Welcome to my first ever guide
The reason I am making this guide is because I've been asked a lot on how to flash back to stock via Odin and that concerns me a bit. Flashing back to stock is the FIRST thing you should ever learn how to do when it comes to modifying anything on your phone.
Not only will this be a life-saver if you accidentally modify something on your phone when you shouldn't, but also this is a great way to start from scratch if you just want a clean start with your phone.
The steps and information I'm about to share could technically work for any Samsung phone (granted you have the correct files), but I will focus mainly on flashing my Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime (SM-G532M, but could also work obviously with G532F and G532G) since it's the phone I can easily flash and re-flash over and over again and I can share step by step the process on how to do it. Also I want to keep editing this guide to add a few things that are relevant to this phone (maybe future tutorials and such) since this is a relatively new phone, there aren't many tutorials to begin with.
Also, I should warn you: This is the very first guide I ever do, so I may skip on small, maybe crucial details of this process. I am not responsible to any damage your phone suffers due to you following this tutorial/guide to flash back to stock. There is little chance something can go wrong when doing this, but you are doing it under YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
Anyway, let's begin.
What you need:
1. A PC
2. The will to use the SEARCH function or search in Google when you run into a problem that may or may not be listed in this guide
Downloads:
1. Samsung USB Drivers
2. Download the latest version of Odin
3. The latest firmware of your phone (Use google to search for it, recommended sites are Updato and Sammobile)
And now, for the tutorial:
REMINDER: This will erase/factory reset your phone. It will erase everything including media.
1. Turn your phone off
2. Enter download mode by holding the HOME button + Volume Down + Power button at the same time (hold all three together)
3. Your phone will warn you about installing custom OS and such and will ask you to either continue (press the VOL + button) or cancel (VOL - button), you want to choose "Continue"
4. You are now in Download Mode
5. Open Odin and connect your phone to your PC via USB
6. Odin should have detected your phone by showing something like 0:[COM#] in the ID:COM section
7. Unzip the firmware file you downloaded (from either Updato or Sammobile)
8. Click on BL and locate the files you unzipped, choose the BL file (should be named something like BL_G532XXXX(etc...).tar.md5
9. Do the same for AP, CP and CSC
10. Hit start and let Odin do its magic
11. After Odin is finished, it will re-start the phone, wait patiently for the phone to load up
12. You should now have your phone back safely to stock and ready for use
This is a very simple procedure, but if you feel like you missed anything or have a question, let me know.
How to root your Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime (SM-G532 F/M/G)
At the time of this guide, there are actually 3 methods to root this phone. I will not explain how to root your phone in this guide, I will only give you links on the actual guides. Please be sure to read the respective guides and make sure to give thanks to the authors
Here they are:
Guide 1: This is the very first guide that was made to root this phone. This guide, however, relies on having firmware on your phone that is outdated and will not work with newer firmware. It is simple if you have the correct firmware, however. Thanks to @hernankano for this tutorial!
Guide 2: This is another great tutorial on how to root your phone, however it's also restricted on using it on a specific firmware that is listed on the guide. It is recommended that you only attempt to root this way if you have the firmware specified on the guide since it might be incompatible with future firmware releases. Thanks to @ashyx for this tutorial!
Guide 3: This is what I consider the easiest and best way to currently (and probably ever) root your phone as it is done with a ported version of TWRP. This is the most compatible with all firmware versions! Again, thanks to @ashyx for his amazing work on porting TWRP and making this tutorial to root the phone.
If you feel we can make this guide better, please let me know to add anything that could be missing or if you have questions on procedures for this phone.
My vision is to have an all-in-one guide where everything is listed, but of course, this is barely my first guide so it might take a while to get there.
Thank you for reading.

