Hi everyone,
I've noticed that I can no longer play YouTube videos in the background on my s8+ bought unbranded from the UK.
The video details with the play button still shows up on the AOD or lock screen but pressing the buttons or using the headphone buttons don't work anymore.
Has anyone else noticed this on their device and is there a workaround?
Thanks in advance.
I know this will not provide the same reliable interface as the official YouTube app. But I installed Firefox and a few add-ons to give myself the background play function back on a nonrooted phone (s8+ U.S. version G955U).
My add-ons were 1. A YouTube adblocker
2. Background play fix (since Firefox latest version crippled it, taking Alphabet payoffs perhaps?)
3. Desktop mode always on add-on (since the resolution is crippled on Firefox mobile version)
Since I use Firefox as my primary browser I used the app Lucky Patcher to clone the Firefox app so I can use one for YouTube with add-ons exclusively.
I know this is pretty convoluted. But ask me if you have any questions.

Just use iYTBP. It can be found in the thread below.

Remeved this feature. Buy YouTube red. Or a lot of YouTube player apps in play store.

Google wants you to buy YouTube Red, Samsung's implementation was technically a "cheat".
No wonder they "fixed" it. Google loves $$$.

That is an amazing app but it doesn't allow crop to fit for the S8 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It was explained in a couple of posts in that thread:

Sadly the only workaround is to root your phone.
If you root your phone, you can use our root version of iYTBP and have adblock + background playback + crop to fit feature.

Thanks for the info Laura. I don't think I would be willing to root considering that I would be losing Samsung Pay.
As a workaround I can suggest that if you use chrome browser in desktop mode you can use the same trick as before to play videos at the screen off, this also works with BBC iPlayer via chrome in desktop mode.

sorry for the late reply, i checked and habit browser continues to play youtube videos after screen turned off with these settings.
Goto settings, then Tabs, then Disable (uncheck) :
* Stop hidden tabs
* Stop tabs in the background
if i enable them, the audio stops when I turn off the screen.
hope it works for you, also there is another browser with heaps of great settings like habit browser, called ZuYu browser, it also works with screen off. ZuYu seems more stable.
yes Magisk + iYTBP mod , its work background playing

Laura,
For non rooted devices what if I was able to uninstall stock youtube via this method:

In that case, could you keep iYTBP package name the same as the stock version so that the ROM could recognize it and enable crop to fit? Could that potentially work?

i don't know if it is right to open a new thread so i did it to have a general discussion about youtube and its new upcoming feature
if any mod thinks that this thread should be closed then there is no problem by me
here is an article of what i am talking about
http://youtubecreator.blogspot.sg/2013/09/heads-up-about-upcoming-youtube-mobile.html?m=1
Is this source official? After reading it, I can only think of it as forcing you to download content. YouTube is probably safe, but pushing content to your device without you asking that seems quite absurd. I believe there will be a mechanism to allow this (only to subscribed channels or even a dedicated switch for that).
Seems like a nice feature, but with today's network speeds it's not that much of a problem.
BTW, before adding features, they should fix the UI on both mobile and PC, moving the quality setting to a submenu is a crime (especially when it's on 360p by default when you can play 1080p without any problem).
actually i doubt if that feature will be acting without user's permission but we will see it soon enough
Doubt they will do this. Google is try to get rid of YouTube downloading apps and plug-ins, so why would they purposely force you to download videos?
Sent from my HTC Sensation using XDA Premium HD app
i believe it is just a feature
generally everything is happening for a reason not incidentally

When you watch a video you download it to your computer. After watching it, it is deleted. Everything you see on the web is downloaded to your computer (even this comment). What they might do is to make the videos available for you by pre-caching it, so you can watch them offline. And for the anti-download policy - I believe google will encrypt it somehow. There is more than one way to do this.
It sounds like a list you add videos to which will download all to your phone. Then the downloaded videos will be available while offline. Sounds like a Watch Later feature to me

Something like that, with te difference that you add channels to your list instead of videos, and when new videos are available, they get downloaded to your phone automatically for you to watch them, and afterwards (my guess is a couple of hours or the first watch) they are deleted.
I guess it's more like getting the newspaper to your doorstep each morning.

***UPDATE***
Some issues have been resolved
Plex has been updated
https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/60585-plex-for-android/page-5#entry789763
Testing Plex for Android 3.7.1.286:
1) Still not passing 5.1 audio to my receiver (DTS, AC3, DD)
2) App shortcut not in the launcher or chainfires sideloader
3) Still no leanback interface.
4) Forcing Direct Play is still hit or miss, transcoding still my occor
PlexPass has also been updated to 3.7.1.286 can someone please report if issues 1 & 3 of the above issues have been resolved in that app?
Better to report this on the plex forums.

yeah I haven't seen any improvements after the update. Seems like almost nothing has changed.
Kodi is at RC3 and to me there has been a huge improvement there but still not perfect. I will be happy when plex fixes their app though.
Plex will never have pass through until google adds it to androids media player. Seems like I write this somewhere every few days.

I dont have any faith that Plex will fix the shortcut or leanback interface for non-plex pass app anytime soon. This is probably by design. I feel like they are doing everything possible to push users towards purchasing the plex plass. I paid for the app on android and ios, but i still cant use it on my NP or Xbox unless I have a pass. Very annoying.

