AOSP (NOT Google) Apps/APKs - Where are they - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Salutes, I am using a D821 but I was wondering about the opposite of what most people want: where can I find genuine AOSP apps without compiling them? By this I mean AOSP Camera, SMS etc. I want that genuine aosp code, not google play store variants.
I've been looking for them (especially Browser and Camera) but I only found SMS (the green vanilla marshmallow one) in a remote thread for a oneplus.
Do you know any sources to find them WITHOUT compiling them? (I don't care what if flashable or apk-installable or release, just to be 5.0+ so they have material design)

It's a rather loaded question you're asking....
Google has abandoned many (probably all) of the AOSP apps; they haven't been updated for years, and Google has changed many APIs in that intervening time. Many of those apps don't work correctly, or have random crashes, or certain functions won't work without an FC. Every release or update breaks more of these old apps, and the situation will only continue to get worse. Your only hope of getting a working version of these apps is to find a developer who picked-up the torch and has the app on the Play Store or F-Droid.
I appreciate that you'd like to keep these old apps alive, but the best way to keep them going is supporting the open source authors who have devoted much time and effort into fixing and modernizing these apps. They are fixing bugs, and your using the app and giving feedback will keep things running longer. If you don't like the Play Store, APKs for all can be downloaded from F-Droid.
You can always pull what's still working from my N5 ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/rom-almostvanillaaosp-t3477224
The following apps are in my ROM:
Calculator
Camera2
Contacts
Desktop Clock
Dialer
Gallery
Music
Keyboard
Launcher3
Messaging
PicoTTS
QuickSearchBox
In post #1 of my thread I have a link to suggested FOSS apps that serve as excellent replacements. I'll give a quick rundown:
AOSP Calculator -> Works. I like MathDroid
AOSP Calendar -> Broken. Use Etar (based-on AOSP Calendar)
AOSP DesktopClock -> Has some broken parts (try clicking on the globe). Clock+ has everything but the widget.
AOSP Dialer -> Works
AOSP Email -> Broken. Use K9 Mail
AOSP Music -> Broken under Nougat, limited features otherwise. Use VLC or Vanilla Music
AOSP Browser/Browser2 -> Broken. Use Lightning Browser, Chromium, or Firefox
AOSP Camera2 -> Works (I prefer Open Camera, as it's modern with newer features)
AOSP Contacts -> Works
AOSP Gallery -> Works. Simple Gallery is based-on the AOSP code, and it's very current.
AOSP Keyboard -> Has some broken parts (mainly trying to activate swipe). I prefer AnySoft Keyboard
AOSP Launcher3 -> Works
AOSP Messaging -> Works. QK SMS is a fine update based-on the AOSP code
AOSP PicoTts -> Works
AOSP QuickSearchBox -> Sorta works, but I find a shortcut on my Launcher screen more reliable.
AOSP Exchange2 -> Broken with AOSP Email. Again, K9 Mail
EDIT: The developer at this link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=9070296388022589266
is doing exactly what you're talking about; he's reviving the old AOSP apps. Here's his list of updated AOSP apps:
Calendar, Music Player, Camera, Calculator
All are available via F-Droid as well.

