Just bought a HTC One X from At&t (I know, should've waited for the X+, but I can't go without a phone for a month). I'm new to Android from having an iPhone 4 for the longest time and I'd love to root my device. I've done lots of reading and I can't seem to find a clear answer as to if I can root my device. I've been to htcdev and I can't get the official unlock to work. I've found mixed results by searching where some people successfully unlocked their phones, others said it was impossible, and others said that they had just done the htcdev unlock incorrectly.

Sorry to be the one to tell you but at this point in time root for 2.20 is impossible until we figure out a to exploit to achieve root. Hope I didn't ruin your day. Hopefully we start getting intelligent ideal and get root to unlock bootloader.

If you had done some reading you would have found the answer very easily. Yet another 2.20 thread.
Hello, all.
I am currently stationed overseas in Japan and on au KDDI service and had purchased the HTL21 HTC J Butterfly.
I unlocked bootloader on my first device using SharpIS method of changing SuperCID (22222222) and getting unlock_code.bin from HTC Dev site on stock firmware phone shipped with (1.15 version I believe). Was rooted and running stock. Phone hard bricked about a week after SuperCID process was done and I wasn't fiddling with anything after I rooted phone, so I don't think it bricked from this.
au kindly traded my hard bricked phone for a brand new replacement (yay!). I was hesitant to root this one due to the last one hard bricking and possibly being detected when sent to HTC for repairs. I saw there was a software update and I... STUPIDLY... updated to the latest firmware thinking it would be easier to root after the update rather than go through the process of flashing stock recovery and flashing then losing root. I've had an HTC device before that I'd unlocked and S-OFF so I know how much of a pain it can be.
Now after 1.29.970.1 OTA, I got the itch to tinker again and I no longer can do temproot method to rewrite SuperCID using goroh kun root tools and SharpIS rewrite method. I type adb shell command and I get $, but when I do dev/sh command it says "device not found" and no # (which I know is root access). This is similar to what Droid DNA (sister device) on Verizon are dealing with on their new updates or ones that shipped with latest firmware.
My question is: Is there some other way to get temproot and another root exploit that would allow me to rewrite the CID to SuperCID (22222222 or whatever number if HTC blocked that one too) so I can unlock bootloader?
fnoji111, SharpIS, and goroh kun have come up with some previous exploits that have been patched in this OTA. I have read some poorly Google-translated tutorials on HTCsoku on how to downgrade where fnoji111 states he had luck downgrading and RUU to previous version but I have had no luck (still get main version lower failure message). I have also searched but have found no other exploits other than the one SharpIS posted in the developer forums which is no longer valid due to 1111111 SuperCID being blocked on HTCDev and now temproot no longer allows access to full administrator write permissions using the rootkit. I am not a developer but I have done this process before with this device and an HTC Evo 3D many times and I can follow a clear instruction. Please help!
For the record I am:
S-ON
Bootloader locked
Software version 1.29.970.1
Hboot version 1.41.0000
Radio 1.01.10.0201 (probably irrelevant)
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies!

No, I didn't. I also received an answer from fnoji111 on his site and he said as of now downgrade method only works for X920D International version.

While I appreciate the attempt to answer my problem, as I said in my OP I tried the method by SharpIS03 and it no longer works after OTA to 1.29.370.1. I successfully did this method with previous phone at 1.15.370.1. What's been explained is new OTA is new update disabled write permission to system partition meaning no temproot.
some HOPE?
something new on this site!
maybe some luck? is the same procedure....another kind of s off method, and new stuff from vietnamese people!
in some pictures description we have 1.41 hboot?????

But I think will have $ errors device when I start the first step adb install diaggetroot.apk.........
no hope!
Thanks to all for the answers and for the effort to find a solution. In the final what we gonna do with this j butterfly ? It's so bad to have such a grate phone (the best in the market for my opinion) and not to be able to use it....

