Hello Xda,
I've a ZTE Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 build VDF-995NB02-IT10d Android 6.0.1. Kernel 3.10.49.
Since when I upgraded to actual version of Android, I have a very irritating problem:
the smartphone has the APP "RADIO FM" that activates the FM radio chip inside the device, allowing to listen to the "traditional" FM radio (thus NO streaming!!!).
I used to start the app (RADIO FM), select a radio station, activate the Bluetooth (BT) on the smartphone, and I was able to connect to my wireless BT earphone (Jabra Pulse). Perfect ! Hours of music and information freely walking and running without any hanging wire....
Now, since Android 6.0.1, when I activate the BT, the Audio music signal is no longer routed to the BT, so I cannot listen to the sound provided by the RADIO FM to the BT wireless earphone (Jabra Pulse). Why ?
I also tried to use an other BT wireless device (Plantronics M165 : a mono BT device ), but even with this device no audio is routed from RADIO FM app to the audio BT "channel".
However if I start any Streaming Music APP, and BT is active, I can perfectly ear the music/sound via any wireless BT device.
Is "RADIO FM" a native android app ? Can any one help me ?
I know it is a quite insignificant problem, however it save me money because I do not use Internet GBytes of streaming radios and I can listen to high quality Digital Radios.
I feel it is really a silly bug inside this small app or in BT code.
I spent hours and hours googling in internet, success less. I would really appreciate your help.
Many thanks in advance for the patience and great support.
Giuseppe.

Are you saying that you managed to get the FM radio working WITHOUT having a standard wired earpiece plugged in? If so, I would be amazed since this is what you see if you try it without!

Hi Colin,
thanks for your replay.
You are right, if I do not have the "wired" earphone plugged in I cannot listen to the RADIO FM. That's because the wire of earphone is also the antenna.
I would make few scenario so you may have more elements to evaluate.
Scenario 1 Normal Operation
I plug in the wired earphone, start RADIO FM and I can listen to the radio via earphone.
If I click on the "speaker" icon in the middle of the app I can then also listen to the radio via the smartphone loudspeaker. In this case the earphone is muted.
Scenario 2 Normal Operation
I plug in an "Antenna Tool" ( a wireless antenna developed by me to substitute the wired earphone ) and I can listen to the RADIO FM via the smartphone loudspeaker (because the wired earphone is not plugged in), of course ONLY if I push the "speaker" icon in the middle of the App.
Scenario 3 Normal Operation (BEFORE actual Android 6.0.1 )
I plug in the antenna (either the "wired earphone" or the "Antenna Tool" no matter which of two they are "just an antenna"), I start the RADIO FM, then I start BT from the smartphone, wear my Jabra Pulse BT wireless earphone and I start its BT, then the two BT devices automatically connect each other, then I can listen to the RADIO FM in the Jabra Pulse earphone.
Note that if, in place of the Jabra Pulse BT wireless device I use my Plantronics M165 a mono BT earphone device, I can listen to the RADIO FM, too.
Note that if I plugged in as antenna the wired earphone, the earphone is muted when I listen the RADIO FM via BT Wireless earphone.
That's wonderful: I can go running without any hanging wire, listening my favourite FM Radios and news, football sport events without going in streaming using INTERNET.
Scenario 4 The PROBLEM (With actual Android 6.0.1 release)
I perform exactly the same operations as above 3 Scenarios, but when I activate the BT in the smartphone AND any of two BT devices above (either Jabra Pulse or Plantronics M165) have paired, the RADIO FM audio disappears.
I cannot listen to the Radio FM neither from the wired earphone nor if I push the "speaker" icon in the middle of the app.
It seems, when BT is activated, that RADIO FM app doesn't route the audio output to the BT environment.
I am quite sure about that because if, in place of RADIO FM, I use any other sound app (e.g. Spotify) I can listen to the music via both BT wireless devices.
I hope I didn't bore you. I gave you some more detailed elements for your evaluations. Feel free to ask me any additional clarifications.
I thank you for your help,
Giuseppe.

Yes but since the outer screen of the earphone cable is the antenna, it has to be left plugged in or the radio will not receive a signal...