The leanback (Android TV) Plex Pass version and the standard Mobile/TV version have different interfaces. Modifying the apk will only let you launch the apk from the leanback launcher the layout will still be Mobile/TV. What people without a Plex Pass membership want is the Android TV version because it's a better design for the Nexus Player remote and it also adds your Plex media to the leanback launcher page, this is probably the features most Nexus Player want from Plex. The two APK's are totally different and I believe the Android TV version is a larger apk size.

Really? Interesting. I'm talking about changing the settings directly in the Plex app.
Question: Did you get your Plex app from Amazon's App Store or the Google Play Store? I've heard somewhere that they may be fundamentally different, which blows my mind that developer would take on THAT kind of madness, but I digress...
I'm using the PLEX Pass version that came with the NP. I've been able to update it via Google Play.

Umm I was referring to the NON PlexPass version - just the regular Plex app that can be sideloaded quite easily. You can enable the TV interface from settings. I have no idea what the scoop is on the PlexPass app.

Dumbest thing I've read in a very long time. For a large proportion of YouTubers it is their job. That's like pirating an album then telling the artist to go work in a shop if they want to make a living. Mong.

I refuse to watch ads. However I understand the dilemma of blocking them. If YouTube Red was available in my country, I'd stop using adblockers completely. I hate the concept of advertisement in its current form. If I want something I'm gonna decide to buy it myself. If I need info, I'm gonna use Google to get it. Showing me intrusive ads only makes me hate you and your products altogether.

Hi guys, in this thread i will show you a quick and easy fix for the YouTube app where videos are displayed behind the notch on OnePlus 6 running Oxygen OS 9 based on Android 9 Pie. I saw this problem a lot on XDA Developers forum and OnePlus official forum. People are complaining a lot about this problem.
First things first, my name is Adrian. I am from Romania and my native language is not English.
Back to the YouTube fix. After i read about this problem in the OnePlus official forum, it's not OnePlus fault. This is Google's fault (Google made the YouTube app, not OnePlus). They want you to embrace the notch, so to speak.
So, to fix this:
- close the YouTube app
- go to Play Store > Menu > My apps & games > scroll down until you find the YouTube app > tap on it > tap on UNINSTALL button
- tap on the 3 dots button on the upper right corner and uncheck Enable auto update to prevent YouTube app from updating again on itself.
Doing this, you uninstall just the update for the YouTube app (not the app)
If you running a custom rom and you flash just the Pico GApps, you can download the YouTube app from here: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...ease/youtube-13-15-55-3-android-apk-download/
It's seems that, in older versions of YouTube app (13.15.61) the problem it's not present. When you pinch to zoom on videos, they are displayed without crossing the notch zone.
I hope this thread helps everybody and it's very possible to fix the problem in other notch phones (Huawei P20 Pro, Pocophone F1, etc)

The notch problem in YouTube has already been discussed in the main thread for stable OOS 9.0. Use the search button (search for YouTube)! One workaround is to use Tasker to hide the notch in YouTube. See e.g. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77696736&postcount=1188

Just install the app called YouTube Vanced from their website. It will just skip right over the ads like they're not even there. You'll need to install that plus MicroG in order to be able to login.. IF you use and have Google Chrome browser running you need to force stop it and disable it until you're done signing in otherwise the sign in will just sit there and not work.. You can enable it again after it's installed and you're logged in to.. Choose one of the NON ROOT versions and install both YouTube Vanced and MicroG found here. https://www.mediafire.com/folder/773e97cz2ezx1/AddFree_Youtube_BackgroundPlay_Enabled
They released a manager (check their website) so you can check for updates and install the app and requirements easily.

When you use either samsung internet or beta ver., in their bucket under app settings they call ad-ons, there is an ad-block app selection called ad-block for YouTube(you'll see it in the drop-down menu), and that's probably the same one the other gentleman already responded to you with?

lol I remember when you tube did not have any adds, then it was short ads every few videos, then it was ads at the beginning and end of video now there are more ads than videos. I would love to strip all the ads out of you tube, but don't want any malware installed on my phone.... lol

I use utube less and less now especially for movies. Give Google time and they will screw up the their best apps.
Remember how good gmail -was- over a decade ago?
Liberals think everything needs fixed and proceed to do so until broke:silly:

My advice would be plain and simple.
Use Samsung Internet Browser.
I know it's not perfect, but for me not bad at all.
I'm sure it's a good alternative.?
I really got so fed up with YouTube ads that i looked for a good straight forward alternative...
(I also did not want to use YouTube Vance etc..)
Saw remarks about Samsung internet browser,
started using it,
Very surprised, it was fast smooth etc.
With Samsung offering , free to install, add ons, to the browser....
AdBlockers and also a free to install, YouTube AdBlocker,
See screenshot.
i must admit i have not seen one advert, when browsing YouTube.
Note
I'm logged into YouTube with my Google account.
So my advice is to use Samsung Internet Browser
to browse YouTube until you get a better option.?
Good luck.

This and notifications making me stick with Android ..
Cercube is available on iOS too . IN jb you can install tweak in even latest version of youtube app.
The beauty of vanced if you turn your screen times off
YouTube will continue to play
Perfect for me as I do a lot of driving...
Just tried it with Samsung browser screen times out youtube stops playing
Something for you to maybe think about?
I use YouTube Premium to block all ads while still supporting my favorite creators.
Vote for Vanced. The latest version has an option to remove (+) button even. It allows to hide all these distracting tiles, gifs, stories etc, leaving the pure video clips only.
I'm a long time Adguard user, no adds in apps, browser, nowhere
