Turn this off
Your screen will then not turn on automatically

I will try this. Thanks

It has nothing to do with any of those options, I have easy turn on off and 'keep screen turned off' on. And I have been getting this for ages. I brought this up a few weeks ago. It seems to have been introduced in one of the firmwares since it never used to do this when it was released. I can only assume the geniuses at Samsung have added this as a "feature" and not bothered to provide an option to turn it on and off. Or it is a pretty big bug they have introduced and not fixed. It has been driving me mad as I often take the phone out to quickly check the time and/or notifications and then put it back in my pocket....and since it has turned the screen on it then starts touching the screen in my pocket.

@ewokuk,
Yup, same thing here.....

I would say it's most likely a bug in Software.?
Not a possible "feature" as you put it in your post
or otherwise it could be proximity sensor issue ?
I don't have this issue eg phone waking /taking phone from pocket. etc.
After reading your post, I have tried to recreate /tested
your issue. Over and over again.
Phone does not "wake" up.
I have latest software on phone.
Not rooted.
I don't use any lockscreen.
I have an UAG flip case (to protect screen)
I do leave my AOD on during day.
I have notice that AOD sometimes brightens/adjust
to the light but does not wake device.
(but this response is understandable)
Good luck

I'd be willing to bet just about anything that you're either somehow long-pressing the home button or your're accidentally pressing a hardware button when you're pulling the phone out. Between the settings mentioned above and these possibilities, that's really all there is. The phone can't turn the screen on arbitrarily unless maybe there's a rogue app doing some fun things with wakelocks.

Nope. I am pulling the phone out by the edges, there is no opportunity to press the screen, the fingerprint scanner or any of the buttons near the top of it. As already stated, those options are already set to avoid it turning the screen on (and are not related to what this is doing anyway). I can't see it being a rogue app, I don't have many apps installed, and have disabled the bloaty ones.
For reference:
AoD is always on, with just the clock showing, no facewidgets etc
Easy screen turn on is OFF
Keep screen turned off is ON
Unlock methods are set to pin, iris or fingerprint.
and for the record, the home button is set to require maximum pressure to activate.
When taking the phone out of my pocket, a lot of the time (but not every time, and it sems to need to be in my pocket for a while before it happens, it won't do it if it has only been in there for a few seconds) it starts trying to scan for irises as if the home button or power button has been pressed (when they have not). It seems like the proximity sensor is detecting it has been taken out of a pocket and starts looking for irises. It feels like a feature because I could imagine samsung thinking it was a good idea to have it scan for irises when taking it out of a pocket in order to help people unlock it quicker and without even needing to press anything at all. It is either that or a bug somewhere. I am going to turn off iris scanning now and see what that does, if the issue is related to iris scannign somehow then the issue should go away, if it is not related then I expect to get the pin entry screen instead.

That's interesting. I almost wonder if there's a hardware problem, since you mentioned the iris scanner engages sometimes. I hate phone resets more than most things in life, but have you tried that?

No not tried reset and will not be doing that at least until O comes out. Doesnt seem like a hardware problem. So far (in the last 20 mins which doesnt really prove anything yet) with iris scanner turned off it has not turned the screen on when taking it out. Will need more testing to be sure but at the moment seems iris scanner related somehow (bug or 'feature').

Keep us posted. I use fingerprint and the facial recognition for unlock, so maybe that's why I haven't experienced it.

Thanks for the info, if you can locate this setting please include a screenshot - I was not aware of this setting.

You sure you're not pinching the soft home button? That area is designed to wake up the screen if you press it.
Settings -> Display -> Navigation Bar
Turn off "Hard press Home button"
edit: er, scratch that.. Looks like that's not available on the S8 yet.. lol.

My S6 likes to turn itself on when in my pocket. I have to use Pattern Unlock to prevent it.

My problem is confirmed. It's swiping/ holding the home button that's doing it for me thanks. Felt dumb but still there is nothing I saw that says that as a feature and i have yet to be able to turn it off.