Then you have managed to perform a miracle! You'll need to define more exactly what you mean by "Antenna Tool" since "a wireless antenna", by definition, is an oxymoron!! No such thing!

I have a hard time believing that since there needs to be some sort of physical wire connected to that screen for the radio to work at all, however short it may be...

No, you didn't bore me at all... I suspect that this is a combination of limitations of the app and the updated bluetooth stack in Marshmallow and there's probably nothing you can do about it. If I use a conventional streaming radio app, I can either have the wired headset or the bt headset/speaker but crucially NOT both together and thereby hangs the key I think...
Hi Colin,
I do appreciated your time spent on this. I was thinking if there is an other FM RADIO app that I can install to see if it is really a combination of limitation of the "RADIO FM" app or a bug in my app only.
I just found a couple of "SPIRIT" apps, but they are for "root" devices. Mine is not. Moreover it is expensive to download them to just make a test.
Do you have evidence of any similar (stock) app that I can install and use in my device/installation ?
Have a great day. Giuseppe.

I've recently installed a Nokia CK-1W. Although my XDA II pairs with it, I have been unsuccessful in receiving/making calls via the car kit. Based on my reading of previous post this could have something to do with the Nokia kit possibly not having a 'headset' profile. Is there any way around this?
I've tested with the Ericsson HBC-30 and it works fine. If I cannot get the Nokia CK-1W to work then my installer has agreed to swap the HBC-30 unit. Those guys at Stratfield are great!
Any help with the Ck-1W is appreciated.
Not likely to be the Nokia - it's the PDA not having a handsfree profile.
You do know that if you have another headset paired with XDA, you need to delete that bond before pairing with the car kit, don't you?
There are other issues with the Nokia BT kit - the SE kit is better and the audio matches better, but you can still only pair with one device at a time on the XDA and have to delete any other headset before it will talk to the car kit. Stupid, but there you go.
Ya I did delete all other paired devices. Anyway, if Nokia wont work then I have the SE HBC-30. A pity though as the Nokia button is nicer looking and more discreet.
Finally got the Ericsson HBC-30 installed and it works great! Sound quality is good on both ends. No call drop outs on a 20 min call. Quick response. 100% successful partnership everytime I get in the car. The control unit is small and looks very nice.
Have not tried if the controls to activate Voice dialling is compatible with the XDA II though.
Highly recommended.

Sorry to hijack this thread but it seems to bo touching on a subject i am wondering about.
I have a 3 day old XDA2 that is paired to my company car handsfree kit (motorola) and works a treat. However i have just had a Sony erricsson one installed in my car and whilst it pairs ok it will not work for any calls.
Do i have to delete the Motorola pairing to be able to use the Sony? Can the XDA2 work with multiple car kits?
If i do delete one the other works fine (either kit ) but when the are both paired only one will work. Can it not just detect what vehicle it is in and switch to that kit?
Thanks for any help
Jonny
Jonny,
Based on what I've read I think the XDA II can only be paired to 1 headset device (incl handsfree car kit) at a time. Maybe this will change as we get new software upgrades....one can only hope.
mp3 over car speakers
@leburpor
Can you play mp3-Files via your xda2 over the Ericsson HBC-30 carkit so you can hear mp3 sound on your car speakers?
another thing:
does your xda2 simply automaticaly connect to the HBC-30 ?
(or is it necessary to connect manualy with clicking through menues on the xda2?)
thx
Quakeeye
quakeeye,
The HCB-30 uses it's own speakers. My installers could not connect it to the car speakers but that could be a MB issue. Nevertheless, I cannot play other sounds from the XDA II through the car kit.
Once you have paired your unit with the car kit, it connect automatically as soon as you turn the ignition key. Has worked flawlessly to date.
I should also note that I've loaded the FONIX Voice Central 2 to dial when driving. Works great!
leburpor,
Do you know if your h/free is installed with sony part hca-16?
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=gb&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp4_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp4_1&pid=8419
If so this might be one answer to my problems?
I belive its the wiring loom that utilises your car stereo by muting cd/radio sound allowing voice calls to be heard through your car speakers.
I am looking for a similar system for my xda2 but also want the satnav instuctions to take the same route.......
Tell you what.... its no wander that so many people drive with a phone in one hand if its this damn hard to go hands free proper. The headset option is ok but i like to listen to music in the car (in stereo)....

