Warning: Don't fall for a scam - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 General

In my usual daily search for possible root, I generally don't find anything of interest. Today however, is a different story.
This will be short and simple: Don't get scammed. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. An "article" is circulating the web this morning, in a couple places, claiming the new Android Oreo 8.0 is available for the Amazon HD 8.
"Good news to everyone! Amazon Fire Hd 8 owners can now update their device to 8.0 Oreo by using custom ROM." He even makes it super easy because you "Don't bother to Google or search for it" (because believe everything you read on the internet. It's true. [NOTE EXTREME SARCASM]). Why? They conveniently "uploaded it for you."
Don't fall for scams. As of the posting of this thread, to my knowledge and the knowledge of developers on this site, there is NO "Android Oreo custom ROM" available for the HD 8 and is NOT available for ANY Amazon tablet regardless if it's rooted. In fact, there is NO custom ROM available AT ALL for the HD 8. You CAN however, flash a custom ROM if you have a Fire HD 7, assuming it can be rooted and is earlier than FireOS 5.3.2.1.
The current FireOS, 5.4.4.0 CANNOT be rooted, the bootloader IS LOCKED therefore NO custom ROM is available for ANY Amazon tablet, regardless of it's size. Sorry for being so 'bold' *snicker*, but I hate seeing posts and threads about people bricking their devices beyond repair because they believed someone on a blog. When in doubt, take some time to look over XDA and find the proper forum section pertaining to your device for assistance. If all else fails, contact your service provider or device manufacturer.
You can check your tablet for updates by tapping settings > device options > system updates > check for updates. It will also tell you the latest FireOS version. You can download an app like 'Droid Hardware Info' to see what Android base you have.. Install > open > device > OS version. The newest tablets are Android Lollipop 5.1.1.

So there's no possible way the fire os 5.5 will have a root or a custom ROM?

Android Market - There is no device

This was their response to my questions related to the Viewsonic G-Tablet:
----------------------------------------
Hi,
Thank you for your reply. After further research, according to our records, the device that you are using is not supported for use with Android Market at this time.
The Android operating system is open source, which means that any device manufacturer is free to use Android on its devices. However, Android Market is an application created by Google that is only made available to devices that pass Google’s compatibility requirements. In addition, manufacturers must obtain a license from Google in order to install Android Market on their devices.
For more information about the Android Compatibility Program, please visit source.android.com/compatibility/index.html
If you have any further questions, I recommend contacting the manufacturer of your device directly.
If I can assist you further, please let me know.
Regards,
Jenna
The Android Market Team
What did you ask and did you really expect support on an unsupported device?
Sorta like taking a netbook with snow leopard to the genius bar and asking for help with iTunes.

Wow.. you found this site, you found this forum, and you missed the million different posts for Market Fix, Full Android Market, etc...
You need to do some work to get the market working on the GTab. Out of the box it's not supported. It's likely never going to be officially supported unless by some miracle we get a honeycomb update from Viewsonic.
In the meantime, it is pretty easy to get access. Just don't ask Google for help doing it.
And, there's always the Amazon market, which works just swell...

[Resolved] [Q] can i install iOS on Android

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and this is my first post
I have a Huawei Ascend Y320 (Android 4.2 Jellybean, dual-core processor etc), and I have heard that it is possible to run iOS on an Android device.
I have seen a similar thread discussing this topic... but the 'how-to' link in the thread does not load the desired page
I have also found this through a Google search 'iosonandroid' However the page forces one to make purchases for products and services that I don't want and don't furthermore trust.
So, that brings me back to my question, can one run iOS on Android...?
Please don't knock me for this, as though I quite like Android OS, I need to access iOS apps, such as 'iMovie', and other similar video editing/movie making software.
Android has many apps for such purposes, however, most are merely clones of Androids' stock Movie Maker, which has limited abilities, and can be quite buggy. I have managed to find a couple of great video editing/movie making apps on Google Play, but I would still be keen to be able install iOS apps to broaden my capabilities.
Any constructive help would be much appreciated
Cheers,
Harry
I'm going to answer your question quickly before someone thinks it'll be funny to troll you.
Sadly I will have to say, you cannot run iOS on Android, some developers have found a way to run iOS apps on Android but they haven't released much info on that.
The sites that say, you can run it. They're all bullcrap and just want you to register and fill out surveys. If there was iOS for Android, I'm sure it'd be on YouTube, and here on xda.
So again, you can't run iOS on Android.