[Request] - Stock 3D Gallery and DeskClock

So I will try to organize this thread so most important stuff (request) is on top, and my rant/explanation of why I want this done will follow. Warning: I know I tend to use a lot of run-on sentences...I'm just long winded
Attached are two stock (I presume) .apk's that I pulled out of Cyanogen's ROM that I have installed on my stock 2.1 ROM. I prefer these two apps vs. the HTC versions, but each have one small issue.
1) - DeskClock.apk will FC if you hit the Music shortcut. I am assuming that this is something simple, like it's trying to call up the wrong program? Can this be written to launch the HTC Music App, hopefully eliminating the FC?
2) - Gallery3D will FC if you try to launch the camera from within the app. I am once again assuming (more hoping, really) that it's trying to launch a camera app that doesn't exist in the stock ROM. Can this be written to launch the HTC Camera app, hopefully eliminating the FC?
I would try myself, but after downloading and installing Eclipse, JRE and the Android plug-in, I still feel like this is over my head at this point, as all I have is very limited Visual Basic experience. Would someone mind doing me a favor and updating those apps are reposting them in this thread so that myself and other like me can use those on our stock 2.1 ROMs? It would be much appreciated
Now for the rant:
I see a lot of people with differing opinions on HTC's Sense. Personally, this is my first Android phone, and I have found that I actually like SOME of the Sense apps. I dont really have a problem with the launcher (though I have replaeced it with ADW.Launcher), and I feel that apps such as People, Camera, and Phone are somewhat superior to what I presume are the stock Contacts, Camera and Phone apps, respectively. And then I wonder why HTC created some of the other apps they did that seem somewhat....lacking.
1) The "Photos" app is very boring and plain. I mean, I appreciate the Flickr and Facebook integration (which would be useful IF I used them), but why could they not have just added this functionality to the already awesome 3D Gallery? I would rather use the stock Gallery app, and even though the file I attached (see:Gallery3D.apk) doesn't have a functioning camera botton, I still prefer it to the Photo app. Plus, it pulls in my Picasa photo albums
2) The DeskClock app HTC included on the incredible is fine for the most part, but I don't like the small clock font and the fact that it takes FOREVER to launch, whereas the stock DeskClock.apk is instant to load, has a much larger font, and does other things I like better; like keeping my wallpaper visible, and is softer to the eye. Once again, I appreciate the added features of HTC's clock (Worldclock, Stopwatch, Timer), but I don't use them enough to make me like this program more than the stock one.
So that is why I am asking for those to be edited so they'll run on my stock ROM. At least until we start seeing some FroYo love
Also, if anybody knows, why did HTC replace the Messages app with one that exchanges the ability to set conversation limits (e.g. 200 messages, then auto delete) with one that uses Facebook for contact icons? I still use the HTC Messages app cause I like the pictures transferring over from Facebook (or the People app, which is updated by Facebook, and hence why the People app I like BETTER than stock), but why leave out any message bulk control? Anything over two or three hundred and my phone really starts taking a long time to open the conversation...
Alternately, once CyanogenMod's ROM becomes more stable, I would love to switch to it if I could bring some of the Sense apps along. Those would be:
1) People - with fully functioning updates and photo shortcuts to Facebook and Flickr
2) Camera - I like the added features...and the fact that it already supports 8MP, whereas (as of CM5.0.8 Test1, anyway), the camera app would only do 3MP
3) Phone - again, with correctly synchronizing contact pictures and speed dial, just like in our stock ROM.
I haven't actually tried pulling these out of the stock ROM and installing them in CM5, but I'm assuming I'd run into issues with the Facebook/Flickr sync...

attached is a gallery apk that doesn't have the camera issue. and also I attached the stock music apk that is need for deskclock.
Anything from Sense requires the htc framework which you are not going to find in any Cyanogen or vanilla ROM and there is no work around.
The vanilla DeskClock apk (with working music button) and 3D Gallery (with working camera button) already exist in other threads in this forum. Just search for them. You will also find both of those apps in any plain vanilla or cyanogen rom that is made.
As for the phone and contacts, the vanilla ones are much better imo than sense. You will not miss the lag.

Thanks jitajt! Those fixed my problems. Im getting to the point where I'm fairly satisfied with everything about the phone. Just got Hydra's OCUV+N kernel installed and it's working great.
I have the opposite request of this thread actually; I need the HTC DeskClock files from a stock 2.1 sense ROM. Would anyone be able to post it please? Thank you in advance!
I miss having the timer and stop watch functionality that comes with it. My laundry always winds up sitting in the washer and dryer far too long without me setting a timer
Hello. I did a search for AOSP DeskClock and this is the only promising thread I found. I'm using an HTC CDMA Hero. Does anyone know if this is or isn't safe for me to use?
Also, do I just push to /system/app?
I don't know about you guys.. but the sense gallery loads up MUCH FASTER than this gallery 3D. UNINSTALLED
I have both apps in my rom and are runing fine

Camera FC
Hey Thanks jitajt!
I've been trying to get this to work on my samsung spica for a few days now.
But now the camera button (upper right) is giving me an FC error. It's because the camer app I have is SamsungCamera.apk NOT the stock camera app.
Could you provide the stock camera.apk for android 2.1?
Thanks.

