Help Pixel XL features New to Android - General Questions and Answers

Hey fellas/gals,
I am new to the Android scene. Coming from Apple. I have a few questions maybe you can help me with. Right now I am using the Pixel XL but I might need to switch to the S8 if the Pixel can't do it.
1. Can the Pixel allow you to circle or annotate after you take a screenshot? I don't seem to see that option but I am told the S8 Galaxy can allow you to write and edit the photo after you screenshot.
2. Can you change themes like the S8 can on the Pixel?
3. Can the Pixel take photos of things like Bixby and tell you what it is or show you similar photos?
Thank you for your help. I went with the Pixel because I was told by Verizon it has a much smoother and fluid feel than the S8 since it comes straight from Google. But I can't make up my mind. I really want the features above and I am hoping the Pixel can do it!
Thanks!

First of, welcome to XDA and hope you enjoy your trip with us -and your pixel too-!
1.Yes it does, to do so:
Open the screen that you want to capture.
Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time for a few seconds. Your device will save the screen as an image.
At the top of the screen, you'll see the Screenshot capture Screenshot.
Tip: If you don't see the Screenshot capture icon, return to a Home screen to see it.
3.once you are there hit the edit option
Or you may do it from the gallery ir self
2. Surely you can
To do that:
On your phone's Home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
Tap Wallpapers
Or
From the settings page, find “Sound and Display” and then select on Wallpaper.
Or
Choose it from the gallery app
3.it has Google assistant instead,Bixby supports inputs from the camera and the company's browser,it seems that google is still working on that (check the last long in refs),However "Google Now on Tap" can accomplish similar results by performing a search based on what’s currently on your screen.

[Q] Are these features on Android?

I recently got my hands on an iPhone and was able to try it out for a week and curious if any of these features have been made for Android whether it be an xposed module or what.
1. Swipe down/up anywhere in a chat to open/close keyboard.
2. Swipe right to back out of a chat.
Any? Those two happen to be the only real things I enjoy about iOS functionality wise so far other than the smooth gorgeous animations and icons.
If not is there anything to make it similar to this? I absolutely love those 2 features.
1.Doubt it, you could look for a module though
2. That's what the back button is for

Yeah I'm aware LOL, I just find swiping actions like that to be so much more enjoyable/convenient than pressing back button, nice change from the same old same old.

Stripped from the Note 4

This a thread to compile a list of things that we noticed were stripped from the Note 4 in the Note 5. We already know about the big things like removeable battery and SD and ir blaster... if you find something include a work around if you know of one.... I've noticed the removed continuous scroll on TouchWiz as well as hiding apps from TouchWiz launcher. They also removed the "Samsung cloud" which has been present since the Note 2 that allowed my Facebook and Dropbox photos to appear in my gallery..... please if anyone knows how to activate that feature please tell me!! Add more below
This may be a software issue (5.01 to 5.11) but I can not find the MULTI WINDOW ON/OFF switch. Not where it is on note 4

Cant figure out how to hide apps, folders, pics, turn off notifications for certain apps. Also coming from a note 3, the button to the left of the home key used to be a settings button now it only brings up open windows. I do not like this at all... need some serious help here.
---------- Post added at 07:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:40 PM ----------
Update found out how to turn notifications on certain apps off... it is now a little tiny check box at the top in applications manager instead of a big giant button at the bottom. Still need to figure out how to hide apps and photos.

Yea they replaced the menu key with thenmulti window key on the note 4 you'll get used to it shortly... And another way to turn notifications off is if you hold your finger on it some options will come up.

Yea it looks like a lot of toggles are missing it went from like 40 on the note 4 to like 12 on here. When you go over to the "edit" screen on the drop down menu.

Worth noting: On the Note4, you can still access the menu by holding down the recent programs soft key for a couple seconds. On the Note5, you can do it by holding down the back soft key. Holding down recents will give you easy access to split screen view.
I don't see "download booster" anymore.

