HTC U11, Pixel 2 XL, maybe Essential PH-1.

Well, you're asking in an u11 forum.. So what's your guess?
I'm sure the LG g6 thread and the pixel thread you must have started have different ideas...

Considering the new Pixel phones won't be out until September (allegedly), you can't know what they'll reallly be like.
The same goes with the Essential PH-1.
From your initial list, I'd pick the U11 just because the Pixel is a bit outdated now (it's a year old) and the G6 uses last years processor.
But if you add other announced devices, the situation might change. However, the U11 might get discounted after the Pixel 2 and other devices are available, so maybe the U11 could still be the best pick.

Don't buy LG G6, the UI is not as polish and smooth as U11. You can't root the G6 as well. HTC U11 has a more superior camera.

Considering I just had to use my 10 to take a picture of my U11, I got a huge reminder of how much faster the U11 is.
Just get a good case and screen protector. Gorilla Glass 5 is junk and all the flagships are using it.
If you want LG, wait for the V30 or fork over for the Pixel 2 XL but I can tell you that the U11 is a beast of a device. Even though I managed to scratch the display, I still maintain its the best device I've ever used. Gorilla Glass 5 is just easier to scratch apparently. Nothing a screen protector can't fix but something to be aware of with all the new phones using it. If I had a dollar for every time I hear someone cracked their S8s, I could probably buy a second U11.

I had the G6 for a short while... It really is a great phone and I have to disagree with Windozeanti about the UI not being polished and smooth because I experienced no such thing, but it is true about there being no root. You do miss out on having the latest processor as well, but that's if you can even tell the difference. There's a lot of great deals going on for it as well which may be enough to sway your decision. The U11 is better overall though and so will the next PIxel, but we still have a couple days before we get the info on it.

I had the htc for two weeks but it had a screen flaw and I had a replacement where I payed the extra cash and got the U11 and damn there is a big difference
the U11 is very very fast the design is also more luxurious but less durable camera is of course better and one of the most additions is the boom sound they are much louder than the 10 so grtting the u1q will be an upgrade just make sure you get the 6gb ram version otherwise don't as the future proofing will differ very much.

Anyone coming from a Pixel XL?

Anyone want to share their experience coming from a Pixel XL. I'm really wanting to buy the HTC U11 but have a few reservations.
1. Is the software smooth? Skin ok?
2. Camera performance?
Thank you in advance.

I too am very curious about compare of the Pixel XL to the U11. The Pixel looks quite barebones...but thats the point of the device.
The Pixel price is way up there for brand new....but u are paying for that 1 to 1 relationship with Google to be first for updates. I can get a used Pixel XL for around $600....or brand new U11 from Amazon for $700 after tax.
Having a real hard time choosing between the 2.

I came from the pixel xl. The HTC u11 is better and feels like an improved pixel with features we wish it had
I migrated from Pixel XL... It was a great device... But HTC U11 has better sound and is faster and smoother than pixel. I used Nova launcher on pixel because i never liked the google launcher... But here i like sense ui (i know its outdated, but for me it is new as my last htc was m8)
I haven't used the camera much so cannot comment on that... But you can see to youtube videos of the comparison.
Some may see the HTC as "better" ...but in a year or so...when no updates are pushed..and the device is forgotten...the Pixel will continue to get updates for at least 2 yrs.

Yes, it's a tradeoff with any non-Pixel/ Nexus device. You just have to choose what you want in terms of features and what you're willing to trade off for them.
Camera important to me. HTC U11 camera as good or better?

Updates never change the phone so dramatically that it even matters that much. HTC maintains a solid performer wherever it is left off. This is not the deal breaker Nexus/Pixel fans make it out to be. It's just over-hyped, just like how people always waiting for updates for their favorite ROM's, it may not make any big changes, we just like the excitement of flashing sh%t. Besides that, the new HTC 12 will be out by then
I stopped in at Best Buy to play with the Pixel and Pixel XL. They didn't have a HTC U11 tough. I also considering the Sony Xperia XZ Premium which has a 4K screen.
While I was at best Buy...the had on demo a Huawei Mate 9. WOW...the display really stands out. Sharp, bright. I looked it up...only 1080p IPS LCD...but it sure doesn't look like it. Looks way better than the Pixel XL lcd. Still need to look at the HTC U11 and the Sony...if i can find a store that has them on demo....to see how those look.
The pixel XL has amoled. One of the best screens around. I would recommend the honor 8 pro if you want a phone like that. But just remember the software is pretty ugly and iphoneish with zero development.
The Sony is suppose to be a good phone but it's ugly as all hell and takes bezels to another ridiculous level
I bought the Sony XZ Premium at Best Buy and ordered the HTC U11 online. I'll play with both and decide which one to keep.