5 predictions for Android 5.0 ‘Key Lime Pie’ features

Found this article that talks about Android 5.0 features. I personally think social integration hub and personalized settings won't happen. Android doesn't need a social hub and Google doesn't really care about providing that. Personalized settings for allowing stock android sounds great but I don't know if the hardware manufacturers will allow that to happen.
Profile Management: BB10 has it, Android should offer it too.
Video Calling App: I think we actually need this
Text Message Sync: This would be very helpful, I use SMSBackup+, but native functionality would be nice.
Can`t wait for Google I/O 2013 in May!
Source
what do you guys think? Some of the features in this article are quite useful.
I hope the new OS isn't going to be a let down, I can't think of much there is for Google to implement
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
I don't think that Google will provide a "built-in social networking application". It just... doesn't fit.
The messaging, on the other hand, is highly possible. Not sure about the personalized settings, although I hope they'll implement that.
My prediction is that they'll break bluetooth worse than they already have. Or they'll break some other basic feature so bad that it becomes as unusable as bluetooth is in 4.2.1. Maybe it will be the sound this time, or wifi. Whatever they break in the new Android, you can rest assured they'll wait at least 3 months to fix it.
People still use bluetooth!? xD

Maybe there'll be some major (or minor) UI changes too? Just like with 2.0, 3.0 & 4.0.

Google Talk? G+ Hangouts?
What needs to happen:
- Unified messaging: messages, google talk, google+ messenger and it would be great if they also could integrate whatsapp / fb messenger. (but that's not going to happen)
I'd like to see better support for miracast. Also it would be great if they took an update to just do a ton of bug fixing and fine-tooning of various ui aspects and performance. For instance, the emoji keyboard is very inconvenient to use. Full integration into the default keyboard would be a very nice improvement. Also the blue text selecter thingy is very difficult to use, and hasn't recevied an update since froyo or even earlier. Tiny stuff like that can be really irritating when it goes unfixed for a long time. Also if you push the multitasking button while the keyboard is open, then switch back to the app you were just on, android will have a sort of frame stutter.
It's tiny stuff like this that iOS has a lot of time to get right, considering there aren't any real feature upgrades to it. Anybody notice how long it took for people to not give a crap about siri?
So yeah, I'd like to see a more refined os.

I agree, but it would be nice to have one standalone app that would be great at video chatting.
I don't seem them putting all the third party messengers together like whatsapp, but it would make sense if they combined messages and video chatting together.

This is a definate need..
Also I have the pie feature in JellyBomb which I like as well.
Here's my wishlist of Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) changes:
1. Change the toggles to work on a single press and settings for a long press
1.1. Add the ability for developers to add toggles to the toggle screen and a setting to select which toggles I see and re-order them.
2. Add multiple widgets to the lockscreen
3. Add ability to disable lockscreen left-right swipes
4. Add ability to remove unused home screens
5. Add phone number entry auto-search
6. Add phone app setting to always start on the dial pad
7. Let me uninstall apps that are not system apps by default without having to root. (Google+, Currents, Google Music, carrier apps, etc.) System apps *should* be just those required to run the base system, not those freely available in the Google Play Store and just pre-loaded.
8. Add setting button to refresh media or handle media auto-refreshing better
9. Add a backup system without having to root
10. More overall configuration options ala CM or AOKP. Even if they're in the hidden Developer Options settings.
Not 5.0, specific, but Google Apps related:
1. Standardize the placement of search buttons in Google apps since they removed the search button
2. Standardize the placement of menu buttons in Google apps since they removed the menu button
3. Add a setting in Android Chrome to display a new tab when it's opened.
4. Add the ability to re-order bookmarks in Android Chrome
Support for bluetooth low energy would be welcome (Bluetooth 4.0 ble)
Nz
Android should give us the option to close processes that we don't need to be open to free RAM, and it should
be a system that allows the device to work in an efficient way with minimal internal storage usage occupied by the pre-installed
applications.

