Can one access or use the underyling linux O/S in an Android device?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting what I've read, but my understanding is that Android "O/S's" are a VM (via Dalvik?) that runs within a pared down linux O/S. Assuming that's not too far off, is it possible to add packages or programs to that Linux O/S? Could I, for example, add regular old Wireshark to it? Obviously the programs would have to be compiled for the correct cpu platform.
Thanks.
The kernel is Linux one... As for your question, provided you have rooted your phone, you can create a chroot there and run Linux apps on your phone.

[q] request linux support

Android being linux based i have to look out for windows for tweaking the phone.
For example
1. Android language project is windows based
2.real apk leecher also windows based
3. Root with bin4ry also windows based
4. Sp tools also WINDOWS based .
Please make Linux based programs in Gui so that we don't have to switch to windows for a few programs for operating on android which is a Linux kernel.
I find it very tedious.
Please make it asap so that we can keep with Ubuntu only.
Cwm recovery also we should be able to flash it from Ubuntu.
Using wine doesnt perfectly work on usb interface and does not give required results.
Please do this urgently.
Make it all in Linux why depending on windows whats the point.
While it would be great to get more Linux support you have to realize most people have Windows and are not going to install Linux just to take advantage of these tools. Also most developers are most familiar with Windows and even if they do have the Linux knowledge they probably don't have the time to develop and test on two platforms.

[Q] TF101 & Arch Linux, does it work?

Hi all,
Is there any info available about installing Arch Linux (ARMv6?) on a TF101?
I see their are Ubuntu-roms available, but it is possible to get this to work on Arch Linux?
Thanks.

The main issue is the kernel. The latest kernel is the "Rootbind" kernel which I have developed, see this thread, post #3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347581
This kernel should work irrespective of the Linux distro you are using.
Then you need a root filesystem for your Linux distribution. This you need to extract into /data/linuxroot under Android. It involves a bit of manual command line stuff, but if you want to install Arch I assume you won't be put off by that
I believe some people have gotten Arch to work on our TF101, although most of the threads are for Ubuntu and Debian. Search this forum, I can see no reason why it shouldn't work. Also, if you have an Arch Linux port for ARMv7 with hard float (armhf) this will be faster than ARMv6. Other than that I can't really help as I haven't used Arch myself.

linux deploy or linux complete installer help

Good day everyone, have been trying to run linux on this device for some time now without luck , for some reason it wont let me launch any of these options. Read that I needed a permissive kernel and used Civz kernel for lollipop 5 and when using complete linux installer it just brings a gray screen with a message saying that theres no d-bus, and when I try to run linux deploy for ubuntu it fails on Vnc and ssh.
Any help really appreciated, thanks a lot.

Installing Linux to an old phone

I'm a bored tech enthusiast/programmer with an old pixel 1 phone that's just laying around. I thought it would be hilarious if I could install an arm version of a standard Linux distro like Ubuntu or Debian. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to go about it. I could try porting hallium but I'm more looking to run a desktop version just for the laughs. Can you just boot from a Linux iso with fastboot? Would fastbooting a different kernel first work? Any help appreciated (aside from "don't do that use this instead" or "just run Linux inside Android")
