Hi everyone,
im getting my Z3 in a few days. I was using xperia s for more than 4 years. It still had great support thanks to mickybart that phone is on naosp 7.1.1 nougat.
Now with the z3 i would like to know which official rom is the best to use. i think i dont want to go custom rom this time and stay with official. for a year or until im bored with official.
what i already read in this forum is:
* Android 5.1.1 firmware .264 - exploits beware, 2 years old already!!!
* Android 6.0.1 firmware .291 - battery gone bye bye (no more Stamina since Google forced their Doze)
* Android 7.0 DP4 (this one) - better battery (Doze improved) but reboots at random (fixed in DP5 but that was not released for Z3)
* Android 6.0.1 Concept firmware .3657 - better battery (still not as good as 5.1.1), no root on LockedBootloader, newest software for Z3 (kernel compiled Oct 2016!!!)

Since you seem to want root I would personally go for a Stock .291 based custom ROM. For example I was able to include Stamina Mode from XZ in my latest version of Fragment ROM with help from RXS and Team Duality so you could get your desired features this way.
Lots available here from talented devs and since MM was released a while ago they are all stable in features.
Alternatively if you want stock stock then definitely use the latest anyway. .291. Battery isn't awful and its definitely the most defined MM version.
Idk why people like using older android versions. Battery shouldn't matter when you'll have at the least 24 hrs usage and get tonnes more features.
If you get adventurous I highly recommend unlocking the BL and flashing a custom N ROM as they are very stable now for Z3. The only difference I noticed was my MM ROM was much more "zippy" in the UI than the N ROMs but I'm not sure what the cause is. It doesn't affect usage though in any way.
Ok thanks. I will start with the latest .291 and if im bored or unhappy with it i will check your Fragment Rom.
I would say .291 for stock, despite being full of bloat that isn't even used anymore and older apks that were deprecated with good patience you can make a really good clean of the OS and get the phone bootin' in less than 40secs. But from my personal opinion I would unlock the bootloader and move on to (my builds of) LineageOS. It's pretty much a lightweight OS with sony apps support and full device support (only hw encryption is missing, but you can still encrypt your device using sw).

That's my quote in the OP, I've said that since in my use case SoT (screen-on-time) when from >6h on LL .264 to <4h on MM .291.
Yes, it will be different in your case, but the battery hit is still too high.
Get ForceDoze (or Greenify) if you don't have root, also get Xposed+PowerNap (Stamina-inspired module) if you have root, and it will be improved, not as good as LL but anyway.

You don't use device encryption, right? That's another story... a longer to boot one.

Hi guys!
I installed yesterday Miui 8 alpha from here: http://en.miui.com/thread-295006-1-1.html
ATTENTION!
This will be locked your bootloader!
I tried the recovery image, but it didnt work. I flashed first stable miui 7 from eu.miui than got I drecly a system update to Miui 8.
Unfortunately it's still based on android 5.1.1.
Here are screenshots.
How is Battery life... SOT? Thank you!
I dont know. I didnt so much used. Now Im back to sMiui. But I think its not beter than sMiui.
I use xiaomi.eu version which doesn't lock bootloader. Everything works well...somewhat. Back camera got downgraded features (only 720p max?), front camera can still record 1080p. Battery life, SoT and RAM consumption are similar to 6.5.26. I enable the battery saver, though. Plus only some apps are allowed for full background processing. I'm sticking with it, next updates should be better.
I'm using MIUI8 for nearly 24 hours now and I'm quite satisfied. Have not recognized heavy bugs (not even small ones).
The battery life seems to be similar to MIUI7 builds and worse than CM13.1 from TeamSuperluminal, which I used over the past few months.
I've been using first version of MIUI 8 from the first day it came out, on xiaomi.eu and I haven't got any issue what so ever. I find it works well, no bugs on my type of use so far. The thing is I don't find a significant change over Miui7... Do you guys? Generally speaking. There are a few functions on sharing that are diferent but it isnt something you should worrie about to hurry up updating.
My suggestion for everyone is that if you are in Miui7 (whatever stable or dev version) dont feel you are loosing something without having version 8... it is almost an appearance thing only changes. I'm not dev so i dont actually know what changes in the inside code and stuff, just speaking over a consumer and tester view.
If there is some devs who can tell what important changes are made over I would appreciate.

