Speakerphone (loudness, clarity) - Samsung Galaxy S8 Real Life Review

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy S8's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.

Its loud and clear. Great sound. All stock and no root

Get headphones or a bluetooth speaker for like 100bucks. You got an s8, dont tell me you dont have 100eur more to spend on something

The quality is good but honestly if it went a pinch louder then it would be perfect

speaker quality is par at best. obviously no improvements in the past 2 or 3 generations.
people have a hard time hearing me on speakerphone. speaker for me is just barely loud enough.
hopefully they will fix in coming updates.

Does anyone else get a laser beam sounding tone on high pitched sounds

The quality and loudness is not good enough on the speaker phone. Honestly, i have a lenovo vibe s1 costing $135, sounds better and louder. Sorry to say, i had to say this, as i was comparing the loudspeaker clarity with Huawei honor 6+ and lenovo vibe s1, both of these phones performed better than s8

I like having the front firing speakers since my finger sometimes covers the speaker when I hold the phone in landscape with one hand. With the bottom speaker, I have to kind of "cup" the speaker to "direct" the sound frontwards. The sound isn't bad, but I do prefer the front firing speakers for this reason.
On calls, with Verizon HD calling, it sounds amazing. With regular calls, it sounds pretty good usually, but if I'm outside, I often find myself selecting the "Turn on extra volume" option.

I'd have to say it sound a bit on the quiet side. Since it is very similar to my G4, I've already got use to it.

I traded my S5 in for an S8 and transferred my ring tones over from the S5 to the S8. Even at full volume on the S8 they are much quieter than the S5.

I love modem strike online and it sucks cause how you hold the phone it covers up the sound. Sucks. You can't 'cup' and play

My S7A is the loudest phone I have heard compared to all my friends and co-workers.
Speaker on the S8A is really that bad?
I got my S7A just befor the S8A became available, I'm considering dumping my S7A and getting the S8A.
Hmmm, maybe a major update might include a fix for the amplifier.
Could also be the location of the speaker on the S7A.......

I actually just had to send mine in due to the loudspeaker being all distorted sounding. Was really disappointed because I love this phone. I sent the phone in for warranty repair. I will reply with how it turned out.

Coming from a Moto X Pure, which had stereo front facing speakers, This was is the best way to describe it. It totally sounds like laser beam sounding tones and it drives me insane.

How is the voice quality and sound on this phone??

I keep reading reviews knocking the sound quality and voice quality of this phone, and it's scaring me away from it. They say the speakerphone and earpiece speaker is very low and tin can sounding. Can you all share if this is true or not?
Some days it sounds like a tin can but others it's fine. My DX was a lot better sounding. People can hear me without any issues though. It's only on my end.
the speaker for the bolt is pretty quite wish it was a bit louder, as for call quality on stock and das BAMF for me its one of the better sounding phones i have owned
I found that the phone sounds crappy a lot of the time. The volume control range is too narrow, so the volume is either too loud at the lowest setting or too quiet on the highest. When you crank the volume all the way up you get a lot of distortion and noise. I was definitely surprised by the low quality of the phone on t-bolt. My clamshell from ages ago worked better.

in call sound quality on mine is not that great,I get a crackeling noise at max volume which i never had before(also didnt notice till i dropped it a few days ago so may be the cause for me) but i almost always use bluetooth so its not really an issue for me the BT sound quality has been great for me.
well i have had 3 of them and so far all have been better than any blackberry or my htc imagio, the speaker is behind the kick stand that makes it quit but thru the headset and tethered to the car stereo its just fine. I drive a truck and its loud in here but all works well.

Unfortunately the TB is the worst sounding phone that I've ever owned... people on the other side say that I sound awful as well.
Yes it sounds bad and they know it!
I talked to HTC about the sound quality. They told me it was a software problem and would be fixed (Sure it will). They said to close the kickstand to make the external speaker sound better. Well if you can't hear it I suppose it sounds better. They said to turn the volume down so the ear piece sounds better. The phone also has a bad headphone amplifier. It distorts bad if you add a little base. This is my first HTC phone and it will probably be my last.
Wow, coming from my Droid X I have the exact opposite of what most of you are having.
No one has noticed that I have changed phones and I'm having an easier time understanding people on the other end.
I have a friend with a heavy Swedish accent that is much easier to understand now than he was on my X.

[Q] N5 loudspeaker whats normal?

