[HELP] Using custom icons with TouchWiz - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Themes, Apps, and Mods

I've been a devout Nova Launcher user for 7+ years, but I have been trying to turn my S7E into a faux S8/N8 lately, and am actually really liking the TouchWiz experience — i really like a lot of the stock widgets and icons, so it feels good to keep it "lite" rather than having 7 or 8 different ZooperWidgets to replicate stock ones.
My one gripe is that only system apps come with well-designed icons. I'm currently using a custom theme from the theme store, but this only adds an addition 5 or so icons. I've tried using Icon Changer to create custom icons on the home screen, but they all have a grey border surrounding them. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to either A) implement icon packs from the Play Store into a TouchWiz-ready theme, or B) knows of an icon switching app that won't result in shortcuts having a grey border
TL;DR Is it possible to create app shortcuts on the home screen of TouchWiz using custom icons without a grey border? I don't want to use a custom launcher and I don't have root (although I am happy to root if it will allow for this).

You can use the icon changer free app. With this application you can make custom icons and you can use icon packs

Finally figured it out - had to revert to stock theme for Touchwiz, clear data and cache, turn icon frames off (it was greyed out with no option to switch them off), then go back to the theme I was using. Thanks everyone for your input!

if u have root then try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.xperiacle.touchwiz.themer&hl=en

Have done this already
Still can't get icons to switch though... (I want to use the Google Messages app but have the Samsung app icon and notification badges...seems impossible!)

[Q] customizations

I've done my research can't find the answer. I like how you can use custom icons with launcher pro. I like the text look for icons. I dont like the launcher pro setup. I like how the original 7 screens are set up with 2.2 ota. Using launcher pro you can't get the widgets like on the original screens. I have each page set up the way i like and have found no way to do it using lp.
I would like to know if there is a way to replace the icons with the text in the original 2.2 ota. Is there an icon changer program that allows this?
How do you make custom icons?
All help appreciated. Thanks, Eric
I've used ADW and launcher pro both and they both have a custom shortcut option. I used it to change my messaging icon recently.

The best quick and easy way is adw, better home, LP etc. other than that. Pull every apk from your phone and edit its icon and push back.

I use the custom short cut option works great for my needs.
Its much easier to use something like LauncherPro. Its a great app and is completely customizable.
If you go with the LauncherPro method... check out the customizations and icons and what not here

[Q] Change icons?

Hello all,
New Galaxy S2 user here. Coming from a line of exclusively HTC Sense phones and ROMs.
I'm wondering if it's possible (and easy) to change the icons for default apps in CM9 or TW based ROMs? Specifically the "Messaging" icon - I hate the "smiley" face. Makes me feel 12 years old again.
I've done a few searches, but I'm not looking to replace the entire icon set or the ROM or theme... just one icon.

Are you talking about the app mms icon or the emoticon pack from what sound like it's the mms icon

The hard way is to download the apk, open it up, replace the images with the ones you want, repackage it, and reinstall it. The easy way is to use a launcher that allows you to change the icon. I know Apex and Nova do, not sure about any others.

Also check out "Desktop Visualizer" in the market .
But as already mentioned ....the different launchers are the best & easiest way.
Holo launcher is another one.
Good Luck.

Go Launcher as well. Go, Nova, and Apex have the ability to use icon sets made for each other.
Hmmm... going to an entirely different launcher seems like overkill, but I guess if it works...
There used to be apps on the Market that would allow you to create shortcuts with different icons (BetterCut comes to mind, but the dev pulled it from the Market entirely).
If you don't want a new launcher, try Desktop Visualizer (though I have yet to figure out how to get it to use an existing icon pack). There are a lot of options in it and it's a great program.

Do you still use the stock Google launcher?

Hey guys,
What launcher do you use on your N5?
Still on stock? or replaced it with a 3rd party one?
I'm still on stock (google now launcher) though I'm considering a switch to a 3rd party one (Nova!).
I like the stock launcher but I miss some customization features like changing the icon packs, more than 4 icons in a row etc etc.
What about you guys?
I've been using lucid launcher pro for a while now. Really like the uniqueness of it. Also this thread may get locked or moved. Not sure if the mods will think this pertains directly to the device or not.

I don't have a nexus 5, but I still use the GNL on my N4 & 7 2013. Google Now is so much more useful for me, and my second choice is the Sony Xperia Z2 launcher

I've tried various launchers but like stated above the stock launcher is just so much more useful for me so I end up going back to it.

I use Aviate Launcher and I absolutely love it. Used to use Nova but I'm just tired of the usual home page/app drawer thing. Aviate is really different, clean, useful, intuitive and customizable
In 4 years on android, I never liked stock launchers
.
Until GEL .

