Google Play Services Oreo battery drain - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Anyone have a fix for this? Since updating to Oreo, Google Play Services has been killing my battery in the background. Also, it keeps randomly "not responding".
I've gone so far as to try a factory data reset and then set up as a new device.

[Q] Uninstalled apps keep reinstalling (backup/restore issue?)

Received my Nexus 5 this morning and loving it so far; however, there is one annoying issue: It seem to insist on installing all apps I've ever installed across all android devices I've ever owned. Each time I delete an app that I no longer want, it then reinstalls it again.
Do I need to just wait till it installs everything, and then delete ones I don't want or is there a better way? I figured I could just delete from the my apps list in the play store, but I'm concerned I would lose paid apps that I want for a different device, but not this one.
I had the same problem. I stopped a few apps from being installed when it was restoring the device and it reinstalled them again. I just uninstalled them and it was fine.

Try uninstalling the app from the uninstall button in the play store

happened to me too, and i waited until they were all done installing to uninstall. i **think** it may have had something to do with a play store update, but i failed to check the version number of it early on to know if such an update even happened. I just waited a while, then rebooted, then uninstalled. it seems to have stopped.
Was there ever a solution found to this? Thinking it's a backup setting issue, and it's driving me nuts.
Bump.
Please. Help.
Has no one been able to fix it? It's driving me insane. Every time I flash a ROM the stupid play store brings back phantom apps that I've removed from "My Apps" several times. I do want the apps I actually use to automatically re-install, but for some reason, some apps that I've uninstalled and removed from "My Apps" keep reappearing somehow. I've searched everywhere for a solution to permanently removing them, but I can't find it. This was happening on my S3 and has continued to happen when I moved to the Nexus 5 as well.
Just stop auto download in Play and reinstall apps with Helium or TB. Untick restore apps after you types in tour Gmail user andere password when setting up the phone.

I'm more trying to fix the actual issue here, not just avoid it.
I called Google and the rep told me they do not have a known solution currently, but she will escalate it because she has actually had the same problem. They'll keep me updated, so if I get a solution, I'll be sure to post it.
how about re-install whole machine >"< root again...
Solved!
Was having the exact same problem, here's what I did on my Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100.
1. Reset the phone
2. Skip logging in with your Google Account
3. Settings>Accounts>Backup and Reset>Untick the Automatic Restore checkbox
4. Log in to the Google Account
5. Problem solved, no more automatic reinstalling apps.
Alternative - Resetting your backup account and unticking the automatic restore checkbox before you login to your Google Account should work similarly, but I haven't tried that.
I'm guessing it should work with all other devices too. Hope it helps a few friends

[Q] Host of issues with connectivity

So, this one is pretty difficult to describe, because of the host of issues that are seeming to plague me right now. To start, my issues began when I got home one day and realized that my play store wasn't working. I'm getting a "No Connection" error when I try to open it, and retrying merits nothing. It wasn't long before I realized the issues I was having weren't just with the play store - I couldn't get to my email, and I noticed that play music keeps trying, and quickly failing, to download songs.
Probably the most mind-boggling part of the issue is web browsing. Sometimes I'll simply get an error saying it can't connect, and sometimes it'll connect and show the site in an odd way: http://i.imgur.com/06PY7yJ.jpg
I've tried a fair few things, but it's hard to know where to start with all the different issues:
Reflashing(CM11)
Confirming the date and time were set correctly
Factory reset
Clearing cache for involved apps
Resetting modem and router
Resetting dalvik cache
If any more info is needed, I'd be glad to give it. I've got no idea how all of these issues are connected, or how to even begin to fix them.
Interestingly, I was able to access the play store for a few minutes earlier today, but I couldn't load any of the sections of the store or download anything. This is incredibly irritating.
You could try Odin flashing 4.1.2 VRBMF1, root/unlock, then see what happens after that.
Did you recently restore your imei? I had a similar issue and drove me crazy for a couple weeks.

[Q] [Help] Exchange not working on Android 5.0 / GMail

Hello everyone
I'm unable to make Exchange work on a Nexus 5 from my colleague, it basically doesn't matter what i enter, i always get a connection failure.
Using my LG G3, i do not have any problems with it, is this a known issue? I know it was on Android 4.4.4, however we've hoped it would be fixed in Lollipop.
Thanks for your help!

I got it to work on 5.0 (even had it working on 4.4+) Try using CloudMagic to set it up. That is what I was using on the Developer Previews for my work emails (as the Exchange APK was absent). If you can't get it to work on CloudMagic; it has to be a mistyped username, password, or email.
I know it throws me off when Gmail copies the email address into the username field, as my setup requires a different username than my email.