I came from the htc m9 and for some reasons I feel like I wasted my money.
Its not THAT much 'more' than the m9. I wouldn't say that the camera is anything to write home about, again, but the screen is brighter, the sound is louder to the point where clipping is common, the heat is hotter and 'sense' makes less sense..
It's a nice phone but I'm juggling the thought that keeping my m9 for a couple of more years might have been the better choice, at least over the 64gb version.

+1!
I found a demo of the Sony at a different Best Buy store. I like the feel of it and they way they have skinned Android. Screen isn't as eye pooping as all the hype is for it. I read it only renders the UI in 1080p...and only goes into 4k res when it detects 4k content. In this case, to me, it looks just average for normal use. Also, the front facing speakers are a huge JOKE! In a fairly quite store, at max volume, its far to quite. Not much louder than the regular earpiece u use when on a normal non-speaker phone call. My Moto X Pure front facing speakers are 4x as loud. So...$800 for that device ......no thanks.
No Sprint store in my area has a demo of the HTC U11.
The Mate 9, i don't know how they made the lcd look so good....but i almost bought it. I dont mind the OS they use, but it does feel a bit, janky.
I bought a Pixel XL 128gb new-resale off of Swappa for $600. That should come later this week.
Great choice mate. The pixel XL is a cracking phone. Super quick. Fast updates and an amazing camera.
Although after having the pixel XL for a few months the u11 does feel the next step up...feels like the pixel XL 1.5 ...pretty much stock with more festures and adds in newer specs and a few things many will feel the pixel could have had. Micro SD card/waterproof etc.
But you can't go wrong with the pixel XL. I've gone back to it twice after using different phones

Kinda would have prefered the smaller Pixel....but it was actually selling for more on Swappa..(or within ~ $20).
However, if the rumors are true that Google is not gonna make a Pixel XL 2...a 5.5 in model, but instead a 6in XXL ...or something...then the current XL is the best bet right now.
Unless they manage to remove the bezels, and fit a 6in LCD in the same size frame of the current XL.
Also, no point in buying the 5in Pixel now , if the 2nd gen one comes out in like 4 or 5 months or so.
Annoyed that I gota wait a while until Android O comes out to get Apt X BT support. My headphones and head unit supports AptX....so..yea...
Still interested in what HTC has to offer though. Too bad for them that Sprint doesn't have them in my local stores.

The Sony XZ premium demo at Best Buy was a hot mess. It almost made me not purchase the phone. I'm glad I did. The phone grows on you.
I'm still waiting for the red U11. HTC told me it won't be shipped until Mid July even though it says in stock on website.

The true HTC M8 successor

This is what the M9 should have been and HTC10 could defiantly been better. U11 is great and all but still the linage of the M8 is missing. Even though this is made by HTC and is not a direct relative to the M8 but certainly it has some similarities, So all in all where the U11 failed this wins at least for me what about you?
I am retiring the M8 as my second phone for this beauty. First phone would hopefully be the iPhone X.
I still love my HTC10 and will get the Pixel 2 eventually. I just found the U11 too big, and the lack of band 30 was a killer. My question is will we notice a difference between an FHD screen vs QHD?
For me it was the glass back on the U11 that was a deal breaker. It was the most bendable breakable phone yet. I think glass backs are so dumb. I also find glass/ceramic backs to be glitzy and not an appealing design.
Of course, the real true successor to the M8, was the iPhone 6. The design on that phone go so much praise and yet so much of it was copied from the M8. I think HTC really does not get the credit they deserve in terms of advancing phone designs. The Nexus One, made by HTC, was the first unibody aluminum phone. Also the first modern touchscreen smartphone to have active noise cancellation, long before it was standard.
Anyway, I really hope Google never puts another glass back on a phone. And HTC really needs to dump it for the U12, or whatever comes next.