what i feel is xiaomi added new theme to MIUI 7 and brand it as MIUI 8.
Nothing significant, everything same as MIUI 7.
totally agreed, i had some overheating and touch issues btw
I'll wait Miui8 on android MM for Mi4c before installing that...
Hi! Please help me out
I will receive my new Mi 4c with the Bootloader Unlocked from the re seller , Rooted and with Multi language ROM.
Do I have to unlock the bootloader with the official method (which means flashing Cina Dev ROM -to re lock the bootloader- and go on with the Xiaomi's code procedure..) or it is possible to get all things done by choosing an unofficial weekly miui.eu international ROM and install it normally from the Updater app as soon I get my device but also be able to update it every week via Updater without issues?
My problem with flashing is that I don't have my laptop and the one I have now runs win xp.
If your MI4C is rooted you can install Flashify. With Flashify you can flash TWRP. Then you can download any desired rom and install that from TWRP.
No need for a computer.... unless you brick your phone at some point.

What's your rom version.
Hi! it's been a while since I made this post and I've changed the MI4C with a Mi4... thanks anyway! Best!
I will be giving it to my mother as her first smartphone and I need to be confident it will work okay for her with minimal tech knowledge needed to fix any issue, can you recommend one?

None of them for me.
Try pure nexus ROM,very few app come out of the build and install only what you need.Very stable for me
Stock... You need stock ROM for this situation, it is the most stable and battery friendly and the least confusing. At least they could ask someone who has general familiarity with Android questions without going into menus on Res Remix or AICP or something that would confuse them.
The situation calls for simplicity, stability, and functionality... stock is the best choice. If you don't have your backup, look around here, there are plenty of tutorials on how to go back to stock.
Go with stock rom
I was also looking for a stable ROM for Moto G3 XT1541. Interesting to see all the recommendations here to stay with the stock ROM. My reason for considering a custom ROM was that I've stopped getting system updates: last was around June with Android patch security level 1 April 2017 so I've assumed no more updates are being issued. I'm not comfortable using a system that isn't getting security updates, so is a custom ROM the way to go?
(Hope this isn't considered thread hijacking, happy to post as new thread if so.)
Stock or LineageOS, as they don't have unnecessary customizations.
Well, I have owned my XT1625 for one year and four months. After countless runs with both custom Nougat and Oreo ROMs I am back on rooted stock (December -13 version) with ElementalX kernel. To put it simply, everything just works. Period. No issues with the camera or GPS. Performance is great and battery life is as good or better than any custom ROM I have tried bar none.
Guess the grass isn't always greener.
I've had a similar experience with the June, September and December 2017 stock Motorola ROMs. I've found the rooted stock ROM to be quick, and with the ElementalX kernel/EX Kernel Manager, I can tune the CPU down to not run as hot (1344 MHz or 1094 MHz/1209 MHz ) magisk 15.3 runs invisibly and stably too.
Whilst it would be nice for ElementalX to be updated to the Sept 2017 kernel code, it still runs well, and the only thing I miss - themes - is hopefully coming in the Oreo update with Substratum/Andromeda support

True that echo92! There are several other little tweaks to the UI and bars that I miss (advanced boot for one). But I enjoy being able to use my GPS or take a pic/video without it crashing. I truly hope we do see an stock Oreo update. But even if we don't I am content to stay on my current setup until I replace my phone.
I had my time with CM and Lineage ROMs but if someone wants stability and functionality the only option is the stock.
Root as noted above.
I'm on December patch but with September modem, with December my phone remains in 3G on closed builds.
Now I'm with 4G all day.

To flash magisk on stock I think you need a custom kernel like ElementalX. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup. only "stable" way to root is by flashing a different kernel.
Also came back full circle and agree that it's sadly the only way to get a fully functional phone. Additional features can be added through xposed but it breaks some vital apps for me. So it's #Stock+Root all the way for me.

