Unable to see folder contents of SD card when mounted in Windows - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Have an odd issue. When I mount my U11 in Windows, I am unable to see the contents of the folders on my external SD card. Example is my pictures folder. However, the pictures are there because any photo app can see them. Any new pictures I take are visible when the phone is mounted. I didn't have this issue on the HTC 10.
My phone is the US Unlocked running the newest firmware. Bootloader unlocked / rooted running Viper 1.3.
This issue also happens on full stock.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but, you ARE setting USB connection to "file transfer," right? It defaults to "charge only."

USB connection is file transfer.

I have 0 issue with that... Missing some drivers?

[Froyo 2.2] A2SD corrupts FAT32 SD partition (Explanation for developers)!! SOLVED !!

==========================================================
Thanks to jodamm, this problem was solved. Thanks again.
See the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8144292&postcount=114
==========================================================
I'll try to explain when and how the FAT32 partition is corrupted.
At least, the problem occurs with these custom roms version I tested:
[Froyo Sense] LeeDrOiD Mod V1.8 (07/08 l Official HTC 2.2 l Fast l Stable! l A++)
[Rom](05/08/10) Alex-V 1.1 OTA Froyo Sense based on Paul (modaco) only added App2sd+
[ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N
[ROM] CyanogenMod-6 for Desire V6.0.0-RC2 (08/15/2010) with [Script][A2SD] Darktremor Apps2SD 2.7.5 RC3 (08/16/2010)
[ROM][16/08] ?.NexTSense v5.3 Official Sense-FroYo 2.2 ·(720p|2.09|AP2SD+|Multilangu)
[ROM] Froyo-Official - Pinky Desire Lite v0.2 - ODEXED without A2SD+ Problems
Situation:
FAT32 + EXT2/EXT3 partition
A2SD or A2SD+ activated (as comes with these roms)
Clean FAT32 partition
The following steps explain how to see the beggining of the corruption.
1) Power on the phone disconnected from the PC
2) Take a photo. The photo is saved in SD in the folder DCIM\100MEDIA
3) Connect the phone to PC and select "Disk Drive"
3.1) Test the disk with Windows.
4) Open the folder DCIM\100MEDIA and you will see the photo taken. This is GOOD.
5) Close the windows explorer and now select in the phone "Charge Only"
6) Take a new photo. The new photo is saved in SD in the folder DCIM\100MEDIA (in theory)
7) To ensure, see the photo in the phone.
8) Connect again the phone to PC and select "Disk Drive"
8.1) Test the disk with Windows.
9) Open the folder DCIM\100MEDIA and you will NOT see the photo taken because windows fixed the file system. You will see only the previous one. This is VERY BAD.
10) Close the windows explorer and now select in the phone "Charge Only"
11) To ensure of this, try to see the photo in the phone. Did you find it?
If the 8.1) step is not done, the photo will be seen in the phone when select "Charge again", but if you write a file in this step instead, the SD will corrupt.
The only way I found to save the second photo in the SD is power off the phone. Try this.
Repeat the steps 1) to 7)
8) Power off the phone
9) Power on the phone and you will find the second photo.
Summarizing
All the SD recording after the first PC connection are not consolidated in the SD until the phone is off. If you connect with the PC before power off, the recordings are lost.
I wait your testings ....
well itried to cause the bug but i had another bug.....evrything went fine....the photo was found by both phone and pc before and after the 1st and 2nd disk drive mount....BUT when i tried to open the second photo taken in pc (step9) it was saying that the file or drive is corrupted etc...but it was there...then i changed to charge only and opened it with phone just fine.....
i use my rom Lambros Custom Rom r3.1 EXTREME which is based on ieftm's rom
[ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N
That is because your SD is not clean.
I did the tests with a clean SD Fat32 partition.
Try again if you can and thanks.
Regards, Daniel
I have same problems.
I take many of photos and videorecord with my phone, then connect as USB Drive, and all taken files was corrupted. But when I take a look with my Desire, I can see it.
When I click to Fix corupted files, there will be delete.
How I can fix this?
I using APP2SD+ with ext3 512MB.
I lost all of my photos during an upgrade...at least I know it wasnt me lol
I saw these errors on my new low cost eBay SD cards. 16G and 32G... They kept on loosing data, never happening on the brand 4G Sundisk. they probably not really class 6. I did the same tests on a new card reader and got same results.

The problem has nothing to do with the class of the SD. The problem is A2SD.
The first connection works well but the following not.