My personal recommendation!
Turn this storage hungry piece of crap into a somewhat decent phone
Hey guys, it's been a while since I made this guide to return to stock, which is the most basic of things! Since I've made this guide, there have been a couple of interesting things going on. For one, I finally learned how to modify an updater-script for flashable ROMs and I've been very busy creating scripts to debloat this phone. I have also started seeing "ports" for the J2 Prime (finally) and tried a couple myself. They're pretty decent, but there are a couple of problems I've seen in them. For one, THEY'RE NOT DEBLOATED!. What does this mean? That these ports still have all the "crapware" that Samsung likes to shove in their phones, slowing them down and taking up so much precious space, space that this phone does not have. So I've gotten myself to work and developed three different debloat scripts that will make this phone at least decent
So here's my personal recommendation to have a decent J2 Prime with plenty of space to download lots and lots of apps
I also recommend getting an external SD card and setting it up as adoptable storage, which I will also include in this "guide"
Let's begin!
Downloads: (explanations of which one to use in the following steps)(Also, please read the original threads, they have warnings I need you to READ!)
Standard debloat script (Original thread: here)
DebloatX with S8 icons and launcher(Original thread: here)
DebloatX with just S8 launcher(Original thread: here)
* Now, I don't know how much you've been messing around with your J2 Prime, so if you follow this guide my first recommendation is that you flash stock via Odin to get this phone back to fully working stock, guide on the post above
* I will also need you to activate developer options in settings and make sure "USB Debugging" and "OEM Unlock" are enabled
* After you've flashed stock ROM and made sure that USB Debugging and OEM unlock are enabled, flash TWRP
* Then, reboot to recovery and format /data
* After that, you will now flash one of the three files I provided above. Here is a brief explanation of what each one is and does:
Standard debloat script This is the fist script I ever made. This will erase all crapware Samsung added to this phone and leave you only the essential apps. This will keep stock UI, this is NOT a custom ROM. This will give you almost 3 GB of storage free! Use this if you want the most bloat removed! (Read the warnings on the original thread)
DebloatX with S8 icons and launcher This is similiar to the standard debloat script. The difference is that this adds S8 launcher and S8 icons, as well as a few features that were added on some S8 ports. This will give you aprox. 2.5 GB of storage, it's pretty good! (Read the warnings on the original thread)
DebloatX V2 (just s8 launcher) This is the same as DebloatX only difference is that I removed S8 icons here. I did this because Samsung's email app crashes with S8 icons and it's an app I really use, so I removed s8 icons and a lot of s8 features.
* Root via the method you choose (SuperSU or Magisk)
* Flash the dm-verity zip listed on any of my tutorials
* Once you've flashed the file that you prefer, reboot your phone and normally start your phone
* The first thing you should do is remove any additional apps you might not want and that my script might not have removed
* After that, go to the Google Play and let all apps update
* Now, download an app called "Root Essentials" (you can download: here
* You should open up the app and go to "Storage"
* Follow the instructions to set up your SD card as adoptable storage
* Choose that the default app installation location be the SD card
* Start downloading all your apps
There, your phone should now be at least usable! Have fun

after i follow all the instruction, my phone not response anything. Just black screen. Is there something wrong?

No, there might be a few ROMs but I've never seen a stable custom ROM. All I can recommend is my script to remove bloat from your phone

From what I know, it COULD be possible, but you might experience small bugs like maybe WiFi working slow or bluetooth, small stuff like that.
But I wouldn't recommend it. Why are you trying to flash a G532G ROM?

i want to get "voLTE" option in my phone.
the indian version of the phone/rom(G532G) should have enhanced 4G LTE mode.
my phone (G532F) doesnt have it and that's why i want to flash it.

Hi bro
Can give me custom recovery for g532f???

I flashed successfully. G532g/ds. During first boot, everything is slow and very difficult to setup. I cant get past the welcome and wifi setup. What could be wrong? Checked autore boot and f reset time. Bl ap cp csc were all attach on odin.

If by locked you mean network lock then no, won't matter what firmware you use it will always be network locked until you unlock it with a code or with a carrier

When I successfully flash the standard debloat script, the text to speech engines was gone/uninstalled.
Some apps that I use need Accessibility Permissions, and it says that the language of the app isn't the same with the text to speech engine, and when redirected to the Text to Speech, System Settings crashes.
When I go to the Text to Speech settings page manually, it just keeps on loading and I can see that the Default Language is Chinese, and even after installing Google Text to Speech Engine, and/or Samsung Text to Speech Engine (both ways), it just keeps on loading.
I believe that the debloat script, and/or update binary script files is responsible, as I reflashed the stock ROM, rooted it, and flash no-verity-no-encrypt, and it worked just fine.
Is it also possible to not to format the data, and factory data reset the script? What would be the consequences if it didn't format and factory reset? Is it also possible to add some other apps in the script that removes applications, if so, what are the precautions and consequences?