XDAII Bluetooth car kit

I think you will have to wait till someone comes up with a Handsfree profile software upgrade before it will work. I've read somewhere in this forum that there is a guy working on it. Keep an eye out for it.
Good luck!
I own a Nokia CK-1W carkit and it's been difficult to use with my Qtek.
For now i can only receive calls via carkit. Better then nothing at all (if you don't want to remove the carkit).
You must install the Pocket Bluetooth Tools http://www.angeltowns.com/town/bluetooth/
Install it and delete any paired device you have.
Pair up with the carkit and select HEADSET profile.
When the phone rings, bluetooth turns on automaticaly and pairs up with the carkit, then you press the Nokia button and talk.
It works for receiving calls throug loudspeaker only.
I've contacted the author of the Pocket Bluetooth Tools and he already knows the bug about the Nokia CK-1W making calls and should be fixed next release.
Heya Jose,
Have you tried any voice dialling software with your unit yet?
I'm using the Fonix Voice dialler but have to activate it via the XDA II button and its mic. Would love it if there's a way to patch everything via the car kit.

Hi
this is my first message here....
I was exciting yesterday when i discover this forum!!! I have found a lot of information about the HTC Cruise/Polaris.
I have just a problem:
I fell the RADIO FM very crappy...the signal is alway very disturbed and noise (also when the indication bar are 4/five).
Do you know if there is some trick to adjust or increase the power of the FM radio?
Thank You
There are only a few possibilites...
1. You have a crappy FM reception...
2. You have got a crappy FM chip (in this case get a new one)
3. You didn't tune the channel in correctly
4. You've got a crappy headset (you can check it whith listening to some mp3s)
5. If you have a French ROM, then check the Upgrading subforum, for more useable ROM versions.
That's all I can think of at first...
I think that your headset is not ok. It happend the same to me. The antenna of the headset bundled with the cruise was not OK. The recepcion was awful. With a different headset everything is OK now. Try with one from another cruise or other htc phone.
could you please suggest me some good "headset"??
in addition i would like to use my Sennheiser CX300...there is a possibility to have a good "antenna" and use my headset?

mind you the bar indication only show cellphone network reception it
dont show fm signal str

I own this one:
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=154771&asource=159608
It works fine, allows you to have buttons to control the music reproduction, and allows you to use the Sennheiser. There are simpler models, which transform the usb connector into a 3.5 mm connector which would also allow you to use your sennheiser, although you wouldn't have the buttons. Anyway, make sure that whatever you buy, they have antenna.
Anyway, before buying anything, I would try to borrow from someone a good headset to make sure that the problem with your radio is that. In my case it was. I think that the headset from P3600 and maybe P3300 are compatible.