in your eyes you will not see the difference between FHD vs QHD only if you want to zoom you will see more details on QHD
I really did love my M8, I had the Nexus 5 before then and ingot the m8 I never really used the N5 until lollipop beta. Superb battery, and build quality and I had I had converted to GPE. Would love to play with one for a month to relive the nostalgia

I couldn't agree more - I was just thinking how everyone is talking about a phone with dual cameras and how they can do 'live photos' or something like that. The HTC m8 had dual cameras, bokeh effect (tho' it wasn't called that at the time), and 'live pictures' years before anyone (much less Apple) was doing it. It's a shame that HTC isn't (wasn't?) as good with marketing as they are with innovation.

Pixel xl vs essential

Anyone make the switch? To be honest, I'm still very happy with my pixel xl. Camera is relevant and the ux/ui performance is still top notch.
I'm thinking this would be a side-grade and not really an upgrade?
Sent from my LG-H932 using Tapatalk
I just picked up an Essential to replace an HTC 10. For me, I was looking at used Pixel XL's (128GB) and new Essential Phone since they're around the same pricepoint.
What came down to it for me was the Snapdragon 835, new/fresh battery, and probably less warranty issues with a brand new phone.
I have a Nexus 6p and I bought an Essential phone and I'm selling the Essential because the camera quality was poorer (even with g cam trying optimizing it, pictures have a slight yellow hue and the picture is a little bit less sharp, while the Nexus 6p often have the best colors right off the bat) and the passage from AMOLED back to LCD was meh. Plus you gonna still have the update faster if you stick to the Pixel. But the build quality is fantastic.

I sold my pixel for the essential.
The pixel camera app is much quicker and more reliable than essentials. As far as picture quality goes, indoors, when trying to capture more fine details the Pixel camera definitely wins. In good lighting and outdoors I can't tell a difference between the 2.
In terms of everything else the essential is better. Build quality and materials are better. More storage for less money. Performance is better on the essential. The essential is easier to tote around and use one handed because the bezels are smaller. If it wasn't for essential taking so long to improve the camera app then I would say it is the best smartphone experience I have had. And I have had a lot. Like over 20 easily.
Also I went through 6 pixels. The first one had paint chipping issues like nothing I have ever seen. The second one had a faulty speaker. The third one had radio issues. The 4th had fast charge issues. The 5th had issues with overheating to the point where I couldn't hold the device. And I am not a heavy user. And the 6th I sold as soon as it came in.

The original. I thought about getting the Pixel 2 but the high price and screen issues keeps me away. If a phone cost nearly $1000 it better be perfect.
I think I ended up with the Essential Phone partly by choice and partly by accident. I'm a Sprint customer. My old Galaxy S5 was broken, I needed a phone that was cheap, as up to date as possible, and available NOW. That was early September. The PH-1 was by far the cheapest option for me to buy through Sprint.
There's a lot to love and a lot to hate. The camera app has gotten better but won't be winning any awards pretty much ever. That said, it's decent. The phone's form factor is small, which means it can fit into a pocket where a Pixel XL won't. As a longtime Samsung owner I love the pure android ability to get rid of bloat, but I'm used to a much more reliable experience and a much better looking screen. I love the huge screen on a tiny phone, but LCD is just so pedestrian at this point. I was always running out of internal space on my Samsung, so it's awesome to have 128GB internal. It's annoying that SD card support and phone jack weren't included. It's probably the best looking phone out there right now, which is kinda cool. Sadly, it's very buggy. It loses connection with my android watch and I've had to completely wipe and reconnect it a few times already. There is no "press the _____ button" to activate Google Assistant" option (as least not that I know of) which is a bit of a downer. Voice recognition is super buggy. The phone says it's listening, but you have to wait of few seconds because it will miss the first few words you say. It also takes about 5 words voice-to-text, then just simply stops taking/writing anymore words. You have to cancel and hit the microphone icon again to get it another 5 words , wash rinse repeat. The touchscreen tends to be unresponsive. It's gotten a bit better since the last patch, but it's still not great. It would have been nice if the fingerprint scanner doubled as a home button like LG does. Finding a case for the Essential Phone was a nightmare, but they're pretty easy to find now. The phone SHOULD BE one of the fastest phones on the market, but instead it's laggy. And one of the biggest reasons to get the Essential Phone -- clip on modules -- is kindof a nothingburger at this point. Honestly, I wish I could have held out for an LG V30+, but it wasn't out yet.
i'm also hesitating...
Just to chime in I got this coming from the pixel, not XL. I really like this phone, especially on the 8.1 beta. Its a great little handset, feels awesome, much better battery than anything Google has, and very snappy. I also had wicked issues flashing anything on my pixel. No trouble so far with the essential for me.