Well, not sure if you're rooted. If you are, you can find these two features to use easily with the stock launcher like myself. If you use Xposed Framework, Gravity Box allows you to set the icon grid to whatever I want (right now I'm using 5x5). For icon packs, I'm using Unicon (bought from the Play Store you use it with Xposed Framework). It works great. The only gripe I have, which isn't a huge deal for me, is that it doesn't allow you to change individual icons like a 3rd party launcher would (or at least I assume it would being that I've never used a 3rd party launcher). I like the stock Google Now Launcher too much to switch.
I use the stock android launcher (like on nexus 7 and 4)... I need to be able to scroll both ways from the main home screen, plus, I can just swipe up if I need Google now.

I'm using Apex Pro launcher. I bought it back when I had my S2 and still like it's flexibility.

Smart launcher. Gel is boring and like most the others.

Yup, stock launcher and don't plan on changing it. Clean, simple, and straightforward.
Stock launcher for me. Never really liked any custom launcher.

I wish I could run the stock launcher, but I absolutely NEED Nova on my devices.
I enjoyed stock for a time, but have since moved back to Nova...so many options! I also realized that the stock launcher has the Search app running super secretly in the background all the time, even with Okay Google and Google Now turned off; I only found out with Greenify. Once I switched to Nova, I hibernated Search and it actually saves me enough juice to notice. I wonder if anyone else noticed this?
I use Stock Launcher but occasionally switch back to Nova Launcher, mostly when I've got tons of apps to organize. I do wish that in future updates the stock launcher offers more options to organize apps efficiently.

I was using the stock launcher with the GEL Settings xposed module for a while, but I recently switched to Action Launcher and LOVE it.
I was always using very few home screens and found myself not using Google Now from the home screen that often. Enough that swiping up from the home button wouldn't be a real inconvenience.
Action Launcher is exactly what I needed and I'm glad I finally tried it.

Played around, always go back to stock.
Been an avid user of nova until GEL. Still staying with stock Google now launcher to date

Nova on both of my devices N5&10. Tried stock's 4.4.2 launcher but I missed Nova's various features too much. Besides I rarely use Google Now despite several attempts due to pier pressure. So the latest launcher's preeminent feature was not a big draw.

Yup, Nova (Prime) for me too, i just love the ability to customise a launcher and use different icon packs.

using a different launcher yay or nay?

i just ordered an f1
has anyone used a different launcher on it? ive heard it mentioned in reviews but nothing definite
I use smart launcher pro and works well. Only issue is sometimes after a reboot the colour OS launcher kicks in as default.

Make sure you go into app management and default apps and select your preffered launcher as default. IMO, it's actually a better way to do it than other phones where you just start the launcher and wait for the OS to ask which one is to be default.
I also use Smart Launcher Pro on both my phones, and my wife's. I regularly try different launchers but always come back to SL Pro. It's elegantly simple but hiding some pretty good customisation tweaks and that app drawer is the best I've ever seen.

I installed Ubuntu theme as that is how to get the nicer icons in the app drawer tabs.

In my Find 7 I also have the MIUI Icon pack applied to homescreen and app grid.

For a nice clock I have Digital Clock Widget Xperia.

Set a nice wallpaper (I have a bright Lollipop one).
The phone looks stylish and well integrated with theming, like it came that way from Oppo.
If you must use the ColorOS launcher, you can install an app drawer app from Google Play instead of having to sort through pages of homescreens with a bunch of icons and folders.
I have this one in my oppo Find 7 for the rare times when I use the ColorOS launcher.

Simple, small and has barebones permission needs.

Nova Launcher import fail question

So I was trying to import my TouchWiz Home settings to Nova, and while it seems to work, a ton of my icons get replaced with the android head icon. Wondering if anyone with an S8/+ has had this issue or has had success with importing TouchWiz home data with icons intact? I want to start using Nova, but I don't really want to have to rebuild my folders if I can avoid it.
If you're speaking about Samsung proprietary widgets, very often these can be used only on Touchwiz.
No, I'm speaking of the icons themselves - numerous apps lose their icons and turn into the Android head logo, but some don't. That's what I'm referring to - doesn't matter if it's on the homescreen in or in a folder, but it happens either way for many of them.

Correct, this way can work on widgets, but on Nova launcher the apps icons should always show.
I suspect the OP mistakes the widgets for apps.
I tried nova from scratch since it's never wise to import settings from an older phone+os. Then I didn't feel like setting things up again and decided to try samsung touchwiz first. Uninstalled nova and lost the paralax scrolling. Have an iphone for work so I can appreciate this option from samsung. Reinstalled nova and it was back.
Long story short, I flashed an older firmware to my phone and have everything working again. Without nova launcher.
This happens if you have custom icons from Samsung Themes. Just long press on the Android icon to change them back to stock icons or something else if you have downloaded icon packs

I haven't tried, but I imagine if you switch back to stock icons in the Touchwiz launcher and then do the import in Nova, all of your icons should show