Oh yeah, there are a couple of problems with deleting so much stuff from the phone. I honestly did this way back then when I was learning. I don't recommend it now a days. Honestly, you're better off just using stock without this script.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Question: I can't install your custom ROMs. Why? What am I doing wrong?
Answer: First of all you have to flash a custom recovery into your phone and then you are able to install my custom ROMs. Read the tutorials on post #2 to know the procedures.
Question: I wanted to try one of your custom ROMs. Will I loose all my data after installing it?
Answer: Yes, you will loose all your data... unless you create a backup to restore after installing the ROM. There are two recommended ways to create backups of your userdata:
Doing the backup under custom recovery mode: navigate to backup and restore menu.
Using Titanium Backup to create a backup of your favourite applications.
Question: Can I fully revert to factory settings?
Answer: Sure, just download the stock update.zip and install it from recovery.
Question: In phone specifications it's stated that it has 4 GB of eMMC, but only approximately 700 MB are available for internal storage... Can you explain me the reason for that?
Answer: The phone has indeed 4 GB of eMMC. Part of it is used by system and cache partitions, while the rest of the size is divided into internal storage (approximately 700 MB) and an internal sdcard partition (approximately 2 GB). If you find that an internal sdcard partition is useless (and have a big external sdcard), you can extend userdata partition (internal sdcard partition completely disabled). Jump into post #4 to learn how to apply that mod.
Question: Somehow I have got invalid IMEI numbers. How do I restore my phone's IMEI numbers?
Answer: Read this tutorial. Don't forget to say thanks to its author.
Question: Does my phone really have two IMEI numbers?
Answer: Every dual SIM smartphone based on MT65xx SoC has two IMEI numbers. Some just don't display both numbers on dialler when you type code *#06#, but if you go into Settings / About phone / Status / IMEI information you'll see the IMEI set for both slots.
Question: How can I access hidden MediaTek engineering mode?
Answer: From phone's dialler type code *#*#3646633#*#*.
Question: Are your custom ROMs patched to fix Android's master key (bugs 8219321 and 9695860) vulnerabilities?
Answer: No, but the solution to that is pretty simple:
Install Xposed framework (instructions on the support thread)
Install Master key dual fix module (instructions available also on it's support thread)
To check if system is vulnerable you can use one of the following apps:
SRT AppScanner
Bluebox Security Scanner
All credits to rovo89 for the amazing Xposed framework and also to Tungstwenty for the Master key universal fix.
Question: I don't have this phone, but mine is also based on the same MT6577 SoC. Can I still flash your recovery and install your custom ROMs?
Answer: Even though your phone is based on the same SoC, there may be differences in other hardware components. It is not likely that recovery and ROMs will work on your phone so you may risk to brick it.
Huawei U8836D internal memory re-partition
Initial notes:
Make sure that you have a full nandroid backup of your current ROM. If not, boot into recovery mode and make one. This is very important if you want to restore userdata after internal memory is re-partitioned.
Also make sure that you have a backup of your internal sdcard because it will be fully erased and disabled.
Warning: the package includes preloader, but there's no need to flash it. Make sure that your selection is according to the screenshot bellow.
Instructions:
Copy disable_internal_sdcard.zip to external sdcard (read note bellow)
Shutdown the phone
Open SP Flash Tool v3.1222.00 (or higher) and load the scatter file
Flash MBR, EBR1 and RECOVERY as shown on the next image (read flashing tutorial first):

}
After flashing is complete, boot into recovery mode and format /data
Optionally, if you want to restore previously saved userdata, go to nandroid backup / restore and restore data (advanced restore feature)
Install disable_internal_sdcard.zip file through recovery mode (read note bellow)
Reboot your phone and enjoy your extended userdata partition
Important update: All the new ROM updates which include AROMA installer also include a script to automatically disable internal sdcard if extended userdata partition is detected. Dismiss the part of the instructions that refers to the installation of disable_internal_sdcard.zip file. All the rest of the procedure is still valid and must be done before installing the ROM. That said, if you are going to apply this modification, you must re-install the ROM.
Please also note that this mod should only work with my custom ROM installed. Be warned and please do not blame me if you run into some problem while applying the mod over stock or any other custom ROM
Thanks Bruno for the recovery image. I will get it flashed when I am back home.
I have noticed that actual phone reception signal levels are lower than my W3+ Thl phone. Have you noticed any difference in signal levels where you are against your ZTE 970? It may be just the algorithm they use on this one.
I love the tricolour led but lack of tts settings is a little annoying. Overall, I am very pleased with it so far though.
Thanks Bruno - I look forward to some custom ROMs - I'd managed to dump the entire original ROM last week having made a scatter file then add Gapps but nothing else. I'm completely new to modding and happy to do any testing etc. My phone had the original factory ROM.
Yes the signal reported does seem on the low side. The battery drain does seem a little high as well so far even when not constantly playing with it!!) - wonder if the CPU governor is set properly?
Edit - gave the phone a good full charge overnight - before using it today and down to 90% after 12 hours - with little/no use - so about normal for a smartphone. Probably hadn't charged it fully before!!
Thanks Bruno, my phone is at this time only paperweight, so I am waiting impatiently for your ROM.
Thanks for the recovery img Bruno.
For those of you who want to install the Huawei HiSuite app on your phone and desktop but can not get a link from the Huawei site here, I have uploaded it to 4Shared and you can download it from this folder here. This suite allows some syncing to be done and some backups etc. Full details on the Huawei website.
EDIT:
Bruno, not quite sure what happens but after flashing your custom recovery and testing it, I reboot and the original recovery returns! Just to make sure that I was not going mad, I flashed the custom recovery image again. I can use it, I have even done a back up of the system but after running the phone and a reboot, the original recovery returns again.
Is there anything to resolve this, are you having same problems? This is really strange.
EDIT:
From MSprecher
The custom recovery is allways overwritten by the stockrecovery when booting the phone. This can be avoided by rebooting from within the CustomRecovery right after having flashed it. There should be an extra-option after the reboot-command in CWM-Recovery to avoid this.
Enjoy Matthias

Yes, that happens with the stock ROM installed and the workaround for now is the one Matthias already told you. With my custom ROM installed that will not happen.
Thanks, the option to allways use custom recovery does appear and you have to confirm this option before first reboot. Thanks guys.
Bruno it will be great (i don't know if it is possible) if the new rom could aggregate the memories, i mean the same you did on the ZTE, putting the same storage for programs and the only sdcard is the external.
Yes, I plan to release the same extended userdata mod as I did for V970, but not integrated into the ROM, so that users can choose want they want.
Btw, i found now in my small experience with the device two problems:
- Some apps can't be installed (Asphalt 7, Sports Tracker, WorldMate, etc.) which were working in my previous Gsmart G1345. Is it due to the Mtk CPU??
- Comparing again the two devices, this one has a worse GPS, much more inaccurate and very slower in getting signal.
Lets wait for your fantastic Rom, Bruno.
Crake you are right, I cannot install profile scheduler+ or EasyProfiles Pro due incompatibility. DualSIM?
No, that is a problem of permissions. It will be working on the custom ROM, don't worry.