The invisible pressure sensitive home button area is a feature. Like the previous physical home button there's nothing that turns it off.

Multiple (growing) issues, rendering phone unusable

I've had my captivate since launch, I've played around with roms a bit, but I recently (about 2 months ago) put stock 2.3 on and have left it at that. Every once in awhile my power button wouldn't work properly (instead of putting it to sleep it would just bring up the power menu). At first this happened once or twice before I could get it to just go to sleep and then eventually this week it started taking me 40-50 presses to get it to go to sleep instead of bringing up the power menu.
Now the power button does not work at all. I can turn the phone on and off by putting the battery out and in, but once the screen goes to sleep, I am SOL. Interestingly the same day it finally called it quits, about an hour before I restarted the phone (because it was starting to get really bad) and it came up as Jan 1st 2005, 12:00 a.m. I set the date manually, but it will not fix the time no matter what I do.
Because I have had the phone so long, I am assuming whatever flimsy warranty I had is long gone, and on top of that I'm currently in the UK until mid Dec at the very earliest.
Am I basically just screwed? Should I just ebay a crap phone for now? I know I have read that this is probably a hardware issue (the date thing makes me think otherwise), but I really don't have the extra cash to buy a soldering iron, nor the time to teach myself to solder again (it's been atleast 12 years or so since I've touched one, and I never had much practice with one).
Is it worth flashing back to 2.1 to see if that helps? I know there are some issues with flashing from 2.3 to 2.1, something involving changing the bootloaders back first or something?
I want to take the phone apart and try to clean the contacts as well, but I currently can't find an eyeglass screwdriver. It is unfortunate that that seems to be my best bet at the moment, unless does anyone have an ideas?
Try shooting compress air into the area around the power button. Also take the back cover off and blue out as much dust as you can. It's a long shot, but it might work.

He has a point. It almost sounds like the dust around the Iphone home button issue. It might bring it back to life or you may be in the same boat.
Good idea. But with electronics, most of the time you don't want to just blow air into it.you want to take it apart and clean it. Blowing air sometime can cause other problems(just moving the dust/dirt around)

So I took out the 6 screws on the captivate...but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get into the phone. Also the bottom two screws that are kind of under the sliding bottom, is there a trick to getting those out? Is there a video posted anywhere?
This is getting incredibly frustrating, and I need this phone to at least last me until late December when I go back to the states.
I'd try and flash back to stock just to see if that has any effect, but I'm too scared that without the power button I'd just end up getting stuck. I can't boot into recovery either, I don't know why though.
there is a "how to" for getting in the captivate, in the forumscalled "captivate tear down" from what i remember.
Thanks a lot, that sorted me out.
Unfortunately...
I cleaned everything and there has been no change.
This my current status (if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them, as this is getting painfully annoying and my battery life is understandably awful). The phone turns on if I put the battery into it (is this normal behavior? I don't think it is, so I am a bit curious about that). The power button is completely useless, it does nothing. The volume rocker works fine. If I know I am going to be using the phone I set the screen timeout to 10 minutes (annoying that there is no 5 minute option). If I want the screen to turn on I have 3 options, listed from most practical to least:
1)Plug in the usb cable either to a power source or my computer. This works, but obviously not if I am out and about. The other end has to be plugged into something.
2)Get an sms (or mms I suppose) text (whatsapp, gchat, aim, email, etc. does not work) from someone and very quickly pull the phone from my pocket and hit the unlock code before it times out (like 3 seconds or something?)
3)Pop the battery in and out. This works at any time obviously with two huge caveats. 1) Once in awhile it resets the phones status to Jan 1st 2005, and it won't for hours or over a day reupdate the time automatically, setting it manually kind of works, but it seems to cause a lot of problems. and 2) it's really annoying waiting for it to start up again, and doing this multiple times completely kills the battery.
The fact that cleaning out the phone didn't help (and coupled with the battery thing and the resetting to Jan 1st) is making me think that this is not a hardware issue.
Anyone have any more suggestions on what to try? Again for the record I am running "stock" 2.3.
If you flash a miui/cm7 rom, i believe there is an option to use the volume buttons to wake the screen. I know it's an option on cm7, though can't remember if it's on MIUI (I'll look through my settings after this).
As for the actual flashing process, you can set up adb and use it to get into recovery if you don't have any other means to do it without the power button atm.
Edit: yep you can do it in miui. Here's a picture of it under settings > system > button settings