The problem does not occur without and EXT2/EXT3 partition and with A2SD deactivated.
In this case the second and followings connections to PC always show the photos taken.
Regards
It happens to me as well on 2.2 with A2SD.
I don't remember seeing the FAT32 partition corrupted on 2.1. Can someone test on a 2.1 with A2SD ?
Never happened to me on 2.1 + A2SD, happens now on 2.2 + A2SD both with and without Sense. What's more, Sense clock and other widgets disappear and don't work very well after you mount and unmount the USB disk.
Yes I get this too sometimes, thought it was gallery3d but turns out it is not.
Do not try to repair errors on the pc. This will delete the files. Reboot the phone and the files will be readable or appear.
I've had this problem for a while now on both defrost and open desire roms. I've reported the bug numerous times.
Hmmm...interesting finding...would like to confirm the following issue.

+1 happened to me. is this issue with A2SD?
I'll try my new Kingstron card today and see.
Just want to share another finding. I am so curious whether the problem only occurs with Ext3 or Ext4. I have tried on Ext2 (even though not as bad, in fact much better). Before I used AmonRa to create a partition, and upgd to EXT3. This time I repartition them just by using Ext2 (no upgrade). Seem like that weird issue still exist, for example when you take the new photo, and then switch to disk drive, the windows explorer wont see the picture you created. Switching back to charge, you can still see the picture with your phone. However once you rebooted your phone, the windows explorer will finally see the files. At least this way it's not that bad, you dont get the corrupted files. You just cant see the new created pictures until your next reboot.
PS: Could it be something with journal features of both Ext3 or 4??

I can do the exact same thing with ext3 (on OpenDesire 3.0.5)
By the way, I've seen someone on modaco reporting this happens on his rooted stock rom without a2SD partition
Well... it's strange. Only the first photo I've taken is visible after connecting to PC. But all photos are visible when I browse the card with some file explorer on the phone. All open perfectly fine with no errors. Maybe system just somehow caches the folder status (i don't say that it's working correctly)?

[Q] No folders in Open Recovery

I have Open Recovery and was getting ready to flash Kahl's Galaxy and when I went into my nandroid, my back ups were there and the Galaxy folder, however there were no options to "tick" (system, data, cache,...). It was all empty. I can see the nandroids on my PC when I plug it in but can't flash them. Says something like, "Nothing to Restore".
Tried reformatting SD card
Re-installing Open Recovery.
SBF back to stock
32gb card (fat, then 1g ext3, then 125swap- and all are ordered correctly)
Any ideas?
Make sure the folder structure on the sdcard is ...
Code:
/sdcard/nandroid/GalaxyXTV4/ (boot.img, boot.md5, system.img, system.md5)
not
/sdcard/nandroid/GalaxyXTV4/GalaxyXTV4/ (boot.img, boot.md5, system.img, system.md5)
HTH
They are set up the correct way. Even my old bakc ups aren't showing correctly either.
Another clue to the puzzle:
When I go into my Gallery, I get a triangle at the top that says "failed to read/write sdcard. Gallery may not work as expected"
Maybe a mounting issue. Everything was working 2 days ago.
usually the problem is like 3rdstring just said.
but i got also those problem like yours when my sdcard corrupted and can't be mount on phone, try reformating your mem card.
At first I thought it was the card (and still kind of do now) but it seems that Root Explorer, even though you toggle it to r/w, sometimes it kicks back to r/o and that is what is screwing everything up. When reflashed my 2.1 sbf and started from scratch, re-installing Open Recovery, the sdcard was ticked at r/o, so Open Recovery, as hard as it tried, couldn't read the files.
This also created the problem with the media gallery b/c when I tried to save an MMS to the sd card, it would show up as a broken link/pix. This is actually what led me to the r/o vs r/w Root Explorer problem. Ticked it back to r/w and tried to re-save the MMS pix to my sdcard and viola, it worked. Open Recovery shows all my Nadroid back ups and the sub-folders within.
Now if there was some way to figure out how to make Root Explorer r/w all the time and avoid the constant fear that after I reboot sometime, it hasn't gone back to r/o and messes with my head.
I'll tell you that this phone, as frustrating as it may be, is always a learning experience.
1. the software that running on your phone now is came from a "fresh" file master(from market or computer) or from the backup from your sdcard after it crash?
2. is the fat partition set as active?
3. when reformating the card you use card reader or your phone(use phone as card reader) ?
=======
my problem at that time is quite the same as yours.
and it all happpened bcause i ran the software from the backup file( not a fresh one), i format the card using card reader(maybe my card reader is not run well, so the formating process not run perfectly) and i forget to set partition as active lol
when i tried to use a fresh file master, format through my phone(use phone as card reader) all the problem is gone
just from my experience
*bad english, i hope you understand what i said
same Problem
[email protected]
I've the same problem in the gallery. (failed to read/write sd card)
I can shot some pictures an then the cam freezes. After that the whole xt720 freezes.
@Woodrube:
have you try it with the phone USB mode to format the sd card twice?
I tryed 3 different sd cards - all the same problem.
- the orginal class 2 card
- a 32GB class4 card
- a 16 GB class10 card
I tryed also differt roms:
- orginal
- dexters
- and this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002993
but ever the same problems...
Is it possible that the SD Card reader inside of the phone is damged?!
I need help. i'm going crazy...
USB reader in phone works fine for me. It isn't the card per se, but rather something messing with it to make it glitchy. I have a 32gb class 10 card that is A-OK but I also tested a 16gb class 6 card I had too and it did the exact same thing on me.
I have narrowed it down to the Camera function. For some reason when I take pix it won't write to the card. Was just on a short vacation with my wife and kids and took a picture of my boys sitting on a canon and lo and behold, it didn't write to the card. I think what I did was take the card out, reboot w/o it in and then once phone was fully powered up, inserted my card and remounted it. Picture wasn't there but could open my media gallery with no issues.
To tell you the truth, I have tried so many ways to figure this out, that they are all jumbled now. Once it happens again, I will pay more attention to how I fix it and post it. Really, I think it all comes down to an issue with the camera and the ROM not mingling together.
Running Steelblue ROM, but had same issues with Personared too.