FH-P8000BT with integrated Bluetooth/external microphone. No Bluetooth adapters to buy. Mine was $230.00 delivered, prices have gone up slightly since I purchased.
Amazon Link
I am posting this because I know there are lots of people having big trouble with certain Bluetooth devices and the Nexus One. While this setup isn't perfect, it's seems to be working better for me than many people are experiencing with factory car Bluetooth installations, particularly in Nissans.
I installed a new head unit in my car today. I didn't have any way to play MP3's in the car, and I wanted to remedy that, and figured why not get something with an integrated bluetooth solution for phone and audio as well while I'm at it.
I picked a double-din Pioneer FH-P8000BT (with built in Bluetooth, but with an external microphone). It's no high end unit, but it has a decent amount of features for the price, and gets good reviews.
Amazon had it for $230ish, delivered.
Pros:
Pioneer syncs bluetooth for both music and phone with Nexus one.
Once paired initially, the Bluetooth connects automatically when the vehicle is started.
Bluetooth audio quality is much better than I expected for Bluetooth.
GPS NAV voice directions work well over car speakers with Bluetooth connection. This is welcome, as the Nexus One's built in speakerphone is not the greatest.
Phone has priority - incoming call switches to phone mode automatically, muting whatever else is playing.
Pioneer microphone for hands free works reasonably well. Typical muffling of outgoing phone audio.
The PAC adapter for steering wheel controls works reasonably well.
It's rated at 50W RMS, which I am sure is bull, but it's still punchier than the stock radio.
Being able to place the external microphone is a real plus compared to having a microphone built into the head unit. It allows for better placement, and since the mic uses a standard mono mini audio plug, it would be a cinch to replace with another to try to improve the sound. But it's unnecessary because the supplied mic works acceptably.
Cons:
Edit: I was able to finally sync the address book - with lots of persistance. Once synced, it retains the info and you don't normally need to resync each time you connect. Syncs fail most of the time.
No Radio preset buttons. You can scan between presets, but nothing resembling an old fasioned push me and go directly to this channel button.
The menus are less than intuitive - for example you have to read the manual to figure out how to set the clock unless you venture a very lucky guess.
There doesn't appear to be a way to shut the radio completely off. Edit: There is, by pressing and holding a multifunction button. There is no dedicated on/off button that is illuminated, which was the source of my initial confusion.
No bluetooth or radio voice dial capability.
Sometimes playback control through the head unit is lost, even if streaming is still working. If I reconnect, it comes back most of the time.
As I said, this is a lower end unit, so maqny of the cons are really a lack of features because I cheaped out. My biggest beef is the address book not syncing reliably - that really should just work. Most of my other complaints are about lack of controls, but what's there works pretty well. I've gained a lot of good functionality, it sounds good and overall, I am happy to have it. Hands free phone and music with plenty of volume and no cords is very nice. I have a car charger in the event I need the NAV. Now all I need is a good bracket to car mount the phone, and it will be a pretty complete solution for travel.
Note: I am using cyanogenmod 5.0.5.3, and have tested with stock ROM. You're BT experience may vary, especially if you're running something else.
attn1 said:
[*]So far, I haven't figured out how to get the address book to sync to make outgoing calls from the radio. This means that although it's a great hands free setup, you're still fiddling with the phone for outgoing calls.

Hi, on my car I have a pionner CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter and I also had problems with the contacts. What I did was, create a vcard ( I think i did this vcard with microsoft outlook) with my top contacts, then I installed 2 programs in the nexus, the Astro file manager and the Bluetooth file manager.
Then with the astro I searched for my vcard and I send it to my car radio by bluetooth ( I had to put on the transfer mode on the radio first).
Now if someone calls me and if that person is on that list the name will apear on the radio, if not only the number.
Hope that can help you and sorry for my bad english.

Your english is fine for this purpose. Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try.
Wel, I managed to sync my phonebook with it today, so now I can make calls without touching the phone. Sweet.
It's great to see that you got everything working properly. I have a Pionner headunit that's not too old, DEH-P710BT (last year's model) but I can't seem to get the a2dp audio working. It'll try to connect the audio and then fail. Phone works though. I figure it'd be pretty similar to your deck in terms of the bluetooth hardware and software that Pioneer uses. If you ever happen to go back to stock firmware on your N1, it'd be great if you could try again and let me know. I wonder if it's just a problem with my N1 using stock firmware. Just not sure if I want to root it yet and install cyanogenmod.

I am back to stock firmware at the moment. It works fine for the most part. Getting the address book to sync took several attempts and sometimes I can't control a2dp playback properly from the head unit. Most of the time it works fine. I haven't really noticed any difference between the stock firmware and Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 that I can put my finger on with regard to interoperability of Bluetooth and this head unit.
Maybe there is a firmware update from Pioneer for your unit?
Thanks for the awesome review and adding it to the Nexus One radio compatability list