Not the most preferable option, but thanks I will definitely look into doing that. I'll try and get adb set up this weekend. Good suggestion, I appreciate it.

No problem. Adb is actually really easy to set up. I avoided it for so long because I thought it was a hassle. There's also a toggle you can add to the pulldown in miui/cm7 that locks the screen when you press it

A search on Google shows the power button issue is a more common one than imagined:
On the software side, it is a rogue app that is set to worng settings: Try and undo the last app you installed. e.g advanced task manager.
e.g http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...ve-power-button-unable-get-out-standby-4.html
These forums here says it is a camera app problem......and suggests a fix:

But it requires you being able to get into the camera app.
IT ALSO HAPPENS ON DROID:

A widget solution:

I want to say that it's probably just suffering from "old phone" syndrome. Especially if you haven't gotten a replacement unit.

Lockscreen restarts on its own

I have tried looking everywhere for an answer and have had no luck. Every time I push the power button to lock screen or turn off the display, the lock screen reboots.. Also when I let the screen timeout, it will keep turning itself back on. I have tried diffent Roms as well. I am at a loss. Any help is appreciated.

I've never heard of this problem before but there is a simple solution, getting another lock screen.
There is an application called "No Lock" that gives you the ability to disable your current lockscreen. The lockscreen replacement I use is called "WidgetLocker" and its amazing. The latter isn't a free application but i'm sure there is a homescreen replacement on the market that is free. Hope that helps somewhat.
Might be a HW problem of some kind, that's keeping your phone awake.
Try looking at the logcat, seeing what lines do you get after you press the power button to sleep.
Try some more ROMs to see if you can install something that doesn't have this behavior.
Hey I know this is old but I have the same problem. When I press the power button the screen turns off and then instantly pops back to the lock screen. I tried screen off widgets and the same thing happens. But I found a solution, not sure how long it will work. When that lock screen pops up I press down the trackpad and it turns off the screen. Is this normal?

Just in case anyone has the same problem, trying flashing a custom rom. I tried an ICS and also the AOKP jellybean and it took care of the problem. The screen still flickers on, but rarely, and then turns off. I noticed that these roms do not use the trackpad to wake the phone anymore. Leads me to believe the trackpad is defective and keeps the screen awake.
yea the trackpad is kind of an issue apparently..! i really wish it could wake the phone

Is there a way to disable the trackpad?an .apk or something?
finally solve it.....install CM7....there's an option to disable trackpad wake

An app to turn off the screen WITHOUT locking.

Hi All,
I was hoping you guy might be able to help me out.
The LG G3 is awesome, i love being able to turn the screen on and off without using any buttons.
One bit that i think could use some work is that currently, when the screen is on, you can tap the notification bar twice to turn the screen off, however, i find that this doesnt work so well all the time.
I have Nova launcher and i wanted to link a two finger swipe gesture with an app to turn the screen off however...
All the apps on the store only seem to offer you the option to turn the screen off and lock the phone immediately at the same time. Does anyone know of an app that will let me turn the screen off, but NOT lock the phone immediately, and just leave the lock settings to the system defaults.
It seems pretty straight forward but i've tried about 30 apps on the store and all of them only screen off and lock, none allow you to do it without locking the phone immediately.
Any help would be really appreciated!

