perhaps you can highligt the chosen controller in the sidebar and replace the app icon with the connection status of the chosen controller?
Besides the above mentioned I'd say: make it beta or release it already!
Thanks again!
Works like ronseal!
Nice one Rogro82!
All buttons function quicker than the real remote. A sterling job.
I'm guessing you used a packet sniffer, which leads me to the question, do you have an ipad with the 2 UPC apps on there, and do you fancy having a go at replicating one of them?

I actually don't have an apple device laying around so I wasnt able to use a packet sniffer.
At first i just did a basic port scan using nmap ( linux ) and figured the opened VNC port wouldnt be there without any use.
Connecting over VNC with most clients failed because they all expect to get a window size larger then 0x0.
Ubuntus build-in Remmina client however didnt loose connection but just presented an empty screen, but I was able to open the info screen on the mediabox by pressing enter and was able to send normal a-z commands in the search screen, but all other media keys werent mapped to any normal keycodes.
So i wrote a small command-line VNC client to scan the entire keycode range to see if I could find all remaining buttons and after a night of scanning and testing I basically figured out the rest of the keys ( which can be found here https://github.com/rogro82/HorizonRemote/blob/master/HorizonRemote/jni/include/keys.hpp ).
I might borrow an ipad one day to check out the official apps, but when it comes down to managing recordings I will not need an actual device as the interface how scheduling etc works is pretty much self-explanatory. Removing and scheduling recordings and other media related tasks are entirely manageable over UPnP and sadly like many other UPnP services without any form of authentication.
So anyone on Ubuntu ( or any other linux distro ) can control his box using tools like gupnp-tools or something similiar and so can anyone else on your WIFI network ( unless you take your own precautions like blocking UPnP ports ).
A recording interface itself wouldnt take too much time to write, but the whole EPG might be a bit more work ( although that data is also accessible over UPnP ).
Currently I am very limited in free time, but as soon as I will have some more time to spend I will take a closer look into the widevine streams to see if there is anything blocking support on Android.

I installed the app earlier today and I'm pleasantly surprised about it's stability for an alpha version. But mostly blown away by the speed, like others said before you have managed to do what UPC haven't been able to until now.

Smart IR Remote was accepted from the first try into Samsung Apps, and no you can download it from here:
http://apps.samsung.com/mars/topApps/topAppsDetail.as?productId=000000880593
It has ALL the remotes included in the phone app, with all the buttons, so you're no longer limited by the WatchON app to control your devices.
When it comes to features, obviously this is a phone so the edit mode will be simply a method to delete useless buttons, and that's why we put the "Lite" stamp on it. We're working on a way to fully edit the app though!
Best of all: this app is free for a limited time, until we make it a "full" app. We might keep it free forever for people who bought the app for their phones though!
Feel free to report any issues, bugs or suggestions!
Very slick.
Works well with my Sky box.
Sadly doesn't support my Sony TV - KDL - 40L4000 so need to find something else fully compatible - which isn't easy.
Definitely appears better than the sammy remote
Don't let that take away from your efforts though. This was 100% needed, works exactly as advertised and even allows you to customise the display.
With a bit of work I'll have this setup even better than my harmony.
Some feedback may be to allow you to add buttons for different devices to the same screen, hich would help us users with AV systems and different bits doing different jobs. Either that or support for activities that support mutliple devices. i.e. Activity - TV: Amp used for volume, Sky box for channels, tv for picture settings etc.
Nice!

As for combining remotes .. we're getting there Just you wait and see
@RiverCity.45 I know, a real pain. We're trying to figure out what exactly causes it and to see if there's anything we can do on our end to fix it.
Oh man, I've loved the Smart IR app ever since I discovered it. Can't wait to get this rolling on my Gear 2!
I am running into a weird issue though - for some reason, the app installed fine - I of course don't have a remote set up in the Gear 2 app, so it asks me to choose a remote. Press continue, list of device categories. I choose a category, and it loads forever. No error message or anything. I tried restarting both devices, but no luck. I'm wondering if it might be because of the ROM I'm using (Dynamic Kat 4.1). I do occasionally see "The app can't reach our servers, please try again later", but after a minute or two it just starts loading forever again.
About how long should it take to show a list of devices? Any other ideas of what else to try?
Great work! This was the app I was waiting for, finally I can manage all my sound&tv devices. Thanks a lot.
Combining buttons from multiple devices would be great. Glad you are working on it. And maybe one up swipe for the power toggle of all devices at once?

Could be the ROM, but it's unlikely, especially since the list of categories actually does show up for you. It shouldn't normally take more than a few seconds to load. Does this happen on all categories? Can you try reinstalling ?

Awesome!!! This is my favorite app on my phone! Great job guys!!!
app is nice. However, my first intention was to find and test devices that I copuldn't control with WatchOn.
For example, I have an Arcelik air conditioner , model 15040. On the app, I could find Arcelik 15030. It didn't power on my 15040. Are they really different ?
Can you add it ?
Also, I saw that Philips LivingColors is available in "home equipment " category. AFAIK, LivingColors does not use IR to control. Instead it uses Zigbee (Smartlink) wifreless protocol. And I tried it with my LivingColors and didn't work.
How can we make this work with LivingColors ?
Thanks.
Not showing up for me in the app store. Gear2 Neo/S5 Active
I would like to be able to edit the layout of a control on the phone. It a bit clunky to do this on the watch.