Android L Everything/Anything Thread

Well android L is looking really shmexy, I think this should be a general thread for discussion of L. To get us started I've got a few things.
1. Holo is dead, long live Quantum Paper/Material! I like it, it finally gets rid of holo dark and is highly improved over holo white. Conversion is going to be an absolute PAIN though with all our user apps. Mismatched interfaces everywhere.
2. Lots of features similar to those of custom ROMs, I think this is a very good thing and that in general the Google implementations are cleaner and nicer. Examples: Lockscreen notifications, hover like notifications (though a heads-up thing was in the kitkat source code)
3. Heavy unification of Google services and android, chrome tabs in recents, Google now is basically the notification system, pretty much every aosp system app has an improved play store counterpart. I think this is a good thing other than aosp ROM compiling issues, for example, w/o flashing PA stock Gapps we would have outdated/discontinued calender, sms, camera and email. Even after flashing pa stock Gapps we have the movie studio and news and weather apps that are old (and kinda gross in terms of ui) which aren't even on nexus devices. Also Gapps packages in general are still a legal gray area. I want unification of nexus and aosp in terms of continually developed elements and for deprecated services to be removed from aosp when they are removed from nexus firmware.
4. ANDROID E'ERYWEAR (get it, wear). I can't wait for this stuff personally.
5. The death of traditional oem theming. If oem s want to theme android, they need to change their philosophy. Take touchwiz for example, Samsung has an android wear watch coming out today, meaning google now, meaning transition away from s voice. They will likely have to have more design elements in common with stock in many more areas as well. Also it looks like chrome will pretty much be necessary for the best user experience, so no oem custom browsers. Samsung in general has tried to make replacement apps for just about every Google service and built their own framework, but the Google framework and app set is now being integrated to the OS.
6 and beyond! Your stuff!
Nice info
Samsung Knox will be natively built into Android L:
As I'm a new user, I cannot post a link. Please navigate to: youtube /watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wtLJPvx7-ys#t=8084

The mute button doesn't work and I think it will never, because nobody except of letv knows exactly how they implemented this and even if it would be quite hard to port because there is just no such button designated in pure android.
The rom uses a different camera app than stock, I don't even know from which device or rom it's ported but it supports most of the stuff the stock rom supports(or even more?). The stock camera app is not installable on aosp (yet).

Hey guys,
Unfortunately I found a bug. Something is causing a "PhoneWindowManager.mBroadcastWakeLock" which completely prevents the phone from going into deep sleep .
EDIT:I found the reason. This bug happens if you use the volume rocker(VOL+/VOL-) but ONLY when the screen is turned off. I also have good news, I know which file I have to edit. It will take some time to get used to the java source code because it contains thousands of lines. A temporarily fix would be to only allow to adjust volume when the screen is on.
To avoid that it drains your battery so much, please regularly check WakeLockDetector. If you reboot the phone the wakelock is gone.

I know, I was wondering about this wakelock before but I could not find the reason or if it is even related to the rom It also happens in the mdsteam rom for Note 2. I know how to fix it now but I don't have time anymore to compile and pack everything together. I think it's ready on Wednesday if everything goes well...
I like AOSP rom very much. It goes ok for me!
Congrats on the great development!
For me, slow-mo video and the "mute" switch were two important things when buying the phone, so I won't install your ROM right now.
I'm a bit confused by your original post - you talk about a stock camera app, but later you say it is not the original one by letv. So is it the original one with support for all the camera features or not? cheers
Any ideas for rooting?
Root is simply! You go into recovery. Then, you flash update-su.zip beta 2.49 over recovery.

Can anyone comment how is the wifi signal strenght?
Thank you guys for the praise
Version 1.0.3final is now ready. It fixes the wakelock bug and I've tested it over one day now and it seems to run pretty well, no more wakelocks at all, also no crashes. I decided to only make an ultralight Edition from now on, so everybody can combine the addons as he likes.
I will provide gps and wifi test shortly.

Great job!
Some notes:
/recovery-from-boot.p.bak - do we need it?
LED is white when charging, red is better
I wonder if IrDa port and remote control app work
tap on "Menu" shows APP_SWITCH instead MENU (/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl)
adb devices doesn't list the device even with USB debugging enabled. Actually, the same was in EUI, but I hoped it will work
can you extend the reboot menu?
PicoTts always is forced close! Phone numer of sms is divided into 2 parts, sent and received.