You could try an app like Button Savior. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey.nonroot
It has the option to swipe from the side to bring up the buttons, and from what I understand, the power button on it is exactly the same action as pressing the power button on your phone. You could tweak it to try and get it to the solution you want, but I think at least the button should be what you are looking for.

My phone seems to do the same action either way. I think I know what you are talking about. It seems that on previous roms, the screen could go dark, but if I woke the phone back up it wasn't actually locked. What about this app? It seems to distinguish between the two.

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion... The problem with that app is that the phone won't lock until I go back in and disable it... I want the phone to use the same system timeout so if I do leave my phone lying around it will lock after 3 or 5 minutes on its own.

Take this.
Note: Needs Root
Not sure it it covers your needs, but I'm using SkipLock combined with Gravity Screen
SkipLock let's you bypass the lockscreen (and pincode) when your phone is connected to either a trusted WIFI network or a trusted BT-device (carkit!).
As soon as you get home you'll turn on your screen and you the lockscreen as usual, but from that point on it's lockscreen free until it disconnects with your wifi network.
So when you turn off the screen the screen goes black, but as soon as you turn it on again you'll see either the homescreen or your last opened app.
It works really GREAT!
Gravity screen is not needed but makes it even easier. It automatically turns your screen on when you pick up the phone, and turns it off when you place it down (configurable). It also features Pocket Mode so it will turn the screen off when you put it in your pocket and on again when you take it out. Worst part was getting used to NOT press the power-button anymore

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion - i just tried the app and it has a non-root version, but that just basically turns the screen black, leaves the notification bar and navi buttons and doesnt actuall replicate pressing the power button.
I cant root my phone either as i need to use banking apps and these dont work with root.
Any other ideas?

This sounds like a cool set of apps, but I'm quite pedantic about my phone and the way it uses battery and with all the sensors working. I'm not sure its right for me, but its cool none-the-less.

Skiplock doesn't use up any battery. Gravity MIGHT, but there are options to choose that use up more or less battery.
Don't know about needing root though...
Hi, I have been looking for this too....no solution? I use the trusted places and devices to keep my phone unlocked when i am home, and when in the car (connected to bluetooth) but of course turning off the screen also locks it.
SkipLock isn't compatible with my Lollipop G3 - any solutions that work on Lollipop? I've been using Tasker but somethings it messes up things a bit so I would like to try something else

[HELP] Nexus 5's Screen Goes Blank After Boot, Even After Restore

Hey everyone,
I need a little bit of help. My Nexus is having a bit of an issue. I've looked around but can't seem to find anything similar.
The phone boots completely, shows the boot animation, shows the lockscreen with notifications. I can drag down the notification bar, turn on WiFi etc with no issue. As soon as I either unlock it or click on settings, the screen goes completely blank. Safe Mode does not seem to make any difference.
I've done a Factory Reset using Recovery mode and now after booting it shows the Language options for setup and the screen once again turn off. Pressing the power button after that gives a clicking sound but no picture. I've uploaded a video here https://gfycat.com/PoliteCommonAmmonite
Any clue what I am supposed to do?
Thanks for your help!
Variant - hammerhead D820 16GB
HW Version - rev_11
Bootloader - HHZ10x
Signing - production
Secure boot - enabled
Lock state - locked
Has no one encountered this issue before ? I'm very rusty Android-wise and haven't had much chance playing with Nexus devices.
maybe hardware issue

I have similar problem.. turn on n5 and when not moving it works fine, I can get the phone on,
The screen flickers and goes dark or touch won't work are some occurrences. Phone still works ie gets sms and etc. With research for a few weeks. Seems that it's not software related but hardware related. I am hoping it is a flex cable problem or a loose cable problem which is cheapest. If a screen replacement is needed then it's not worth the work. Just buy a new phone. I got mine secondhand at a way cheaper price. Too bad cuz I like it it's nice enough for me.