I noticed this, as well, but I think this is an "upgrade" as the "100s" of toggles were too many before. I have also noticed that there are less entries in the menu, making it simpler looking and easier to navigate/find stuff. It doesn't always necessarily mean options were removed, but just put into a different place. I think overall, this is a good thing because it makes navigating and using the menus much easier and faster.
Among other things, I did notice in S-Note the ability to transcribe handwriting into text is gone. I noticed this even though I don't use it much, so it isn't a huge loss. I think most of the missing items on this phone are mostly not necessary and were rarely ever used, so it seems like it's basically a good thing.
I do wish they didn't remove the ability to disable the Flipboard screen on the stock launcher. Now, the only way to get rid of it even after disabling the Flipboard app is the install a 3rd party launcher. That is my only complaint, but I rarely ever use the stock launcher anyway, so it's not really a huge issue for me.
So far this phone is F***ing sick!

You can disable the flipboard page just hold your finger down on the home screen and then scroll to the flipboard page and you'll see a check mark, just uncheck it. Is that what you're talking about? Hope this helps
Wow! Thanks so much!
That's what I was taking about. They simplified everything so it's not so cluttered, but in some cases it makes things harder to find.
That is what I was looking for. I didn't even notice the check mark before. Thanks, again.

As someone who shoots lots of photography. I noticed they have removed the Black and White setting from the camera. It has been replaced with a terrible filter called "Monogram". I have searched through all the menus and even the "downloads" section. NOTHING! I honestly can't believe it. Like WHY? I prefer shooting in B&W. Like at least let me download it. WTH?!

If you have a backup of all your apps using titanium backup or another similar app
you can get that black/white filter file from there.
Or you can even get it from the twrp flashable zipfile which you used to flashed
your rom with.
It's in the same location in the zip file as all the other camera filter files.
(it's either in system/apps or in the system/priv-apps folder.)
Once you extract the b/w filter file copy it into the same location where all the other
filter files are located in your note 5, who knows you just might luck out and it might
work for you.
The filter files don't require flashing or even installing
so there's really a good chance that it will work for you.
To play safe, be sure to fix the attributes for the b/w filter
file to match all the other filter files attributes after copying.
Good luck,
Have a great day!
I've noticed that Google Play Music no longer puts the album art on your lockscreen when you're listening to music. Frankly I'm kinda pissed about this because I really liked it.
S-Note doesn't allow you to change the default notes view. I used to change it to "list view" instead of the default "tile" view. Now I can only see it in"tile"view.

No CONTINUOUS / INFINITE SCROLL on home screen or app drawer...WHY???

I can't understand why Samsung has chosen to leave this feature out of the S6 & S7 when it was on the S5. It makes no sense for me to have to scroll over several pages to go from the "A" apps to get to the "Z" apps or to scroll several home pages to get to the one I want when continuous scroll would be such a simple feature to include in TouchWiz.
Samsung please get this right on a future update!

Agreed! If they consider this a way to reduce bloatware, it's a mistake.
They take it away so they can brag about it when they include on next model.
App Drawer and continuous scroll
I am using Android 7 on an LG V20 and when I updated the phone from 6 to 7 the same thing happened.
This what I did to correct the problem. Android 7 defaults to Home rather than Home and App Drawer.
The following steps will reset the home screens to what apps where on them when the phone was setup.
It will not delete any data, pictures or apps you have installed. when finished you just need to add your apps back to your screens via the app drawer. (The white button with 6 dots at he bottom of screen)
Home does not have continuous scroll or the App Drawer. To change back to Home and App Drawer do this.
1. Choose Settings.
2. Choose the General tab.
3. Choose Apps
4. Choose the menu (3 stacked dots in upper right corner)
5. Choose Configure apps.
6. Select Home and change default to Home and App Drawer.
That should do it
Soo many people making such intricate and useless apps in the world, yet nobody makes a workaround to this or other features that samsung has ripped away from people and if they did its impossible to find, and instead we will have people saying that its a good thing this and other very useful features are removed and any new update is a good thing. After reading such worthless and useless comments by people all the time when trying to diagnose very simple issues, I know that If i was a major company I would also **** over the consumers knowing how stupid they are because 98% are ****ing worthless and actually clueless its sickening.