Here the same.
Exchange connect fine. I see this on the server. Sync works fine to.
But it does not appear in Gmail or Calendar!
If I manually sync my calendar in the app then i can see the entries after 20 seconds for one second. And poff only the Gmail entries are available again.
I reset the phone, Install all new. Clear the cache form the apps... Nothings help. I think is a bug.
Working now, deleted the App Cache and added the Exchange account via Settings, make sure to enter your settings manually, should work this way (atleast it did for me)

Exactly the same for me. Everything was working fine on 4.4.4 until I installed the factory image. Mails and calendar entries visible for a blink of an eye. Then nothing. I'ts so frustrating.
I have seen many pepole with this issue. It must be some kind of bug in Lollipop.

The connection is not a problem for me. It connects and syncs without any error. But the inbox just loads forever and in the calendar only Gmail entries is visible.

Yeah, but since this is such an essential function for many people you would assume that it has been tested properly.

Downloads in play store pending

Got an unlocked pixel 2 xl from Google running on Sprint, for some reason nothing from the play store downloads. I've deleted the Google account, and signed in again, and with multiple accounts, cleared cache and data and rolled back updates for the play store, and I've switched data connections, different WiFi at different people's houses. I restart the phone randomly with apps pending download and out of nowhere one will download, then it stops and the rest are still pending. What the hell could this be?
Dude I have the same problem!
Clear cache and data didn't work. restarting the phone didn't work. Toggling wifi didn't work. Uninstall update from Play Store didn't work!
After doing all that **** it became even worse.
What a **** phone
I've had this issue with lots of phones/roms. I even contacted support about it when I got my Pixel 2.
Support was worthless.
My issue seemed to stem from my having multiple google accounts. When i factory reset I opted not to put in my password for my 2nd google account, then everything synced and downloaded fine. Once all that was done I manually added my 2nd google account and it worked as normal.
I'm having the same issue.
I've been trying to download a 16mb app for the last 4hrs. Just says downloading...
Pixel 2 XL. 8.1 Oreo. It's so frustrating. The only thing that has worked for me temporarily. Is a factory reset. N days after it's back to square one... I also tried google support. They just piss me off, they all just sound like broken records.
I don't have a clue what to do. N I'm not factory resetting again. They need to fix this.

I have a better solution now than factory reset. Just go into "settings"/"apps & notifications"/"show all apps"/ and then on the right side top "reset apps settings".
But it will only fix it for a while and then this ****ty bug comes back again. I don't know if it's only with Pixel 2 since this is my first android phone, but this isn't what I expected when I came from iphone to Android.

reset App preferences in settings. It's only a temporary solution because the bug will come back again somehow.
I had the same issue, and phone support told me to do a hard reset, shame as it was brand new out of box and a hard reset was needed
This is happening to me as well... I factory reset a few days ago, it was working fine. But now the problem came back again... However, at night when it was on standby, it seem to have updated the apps. But when I try to download anything manually, it will just be stuck on download. I don't wanna factory reset again... Hope there will be a solution soon...
Happening to me too now. Brand New Pixel 2. Any solutions out there?
I had this happen when I first tried setting up my new pixel 2. I restored from an online backup. None of my apps would download. They would just sit there in Pending forever and not download.
I reset the phone and this time, set up as new. Then I tried to download app. Still got stuck in pending.
So I reset AGAIN. And set up as new again, but this time I did the "Trick" to install all those google apps that they recommend (in the setup) and this seemed to work. I could now go into the play store and everything downloaded and I have had no problems since.
Having this issue on my pixel 2 xl. I'll restore a TWRP backup and that sometimes fixes it, but it always comes back. It's wasted so much of my time already. Never had the issue on Pixel XL with nougat. Is there any known fix? (I've tried everything in this thread, nothing worked).
It's not a phone issue, it's not technically a Play Store "issue" - there appears to be a limit to about 2 simultaneous downloads from the Play Store, so if 2 apps are updating and you try to install something, it will stay on "pending" until what you want gets to the head of the queue. (Try not updating for a few weeks, then turn updating on and watch the phone update for hours and hours.) Evidently, Google doesn't want us crashing their servers by trying to download 30 apps at once. I wonder why. (I know why, I was being facetious.) Just keep your eye on the charge (according to all I've been reading recently, 80% is about the most we should charge lithiums to for longest life) and plug the charger in if it gets much below 40%. (And unplug it if it gets to 81%.) Eventually everything will download. (If there's enough, you may want to turn the phone off and go to sleep and continue the next morning. But this is the way it's going to be until someone buys Google a few hundred more servers.)