Hi everyone. I'm new here. Great review attn1! I am very satisfied with it as well. I have this same exact head-unit and a2dp & phone calls worked perfectly. For example, I could be listening to a podcast on Google Listen, then a phone call would come in. I could then answer it, talk for a bit, hang up, then I Google Listen would resume.
Within the past few days however, I've been having some trouble. Not sure if you've experienced this or not. My BT connection would break. (It doesn't break with other phones) I can't determine what's causing the disconnect because I can't consistently get it to break. Sometimes it breaks in the middle of listening to some music. Sometimes it breaks just before I receive a call which bad because of the laws here in Cali.
The only thing that I did recently was install wifi fixer, but I later removed it. I felt like wifi fixer was messing with my bt... but I'm not completely sure.
On a side note, has anyone been able to get sound to stream over the BT connection? I'm not referring to having the head unit read and play music off the microsd, i can do that just fine. I'm interested if it can tap into the phone's main volume out so that I can hear everything (music, notifications, navigation directions). I could only get this to work a2dp but not through usb.
I'm running the stock 2.1 update 1 firmware.
No trouble with maintaining blue tooth connections on mine, and audio and NAV streaming works fine as well.
Hello everyone I just thought we should compile a list of car head units compatable with the nexus one via Bluetooth is peffered and how well it works.
The idea behind this project is to help people select a new car stereo should you be in the market for a new one or just need a new one to work with your Nexus.
My head unit (Bought 5 minutes ago) is the Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD + CD-BTB200 Bluetooth add on for A2DP/AVRCP from my Nexus which are both supported. The reason I did not get the AVH-P3200BT is because unfortunately A2DP/AVRCP are not supported on that unit... Go figure..

FH-P8000BT with integrated Bluetooth/external microphone. No Bluetooth adapters to buy. Mine was $230.00 delivered, prices have gone up slightly since I purchased.

That's exactly why I decided I didn't really need a DVD player. Bluetooth and DVD is big bucks, but his choice is a good one if you really feel like DVD is important to you.
Yes I've always wanted to watch dvds on long trips in my car when I'm sitting shotgun. with this unit I can not only stream music from my nexus one but I also have the ability to stream video so all the movies on my 32GB card are easily watchable to to mention for maybe $100 I could have navigation added with internal maps should I lose my cell phone signal with maps navigation.
Lets just say I've wanted one since I was 16 and I am now 22 and decided with my phone of forever its time

I never :ever: ride shotgun in my car, and my wife doesn't want to watch video in a car, so DVD is pretty much pointless for us. If she ever changes her mind (I am confident she won't), we have a choice of a few decent laptops with DC power capability for DVD playback in a pinch.
The NAV on the N1 caches maps needed to complete your trip when it calculates your route. As long as you have a signal when you start out, you're good. There is also a market app for GPS that includes maps. Since I rarely use GPS except to play with it, the stock NAV in my N1 is fine for me.
Great information... but maybe this should be in Accessories?
I'm really digging both of the headunits you guys put up... I am probably just going to cheapie route and adding an inline aux jack to my factory setup. 1998 Accord EX FTW!!!!11 (I'm a law student... I can afford a phone, but not a car. )
Edit: You guys should post some pics post install.
I picked up the Clarion CZ509 about a year back for use with BT - works great. ~ $230
Integrated BT, external mic, USB Dongle, AUX in
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020CZ509/Clarion-CZ509.html?tp=5684
BT Streaming and calls are great - external Mic is wired and run up to the visor (LOTS of cable to easily hidden when ran).

Great with the Nexus One? If so, that looks like a great value. Amazon currently has it for $169.00.

I like it quite a bit. The controls on the head unit work without a hitch (for music and incoming calls).
The phone auto connects and it supports phone audio as well as media audio (so Music, Nav, phone all work very well).
The call clarity with the external mic is quite good from what other people tell me. I make quite a few calls on the road and never have a problem with the caller hearing me or clarity. You can answer/end from the head unit (no issues so far).
Music on the built in app works very well as well as slacker radio (the controls on the head unit work in both apps and music pauses on incoming calls).
The only downside to it is the address book integration could stand to be improved (navigating the address book). I set it up back when I had the Touch Pro but never really used it - it's easier to dial from the phone especially if it's docked than to scroll through a list.
If you transfer the contacts you get the incoming number/contact name on the display - if it's unknown it will show unknown and the number.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Hope that's helpful.
JVC KWAVX810 7" TOUCH SCREEN (USB, DETACHABLE FACEPLATE)
Works like a charm with my nexus one. It has a separate mic on the cord that I put on my steering wheel column, people can hear me loud and clear.
You can also pair it with audio tether option to tether music right from N1 to speakers, but I haven't tried that yet. This option never worked with my TouchPro2.