Despite all the negative press, the pictures aren't bad. Their not as good as the pixel, true, but I don't use a phone as my main source for high quality pictures. I know many folks do simply because they always have their phone on them. The bottom line is, no one is going to look at a picture you took with this phone and think, "ew, did your 5-year old draw that?" It works just fine.
I heard about this phone early this year did some research and decided to buy it from Amazon on Jan 24th. I came from a Galaxy S6 and it was a good phone (battery was getting bad) but this phone is head and shoulders better! Especially now that we are running the Oreo B8.1! It is super stable and smooth much more than my old Galaxy S6. I was thinking of trying the Oneplus 5t or maybe the new Huawei Mate 10 pro but I am not sure I will be any happier. Never had the Pixel or 2 If they looked this good I'd buy tomorrow!

Switch from Pixel 2 XL

Hey guys I'm thinking of switching from the Pixel 2 XL to the OnePlus 6.
Some of the reasons I'm thinking of switching is that I miss having the headphone jack. It's gotten quite annoying not having it. I don't take many pictures, so I'm not too concerned with the camera downgrade. Price is definitely a big deal. I can sell my Pixel on Swappa and essentially break even. If I wait til the Pixel 3 and trade mine in, I still have to come up with 300-400 to upgrade. If I switch the the OnePlus 6, I'm getting the latest specs, extra RAM at pretty much no cost.
What do you guys think? Wanna help me decide?

I came from the HTC U Ultra, and for me atleast the One Plus turned out to be a really good investment. I also switched in part to the Headphone jack, and extra RAM. I do like he the phone so far, and found the camera to be on par with my HTC phone if not a bit better. The only complaint I have is I find the speaker , and vibration quite weak as compared to my HTC. In the end, the specs are quite good for the price
I've been a 2XL owner since January and I just bought the 6.
The 6 has a much worse vibration motor than the 2XL; to me at least, it is a huge difference and I really dislike the feel of the motor on the 6.
Colours/screen however, looks better to me on the 6, despite having a lower resolution - colours are more vibrant and no screen issues that many users report on the 2XL.
Performance is better on the 6 and that is a bit obvious I know, but I was shocked at the difference - it's actually noticable! Apps launch insanely fast while the 2XL is still stuck on that same app's splash screen.
The camera is not great at all in my opinion (on the 6). I could even go as far as saying it's slightly below average. Maybe it's because the Pixel's camera has spoiled me. You mentioned this isn't an important thing to you so you should be fine in this department.
I have all Bluetooth accessories, including headphones, so a headphone jack isn't necessary for me, but for your needs, it seems like another plus! (No pun intended lol).
Not sure if custom development (ROMs, kernels, etc.) are important, but OnePlus should have a lot more of that than the Pixels.
And finally, the biggest "feature" is the price - OnePlus is the clear winner here as well (especially for what you get in return).
I hope this helps make your decision a bit more clear
I'm using pixel 2 XL as my primary phone and this device as my secondary phone.
I'll never keep one plus 6 as my primary device cos I'm into photography. The only reason I have this for dash charging and dual SIM. Also I'm a digital nomad and I carry multiple devices. I retired my LG G4 which was an excellent shooter and was my back up device, now that's been replaced with one plus 6.
The extra specs and Ram doesn't really scream performance when you pit it against pixel 2 XL. One plus reduces all the animations to make the device faster but it doesn't have a very noticeable performance than my pixel.
I'm not bothered with the notch.
If you have the budget do both and you'll be happy. Else get this device and play around with both and sell what you think doesn't work for you.
My pixel is very dear to me so I would never think of replacing it with any other device. Also with one plus you lose the water proof thinge!!