Android Auto Voice Icon crashing

Just thought I'd throw this out there. It took me about 4 days to figure out and resolve this and couldn't figure it out. Here's what I'm running
Phone: Pixel 2
Build number: OPM1.171019.019
Magisk: v16.0
TWRP: 3.2.1-0
Android Auto: 3.0.5705
Whenever I would open AA, AA worked fine with exception to the 'Microphone' option. I validated all permissions were properly set and that I allowed AA to use voice as well as enabling 'Ok Google' but it still continued to crash with the message "Voice Commands Aren't Working Yet" . I happened to be looking for crash logs and looked at the 'tombstone' files in '/data/tombstones/' and found the following line:
Code:
/dev/ashmem/dalvik-classes.dex extracted in memory from /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-myLQ80LPFOqvrolYhMKlDA==/base.apk (deleted)
I wiped Dalvik/ART Cache although I didn't think this would fix it... I don't know if this had to do with that crash since there wasn't a timestamp or reference to AA but thought it was peculiar. It looks like the 'google quicksearch box' is part of the 'Google' app in Google Play. I uninstalled the 'Google' app, then re-installed (updated) it. Then opened it and went through the 3 quick steps to set it up. After doing so, I opened AA and the issue was fixed...
I hope this helps someone.
Did the issue stay fixed for you? I did the same thing (uninstalled, then reinstalled Google app updates) but the issue returned within 20 mins or so. What's extra weird is that two of my devices (Pixel XL and Nexus 6P) with the same Google account are having the same problem in the last few days, but a friend's device (Pixel XL) doesn't when used with the same radio.
Well I just checked after reading your response and something reverted/no longer working. I know it did work for a while because I played with it and used Google Assistant in AA but now it's crashing again like you've said... I guess it's not worth keeping with this process for it to only work for a few minutes... I'll have to continue looking...
I've had the versions (that I put in my first post) working together for a few weeks (with exception to AA 3.0.5705) now but I swear this issue of AA not properly working has only recently cropped up this week in the 3.0 version -- which I think has only been out for a week.
I tried rolling back to AA 2.9.XXXX and it's still not properly working so I don't have a plan at this point.
I may be speaking too early @MaSt3rGrIfF01 but it's been working 5 hours and has survived several test shutdown/reboots without AA flaking. Here's what I did on this round:
-Uninstalled Android Auto
-Removed all Magisk Modules (only left Tethering Enabler)
-Android O APT-X Libraries
-Busybox
-RAM Management
-Sysconfig Patcher
-Systemless TZData -Rebooted Phone
-Went to 'Google' app settings, performing 'Clear All Data' and 'Clear Cache'
-Uninstalled 'Google' app
-Re-installed 'Google' app
-Configured 'Google' app
-Updated 'Google' app
-Sideloaded 'Android Auto' APK version 2.9.5749
-Rebooted Phone
.... Since then, I haven't experienced a crash
...and by 7PM last night, while not touching the phone at all since my last update here, I picked it up to check and it was busted again... Back at square one.
That's been my same experience so far; Erasing all data in the Google app will immediately resolve the issue, only for it to return soon after without me changing anything. Another thing I've noticed is that once the issue rerurns, I will periodically notice alerts saying the Google app has become unresponsive or suddenly closed.
I also tried wiping my Pixel XL and used a different Google account on it. I was unable to get the issue to reproduce on the same device when using this second Google Account. At this point, it seems like there's an issue somewhere in my Google Account, rather than in the device itself. So far I'm stumped, to say the least.
That's strange that a Google account would be the result of that behavior. Nonetheless, I will give that a try. I have two Google accounts tied to my phone so I removed one and re-did my previous steps. I will give it a few hours (hopefully days) before I confirm if this might be the solve.
One thing I noticed is that immediately after wiping my phone and updating the Google app, if I look in the settings for Google Assistant I'll see that it's missing options for music (and a few other things that I don't remember right now). I cannot get the issue to reproduce in this state. If I either erase the data in the Google app or use the phone normally for a period of time (between 6 to 30 or so hours), the missing options will return. As soon as those options are back, the issue starts back up. After that, if I wipe the Google app again, it will work normally immediately but the issue will return within 20 mins or so. This issue just keeps getting stranger.
How's everything going for you so far with the other Google account?
Well I had a primary Google account that I've been using for like 8 years. Then I have another which I made this year. I had both tied to my phone. However, I removed the newer one from my phone -- all traces of it gone -- then repeated the steps from earlier.
AA worked for almost the whole day without that crashing issue. Then I started having it's normal trouble. I'm in the same place you are. We can't be the only other people experiencing this... It does make me feel slightly better that it's happening to you on a different model phone which tells me this isn't just a Pixel 2 issue.
.... but yea, still not solved on my end...
Agreed, it's really strange that I can't find anyone else online complaining about the same issues. I'll keep in touch in case I find out anything else useful.

After reading through that thread, it looks like the way to resolve the issue is by installing a new version of the Google App (7.22.24.21). I've never been prompted to update to it, but you can find the APK online https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-search/google-search-7-22-24-release/. So far so good, I'll let you know if the issue returns.
Nice find! And agreed. I just updated Google app via the apk and the issue wasn't happening again. Didn't even have to uninstall/reinstall/clear cache