I have already enabled Speech category (Voice search and TTS output) under Language & input menu, so you'll be able to access TTS settings.
By the way, I will release the first custom ROM today. It will not support any additional language other than the default ones - English and Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) because I don't have time right now to do it. The support for more languages will only be included in the next version. Hope you all understand!
awesome!!
u know I have been waiting for a rom for this phone u8836D from day one, because i messed it up on the day i received it, especially replacing the system folder files etc.. just pain in the bum to not have a rom (even stock rom) handy. And it's been endless waiting...
when your first post came up, I opened your shared folder for like a million times to try to find the rom, but just recovery img there, i thought I missed something maybe and read all your posts another million times...
Now just 10 mins ago, it appears in that lovely folder just like a magic...
Will let you know how I go...
i haven't learned my lessons from my last 5 Android phones...all I want now is just clean system with google services on...
When we get that, we star talking optimization and who's ass is more sex lol
Okay, I have just uploaded the first custom ROM for U8836D into my 4shared folder.
Please read what are the fixes / modifications that I've made over the stock ROM on the third post of this thread or in the readme.pdf that's inside the .7z file.
Enjoy! :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: I forgot to say that this ROM clears all userdata, so make a backup first using Titanium Backup, for example. But please note: do not restore any contact / messages database. Let Android create it from the scratch or else, if you restore everything the CID bug will be there again!
So how do I restore (and backup) sms, contacts and call logs to avoid CID bug?
Simple: you don't restore. Just sync the contacts again with Google (or Exchange), let the database be built from scratch and that's it. It's either that or having the nasty CID bug back...

For more information please refer to GPe RUU and ROM thread. ROM is compatible with all M8 variants except Dual SIMThis is not a general discussion thread, please keep off topic chatter to a minimum.
This is a stock ROM with very little modifications.
Modifications made to this ROM are for Verizon network connectivity. framework-res.apk for apns.xml and eri.xml, build.prop
Added CDMA device support to stock boot.img
If there are issues with the ROM that don't pertain to those changes, those comments and bug reports should be directed at Google and HTC not here.
Special notes:
[*]Built with the AROMA Installer. Options include... Stock, Traditional Root and System-less Root.
[*] Its recommended to be on the latest Verizon firmware 6.21.605.3
[*] If you were using any partition as f2fs, you must switch back to ext4 first.
[*] When prompted to insert SIM during setup, just hit skip and continue on with the setup.
[*] Unknown phone number may show in settings under Sim Status. You can still make and receive calls, your number automatically populates after first reboot.
[*] If you have issues with 3g/LTE data hand off, do a full RUU and do a factory reset with the stock recovery. Alternatively just flash the stock recovery and do a factory reset. Theory is the stock recovery rebuilds NV data. Getting a new SIM card has also been reported to work. Calling customer service and asking them to reset your connection has also been reported to help.
Install: using TWRP is recommended
1. Reboot to recovery
2. Wipe/Factory reset if coming from another ROM
3. Flash ROM
4. Reboot
5. Enjoy, First boot will take 5 to 10 minutes, on average I've noticed it takes about 7