Thanks for that Glad I got a 'straight to the point' answer from you, I really appreciate that.
I have seen evidence of heavy trolling on other threads... which makes it extremely difficult for people like myself trying to work out a solution to a query or problem.
And yes, I did wonder about the survey/register blah blah spam on the 'iOS on Android' website. I am glad I did not go through with the process, as it seems especially dodgy considering there is no way of contacting the dev....
Exactly, and the thing is, there is no specification for the device. It just has pictures of samsung and htc phones with the iOS screenshot and then the requirements on the page is based on Android OS versions... And it supports eclair. Lol.
Maybe sometime in future some smart developer will figure out how to run iOS on Android.

Hello, and welcome to XDA!
I find those things inaccurate, as the notification area estimate (including percent complete) rarely matches (or comes close to) the Play Store app estimate. That also begs the question on responsibility...are you talking having time remaining within the app, or in the notification area?
Right now for either, it's a fight against time. With the former, you are dealing with an older version of Google Play and Google Play Services, the responsibility of Google and that version (guessing 6.x where current is 8.x) is critical security updates only (if any at all) - no feature requests allowed. The latter scenario, probably relies on the former for information, but if not, it would be the responsibility of your ROM developer (e.g. Samsung Touchwiz 4.2/CM10.1/et cetera). They are in the situation of getting only critical security updates (if any at all) as well. After all, Android 4.2.1 enters it's fourth year of existence in November, and the attitude of Google is once a new codename has been officially released, all attention goes towards the new version (so the older stuff quickly becomes "abandonware").
CyanogenMod has been good on keeping older Android versions alive. Not so much for themselves, but for the older ROM's that borrow their code. The recent StageFright problem (dubbed SF1.0 as there is now a new batch of vulnerabilities) CM went back as far as 10.1/4.2.2 to patch the problems. With latest SF2.0 and the recent release of Marshmallow/6.0 I don't know if CyanogenMod will go that far back for their fixes this time (I am watching, as I have some Android 4.4.4 stuff to patch and plan to base off of CM11).
That was the long. The short being, since 4.2.1 is no longer a priority, I don't see it happening. Sorry.

Integrating Over-the-Air Updates in Custom AOSP Project (AOSP noob)

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and have joined as I've started working on a private/commercial version of AOSP. I've worked in mobile apps natively and more recently using React Native for the last 5 years and am enjoying hacking and playing around the source.
The main usage for build of AOSP is for a bespoke vehicle tracking device with a few additional features. So far I've managed to build AOSP, flash onto a device, and most recently set the tracking app as the home app so that it boots on launch.
The question that I can't find a solid answer to online is does anyone the best way of going about modifying AOSP so that we can deploy an OTA zip update and have the OS download and update it?
I'm not sure if this is necessarily the best way/use of time. I'm guessing it might be easier to just update the app itself internally and not develop OTA updates for the OS? I think at this stage I'm just after opinions before I spend too much time getting stuck into it. My only concern would be that we have 100+ devices out there and no ability to update the OS... although if it's a basic build of AOSP that just removes a few pre-installed apps, has a custom bootlogo and replaces the home app, maybe that's not necessary?
Any advice at this early stage would be gratefully received! Additionally, any tips for development or something a noob would benefit from would be great.
Thanks,
Joel

Is it possible to install Security Updates alone, without upgrading Android?

(I hate to cross-post, but given the sheer number of readers on this part of the forum when compared to Security Discussion, I thought it was a better choice to post here too, and I hope the modos will be kind enough to either remove my original post in Security Discussion, or link it to this part of the forum and delete the present post.)
Hi everyone,
I can't find a satisfactory answer on my favorite search engines, so I thought I'd come here and ask. Sorry if this question has already been put on the table, carved, sliced and gobbled, I couldn't find trace of it in the forum's search engine either.
My phone's a Leagoo T5c that will forever be stuck on Android 7.0, it seems, because the OEM has already lost interest, and because its SoC makes it difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a suitable custom ROM.
The latest ROM I could find and install on this phone goes back to August of 2018 (no-no, no typos), and its Security Update is even one month older (July 2018).
My question is in the title: Is it possible to install Security Updates without reinstalling/updating/upgrading the firmware itself, like you would in, say, Windows or any other OS, I presume?
