I tried to google, and searched on XDA as well. But I cannot find any thread that clearly explains the difference between the bootloader mode and download mode.
What is the basic difference between them ?
adb reboot bootloader - boots into fastboot mode in my Xiaomi Redmi 3S. Is the fastboot mode same as download mode ? If it is, does that mean adb reboot bootloader and adb reboot download have the same meaning ?
Sometimes across threads, I have read that even the recovery and fastboot mode are same. Though I'm pretty sure they aren't, but could someone please explain how they differ ?
I found a question on android.stackexchange, but couldn't quite understand the answer.

Bootloader is code that executed when your operating system starts. Bootloader is a set of instructions that how operating system starts to run apps smoothly.
Download mode, Bootloader mode and fastboot mode are same. Download mode is related to samsung devices. "adb reboot download" command is used for boot samsung device in download mode for flashing purpose.
"adb reboot bootloader" command used for other devices to boot in fastboot mode for flashing.
Recovery mode and fastboot are different.
fastboot mode used for flashing roms.
Recovery mode is used for factory data reset, clear cache, flash official update package(Stock) and can backup and restore whole rom and data, flash mods, custom roms (custom like CWM AND TWRP)

Do you mean that when the 'device' starts ? Because I read here on xda, that bootloader is before the device boots into 'Android' or 'recovery' .
Also, you said

Yes. Bootloader executed before android system starts. It have set of instructions that how system starts and runs operations.
Download mode is only term that uses for Samsung devices and fastboot mode for others. The meaning and purpose of both is same.

There is bootloader mode and then there is bootloader.
Bootloader mode is the flashing mode.
Bootloader is the code executed before android system boots.
Some devices boot to a bootloader mode and then have a menu to choose which mode to switch to: fastboot, recovery, etc..
The difference between download mode and fastboot has been explained to you already.
I DO NOT PROVIDE HELP IN PM, KEEP IT IN THE THREADS WHERE EVERYONE CAN SHARE
The bootloader is code that is executed before any Operating System starts to run. Bootloaders basically package the instructions to boot operating system kernel and most of them also have their own debugging or modification environment. Think of the bootloader as a security checkpoint for all those partitions. Because if you’re able to swap out what’s on those partitions, you’re able to break things if you don’t know what you’re doing. So basically it commands the kernel of your device to Boot the Device properly without any issues. So careful with bootloader since it can mess things very badly.
Recovery is defined in simple terms as a source of backup. Whenever your phone firmware is corrupted, the recovery does the job in helping you to restore or repair your faulty or buggy firmware into working condition. It is also used for flashing the Rom’s , kernel and many more things.

The difference is, fastboot mode is the mode designed for flashing the device when fastboot is functioning correctly.
Qhsusb dloader 9008 is when the device has been bricked. The device has to be restored by a specific method when in this state.

Sorry for digging this topic up, but I have a few questions here regarding the Bootloader and the Dloader 9008, so please help to answers if you still follow this thread.
+ For Qualcomm based devices, when in Qloader 9008 ( let's say EDL if I made no mistakes ) then is this true that we can do anything to our devices at this mode? Says, I'm using QPST, and I'm in EDL mode, can I flash a new bootloader to the devices? And if yes, how can I do that?
+ My situation here is a little complicated, one of my ROM testing device, is Xiaomi A1 ( or at least, I think so until few days back ). But then one day, it just bricked when I try to flash a custom ROM, and of course I tried to flash the stock A1 firmware in order to un-brick it. But then, it stays at 900E mode ( Diagnostics mode, not Qloader 9008 ).
Then I had to dig deeper and find out that my device is not actually A1, it's Mi 5X with A1 firm.
Next, I tried to flash 5X firm to bring it back from bricked, but still no luck. Again, I found out that my device is not only 5X, but it's a Tiffany device with Oxygen bootloader ( and worst thing is, it's locked by accident ).
Coming to this point, I'm kind of lost. After reading many articles, try many methods ( lets say my device always in 9008 for the last few days )))) ) but still not able to bring it back from death.
So, if it's anyway to bring it back to life, please help to instructs the process, I have all the tools with me along with about 100GB of firms ( A1, 5X, Mi Max 2, Miui EU....etc ).
Thanks in advance, guys!