1. I don't think so, but is has only about 700kb, so I didn't really cared about it so far
2. Actually the LED is changing the color while loading regarding to the battery level
3. No it doesn't I will add this to the main post
4. I don't know what you exactly mean. Pressing the circle button shortly will enter the menu and long will enter recent apps. What I want to add is that a long press will enter the Google App. The generic file you posted is just about adding linux key codes to different names. The actual event which happens when you press a button usually is written down in java code.
5. I know. I also have trouble with adb and the letv. I think we have to blame mediatek.
6. Yes I will.

I fixed the picotts issue already, it will come in the next version
Regarding the sms app I can only repeat what I wrote in the other thread about he dialer app. I don't make these apps, they come from aosp/google, if there is something wrong blame them. The main idea behind my rom is to provide a most lightweight and pure android experience as possible. For example one guy uses nova, the other hola and some use apex. The same goes for sms or dialer. I don't want to load this rom full of unecessary stuff you'll never use, feel free to install what ever you like. I don't have this issue btw. The way how you saved your contacts(e.g. with or without country code) might be the problem. The Messenger is the most recent version from google -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging&hl=de

[Open Source][5.0+] Rootless Pixel Launcher 3.9.1 - Based on AOSP 8.1 Launcher3

Vision
My launcher is a close to AOSP launcher that only changes the necessary code to allow for small extensions and backporting to older Android versions. If you want a more feature packed launcher use Nova, Action or Lawnchair. I focus on simplicity and rock solid stability. If you do not agree with that and would rather have experimental features, you are in the wrong thread.

Nice!
Just tried this on my OnePlus 3 and I can confirm that it works amazingly fast! Thanks for all the hard work. Cheers!

I am having issues installing this on a Nexus 6P with the latest Android O developer preview installed. Installation progress bar freezes at about the 90% mark and the installation fails. Has anyone been able to successfully install this on a device running the O developer preview?

Ended up wiping and starting fresh with the O developer preview. After doing so, Launcher3 installed without issue. Is there any way to get the Pixel icons working with this? I downloaded the Pixel icons for 7.1.2 from apk mirror, but it doesn't seem to have taken. Thanks.
Working great on LG Aristo, Suggestion: icon pack support.
Please either add pixel icons or icon pack support. Would make this the best launcher ever!!!
Its like dream come true for me... using it on my Galaxy S8... But I have two requests and an issue:
1. could your please support pixel exclusive automatic round icons for supported apps... it is possible as Action Launcher 3 has this feature with Round Icon Option on non rooted phone.
2. Is it possible to overwrite app closing animation like stock android (slide down). this feature is available in Nova Launcher through "Reveal App Animation". I don't like the default zoom out closing app animation of my Galaxy S8.
3. Check the screenshot: the Navigation bar color is muted .. not white .. gray color.. this is related to Poor Samsung design... Nova launcher has fixed the issue... But each and every other 3rd party launcher has same problem.. kindly look into the matter..! Thanks..

Thank you.... Much appreciated work...
Thanks for share.. keep the good work continues..
Thank you for ur work but thanks even more for making a thread here on XDA!
Fix status bar
https://github.com/amirzaidi/Launcher3/releases/tag/Pixel-v1.3
- Possibly fixed Samsung's Secure Folder and MIUI from causing crashes
- Updated the requested Google Now overlay version from v0 to v5, like the O Pixel Launcher
- (EXTREMELY EXPERIMENTAL) added an entire library of obfuscated code to get the app shortcut row working
- Added a toggle for the app shortcuts, so you can disable them if they do not work properly
- Force the Pixel colours throughout the app, including the widgets and preferences
There is also a version without the entire app suggestions library in it, if it causes any problems you should try that one.
Anyway to get round icons without needing to change systemui or have root access ?
:good: Lawnchair is amazing!!! Thank you very much!

Google crashes? Oh man, that's a new thing I've never heard before. Only way I can get that to happen is in an emulator with a broken Google app variant. Is your G App up to date?
Hey, thanks a lot for your launcher, looks dope !
Just to let you know it has been featured on the biggest French - Android website today, so your Github might receive a bit more traffic
On a side note : I've tried it on my Galaxy S8, and I was not able to get the weather to show, irregardless of the number of time I've pulled down the cards to refresh google feed.
Do you happen to have an idea on how I could fix it ?
Also on a side-side note, would you implement icon support into it ? As with samsung ROMs we have the ugly looking icons instead of rounded/pixel ones.