Sold my iPhone X and got an Pixel 2 XL

Hi
As the title says, I sold my iPhone X and got the new Pixel 2 XL, and I love it. It is truly amazing. But how ever.. There is some features that I miss. - Sinces android is like an open world compared to Apple I do hope some of you might know how to solve my "problems"
Here they are:
1. Are you able to get rid on the Navigations bar at the bottom AND get the iPhone swipe gestue? Left for back, Right for forward and Up for homescreen, and while on homescreen up will go into the menu (where all my apps are listed)? And also while the keybord still working perfectly in every app when the Navigation bar is hidden? Is that possible? With my iPhone X I could switch between apps while draggin left of right on the bottom at my screen, and also if i swipe up and hold a bit, all my open apps where listed. Is that possible to get on Pixel 2?
2. I've heard alot about burn in. At the moment I am using an Live wallpaper default by Google. (The earth spinning around). Its black - does that have any effect on burn in, or is it only white colour I have to be careful of?
3. On my iPhone I could see my notifications on my apps. (A lille red number), my Pixel 2 doesnt show this, am I able to see that? For Facebook, messenger ect.
This is my first android, so bar with me and my stupidly questions lol
Thanks for your time

For me, it's kind of hard to understand exactly what you are talking about since I don't use my iPhone that often. But I'll play around to see if I can answer #1. But burn in I wouldn't worry about unless you get it. Then return the phone for a free replacement if it happens. I think that issue has been resolved for the most part. That you might want to visit the XL forum for and I'll link that for you below.
#3. I believe they are called "badges" on the iPhone. It is a very nice feature which we don't have on a stock system. I think there are some third party apps in the play store for that but you can search under notify apps or something like that. Maybe even Google can help out on that. I did see some references to it and there is something called Nofityer Unread Count app but I've not tried it.
Here ya go, but do a search on screen burn in before you ask. People get a little touchy around here sometimes if it's been answered dozens of times.

1. If you root your phone, there are ways to remove the navbars... and if you use a custom launcher (such as Nova Launcher), you can set gestures on the home screen. As for systemwide gestures... you would need a gesture app such as https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures&hl=en
Perhaps ask around here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/70jkag/android_launcher_with_iphone_x_like_gestures/
2. Personally never had an issue although I am using Pixel 2.
3. If you use Nova Launcher.. there is the option to show "Notification Badges" with 3 options -- Dynamic Badges (generated badge icons from your notification content), Dots (which shows a dot on the icon in the corner), and Numeric Badges (which shows the unread count of notifications for the app on the icon -- requires TeslaUnread addition)
Quoting a post I found on another forum:
If you display static content on it for an extended period of time like on a store unit or on-screen buttons, then it will burn-in. Not quite as quickly as some have stated, and certainly not as quickly now compared to older OLED panels, but it's still an issue. For instance, the Galaxy S6 edge store units I've seen have suffered from pretty bad burn-in after a year of service, as they're powered on for almost the entire day at maximum brightness without the screen going to sleep. That's an extremely high-wear situation and a phone won't go through that sort of usage pattern (screen on 24/7 at max brightness) in the hands of consumers, maybe even for its lifetime.
Which brings me to this. Consumer units will suffer much less drastically compared to store units. They'll last for years with normal usage, though exceptions such as some Nexus devices with OLED panels exist. In most cases, however, you should be fine. I still have a 4 year old Galaxy S3 with the original display and it hasn't burned-in yet. Very impressive.