FAQs & Issues
FAQs
Q. 3 dot menus have a lot of lag. Whats going on?
A. In order to add the low quality Mms fix and add other values to fix sms for some users, the framwork-res.apk must be modified.
Apktool breaks some animations, until apktool can be fixed the only workaround is to set your "Window animation scale" to "Off" in the developer settings. This will eliminate the lag.
Q. Do I have to be S-Off to use this ROM?
A. Yes, unfortunately Verizon devices aren't supported by HTC Dev unlock so you need to be S-Off in order to flash a custom recovery. If you didn't get your device S-Off with KitKat rooted and unlocked with Sunshine, I'm afraid your only hope now is finding a forum member who can unlock it with a Java Card. Sunshine now works with sense marshmallow. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487
Q. I can't get RRO layers to work, what am I doing wrong?
A. Nothing, RRO Layers was not included by HTC. So in short it doesn't work nor will it ever! Don't even ask!
Q. How do I enable the SystemUI Tuner in 6.0?
A. Pull down the notification shade, Long press the settings gear. It's hard to see but the gear will spin under your finger. Press and hold, this may take a long time and may take multiple attemps but you will get a toast saying the "SystemUI Tuner is active". The menu will appear in the settings under About phone.
Q. How do I enable multi window in 6.0
A. You need to edit the build.prop, look for ro.build.type=user change it to ro.build.type=userdebug save the file and reboot. If you haven't already you need to enable developer options. In About phone you have to tap the build number several times to enable. In developer options you'll find the multi window switch about 3/4ths the way the down the settings list.
Q. Does the duo camera Ufocus and 3D effects work on GPe?
A. Yes it does. Google camera supports the duo effect. HTC FX editor is a stock feature of GPe so Ufocus and 3D effects all work.
Q. I don't see Trusted face in Smart lock, am I missing something?
A. Trusted face was removed in 5.0.1, probably to make room in the /system. Trusted face for (M8) GPe Marshmallow. Ported from the Nexus 6
Q. I can't get Titanium Backup to work with my sd card, I keep getting an insufficient free storage error.
A. Take a look at this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64064833&postcount=3714
Q. I'm having Ext. SD card permission issues with ***** app. It can't write to my external microSD card.
A. In Lollipop and Marshmallow your app needs to be granted permissions to the root of the Ext. SD card by DocumentsProvider Storage.
1. The app may need updated. Usually the app will open the DocumentsProvider so you can select your card.
2. Make sure when you selected the Ext. SD card in DocumentsProvider that you were in the root directory.
Issues
* MRA58K.H15 Backup account fix, also includes the DND priority mode fix
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24686680535467942
* WiFi may drop out when the screen is off. This issue involves more then just firmware. 5.0.1 and 5.1 used new DHCP protocols, 6.0's protocols are updated and work better on legacy devices but you may have less or no drop out issues with newer WiFi routers.
* Do not disturb / Priority mode is broken... HTC added some code from sense that has broken your notifications from starred contacts when DND is enabled. When DND is enabled with "Priority Only" and a starred contact sends you a text or phone call the ringer should sound and vibrate depending on what your configuration is, but what happens is when the contact is validated its looking for a column "VIP" in the contacts.db, well "VIP" doesn't exist in Google contacts only in Sense contacts... so it doesn't validate and you don't get the notification. Flashable fix.
Thanks to @kbitz for the fix.
* Android 6.0 has an MMS bug that will require you to reboot your phone every couple of days or sending and receiving MMS will become proplematic. Issue tracker on the subject.

Yep same rom new thread. I'm not gonna go crazy with AROMA and mods but I figured it was the best option for an optimal user experience.
Looking forward to it!

New sim and all is well. Just wanted to report back because a few other users experienced similar issues. Hope this helps someone else!
Just wanted to share my experience so far!
I flashed this firmware from DigitalHigh's ROM: M8_FIRMWARE_VZW_001__4.17.605.9.zip
After, I wiped completely and installed your ROM + Beyond Stock Kernel.
Pulled out the SIM and started my phone. Did the initial setup over WiFi and got my phone back up to speed.
I shut down, put the SIM back in, and turned back on. Got 3G.
Only other issues I've had so far are hangouts crashing occasionally and something happened with Google Play Services (on second boot, I got a message saying that it's not compatible with my device and to contact the manufacturer.)
Nevertheless, it's been good.
This is the same as the last Rom posted by undarated, right? Just asking because I flashed that on my primary slot in multirom and I didn't pull my SIM card and everything's fine.

Yes it's the same, he didn't have anything to do with my build so... I started my own thread. I'm in the process of building an AROMA version too with a completely stock option and a custom install with a few options.
I'm glad to hear everything is working for you! :good:
Just wanted to check in and say thanks for this - I've been using it for 3 days now and it has performed flawlessly. I really appreciate the ability to install the stock kernel - I always seem to get lag with any GPE-style ROM for this phone which tries to mod the kernel, install 57 hacks and mods, etc. I also installed xposed to do some minor tweaks. I'm pretty sure this is going to be my daily driver. Hoping for a new version once the latest stagefright patch is released.
OK, put together that AROMA build. Need some testers to make sure everything is good. Pretty sure I nailed it though.

It's striped down significantly... Since there is no mods to the ROM, you can install a stock ROM with no mods or the stock ROM with add ons like sense camera, viper audio, xposed, debloat, su, init.d, busybox, stock or beyond stock kernel, Kinda what I thought the most popular things one would want in a stock ROM.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I haven't had time to flash this ROM but will be very shortly.
I ported over the Lyapota MOD Pack to this ROMs files.
Thought I'd share.
Lyapota thread
The thread says the Aroma installer has 3 choices:
First item for those who have SkyDragon ROM or reflash MODPack to change options.
Second item for those who have Stock rooted ROM and flash MODPack first time.
Third item for those who have pure Stock ROM and flash MODPack first time.
You want the Second choice.
Third choice would be if you don't have busybox/SuperSU it will add these, only difference between 2 & 3, so if you don't want busybox,SuperSU choose Second choice as well
Ignore First choice as it has no reason to be in the installer (for us that is) but haven't had time to remove it yet.

(Flash in Recovery)
ROM is fully functional. No issues, no bugs, great performance.
Did advance wipe in TWRP, on latest firmware .9, chose full wipe in aroma, but got stuck on bootanimation. Any ideas as to why?

