How to get better signal? - General Questions and Answers

So I recently got a LG g4 and was using a Samsung s5.
With the s5 I was not able to get any signal at work. Was running cm13.
But with the LG g4 running stock I get 3 bars.
Is there a way to get better reception?

Bad service?

Alright, so currently I am on aokp milestone 5 and I've been getting very poor WiFi and 3g/4g signal.
Is anyone else having that issue?

My service has been top notch, but I am on Paranoid rom.
Anyone of aokp who has bad signal?

I'm going to do a clean install of cm10 stable and see if it fixes it.

I flashed the stable version of CM10 last night from stock ICS 4.0.4 and my signal sucks. I tried flashing the new VRLJ1 Radio + RPM and still nothing. I used to get 3-4 bars at home now I barely get 2.
I am looking for a ROM that can fix this problem.
Let me know if you find a fix.
Thanks
You might want to check w/vzw to see if work is being done in your area (towers down, etc). My signal has been solid and improved on eclipse 4/new j1 radio. Was on liquid 7 prior with no issues signal wise. If anything signals are improving.

Great advice to follow, sometimes its not always your radio but rather maintenance, if the problem arose switching to your said ROM, ask in that specific if anyone else has the same problem, or switch between radios and see what works for you. It is known that not all radios are great for everyone, sometimes an old one works better for specific people in different areas

Fwiw- aosp ROMs don't seem to have the signal strength compared to touch wiz ROMs. Until ril and kernel source is released there's going to be this issue. However, after flashing the latest jellybean radio I've had much better data and phone signal reception.

So I should switch to a TW ROM in order for the service to improve?

I to have bad signal. At my house my phone jumps from 4G to 3G. I do not have problems with the phone everything else work flawlessly.
My wife has an old 3G phone (first gen) it works great. My old 3G Driod X gets great signal. The wife got a LG Envy 4G phone a few weeks ago. Always has 4G she even gets 4G on the bottom floors of the hospital. My SIII get no service. I think it is a Samsung thing my self.
Samsung doesn't have the best radios, that's for sure.
That being said TW is definitely the way to go if you're in a fringe area. AOSP just can't do it right yet...which is really annoying...
Why are folks comparing signal bars? Its been said time after time that its meaningless. The only way to compare is go into settings/about device and look up the signal -db. I can gurantee aosp signal is no worse than touchwiz...now in fringe coverage areas i believe touchwiz is still slightly better.

T-Mobile weak LTE

Ever since Ive had my nexus 5 Ive noticed weaker lte signal on t-mobile. I have a nexus 4 that has the .33 radio that i flashed and i get lte in more places & better speeds. Both are using the same t-mobile APNs, for example on my nexus 5 half of my home I get HSPA+ and on the other half I do get LTE i guess I'm just in the middle of two towers that reach me. On the nexus 4 though, I always have LTE In my house and In more areas where the nexus 5 doesn't. I then later flashed the cataclysm rom and thought maybe it would help but nothing, I did find a setting within cataclysm to force lte always on and I get even more LTE service than on the nexus 4, but it takes up a lot of battery. My issue is Im back on stock KitKat and dont have that feature and T-Mobile LTE is just weak. Is it just my nexus 5 or have other people expirenced this too?

Have you tried flashing different radios?

I'm located in Forest HIlls, NY On KitKat 4.4, I usually get 3-4 bars, indoors/basement. After updating to 4.4.2, I still get 3-4 bars. Like real estate, it's location, location, location.

Well what other radios are there for the nexus 5?

Do a search for EFS and Modems, there's a thread that has a link to all of them. Some have said earlier radios like from 4.4 get better signal. I'm on 4.4.2 stock radio and didn't see any change from one to another but that's just me. In Brooklyn and Manhattan NYC mostly btw.

Radios are here:

But there's sparse evidence any are better on LTE specifically. In theory, the latest should be the best. I get 4 bars LTE and 30Mbps d/l, yet get 5 bars H+ and 12Mbps d/l...so clearly despite a lower overall signal strength, my download performance remains perfectly acceptable.

N5 and sprint network handover

After the latest S5 announcement I'm now ready for the n5. I am coming from S3 on sprint and for the time being I will stay with sprint. My question is...with Samsung s3 if I install a ROM any ROM CM for example the handover between LTE 3g 2g is sluggish I believe its because of some proprioty software (though I am not sure) is this an issue with the n5? Basically is this CDMA/LTE problem or Samsung?

Really nothing

Its a Sprint problem... Depends on the tower... Sprint used different hardware/contractors.

I understand that but the question surrounds the handoff when there is a custom ROM like CM. When using TW its an non issue. So my question is will the handoff be okay with N5 and CM because the N5 doesn't use the propriatory software Samsung does.

The short answer is yes...just not as bad..
Here is my experience:
I came from a Samsung galaxy nexus that I had about 4 different Roms loaded on. I could never find a 4.4 ROM that would do a good job on LTE/3g handoffs. My favorite ROM ended up being the Avatar 4.2 ROM.
With the gnex, I would be in a known 4g area but it would show 3g until I would cycle the airplane mode.
When I moved to the Nexus 5 three weeks ago, I was hopeful those issues would be over. Right now I'm rooted with the boot loader unlocked but running the stock ROM.
So. far I've tried 2 custom Roms but keep coming back to stock. I still notice the slow radio handoff but it is less frequent and not as often....but still there.
I hope that helps.
Yes it does ty.

Thinking about switching to the G2 from the Note 3

Is there a WiFi tether hack that enables you to use unlimited WiFi tether?
How easy is it to root?

I am really wanting to get rid of my VZW gs4 (since I'm on tmo now anyway) and get a g2 also. I will be following responses to this thread!

i'm not sure about the g2, but i had a razr hd(verizon) that if you went in and changed the code for the wifi hack, you were able to use tethering without having to have it on your data plan...i applied it to my current phone(xperia z) but haven't used the tether option enough to know if the hack worked.
With the extremely quiet threads here in g2 land I have to say I'm starting to wonder if it is going to be the next phone for me...
I want to get a phone on tmo but wondering if I should get the n5 instead. Coming from the gs4 I might miss the ir blaster from time to time, but that may be about it.

I also got a G2 and it is a superior phone over Note 3. But Note 3 is a decent phone too..
I have to say I was on the verge of returning this phone in about 7 days, but since the successful root process last night it's safe to say I'll be keeping it for some time. It was super easy to downgrade and root, now having access to add the audio mods and edit system stuff it has gotten soo much better! Can't wait to try a couple ROMs out now.
Now for my question, what's the deal with the white line issue? Is it autorec related or specific rom related? I wanna try an aosp rom out but not sure about the white line thing.

I had a S4 and sold it within two days. I then had a Note 2 that I traded with someone on Craigslist. There are certain things that I miss from my Note but for the most part this phone has to be one of the best phones that I have had yet. The camera alone is worth going to the G2.

Horrible signal!

So I switched from my Xperia z3 back to a g2 and the signal is horrible!! My nexus 4 gets better signal! Is this a issue with the phone itself or current firmware . I'm currently running cm12 on the g2. I used to get lte almost everywhere with the Xperia and most places with the n4 but I can barely get H+ with the g2??