Not work with unlock code.... To unlock must be reflashed the radiobaseband... I DON'T kknow-how if with xsim or turbosim it is posibile!
I have no idea if we have some hope to use this phone or of is better to switch directly to anoher one.... taking in account that au introduced already htc one with 13 ultrapixel camera that maybe means less interest for butterfly and less people that gonna work on it...._

Hello everybody on my first post in xda, i need your help, it is why i am here, i have a Htc One X of 16GB but with tegra 3, don't have Lte and it say that is from europe in the hardware info (Have HTC logo, don¡t company logo or at&t logo)(yoigo get that one to me, is free sim) and then i don't know if that one is at&t, evita, if is the XL, or simply one x international, i am just now
i was searching for how to root that one (and if possible flash that one) yesterday and today, i have linux installed, ubuntu 13.10, and all what i try to do fail or didn't work. (believe me, i read a long number of post and download a long number of files and try some different methods typing on the console.
I need your help to root my phone, i will accept to unlock bootloader, to edit hex, to flash 20 files, to downgrade my phone, and to burn my face (preffer to don't do it) if neccesary.
How can i do it?
All possible util data from my device:
Resume (Fully updated with the official software)
USB Depuration mode: On.
Android 4.2.2
Sense 5
Software Version 4.18.401.2
Kernel 3.1.10-g7f360be
Compilation number 4.18.401.2 CL231174 (i was touch that 7 times then i am supposed developer)
Hboot 1.72
What is perfect to me?
My final purppose is flash cyanogenmod 10.2.1, if can't do want to simply get root access.
(Other possibility to me is flash that one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2640571
(i am not noob (of all) i was rooted some devices and flash two devices and don't have problem to try the harder method if someone know how to do what i want to do)
THANKS for the helper and sorry if my english isn't perfect!!

i search and read, i found how to root and flash (and i understand and stand all) but don't work for me, i try to unlock bootloader but fail, i have my Unlock_code.bin, but can't charge that one (last step), i get a command not found problem, you are a senior user, just the user that i am searching to help me, probably you know long more that me but i know to RTFM, i first search the solution here (at&t and international one x forum) then on google, then on tons of sites, but yet don't found the solution, unlock the bootloader is supposed to be easy, the problem on that can be that i am using ubuntu 13.10 and not a windows... (it is why i was writing my pc SO)
thanks for you, but need personal help with that.
Please try to help me with an usual problems list, some ideas, some howto or almost redirect me to the correct link where someone have a similar problem that was solver, because, i can't found that.
Thanks other time , but sorry because don't is usefull to me search (i am yet searching) :crying:

Tegra3 is not the EVITA, its the ENDEAVORU.
To verify, you can boot into hboot and you will either see EVITA or ENDEAVORU.
For ENDEAVORU, its pointless to ask here. Any advice we give you would fail and possibly even brick your phone. You need to go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-x

You should have done some research before you installed the update, it patched the last exploit which means there's no way for you to unlock the bootloader or get root. You'll hav to wait and see IF a dev bothers to crack it on this device which is getting old now.

No you can't without unlocking the unlocking the bootloader and rooting. It's a fairly well established (and discussed) fact that official updates patch root exploits, that's why it pays to research before doing something like that.

When its answered on here there is no method to unlock the bootloader, this includes downgrading. If there was a downgrade method, you would have been directed to that. Downgrading is not allowed on Android without root.

By buying a phone from a source other than your carrier, and also asking to mod the phone to work beyond its intended features (even though WiFi hotspot is intended to work on just about any carrier version except AT&T) you put yourself out of the category of "normal phone user" and it also means you have to do the proper research. Not knowing is no excuse.
Hi, i'm new to the xda community (this is my first post actually) and wasn't sure if this is the right place to post my question...sorry in advance...
I would like to root my Nexus 5 and wanted to know if there's a way to do so without unlocking the bootloader. My version is 4.4.2.
I recently came across the toolkit by wugfresh and I saw you could root the device separately - is it possible to root the device without unlocking using this toolkit?
thanks!

no. you have to unlock the bootloader. after unlocking and rooting, you can relock it. fastboot oem unlock unlocks the bootloader via fastboot, and fastboot oem lock relocks the bootloader.

Next time post questions in Q&A.
1. Don`t use Toolkits as sooner or later you will run into trouble and you will not be able to fix it.
2, Rooting without unlocking the bootloader is impossible on the N5.
3. Read the first 5 threads in the General section well, then you know the basics that will prevent you from bricking your device.

Just go slow as this is a different beast compared to most. I came from a Nexus 6 and that was a piece of cake compared to U11. Read the excellent tutorials here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/u11/how-to/collection-htcu-u11-ruu-firmware-t3612048
and once you have the bootloader unlocked I would advise against relocking as there is no need, you can still return to stock via ruu. Just my 2 cents. Hth!

I learned my lesson big time on that. I didn't research enough when I wanted to receive the OTA update after rooting my U11 months ago and BAM bricked my phone and I didn't have the info to resolve the issue. My phone is now sitting in the HTC repair station for three weeks now.