I realize this is a very old post, but in hopes that the information will be helpful to any current device owners, I'll address the question:
The AT&T Alcatel IDEAL (4060a) ships with a fully.unlocked bootloader. As such, installing TWRP custom recovery is simple to do once root of the stock OS is attained. NOTE: fastboot mode has been disabled on the 4060a by Alcatel (TCL). Trying to boot to bootloader mode from recovery or using the command
adb reboot recovery
from a terminal or command prompt will only reboot the device. Without fastboot mode, recovering a bricked device is very problematic unless the device will boot into TWRP recovery mode. From TWRP, a stock Android 5.1.1 ROM can be installed which will recover your device to its stock factory state. In the unfortunate event your device is hard bricked (unable to boot into either the OS or TWRP recovery mode), your only option is to push stock firmware to the device using a firehose programmer via Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader (9008 mode), also known as Emergency Download Mode (EDL).
Please !!!, where do I find the "firehose programmer file" for the AT & T ALCATEL 406

Please !!!, where do I find the "firehose programmer file" for the AT&T ALCATEL 4060a? My Phone is hard Bricked.
Hello
I have a Google pixel 128 GB device but recently it got bricked after an ota update. Unfortunately my phone is not rooted or unlocked. So I could not do anything under fastboot, also adb is crashed.
So the phone is bricked. But it can be rectified using QPST is edl mode I suppose. But as of now there is no such development for qpst for Google pixel.
But there are many users they face the same issue recently.
Is there any chance of development for it?
you said bootloader ! you mean the phone can boot into bootloader mode ! after that you said edl mode ? i dont understand. please explain. i may help !
*The Phone Goes into Fastboot with no problems.
*In Fastboot Mode if i try to go to Recovery, The Phone Reboots and does not go to the Recovery But it Keeps on Rebooting.
So the Recovery Partition of the Phone might be Corrupted.
So im looking for ways to Flash the Recovery partition with QPST or any other methods.
Fastboot Doesn't Help Because the Bootloader is locked.

I do believe I've tried this to no avail on a Verizon g-2pw4100-022-b (the "b" probably stands for "brickable").
I'm stuck in the same situation:
Power+vol down - bootloader
Bootloader to recovery - boot loop
Bootloader to barcodes - barcodes show
Edit: power on only leads to constant screen flashing unless you hold volume down for bootloader, at which point you can vol up once and power down.
Can't flash a recovery, can't flash an OTA since that requires adb sideload, which is part of recovery, and can't flash a factory image with the bootloader locked, which is only unlocked under development tools.
One thing to note is that in the bootloader screen, both "b/l" and the one below it (radio?) both say "n/a", which leads me to believe the December update from Verizon could be the cause.
Suggestions as to how to proceed are greatly appreciated.

I have a Reddit thread how to activate qpst .
You can also "adb reboot edl" if your PC can recognize your phone at least.
If not, power button and volume up(or down, I don't remember) for at least forty seconds sometimes brings it up
But then you'd need firmware to flash with qpst and I'm not sure how to go about doing that

adb and fastboot include a generic Google driver and the VCOM driver installer for mtk includes what you'll need. Once in fastboot...
Code:
fastboot oem unlock-go
Follow the instructions on your device to unlock the bootloader. Then boot to system and reboot to fastboot with bootmode tool. Once in fastboot...
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot oem reboot-recovery
Then it should boot to TWRP. Be sure to format data f2fs to remove encryption so you can mount data.
And you will need to install Magisk from recovery to have root and keep. OEM recovery from replacing TWRP.

Thanks for the reply! I tried this tool, along with adb commands, etc., and I just can't even get fastboot. This would be an AWESOME phone, if not for this dumb crap!! The phone I had before this one is a Z717VL, and it sucks as well. They are both Tracfone phones that were given to me by my wife. I think I'll just get a Galaxy S8 or so and just root it instead. All other phones that I had on Verizon in the past have been super easy... just a One-Click-Root. Thanks everyone for your time and help!

@lehmancurtis I feel like you might be lying about whether or not your method works, as the boot mode tool does not work. @lmgnsa did it work for you?
I got it to work by loading the boot mode tool, selecting fastboot, and plugging the phone in when it is turned off while holding volume down.

To keep recovery from being replace several files need to be disable (various approaches are effective i.e. removed, replace, or renamed). Magisk usually handles this task, but sometimes there are exceptions. But, you need to address that before flashing gsi's for multiple reason and none are fun to deal with. Yes, this is A only and does not use A/B update method (at least not entirely as a few partitions are making use of the A/B partition labels). I've not been doing much with this particular device since mine was cracked and the usb port messed up when I got it, so nature took its course before I was able to achieve a fully stable custom setup.