Hey gang,
I know that this is one of the reported issues of this phone, but bear with my question.
Now I've manually using Root Explorer upped the volume of the headphones and the speaker, both are in effect and the headphones are effectively overly loud (excellent) however the loudspeaker is louder, but ringtones and sms play with distortion on certain items, which obviously because i increased the volume, it does mean quiet sources like youtube are easier to hear, and generally only the bass suffers, but my real question here is, what is a quiet loudspeaker and what is a normal loudspeaker on this phone?
Some people have suggested calling Google for a RMA, but I'm thinking other than this issue, the phone is perfect, I don't want Google giving me a phone worse off then my current one, yet because of the internetz I dunno whether i'm expecting too much out of the loudspeaker or if it genuinely has an issue.
Can anyone suggest what i should expect out of the handset? I mean before increasing the volume it was crystal clear, but a little on the quiet side, now it's louder but can be distorted depending on the audio thoughts? can someone describe a bad loudspeaker to me?
Thanks to those who reply..
Luke.
Expect distortion when the sound is loud enough to hear in a room with an average amount of ambient noise.
What you have sounds normal to me. You won't get enough volume to easily hear it above other noise with out distortion the physical speak is just to small.
Also be careful there is a fix coming from Google soon make sure you revert your changes before you install it in case Google has done some speaker tweaking of thier own.

Well thats good enough for me. I'm ok with the quality of the speaker, but not impressed.
I did a little test with my Lumia 1020, and the volume of the N5 @ 70% is equal to 1020 @ 22/30
The difference is the Lumia can go to 30/30 with no distortion.
So it's as loud as the Lumia up to a point.
Good tip, i'll adjust it, when the update hits. Thanks man.

Z3 speakers?

Hello!
As some of you knows it already the Z2 speakers are low out of the box and even only one speaker works when the phone ring.
Do you think the Z3 will be louder with tweaks as Phonearena review is saying it's not loud enough?
Btw does the new UI has a car app?
Please post questions in the Q&A section

Hiya
Just got mine last night. The bottom speaker is the only speaker that plays when the phone rings, although it is quite loud. Texts seem quiet though. This would be better through both speakers though for sure.
Can't see a Car app on UK unlocked model.
Different with my Z3 (bought via Vodafone Germany): BOTH speakers are used for incoming call sounds; pretty decent volume.
Didn't notice a "car app"; there's Garmin navigation preinstalled - but the usual "try and NOT buy" kind. So just regard it as nonexistent, simply stick with Google Maps. And yes, Sony generously allows deinstalling Garmin navigation.
Speakers in general: Nice and clear sound, quite deep stereo effect, but a bit thin, could be louder, about the same volume as Samsung's S4.
Playing around with preamp settings does NOT help, just leads to distortions.
HORRIBLE volume via 3,5 mm connector - AS USAL, volume is FAR TOO LOW for powering anything else than that infamous earwax pullers (in-ear headphones).
For something positive: The sound via headphones connector is real fine, you won't be disappointed if it comes to audio fidelity.
this is probably done on purpose by design. sony probably figures if they enabled both speakers or made them louder it would be pretty rude when in public places.. something would agree with.. nothing more annoying than to be at a public place and hearing phones ringing at full volume . IMO these devices are already ring loud enough.. i keep mine at middle volume and is plenty loud. i think people that require louder should invest in hearing aids or perhaps clean their ears

Can't say limiting the ability of the phone to ring through both speakers is a design feature.
I'm going to keep looking to see if anyone sorts the sound coming out of one speaker as this is the culprit I think.
Edit: I actually think having both speakers playing would allow them to reduce the volume in both, allowing for less distortion and a nice sounding ringtone.
Im currently test driving the IPhone 6...yes don't bash me this is my first iPhone...I'll like to know if the speaker output on the Z3 is as loud as the iPhone 6?
I just own z3 I can tell speaker very low.I owned z1 z2 before. same kind **** Sony don't improve anything

The iPhone 6 speaker is louder, but since it's always facing the wrong direction, the louder speaker doesn't always translate to more sound reaching your ears. Your hand often covers the speaker as you hold it as well.
It's plenty loud, maybe not as good as HTC M8 levels in terms of clarity at full volume but pretty close.
Speaker tests from GSMArena. Look for stats in a table in the middle of the page in each link.

Crisp, and doesn't distort at max volume.
I'd love to hear more about this from users. Wondering if it can properly drive my ath m50x

Although not really the intended purpose of this thread, It should have no issues driving a pair of m50x's. I don't personally have a pair to test with, but those are generally effortless to drive and the 6p has pretty solid audio across the board in my experience.

I have both Nexus 6P and ATH-M50x. They are loud at max volume; easy to say they are uncomfortable to listen to at this volume.
PS: The ATH-M50X have 38 ohms impedance, an amplifier isn't even required for using these headphones. Once you get past 50 ohms impedance you would want to consider an amp. Adding an amp to your audio will color the sound, the ATH-M50x's are well known for their flat-response I would recommend keeping them that way and modify the sound through an equalizer.