Personally I've had a Samsung Galaxy S (the original one), S4, S5, S6, S7 Edge in the past, and none of these devices suffered from screen "burn in". My Pixel 2 is supposed to arrive tomorrow and I'm not gonna worry about the screen burn in issue. I think people are being way too paranoid about this.
We might want to wait for the OP to respond. Could be some trolling going on here.

Best you can do with stock firmware is dots rather than numbers. Try Settings | Apps & Notifications | Notifications | Allow notification dots

You mean the best you can do with stock apps, not firmware. Third party launchers such as Nova can give you numbers without any need to root.
The notification badges on iOS are just a bandaid solution to their compete lack of notifications in the status bar. On Android, no matter which app you have open, you can always see if you have a notification waiting for you without swiping down from the status bar or going to the home screen to scan for badges.
My best advice to the OP is to avoid making your Pixel look and act like an iPhone. You're only holding yourself back from all the awesomeness that Android has to offer.

Except the Pixel 2 suffers burn in on the navigation bar as well... try a grey background or white or dark blue, you'll see it. I have 2 Pixel 2's and a 2XL in the family and they all suffer burn in of differing degrees

Not seeing that on the Pixel 2 with a white background. Is it severe enough to be annoying or distracting to you?
edit: Hey whatever happened to the OP? lol. He trolled us pretty good. But it was fun anyway, so thanks.
Same here, no trace of burn-in on mine so far (tested with several different colours of background).

Question From Pixel 4a to Flip 3 - Getting Google Back

Hi guys, and thank you for all of the informative posts in this forum. I recently traded my 4a for a Flip 3, and find myself really missing so many elements of the pure Android 11 experience. Any advice on how to get a little functionality back?
- Multitasking pane behavior: the window switcher button automatically flips to the previous app instead of just bringing up the app tray. Additionally, my beloved Screenshot and Select tray buttons are gone - I just started getting used to using the picture copy functionality.
- Dialer: I installed the Google Phone app and have it set as my default calling app, but incoming calls still don't have the Decline / Screen / Accept red/blue/green buttons.
- Settings shade menu: I'd like the brightness control to appear at the very top of the pulldown. Really, I just want stock Android everywhere.
- App tray: flick up to get to your apps, but then have to flick sideways to page through them? Ridiculous.
Any advice would be appreciated. I hate the idea of bloating my phone with a ton of apps to customize the experience, but it seems like there's no way to run a stock Android launcher in place of OneUI.
You could try Good Lock on Galaxy store.

Only works on Pixel phones: exclusive feature.
Don't want to come across as a jack ass but sounds like you need to switch back to pixel phones. Or like one other person said try good luck from Samsung store.

Give some of the Samsung features a try. You are talking the difference of a single click to return to the previous app and there are only about 10 ways to take a screenshot, ranging from gestures to keys.

- Dialer: I installed the Google Phone app and have it set as my default calling app, but incoming calls still don't have the Decline / Screen / Accept red/blue/green buttons.
- App tray: flick up to get to your apps, but then have to flick sideways to page through them? Ridiculous.

There are 1000 custom apps for this stuff, but you only need one of each. Once you find ones you are satisfied with, it's not incredibly hard to hide the stock ones away and forget they exist

- Settings shade menu: I'd like the brightness control to appear at the very top of the pulldown. Really, I just want stock Android everywhere.

Pull down your notification bar. Now pull it down all the way. Hit the three dots in the upper right. Click quick panel layout. Slide the option to do this to the enabled state.

Any advice would be appreciated. I hate the idea of bloating my phone with a ton of apps to customize the experience, but it seems like there's no way to run a stock Android launcher in place of OneUI.

If you want a truly stock experience, unlock the bootloader and build a generic version. Samsung hands you all the tools and instructions.
As for advice, I suggest actually trying the phone before trying to make it a Pixel. It isn't. It never will be. If you prefer Pixel, stick with Pixel.