You need to modify a few files. It's almost just like the 5059 devices and you can look up the 5041c thread to see what needs edited. Use the fstab.mt6739 from the 5041c.
Here's the tool. I think some of the links to it got messed up. Make sure you turn on developer options and check that oem unlock is ticked as well as adb usb options. Once in fastboot, issue the following
Code:
fastboot oem unlock-go
Follow the instructions on the device. Then boot into system and complete setup so that you can turn on developer options again since your device was just reset. Boot to fastboot once again and issue these.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery ./recovery.img
Code:
fastboot oem reboot-recovery
That should be the custom recovery you just installed. It will be replace on reboot if steps are not taken. I was in the process of working this issue when my beat up a501dl succumbed to its varied and multiple impact injuries. If I can find the time to repair it I will finish where I left off, but in the mean time I will help as much as I can.
Regular drivers are built into the phone but you may need vcom drivers. I'm going to attempt to repair mine enough to reset and flash again. I'll probably have to nav my screen via commands, but I will attempt to capture the process and show you.
I've got a A501DL, I enabled usb debugging and oem unlock, seems like the A501DL in fastboot does not talk with the pc, i've installed so many driver things its crazy butat fastboot when typing fastboot reboot bootloader, it reboots the phone but it skips fastboot and turns on to my home screen, I used volume up and power, I get in fast boot butthe device isnt being detected by windows 10 64 bit. Also in fast boot there is only
reboot system now
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
power off
im going nut that fastboot isnt working with this device.

You can use command "fastboot oem edl".
EDL mode(usually a full black screen) will timeout in few seconds if not receive any command from MSM, so you can start MSM flash frist then put phone to EDL.

Your unit was most likely manufactured after March 9th 2021, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ice-to-oxygenos.4180837/page-14#post-84789741 for reference. You therefore need to use HydrogenOS 11.0.7.12 MSM to recover your device linked at https://www.oneplusbbs.com/thread-5886794-1.html (mirrored at https://mega.nz/file/O8UySbgR#cXGlHkdA_7CYEhKIrek9zzAEwJ7Vx1D5BZdemnPlvGE by @pikatenor ). Getting new OxygenOS MSM tools is nowadays impossible unless you own the device it is meant for, so OP will not be updated to add new OxygenOS MSM tools allowing to workaround this issue. Feel however free to reach out to me in DM if you would like to get told how to maximise your chances to obtain one.

WiFi not working because the boot.img you flash is not match your system version.
You can use command "fastboot oem edl".
EDL mode(usually a full black screen) will timeout in few seconds if not receive any command from MSM, so you can start MSM flash frist then put phone to EDL.
Two possible situations need attention:

Fastboot unbrick guide didn't work for you?
Maybe continue to try the key combination, open device manager, if you see devices name: …QDLoader 9008(driver installed) or …QHUSB_BULK(driver not install). That's EDL mode.
Some guide suggest this two command may work:
"fastboot reboot edl"
"fastboot reboot-edl"
Also can try "fastboot boot recovery that have adb.img" then use command "adb reboot edl".
okay so i none of that worked just continues to say unknown command or unknown partition. with the qual com i dont see anything otherthan android device for phone related stuff in the device manager. is there something ican do to get these partition errors to go away? last night i wasn't having any trouble with them and now they are everywhere and i really dont understand why becuase i hardly flashed anything last night. today i started flashing stuff from the guide you recommended/the one ive been using all this time and thats when the partition errors started and now im seeing them everywhere and i followed the guide down to the dime.
solved out of pure rage i restored my pc to factory and when it started back up i redownload msm and phone connected perfectly. also correctly rooted by adb pulling my own boot.img. ty for your help

That was one way to go, but for others. The problem was your adb/fastboot was old. Should no longer use the minimal adb it's outdated. Always use the latest platform tools.

Exactly @nujackk ,
I have found the most likely reason for an "unknown command" message to a newer fastboot command is an old fastboot.exe version.
I am trying to flash to stock/global firmware from T-Mobiles. I have already unlocked the bootloader but I am confused on what to do next. Some people say all you need to do is flash the system and boot images. But when i try to flash the system it says unknown partition. If I try to flash everything it says Critical partitions can not be flashed and I dont know how to unlock them, fastboot flashing unlock_critical is an unknown command. Please help!
Try on adb using " adb reboot fastboot" reboot to fastbootd and flash system, vendor.

Ive progressed a bit and decided to use MSM Download Tool. Although I cant seem to get into EDL mode. My phone is bricked so i cant use adb, and fastboot commands dont seem to be working. Ive tried button combinations but they just lead me either into recovery mode or fastboot mode.
In fastboot, type fastboot reboot fastboot see whether can boot into fastbootd or not.

This is a very simple fix. You can boot into fastboot, do that again, and flash LineageOS Recovery while your there
Boot into recovery, choose advanced options, than enable ADB. Boom, now you can use ADB on your bricked phone.
.
The command you're looking for once there is "adb reboot edl"
Also a lot of the guides on how to convert to Global either use broken methods, or link to the wrong files. If I had a dollar eveytime someone messaged me about following a guide and ending in crash dump mode I'd have a lot of dollars. DM me if you wanna know how to get to global and you're struggling.