[6.0][STABLE] Lazy Man's Debloated ROM for Leagoo M8

The Leagoo M8 is an entry level 5.7" Smartphone running on the MT6580A SOC with 2GB of RAM. Like many budget devices, the Leagoo M8 has decent hardware for the money, but suffers from a poor software experience and too much bloat. I created this project to share a more lightweight and clean software experience so we can get the most out of our device without too much effort
Important note! I am NOT a developer. Don't expect me to know how to recompile a kernel or anything. I'm just a lazy user who has been using Android for a while and much prefers a clean, AOSP-style look and feel There are a few technical issues which are outside of my reach, so if anyone is able to help, please feel free to reach out.
Disclaimer! I am not responsible for any damages you may do to yourself or your device by modifying your device!
What's Working:
- Everything, except some silly Leagoo features which I removed (eg. Supershot, screen recording).
Known issues:
Same issues as stock Freeme OS. Nothing serious and definitely OK as a daily driver, but the following annoy me the most. If anyone is able to suggest fixes, please comment below!
1. Onscreen Softkeys are misconfigured. I'd like to at least re-map the recents button back to recents, and change the long press of recents to menu. Recents should not be a menu button.... this may require recompiling SystemUI.apk (I think) which is out of my depth
2. The fingerprint sensor is silly. Sometimes it won't recognise my finger, despite me adding the same finger three times, and other times the fingerprint sensor is active when using it, and it will trigger some actions if I touch it by accident (eg. when using Chrome it will open the menu, and other time it will just vibrate the phone - strange).
3. Wi-Fi performance and 3G performance are low compared to other devices. Not sure if this can be fixed by software.
4. There are limited language options. I would like to see English (Australia) for example, but this is not a big deal
5. Considering replacing stock Phone and Contacts apps with Google equivalent from Play Store. Will test first.
6. At 10% battery a prompt will appear which asks whether you want to enable "superPowerSave mode" which is a really badly done version of Samsung's Ultra Power Saver mode, which I removed, so clicking OK does nothing. Would be nice to remove this prompt somehow.
Install Instructions:
Since I am lazy, I have just packaged it as a TWRP backup. Root is not included by default, but you can flash SuperSU in TWRP if you like.
1. Install TWRP 3.0.2 on your device via SPFlashTools (If you haven't done so already, download link provided)
2. Download ROM package, unpack archive, and copy contents to /sdcard of the device internal storage
3. Restore the TWRP backup. This will wipe /system, /data and /boot for you, so there is no need to factory reset.
4. Flash SuperSU package from "Extras" folder for Root access (optional)
5. Wipe internal storage to clear up internal storage (optional)
6. Reboot, wait at least 10 minutes for first boot - it takes a while

Glad to hear it, first time I've ever uploaded a ROM. :good: Feel free to use the thanks button and let me know how it goes for you!
Edit: If anyone is able to help out with the wish list, I'd be very appreciative!
Great work and congratulations on your first rom.
Did you run any benchmarks before and after? And how is ram consumption vs. stock?

I can't say I tested much before and after (I couldn't stand the bloat lol), but it definitely feels a lot more responsive, and I am getting good battery life now - around 6hrs SOT today, few phone calls, but mostly messaging and reddit/facebook and a bit of book reading. I'm very happy so far. There are reviews where people were saying they were getting a lot less SOT than that, so I think it's an improvement.
Next thing I'll add to my wish list is to integrate the Google Dialer and Google Contacts app from the play store to replace the stock Android 6.0 apps, assuming that they work well during my testing on this device. They have a couple more features and being linked to the play store means that as Google adds more features and improves functionality, the ROM will automatically get those updates.
Thank you so much for your effort. You help many others
Update: Xposed works fine, and once I installed gravitybox I was able to remap the buttons with relative ease. More info here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811
Edit: was getting some strange issues with Xposed so uninstalled it. For example, my recents key disappeared randomly after a reboot :/
I enjoy this lazy man ROM alot. I have enough juice to make my day. Thank you stephend. I'll advise you a to switch to this ROM.

I actually did it!
The problem was in the "how to" engage the process.
I was pressing both volume buttons and then plug in the phone in the computer.
It worked with just plug in the phone!
I did it on windows 10 x64
Thanks for all the help.
Phone is smooth, great work.
Enjoy.
Yes, mediatek phones are a bit funny, all you have to do is click download and then connect the device whilst it is powered off and it will just flash away, no button pressing needed.
I really would like to re-arrange these on-screen buttons though. Preferably on a system level by editing an XML file. Anyone know how to do this?
Edit: Also, has anyone lost vibration after flashing my deblotated ROM? I've just noticed my phone doesn't vibrate, but I think it might be hardware.

Unless you're still on a Sprint sim,it shouldn't be needed. I'm on the new T-Mobile tower sim and did initial activation on a GSI just fine

sweet, yeah, i think i am on t-mobile, pretty stoked with it so far. unlimited tether data, and now that its rooted, my vpn works. thinking about cancelling my xfinity.
There a step by step guide?
OK got it worked out what rom you recommend for this device there along on the page lol
I'd like a step-by-step guide too. It would save people a lot of trouble if they don't know this particular method of unlocking. Also, is there a way to unlock the assurance sim card for use on other devices?