As DECHTECH and halifage have mentioned, you need a custom kernel or a reliable way to disable DM verity on the stock kernel to flash magisk. Else, if you try to flash magisk onto an unmodified stock Motorola kernel, you'll trip the anti rooting protections and cause a bootloop.
The straightforward way is to flash ElementalX v 1.04 kernel in TWRP (or the vegito kernel) before flashing magisk or SuperSU. Here's a general procedure if you want a guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72496111&postcount=270. It is a bit old, but the general steps have worked on stock ROMs up to December 2017 in my experience. Of course, if you've already unlocked, no need to do it again
I don't know if you could use magisk (at least v14/15) to patch the stock boot kernel to remove DM verity, and so be able to root on a modified stock kernel, something to try. However, ElementalX and vegito give you plenty of options to tune your device if you do wish to, which the stock kernel may not provide. As always before flashing anything, make a backup in TWRP.

Ok, thanks a lot.
I've unlocked, but when the update stock come out in December I put everything back to stock wit locked bootloader.
Now I suppose I would loose all my data...
I think this thread is answering my question, but I just got an XT1625 (non-Amazon) with Marshmallow on it. As soon as I fired it up, I had the OTA update notification for Nougat. Rather than upgrading, I just went ahead and unlocked and rooted because it seemed much easier on 6 than 7. Sounds like this may have been the right call, but am I missing out on anything by keeping MM?
For everyone who is reverting to stock due to issues on custom ROMs: I'm currently running AICP Nougat paired with the Vegito Kernel and rooted, but I have ZERO bugs, the ROM is super smooth and battery life is awesome. Everything seems to just work.
I ponder as to what issues people have on custom roms. Oreo has some issues but most nougat LOS and AOSP based ROMS work fine without small issues, at least for me on my XT1642.

My main issue with the custom ROMS is battery life. I ran AICP for a couple of months and it was one of the most stable. But stock still provides me better battery life. The issues I have had with various Nougat Custom ROMs are related to performance when gaming, cameras not working 100%, losing access to some of the apps I run, and, as mentioned, battery life. Not all of them have all of these issues but they all have at least one. Since I can get the access to all of my apps and what I want to customize and modify through my current setup as well as the best battery life I will stick to it.
As I said in my initial post, it is not a decision I made lightly. Only after trying almost every custom Nougat ROM and 3 different Oreo ROMs did I come back to Stock. It was a 16 month journey. In all fairness, in the beginning I got better battery life on the custom ROMs. But that is not the case with the latest available stock.
In comparison, on my Samsung T813 Galaxy S2 Tablet, the custom ROM I use blows stock out of the water with all features.
CM14.1 builds had better battery life compared to LineageOS and Oreo based custom roms. That's what I observed over more then one year.
Proof: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4Zy8uoEfFKLLXF4VkVJNHlOdTQ that was cm-14.1-20161224-NIGHTLY-athene.zip

It could be better than Lineage and Oreo based ROMs. I just don't think it is better than the current setup I am now running. What is the latest version of CM currently available? Late 2016. In my book that makes it dead for newer devices. The code in Lineage is essentially CM and any pure CM is outdated as far as security and features.

True. But I have seen no proof that CM battery life is better than what I am now getting now with the latest stock/ElementalX setup. In fact I do not recall ever getting better than about 1.8% drain per hour overall with CM. I am currently getting 1.1% drain per hour overall.
Also, I can't access your link because I don't have the permissions.

Just got a spare Z3, and since this device has been quite inactive on developments and such, the most preferred route is to stay stock for stability.
Now, I looked on our Android Development section and there seems to have a couple of stock-based ROMs which are good, and now, even in 2018, I was wondering what stock-based ROMs you guys are still using?
Any bias comments are welcome as long as it's spoken through experience. Also, a combination of Stock-based ROM a Custom Kernel would be nice to hear as well, if you use those.
Thanks guys for noticing~

Any ways to use cyberian camera on carbon oreo? Right now im using existenz on my z3c, everything is ok and it has tones of customizations i can recommend for z3 too. But the best rom for battery is still slimm rom. Whatever lets turn back to my question, only because it is not possible use cyberian cam on carbon oreo i will go for carbon nougat with xperia ui. Can you share your experience with snapdragon camera if you use oreo version?
i have djust used the default camera app that came preinstalled with the rom. as 3rd party apps arent as good as stock. And its really good enough.
and i dont like to use outdated roms still on 6.0 M

Not many custom ROMs being updated now but Lightrom is debloated and very near stock. Forget about good battery life there's lots of things affecting it so there no perfect answer
I've been using the LineageOS 16.0 ROM for some time, it updates regularly. But being LineageOS it's not a ROM for you if you like the Samsung experience and apps.