What's a cassette? Is that an 8-track?
I bought this for $160AUD, No bluetooth but it has front USB/AUX and a set of RCA outs to feed my 10" Xplod woofer nicely. The front USB works with the N1, but is somewhat hard to navigate through folders and takes a while to display track info. I wouldn't go as cheap as I did if you're looking to get a great new headunit to go with your new phone.
I am looking at
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846
I usually avoid sony as they tend to be expensive for no reason, but this one is doing everyting that i need
AUX
BT (Headset and A2DP, AVRC)
USB
not bad for the price. $150 shipped
Those are some nice low budget unit in here :-D
Im still using my Pioneer D3 with Pioneer CD BTB200 Bluetooth since my G1 and its perfect...i can use Google Nav(for traffic and updated maps) and Stream Pandora with it no problem
Dual XHD6425 and bluetooth addon module
The head unit was purchased from Crutchfield for about $50 after rebates (HD radio promo) and the bluetooth addon was another $45 from Amazon. The unit has USB input (charges as well) and a 3.5 mm AUX jack. It also recieves HD radio as well. Has AVRCP support and controls the N1 really well.
I went with a JVC KD-R800 for my daily driver:
It can read the Nexus' phonebook, display received/dialed/missed calls, make and take calls on the car's speakers, stream Pandora, mp3's, heck, even system sounds play over the car's speakers. Google navigation pauses the music and talks, then resumes playing music. It auto connects when I get back in the car, and I just hit the silver dial to begin playing again. It can also skip ahead or back on mp3's and forward on Pandora.
It is capable of matching just about any OEM dash lighting, and does a great job of matching the ancient faded green in my 1990 Jetta at night. During the day I have it set to red.
Oh, and it's got a CD/mp3/wma player and radio. But I never use them!
All in all, lots of features, and I'm more than happy with it, especially for USD 155 from Amazon.
So a little (not at all) touted feature of the EDGE is that it contains an active FM tuner in it that can be used to access radio stations over the air. It is very weird that this is a capability that wasn't promoted as, even though this seems like old technology, the beauty of it is that it is built into the EDGE.
Why would I be so excited about this? Because, when you use iHeart or other radio apps to listen to the radio... it is delayed 30 seconds to 5 minutes or more. Not a big deal if listening to music or even talk radio... but a HUGE deal if you are wanting to listen to the radio announcer of a sporting event.
I like to listen to the radio while attending a college football game. Makes it even more interesting and now I can! BUT! The EDGE (and my home tuner) require that there is a wire connected to act as an antenna... otherwise the reception sucks.
I don't want to use a regular wired headset. I HATE wired headsets.
So the question is: Is there a dongle of sorts that could be plugged into the headset jack, that could act as the antenna without routing the audio through it? Next Radio App allows for rerouting the audio through the speaker but it doesn't also include allowing it to be routed to the Bluetooth.
I guess in writing the above I answered my own question with who I should ask next... Next Radio... but thought I'd still throw this out in case y'all know of another app that can use the internal FM Tuner AND send the audio to bluetooth.
Thanks in advance for indulging this question.

Do you have the sprint model? Usually every carrier in the US except Sprint removes the FM radio to force people to stream instead. Sprint was the only carrier to have an FM radio on the Note 3 as well.
EDIT:
To actually answer your question though, there is an app on the Play Store called SoundAbout. It allows you to force various audio (media, notifications, etc.) to be played through a specific output (Speakers, Bluetooth, etc.). You might give that a shot.

Yes. I have the Sprint model. I'm going to have to now check to see if my Note 3 had the FM active. I didn't think that it was... Hmmm....
I'm going to try out SoundAbout. I just bought the PRO version as it has the BT functionality. Need to run by Radio Shack on the way home to get a short audio cable to plug in as the antenna... will report back... Thanks... again.... jooniloh.
hahahah, glad I ran across this thread. I had no idea my phone had a built in FM tuner. Just plugged in my headphones and used the NextRadio app and BAM!! there it was. Thank you