Assurance locks the SIM to the IMEI network side,so short of commiting felonies no you can't. Good news is the UMX is sim unlocked out of the box,so you can go to any T-Mobile,AT&T or Sprint MNVO(May need to call ASW and tell them to cancel your service for Sprint ). SafeLink is a good choice for lifeline
An AIO ToolKit is about to be released for this device, I wrote it to handle everything from fresh untouched device to fixing a soft-bricked device. The initial release will be removed shortly and this new ToolKit is for Linux...
Thanks for all your work, assurance sent my grandfather a wiko phone, He received a call and from the phone call. the phone was bricked aswell as some chinese ransomware looking malware. Called assurance and their sending this malware infested UMX again, thanks to you though I can get off that malware infested os and onto stock android! Keep up the great work!
tx for this toolbox coming out!
i got this phone via assurance, and indeed, it not only installs many apps/websites with zero user control, but also apps with all chinese characters, and that was right out of the box. a month later i called assurance to stop my service with them, though i've kept this phone. they asked why i was stopping their service, and i just told her it was enough that i had daily apps/games/sites installed without my permission or control, but that some of them were in a chinese character set; this from a phone given to u.s. citizens applying for federal help during covid.
i now use safelink instead, which just gave me a sim for my pixel 3a, much simpler/safer than assurance.
This is an awesome feat. I thank you so much! BUT I do need to explain a couple points from my experience doing this, just in the event that it maybe helps someone out.
I followed the guide step by step but as I have attempted other root options in the past, I think it caused my phone to soft-brick due to those past attempts that I tried with only my own limited knowledge.
So this is my personal experience, only posting for others in the event that someone else has a similar or identical issue. The issue(s) I had were almost certainly not at the fault of the person who wrote this guide, just FYI. For many, their process has proved successful first-try, as you'll see within the comments.
Again, MY experience:
FIrstly, I had to do things differently. So I DID NOT flash anything to the boot partition. I SKIPPED THAT STEP. (Of course this is after my first try when I followed the post's instructions. After my first attempt I found myself in a soft-brick situation. Luckily, I have two of these devices so I was able to rescue the device using the working device's firmware and I only flashed recovery to begin with, and then booted into TWRP, pushed Magisk and installed it...error. Sideloaded Magisk, SUCCESS!
(Always use software from the creator's site/forum, even when you know you can get it here...just to ensure you're getting a safe and up to date version). Once you've got you some Magisk, you can choose to flash any of the recoveries...(I used OrangeFox and TWRP. OrangeFox is prettty cool, but I don't see backup/restore options like in TWRP. PitchBlack wouldn't show my files AT ALL so options were very limited with that recovery.
And other than that, this guide is awesome! I'm now rooted, and I've got LSposed and even changed my font with a magisk module, as well as the boot up screen haha.
Thank you so much to @PizzaG , for not only putting this together but for taking the time to share and help others.
(TAKEN FROM ORIGINAL POST-UNCHANGED): We really appreciate your effort and your sharing with us!!! You ARE AWESOME!

FIrstly, DO NOT flash anything to the boot partition. SKIP THAT STEP. I did this and it bricked my phone. Luckily, I have two of these devices so I'm currently trying to use the other to pull the firmware off, partition by partition, in hopes I can restore the first one with it, without copying over device info....we'll see lol. But yeah, all you need to do if you want this awesome guide, created by these wonderful devs, to work, is just flash the recovery image...reboot into recovery. (You can hold power and volume up until you see the screen flicker/flash, then let go of power or both power and vol up (I don't think it matters) and wala! You've got into TWRP.
Now, either install Magisk off a microSD card OR just sideload it using adb sideload (path to magisk). I used the latest Magisk from their website. (Always use software from the creator's site/forum, even when you know you can get it here...just to ensure you're getting a safe and up to date version). Once you've sideloaded Magisk, you can choose to flash any of the recoveries...(I used OrangeFox and TWRP. OrangeFox is prettty cool, but I don't see backup/restore options like in TWRP. I'm sure it's there somewhere I probably just didn't look well enough.
And other than that, this guide is awesome! I'm now rooted, unlimited data (xposed framework modules) and completely dark-mode across the device (again, xposed modules). I even changed my font with a magisk module and the boot up screen haha.
Thank you so much to the guys/girls/team that put this together. We really appreciate your effort and your sharing with us!!! You ARE AWESOME!

you are false in giving people that "advice" if you were in the test Telegram group for this device, you would surely know that 3+ people have been testing the ToolKit without issue. I post the Telegram link for a reason. So if people have an issue with something, instead of badmouthing an option or feature, you come get live help to fix the real issue at hand, which is not flashing the boot image.
So I pushed root for this device and installed a batick recovery and bootloops, trying the unbrick restore.