That was my impression as well - it's working somewhat, just not letting me see the devices within the categories. So far, I've tried a few categories (TV, Audio Video System, Game/Media Manager) to no avail, but I'll try it again here. I did just try a reinstall, might try to uninstall, restart everything then reinstall again. It's really weird, because after selecting a category, it just sits there on the gear, spinning rather fast. I'll also check with the ROM dev as well just to make sure it isn't something on that front.

Excellent! Thank you
I have an issue in with support, but just wanted to chime in here. I am also having an issue setting up remotes. I can install the app, pick a category and then a device. I can get so far as doing the first power button test, but when I try to tap "it works" it just shows me the gear animation as if it's doing something but doesn't progress past that. It happens with ANY remote I tried to add.
What I've done to troubleshoot - rebooted both devices, uninstalled, reinstalled, same result. On a rooted Galaxy Note 3 with Hyperdrive ROM build 8 (4.4.2), Gear 2 Neo is stock, unrooted.
Ultimately, what I want out of this is something that can control my receiver power, input switching and volume, as well as my projector on/off on one remote panel - so I'd love a remote that can combine functions from different devices. I'd be fine with paying for an app with that functionality.
Well now I feel dumb...
I wanted to give a status update. So I was still running into one heck of a brick wall getting the app to work properly on my Gear 2. I admit, it was rooted, but I didn't realize the firmware I was on (*NDB) was outdated. I just tried to connect to Kies to see if I could bring it back to stock firmware, and I find out I had an update to a new firmware (*NE5). Performed the update, and boom - app loads like it should, I can select a category, and I now see a list of devices! I figured it would be worth mentioning if any others are seeing this issue. Now that it works properly, I'll test it out on a few devices. If you don't hear from me soon, consider that good news!
Not sure if theres already a thread (dont think there is but I havent searched far)
Things I would like to see are:
Official Social Media Apps - Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter integration etc.
S Voice Improvement - Feel like it lacks a whopping amount, I literally feel like the only thing I can ask it to do is Call / Message someone or Open an app or request the weather (Which is on my homescreen anyway). Things that surprised me is that it can't play a song on the device on request, or open an application on the phone on request etc. I feel like it should run its responses through the official S Voice app on the phone if the request isn't a direct Gear command.
Lock security on wrist - Phone lock security on the wrist, I understand there is already the "Autolock" but some nice security features would possibly be a pin unlock that shows up on watch (or on phone if not connected) or a pattern unlock, gives more security options. Or even when clicking the option in notifications to "Open on phone" that it bypasses the lockscreen.
Remote Phone Viewer - Somewhat like teamviewer but where you can actually view your phones screen, scroll around and interact from your wrist, might be slow and tedious but would be a fun feature and extend its capabilities into the phone itself.
Unified Remote application for PC control - I always find Unified remote a good application for remote access to PC's it would be nice to see them develop an application for the wrist!
Android Wear Application integration, allowing tizen to run android wear apps, I feel if Samsung don't allow this, or don't speed up the process of passing applications their smart watches will be outran by watches such as the Moto 360.
Think thats all my ideas so far, would love to hear yours!

I want Google now and a MUCH better texting program. I want to be able to receive the test and reply to it in one step.

Yes, but you need to exit whichever notification you are in and go into Flesky. IMO, Flesky is slow, even with the latest update. Takes a few seconds to open and doesn't automatically refresh your feed. Very annoying that something better hasn't come out from Tizen yet. :crying:

Oh I definitely agree with that, what annoys me about default notification app is that it takes up a huge bit of scroll space repeatedly telling you that the button below opens on the phone even though the button itself says that. Should use that space to have an "Open in watch messenger" to reply!
General keyboard
More and more apps let you type in stuff. But every app has his own made keyboard.
So a keyboard implementation general for all apps!!
Then developers can make the perfect keyboard which you can choose.

Definitely agree, I don't mind typing on my watch it is manageable!
and we all know we're going to be doing it discreetly (while at work) so I could just carry a thin stylus if I ever needed to, might take something finding one, I was quite disappointed that non of the s pens worked.
"Unified Remote application for PC control "
I actually asked the developers of Unified Remote about making a Tizen port of their app - or at least something that could work in conjunction with the phone app. They said they'd look into it, but I'm not holding my breath.
We'll have more luck if the Color Tiger developers who make Smart IR lite come through with their new device that is being crowdfunded as we speak - as they said that device will be able to get commands from the watch somehow.

Hopefully they do develop a watch app it would be great and promote their app much more. I would even pay for it!
At the moment im using Wearable Widgets with a 4x4 simple unified remote widget but as I don't like wearable widgets limited options on clock faces and lack of time updates I have to flick between clock faces which is impractical!
Just thought of a new one, develop sleep application to toggle your phone into a sleepmode turn sync off etc location dim screen. Then once you wake up and toggle sleep off it turns them all on!