I'm sure you've done this, but for completeness, some other things to check are to make sure all partitions are primary and that the fat partition is marked "active" (or "boot" depending on which partitioner you're using)
Been awhile since this was an active thread but I did say I would post a solution when I found one. Seems that something is corrupting the sdcard when you take a picture. Not sure what is causing it but here is the fix.
You will lose that picture, but go into your media gallery and once it all populates in, a triangle will scroll in your notification bar that says sdcard failed to read/write. This seems to screw with all kinds of things.
Solution: delete the picture that doesn't have a thumbnail, pull down notification bar and hit the error message. Unmount sdcard and force stop your media gallery. Remount the sdcard and close out your settings. Reopen your media gallery and you should be good to good. Simple as that. No reboot, battery pull or reformatting needed.
Seems that camera corrupts something during during read/write and it trickles through all SD files, including OR folders.

[Q] USB Mass storage mode not working after root

After the root procedure I don't seem to have any ability to use USB Mass storage.
Windows reports it as an empty drive, linux will show the device as connecting and assigns it a /dev/sdx device, but when you attempt to mount or fdisk, it reports no medium.
Any one else having similar issues?
I could always try a reset to factory defaults after unrooting, but I really don't see what rooting could have done.
I used the manual method and had to run zerg several times, however beyond that no other files where modified.
I've already reverted /data/local.prop to stock, no help.
Any one have any other insights?
I had to uninstall motohelper to get USB mass storage working.

When you take a picture, does it save to your sdcard? Sounds completely unrelated huh? Well, this phone seems to have an issue with the sdcard randomly becoming read only. I have had that issue multiple times now and usually it's solved by restarting the phone. Well, I seen your issue today and didn't remember if I had tried to use it as mass storage since rooting it so I tried....no luck. Took a pic, it looked like it saved, didn't get any error, but could not find the pic in my gallery. Then I tried to take a screenshot and got the read only error. So I just took my sdcard out and made a copy of it to my pc, put it back in and rebooted my phone, it's all good now, imagine that. Needless to say, i'm backing up all my apps right now before doing anything else. Then gonna backup my contacts too.
motohelper... Sounds like a stock app...
did you just rm the apk?

I had to reinstall all the drivers through motohelper to get it to work as well =/
No problems now though~
I was able to get my sdcard recognized again but still could not use it as mass storage device, never had a problem with this before root. Did factory reset and all is well.
There is no possible way root caused the issue at all. It stopped working for me once I installed moto drivers, but shows the device with mass storage under it in usb portal mode.

Well then it's one hell of a coincidence! Before root, w/motodrivers, worked fine, after root w/motodrivers, didn't work, after unrooting, w/motordrivers, works again.
Same thing happened with my phone. Actually now returned because of all the issues I kept having hardware wise and wound up going and getting the HTC Vivid. So if any of yall switch I will see you when a Forum is made for this device.