I'm fairly certain this is software related as :
1. The screen plays the turn off animation (a-la old CRT TV) when it turns off
2. The screen turns off at the same time everytime it is rebooted (and before the reset would stay on until the screen was unlocked)
3. The power button still works to reboot the phone.
Hardware or software

To make sure it is not indeed a hardware problem we should perform a sort of "hard reset" (not to be confused with button combinations to reset the devices software) . Turn off the device if it is on. Take off the back cover, remove the six silver screws holding the plate over the motherboard. Once that is off you should firstly lift the battery flex cable up gently. (see sample pic) With doing this we ensure that all power is gone and no other components will be shorted. The idea here is lifting and reconnecting the the flex cables and wires to make sure everything is really how it should be. (resetting them all) Basically tearing it down. I would just unplug the battery and then unscrew the four screws at the bottom to access the LCD flex cable underneath the speaker. Lift and re seat the LCD connector and reassemble the phone (battery being last thing re seated)
It doesn't hurt to try this method to rule out the hardware side. If you don't know how or need help PLEASE contact me first for advice so you don't end up with a broken Nexus 5.
What will Hard reset rule out?

Two things.
1. question if done this process and the problem still comes back what does that rule out? If the problem does not come back then the problem was hardware?
2. I did reseating but did not reseat one cable or maybe all of the flex able connectors and the battery was still in place. and it was not connected last, rather it was first i just took connectors on and off and did not want to mess with the black wire as it was very thin and small.
Result of #2 was that the problem went away for a while, seemed to "help" but did not fix it completely.
unlock ur bootloader ! flash a rom and install any kernel which supports colour profiles like Elementalx flash then open kerrnel manager and change the colour profile to vomer_amoled if u like it! or back to stock!
Alright so I've done so far :
Reinstalled stock from scratch (Still the same issue)
Unlocked bootloader
Installed TWRP ( I can play around in TWRP with no issue whatsoever, screen doesn't go off)
Sideloaded Pure Nexus, GApps and blu_spark91 kernel
Tried scraping all of that and going with CWM and CM, still no dice (although the sound is different!)
STILL THE SAME #!&%$ ISSUE. But now I can select the language. When I click the yellow arrow, I get that same issue where I can't turn the screen back on. The power button still plays the lock/unlock sound through the speaker.
I should also mention the power button works perfectly when using TWRP or CWM.
I have no clue what the hell I am supposed to do now..... Please help. I've never opened the phone myself.
Hello, I would like to suggest a hardware cleaning of the power button. It may or may not help, but I assume you would like to try something different to remedy the issue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doPuXkQTGbc
The video shows how to remove the motherboard in order to clean the power button.
I had done this on another Nexus 5 that turned off randomly. I didn't want to replace the power button but cleaning it removed the problem for me.

Keep screen turned off

Hi
I have owned this phone for about 1 month now and haven't got round to testing all of its features yet. I recently tried the keep screen turned off setting but it doesn't seem to do anything. Perhaps it's broken or something. Proximity sensor seems okay and auto brightness works.
Any ideas?
Keep screen turned off is only to make sure that when your phone is in your pocket or bag and the home/lock button accidentally gets pressed the screen turns off straight away to conserve battery.

Yes that's right. But when I activate this setting my screen will still turn on and stay on when in my pocket, bag, any other dark place.
Has anyone else got this problem. Is there anyway of fixing it. Btw I have tried factory reset twice to no avail
Thanks
I have same problem and my friend with s6 have same. Its all about android 7 on Samsung.

I have the exact same problem, here's my quote from another thread:
I have a similar problem. The proximity sensor itself works flawlessly during calls and in the test menu, but even though I have the "don't wake up in pocket" enabled in the screen settings, it always wakes and turns the screen on (and starts to make accidental clicks) when in pocket and the home button is accidentally pressed by my leg/pocket. I made a factory reset which didn't help. I don't use Package Disabler Pro, so that shouldn't cause the issue. Any help on this?