The only complaint I have is I find the speaker , and vibration quite weak as compared to my HTC. In the end, the specs are quite good for the price

I can see how the speaker and vibration could be bothersome. I love my Pixel 2 XL speakers, but I don't get to use them much because I'm at work or out a lot, and headphones would definitely come in handy. I have some Bluetooth headphones, but I have a lot more regular headphones that I have in my backpack, laying around at work, etc. It definitely seems worth the price!

It definitely helps! I've seen plenty of reviews where the reviewers say that the Pixel is faster. I'm not saying mine is slow, but it definitely hangs on some apps and I just have a hard time believing that the newest processor plus more ram isn't going to be faster than last years with less ram.
You've made great points, I hadn't thought about the screen. I definitely could see how the OnePlus 6 has a better screen! Thanks for your input, it's definitely been helpful

I love my Pixel, and I think I'll want the Pixel 3 when it comes out. But price wise for now, it's either sticking with the Pixel 2 XL or going to the OnePlus 6 for a wash. But I hadn't thought using both to see which I like better. I guess I could always return it within the 15 days if I don't like it right?
I sold my 2 XL a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of the OnePlus 6. I loved my 2 XL but personally found it just slightly too tall and I just couldn't get used to the screen. Even with "Boosted" and "Saturated" color calibrations the 2 XL screen paled in comparison with my wife's Galaxy S9 and my iPhone X (for work).
As for the camera, the 2 XL notably outshines the iPhone X in almost all conditions. Surprisingly, the pictures from my OnePlus 6 really are not that far off from my 2 XL. The OP6 still outperforms the iPhone X camera with much more clear and color accurate photos.
I loved my 2 XL, overall. But the iPhone X really showed me what a well designed bezel-less phone should be. The OP6 is Android's best alternative to that, IMO. The notch never bothered me on my iPhone and it doesn't bother me on my OP6. I'd make the same switch again in a heartbeat. And the best part is that I sold my 2 XL on Swappa for $710. This allowed me to pickup the OP6 (8GB / 128GB), the Nylon Bumper Case + screen protector and still pocket nearly $100.

I have both and agree with everything you've said. My biggest disappointment with the OnePlus 6 is the speaker. It's awful. I don't know if I'm going to keep the OnePlus 6. It is substantially faster than the Pixel.
Switch. I had the 2 XL, S9+, 5T before this. Camera is good but nowhere near the Pixel (neither are the S9+ or 5T), but if that's not your primary focus you'll be happy with the 6 until the Pixel 3 comes out. You'll probably have better resell value than your 2 XL too.
I am so torn. I have both phones and have about another week to decide if I'm keeping the OnePlus 6. Even though I have cases on both I just saw this guy who did a drop test and completely shattered the OP6.
Sound on Pixel 2 much better. Speed on OnePlus better.
So difficult to choose. Any ideas?
People are down playing how bad the camera is. It's 2x worst vs most of phones listed above. Software hopefully will help it.
Speaker is not great for occasional usage. Few things missing in software.
Luckily OnePlus holds there value. especially next few weeks plus 15 return window to try out.
Phone is very fast and ultimately stock Android. Haven't had any issues with day to day usage. Think it's a decent upgrade till the pixel 3 comes out.
Sold my 2xl an hour's to the money back I paid for this op6 and I already miss it ?

What about it do you miss?
Don't choose the OP6 over the 2XL. It's a big downgrade, from the camera to the screen resolution to the terrible speaker to the vibration motor.

The design, the camera, and the fact that it's pure Android ?

Only thing I haters about both phones is that there is no wireless charging ? but the OnePlus gestures are terrific
Much prefer my OP6 over my pixel 2 xl.