I have until the 24th of this month to decide if I want to keep this phone or not. I unrooted yesterday, will see how it goes this week. I'm not trying to pay big money for a phone right now so we'll see how it plays out.
OK I give up. The problem is intermittent. I'm going to do a log cat next time cause I'm getting about irritated. SOme times it works fine some times not. I've not unrooted or changed anything since the initial problem.
The only thing I can possibly thing is that some of the commands installed by busybox is screwing up the works.
Short of that nothing REALLY changes that could affect the operation of the phone.
What doesn't bare that idea out however is the fact that it EVER works.
**STUMPED**
It does the exact same thing on a completely unmodified phone. Therefore, it's nothing you did to it that's cause the problem.
I have the same thing on mine but it was something with the format of the card.
I flipped it to windows media sync mode then backed up the card and after the backup I unmounted the card and let the atrix format it.
I had the card in a atrix 1 before I put it in the atrix 2 so I do not know if this is the case or not.
This has now been working with out a problem for 4 days now
Same thing happened to my phone, I never rooted it.
Confirmed user error.

Thank you seraphielx! Shortly before finding this thead, I'd noticed that I had a rather large number of files in the LOST.DIR on my SDcard. Which coincided with the seemingly random disappearance of some of the apps I'd moved there. And when I pulled the SDcard to back it up on my PC, there were nearly 600mb worth of files in the LOST.DIR. Most of which were photos, plus (I think) some apps. Thank God I make regular backups!
I believe the problem, at least in my case, has to do with the fact that I could pull the SDcard without first pulling the battery; which I did when I swapped the stock 2gb card for my 32gb card right after I bought the phone. Thus corrupting many files, and probably the file system on the card as well.
After backing up what remained of my storage files, I tried to format the SDcard in the Atrix2, but It wouldn't let me select the option to format, and neither could I unmount the SDcard. So I powered down the phone, pulled the card and formatted it from my PC. Poped it back in the phone, powered up, and was then able to format it with the Atrix2. Since then I've had no issues with accessing usb mass storage, nor with disappearing apps and photos.
Thanx again for the assistance!
For me sometimes it takes a few minutes before I can access sdcard from PC.
Usually it works instantly after phone reboot while not plugged in pc, then it takes ages...

Update: OK, I can't unmount my SDcard, again. Which, of course, means I can't access usb mass storage anymore. The only I've changes made since my last post were to install some apps and change some status bar icons via Rom Toolbox, and I can't believe that has anything with the issue.
If I do a factory reset, will I need to root again?
If you have any apps installed on your SD card you will continue to have problems.

Confused about (internal) storage

Hello,
I am little confused about phones storage. Hope someone can help me.
OK, When I first configured my phone I installed TitaniumBackup and restored all my apps and data from my former phone HTC Sensation. Then I copied Sensations SD Card data to Nexus' internal storage via Windows. For example also the folder "WhatsApp".
When I connect the phone to my PC I can see its internal storage. In the folder "WhatsApp/Database" I can find some files like "msgstore-2014-01-17.1.db.crypt" or "msgstore-2014-01-16.1.db.crypt".
Now I open ES FileExplorer, go to device/sdcard: there I can see mainly the same folders I copied from Sensation to Nexus. WhatsApp is also there. When I look inside I can't find any files like "msgstore-2014-01-17.1.db.crypt" I see on "internal storage" via PC. but I see others like "msgstore-2014-01-24.1.db.crypt". What?! I don't understand that.
OK, next Test: Via PC I copy a file named 123test.txt to the Whatsapp Folder. Again I look via ES FileExplorer on the phone, what happens. Ola, I can see 123test.txt in device/sdcard. But not e.g. "msgstore-2014-01-17.1.db.crypt". Aha... strange.
And while writing this question I had to copy the filename of "msgstore-2014-01-17.1.db.crypt" from Windows explorer to paste it here. And now I can see also "msgstore-2014-01-17.1.db.crypt" in device/sdcard on my phone, but not the ohers like "msgstore-2014-01-16.1.db.crypt". I touch a file in Windows Explorer on "internal storage" and after that it's copied to device/sdcard?
This can't be normal?! That's zero transparent... and weird...
Can someone please clear it up for me?!
THANKS!