The incoming sound is great, but I keep hearing that my voice is very distorted on the other end. When I switch back off of speakerphone everything apparently sounds fine. I've heard of other people having the same problem. I'm thinking it's probably the noise cancelling mic being on during a speakerphone call.
Phone calls have been subpar so far, bad incoming sound and people struggling to hear me on the other side. Speaker is nice and loud though
I have both a Nexus 6 and 6P. The Nexus 6P speakers are good, but the 6 are louder and clearer IMO
earbuds sucks btw
Seems a bit louder than the Moto X 2014, but less balanced. Alltogether great speakers, though.
The speakers are LOUD!! Its one of the loudest speakers out there. Its not as good with the bass like HTC's speakers in the M8 and m9 but Hauwei and Google have packed some awesome speakers in this phone
mediocre speaker volume however with viper4android it makes it 4.5
Kind of quiet. Good for normal use but wouldn't want to try and hear the speaker in the car.

Coming from HTC M7 with Boomsound, so I'm a bit spoiled regarding good speaker quality. The 6P comes closes to the M7 but boomsound speakers definetly have more bass. But it's OK for me
this is my first time with smartphones with stereo speakers. its quality, volume both are amazing
Its loud but with certain voice types i here some sort of distortion or rattle which disappears if I put my finger on the speaker ( not fully covering it )

OnePlus Speakers?

Hey guys, I didn't seem to find any information about the speakers in the review section of the forum. I know OnePlus has been using the same single downward firing speaker with their phones since they began, and just want some opinions and insight as to how good they are. I know they can be easily muted with your hand, but are they at least loud and clear? REALLY considering the upcoming 6t, but just want to know if the speakers are at least good enough. Thanks!
Speaker is weak.. Really weak. Root + ViPER4Android makes it somewhat better.. But yeah you can't fix bad hardware with software.

That...... Bums me out. I REALLY hope the 6t has either a better speaker or a stereo pair, that'd really be nice! But shoot, weak as in tinny? Or weak as in just not loud enough?

Well shoot, I'm coming from a Motorola Nexus 6. I'll be leaving behind a QHD display and stereo front facing speakers for this device. I decided OnePlus because I definitely want a device with a great dev scene, but these trade offs man! Lol
The op6 speaker is better than any Samsung single speaker. For single speakers it's not that bad. I can hear it in my pocket.
I'm gonna agree with Gizmoe, I think it's actually quite good. Last few devices were Sony Z3 (dual speaker/ stereo), Moto z3 (dual speaker/ stereo) Nexus 6p (dual speaker/ stereo) LG g6, Samsung S8+ , and now OP6...for a single speaker it sounds pretty damn good. Also there are stereo mods for OP6 as well as Viper for even better sound.
It's easily my favorite device.
Speqker is pretty good... Can't say its worst or bad. But defienetly gives crystal clear sound while listening to video or youtube.

Alrighty! Yeah I'm not expecting anything amazing, but just so long as it sounds okay I'm good! Yeah ditching stereo speakers and QHD is hard for me, though I checked out my buddy's 5T the other day and remember thinking "that screen is 1080? It looks GREAT!" But then I covered his speaker with my thumb and well......... LOL But just hoping it sounds at least okay, I'm gonna take the dive and go for the 6T this time. I really hope there's a red color option on launch! The red 6 looks soooooo awesome to me!

I was kind of spoiled coming from a Motorola x pure edition with 2 stereo front-firing speakers. They sounded loud and high quality with minimal distortion. The op6 doesn't hold a candle but I would say it is serviceable.

Thank you for pointing this out! I had no idea! Guess that's really not a good comparison, huh? Sorry.
Considering it's a single speaker it's pretty decent, im easily able to speak on calls on the speakerphone which always has been my benchmark for how loud and clear a speaker is on a phone. The position of the speaker is crap, very easily mutable specially while playing games but if flop the phone where notch if your right side, that issue can be overcome.

I didn't even consider gaming. Wow, that's something to think about! Well I'm going to watch the launch event tomorrow and decide, but it's a tough one. Coming from a Nexus device to a OnePlus? I'm leaning towards it because Nexus is no more and the new pixel phone??? I considered it, but for something I've going to look at several times a day for a few years or more, that notch is atrocious! Just insulting really.
Notch on Pixel 3 is super ugly and not to forget only 4 GB of Ram which means reloads (already notched by reviewers). For OP6T, it should have onscreen fingerprint scanner which may be the new technology but I can bet it won't be as fast as conventional fingerprints - that makes it a fail for me. Only thing to envy for OP6 users should be the teardrop notch. Gluck with decision making
The 6T will have stereo bottom firing speakers. Where the Jack was is replaced by a speaker. The fingerprint reader is going to be slower though and isn't always on. Making the experience slower than on the 5, 5t and 6. It's the reason I didn't wait and bought a 6 just a week ago. I figured the first to market with this would be more gimmicky than functional.