Why? I'm still waffling.
I love the screen, the speed is unmatched, and the form factor is more pleasant to hold. Also a big fan of the nav system in Oxygen OS.

I disagree that it's 2x worst most phones. It's not even 2x worse than most flagships. I've seen several pics where it outshines the iPhone x or s9. The problem, in my eyes, is consistency. I'll take 4 pics and get 4 different results. 3 of them will be over-sharpened so much there is noticeable halos if you zoom in, etc. But it *can* take good pics, which leads me to believe with software (or Gcam!!!), we'll be money.
Also, the video is above average for sure. Once they get the focus hunting dealt with that is.

I completely agree with you about the speed and form factor. My biggest hesitation is the speaker and volume.
I've heard conflicting things about whether it can be improved with a software patch or if we're stuck with a hardware problem.
I don't use the phone as a loud speaker, I have Google home devices as well as Bluetooth speakers. That said it's plenty loud enough for me to play games or watch videos.

Anyone switch from Brand S?

Has anyone switched from an S8 or S9, regular or plus, to the 12+? If so, what were your deciding factors? Any regrets?
I'm a longtime HTC fan or I wouldn't be in these forums. 9yrs and 4 phones later, my 10's battery is on it last leg (getting the sudden shutdowns... Started a couple of months ago at 15% battery remaining, now it's up to 50%... Literally getting under 30mins SOT).
Anyway, I really, really want to buy a 12+ and love it, just like my past HTC phones. However, I've read and watched the same negative reviews as you all, and I've seen the overwhelming "no issues here" reports on this forum.
My problem is that I've tested an S9+ in a couple of different stores, and it is a really nice device. But my holdup on buying one is twofold - first, I'm in the US and the Snapdragon ROM forums for the S9/8/7 seem pretty bleak. And second, as I said, I don't want to have the same thing as everyone else and I really love my HTC phones.
Just wondering if anyone had used a recent Samsung flagship and switched.
Mark
So, given that it's a 99.9% certainty that I'm going to end up with a U12+, let me rephrase the question a bit...
For those that own or have used a Note 8 or S8/S9 or S9+, what do you like better about the U12+?
My note 8 is a piece of ****ing garbage and I hate the entire Samsung brand now. The software is an utter abomination. I could go over the very long list of reason why this phone sucks but I'll spare you. And there's no bootloader unlock for snapdragons, so it will never be able to improve. I've ordered my HTC u12 and it's on its way. My u11 that was stolen was tenfold a better phone than this note 8 ever could be.
What did I like better about all my previous HTCs? Software, and custom ROM development support. Even completely stock OEM software my u11 took a **** on this note 8, my u11 had a better camera, it had more customization options, and edge sense was very nice after setting it up. For a 1k price tag my note 8 left everything to be desired.
Thanks, I appreciate the comments. It confirms what I thought I already knew. I kind of figured the "aftermarket" support for the Sammy would be limited, and I've always heard they are among the hardest to root. The S9+ was a nice phone, but I have zero doubt that the 12+ will be just as nice... Options are limited for no notch and SD card support.
I did good with my 10... I made it 6 months before my ORD came back and I had to root and start flashing. I'm guessing the same will be true with the 12+... I won't be able to let it stay stock forever, and I do love the ROM support I've enjoyed over the years with my HTC phones. I think I just closed that remaining 0.01% in favor of ordering the 12+.
From HTC U12+ to Samsung S10+?
Has anyone who owns the HTC U12+ switched to the new Samsung S10 or S10+? Would like to hear this experience.
I have both, U12+ and S10. Samsung G9730 is faster, with better screen and is very comfortable in hand. With working VoLTE, VoWiFi and ViLTE out of the box.

Don't forget that S10 is 2019 smartphone with SD 855 CPU, HTC is 2018 with SD845CPU

Yes and the speed difference is probably barely noticeable. The reason HTC has always been the best is cause their performance was always the best with no degradation. I never even have to reboot any of my HTC phones. And the freedom of unlocked bootloader.
I swore to myself I would never buy a crapsung phone but with no news from HTC and wanting to get my mom a great, Verizon compatible phone, I thought I would give it a shot. With the BOGO deal I'm only paying $500 a piece for the S10+.