So when making a backup what partitions do I need to check? There is a lot more partitions these days some I've never heard of before lol just got the s22 ultra as an upgrade coming from Note 9. oh how i already miss my headphone jack and sd card lmao holding on to this old note as looong as I can. But yea just a little confused note 9 had way less partitions and I know some aren't needed for backups just can't remember and don't know about these new partitions ie: Super, Prism , Etc
dr.ketan said:
Super + data should be enough. Though you can backup prism + optics
As S22 have system ro nothing going to change in system, product, etc except vendor. For that purpose you needs super backup. Prism and optics for csc related.

dr.ketan:
Here some my thoughts and explanation about TWRP backup and restore
Firstly brief explanation about what does partition contains.
Boot : It is Kernel
Recovery : It is Recovery
super : That contains odm, product, system and vendor partitoin all togather.
optics : CSC files (where we routinely making changes for csc features) and network settings depending on your carrier
prism : carrier related apps and other stuff . In odin when you flash CSC*_ or Home_CSC* these two optics and prism gets flashed.
data : That is all your installed app and made changes in settings
Now what to backup/restore?
boot - Helps if something messed up with magisk or waht to restore kernel after flashing custom.
recovery - usually it doesn't require but if you flash some other recovery(TWRP) and you want to restore one in backup, that helps
super : As stated above these is main system, if something you have messed up in system/vendor (usually with flashing something, or erasing something) you can restore by super.img.
optics and prism : as explained above are CSC files, Rather than restoring it, I prefer to flash HOME_CSC*.tar.md5 to make csc compartment clean. So to backup or not not much important.
data : This very sensible part. I prefer to make data backup when there is no samsung a/c or Lockscreen protection there. Also don't restore it cross version of ROM. Also some common mistakes user making is, He/She clen install ROM and then restore data partiton of previous ROM. This is worst then even dirty installing ROM, never do it. It is just false sense of satisfaction that you made a clean install. According me, data partiton backup best to be made just after complete clean install ROM and setting up device without adding any account and lockscreen protection. So when you restore this backup, you will have a device just like you recently completed clean install and save your time to setup initial wizard
Backup Application,Call logs,Contacts,SMS etc
Titanium backup was ruling for decade for these but since A11 it's not trust worthy and on A12 almost useless.
Swift Backup is now my choice (Some other like Migrate, App dash (by RD XDA dev flar2) also alternatives)
For contacts : I do prefer google sync. Just adding google ac everything will be restore on it's own, provided you are saving contacts in google. In case you want to make off line backup of contact, there is a built in utility in phone. Contact - settings - export - This will create a file. Similarly browse same file while you want to import contacts. Catch in this is your contact image will not retain size and it just backup thumbnail picture.
Only one utilility I have found that makes offline contact backup without distoring image quality is My Phone Explore client (needs on both PC and Phone). Also this utility is best for wireless file manager.
Schheduled backup - A must needed utility.
I always prefer clean installation (Factory reset withot wiping media files) and really it takes less than 30 minutes to setup everything.
If you enable schedule backup utility in your Backup app (e.g Swift backup have this) and make some profile like
1.Backup - new app at X time then it will auto backup all app that you have new installed at given time
2.Backup updated app at x time - This will make backup of any app that you have updated in store will backup at given time
3.Any app which get data changes frequently and you needs data changes like whatsapp then create a profile favorite app - add whatsapp in favorite and schedule it to make backup daily at given time.
with these your device always remain ready to clean install anytime instead of last moment backup or some urgent clean install needed.
Also Folder Sync is good utility if you needs duplicate copy of files from Internal storage with scheduled operation.
Hope this may helpful and answer lots of queries for many.

Passing this info along to anyone else that was confused by which partitions were needed for a basic backup
Any chance we can get the kernel to support OverlayFS so it can emulate system rw? Trying to get this module to work Magisk OverlayFS.
Thanks
Two questions:
1. Is the custom kernel required to be flashed?
I have rooted ROM and Magisk is already installed.
2. Can be TWRP installed on this phone or do I need first back to stock ROM flashing original AP* tar file?

1.If you want to use TWRP fully functional, you needs to run multidisabler and that needs to have custom kernel. If you want to use TWRP and don't run multidisabler, it is fine with stock kernel too, but here TWRP have very limited functions like backup partition (except data partition) only to USB storage. SO say, yes you needs custom kernel, else it is useless to have TWRP
2. You can install straighway TWRP (must be included patched vbmeta) if you are already on stock rooted ROM + you needs to run multidisabler + needs to Format data.

TWRP installed, custom kernel too.
Everything went OK except Wipe -> Format Data.
It ended with "Successful" final result but generated few errors at the beginnig:
Anyway, when restarting my phhone to recovery TWRP is launched, in system everything is OK.
Now I'm waiting for dr.ketan ROM version S09.
Thanks so far for your explanations @dr.ketan
Guys I have just received a Korean 512GB S908N, the phone seems to have a Snapdragon CPU. Why is it in this Exynos thread?
Please help me understand, searching has not led to any answers so far about what the CPU really is. The internet seems to have mixed feelings.