Maybe it's because I haven't finished my coffee yet, but I reread your post a few times and only sort of understand what you are trying to figure out...
Since the Nexus doesn't have external storage, then the Internal Storage you see in Windows is /sdcard. It sounds like maybe either the database files from your Sensation might not have transferred over to the Nexus correctly, or the older file maybe was rewritten with the version of the app on the Nexus? Or if it just doesn't show up when you copy the file to the phone while it is still plugged in, then it might not show up in a file manager on the phone until you unplug it and then the phone rescans the media to sync the contents so file managers can display everything. This is common behavior with the MTP set up. Let me know if I am not on the right path with the info and I'll see if I can help clarify more.

Hello es0tericcha0s,
what I do not understand is: Why do I see on my PC other files then on my phone?
Why I looked at that: On phones with SD Card I backuped all my SD Card before ROM changes. Then I just copy my backup back to SD Card. But now I am not sure what to backup. If I backup my internal storage via PC I have definitily not the current data in it!
I don't understand that behaviour?!

I'd have to go with good old buggy MTP. I've seen lots of these 'ghost files' in Windows explorer with my previous phone (GNEX). If both file manager apps and for instance adb shell do not show files that Windows explorer via MTP does show, you can safely assume Windows explorer is wrong.
Tip: for a more secure data transfer, copy your /sdcard content from your PC to the N5 using the adb push command. I believe there are even GUIs for adb nowadays if you don't like working on the command line.
Guys... I still do not understand that thing...
I installed CM11. Copied via Windows Explorer my Titanium Backup folder to internal storage. Nothing else. Then I restored WhatsApp to see what happens. Everything worked fine. Whatsapp is OK but has no media file I sent or received. OK, I can copy them from my backup to internal memory. BUT I CAN'T SEE ANY WHATSAPP FOLDER in my Windows Explorer. But in my phone file explorer I can see it!
This can't be normal!
How does one can make a consistent backup of it's phone with that behaviour?!
EDIT: After I rebooted the phone I can also see the WhatsApp folder in Windows... :/
Like I said: MTP is buggy. For reliable file transfers via usb use adb push and pull commands.

This is sooo strange...
I made a TWRP backup. Then I used adb pull /sdcard/ /sdcardbackup to copy my storage with my TWRP backup to PC. But I can't find the backup on my PC after adb finished the copy job. Where is it? I searched with the explorer on the phone:
/sdcard/ -> I am redirected to /storage/emulated/legacy - this view is identical with my backup on pc
/storage/sdcard0/ -> I am redirected to /storage/emulated/legacy - same as above
/storage/emulated/ -> There are folders 0, legacy and TWRP and there I found my backup.
Shouldn't I find TWRP backups on my sdcard, storage, emultade, legacy or I don't know how the place is called?!
OK, I try to copy thios TWRP backup to my PC:
- via PC: I can't, because I see only the "internal storage"
via adb: I can't, too: E:\Nexus 5\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb pull /storage/emulated/TWRP /TWRPbackup DOES NOT WORK
BUUHUUUUUUUUUU unbelievable
How do you check where your data is? I don't...
You used a relative path for the destination folder, meaning that folder was created on the location where your adb executable is. Look for it there or use an absolute path for your destination folder.

You're supposed to adb pull from /sdcard not /storage
If you didn't change directory (cd) in cmd / terminal, then your pulled data is in the directory that opens by default in cmd. Open cmd to see what path you let it default to. Often c:\users\username
Don't forget if you're in windows, you need to
adb pull /sdcard/source \destination
And linux
adb pull /sdcard/source /destination

Hello,
copy command should be ok. hoever. Why is TWRP backup saved to location /storage/emulated/TWRP, not on "internal memory"?
Really guys... this can't be normal. is there something wrong with my phone or ROM?!

No, it's something wrong with you. I'd be easier to copy the backup to the phone memory visible to a PC using a root explorer and then copy it to the PC that way if you can't get adb working

Issue with HTC U11 on Lineage 18.01 with SD Card Showing Up

I posted this the ROM section also but wanted to try and get some fresh eyes on this see if anyone else could come up with something.
I need to find someone who knows sdcards and how it works in Android really well. At this point I am convinced its either something in a file or permissions as to why the SDCard is not showing up in Storage.
I have two cards I can put them both in another U11 recognizes them both can format them both and neither is encrypted. I put them in this U11.
I can move stuff to them in TWRP yet I cannot mount them in TWRP and they don't show in Android.
So we know the cards are good. We know the slot is good. That leaves a file, setting or permission in Android 11 or this rom.
