Updating Old HTC Kernel with newer commits from CAF and LineageOS - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey Guys,
Ok so here is my situation.
I have a really old HTC Kernel that is lacking way behind in commits. Due to this, this is why LineageOS 14.1 is failing to build. Of course I could use a ugly hack and apply the commits manually of the Android Source that requires them but this is quite a ugly hack.
This is how the kernel looks like right now.
CAF Kernel from Dec, 2014 + Code removed ( like comments) by HTC + HTC Open Source Software
I want to go back to "CAF Kernel from Dec, 2014", Apply all of the Latest Commits and then apply the "HTC Open Source Software" on top of the Kernel.
What is the best way to do this, If I merge the Kernel, I have a ton of Conflicts and that isn't really efficient, pretty much the whole kernel is a conflict with extra new files added.
I think the best thing to do is to port the device to the normal android_kernel_cyanogen_msm8916 (because it is a Snapdragon 410 Phone) but I don't know how to do this and don't think it will work because it is missing HTC Features in the Kernel.
The latest source from the last device maintainer is here:
https://github.com/PatrikKT/android_kernel_htc_a31ul/commits/cm-12.1
https://github.com/HTC-MSM8916/android_kernel_htc_msm8916/commits/cm-13.0
I am the next Device Maintainer, hopefully.....

[DEV] Porting kernel 3.10.x to d2 for Lollipop

As we know, Android Lollipop is being released soon, and it requires a kernel that is 3.10.y, which is not available for our device. I'm not great with kernels and would in no way consider myself a kernel developer, but I have applied the neccessary patches to get the kernel version up to 3.10.0, which can be found here https://github.com/frap129/android_kernel_samsung_d2. Because I'm not a kernel developer, I am looking for some help in at least getting this kernel somewhat ready before the release of 5.0, so we can all get the latest update ASAP. Any and all help is apreciated!
Does your kernel compile and boot on cm11? If it does, there shouldn't be much problems in getting it working on L.
Any news? Does it compile?

nope android 5.0 doesnt require new kernel, you could build it on 3.0.y like i am doing on my Note 2 oh and as far as i know new nexus devices are still on 3.4.y

yes, but the new Samsung tablets (at least) are being shipped with the 3.10.x kernels.. 'course they're still running kitkat at the moment, but definitely cannot wait to see if/when they get kit kat.
I'll have to report back later after I take pictures of the 'about phone' page lol [if you want proof anyway]

I know samsung does things like that (i have few other devices from them) but hey thats samsung and they are lazy so they dont want to update kernel version after device is relesed so they do this not to feel outdated on softwere side
Whoops! I read somewhere that the newly expanded SELinux permissions had some dependency on the 3.10.y kernel. Oh well, I guess Ill just test it anyways so I can brag that I have a newer kernel than anyone else if it works

That would definitely be awesome! Be sure to report back your results. I'm not an experienced ROM or kernel developer, but I'll be attempting on bringing a pure AOSP 5.0.0_r2 to my GS3. I'm not sure how successful I'll be, but my first step involved me planning on copying over our vendor repo from CM's M11 or M12 release (whenever that gets out) and trying to build Lollipop against it.

I'm very new to the AOSP build process and didn't have much luck last night getting the CM device sources to play nicely with AOSP. I'm finding it difficult to find any relevant guides on porting over the CM device trees to pure AOSP. If you or anyone else can help by explaining the process or pointing to a guide that I may have missed, I'd be grateful. Plus the more people we have collaborating on his, the better our chances of getting Lollipop on our devices.
I'm working on porting 5.0 to our phone, tweaked the device tree and got the build running but (as expected) i'm running into SEpolicy hell. The new selinux implementation in lollipop is proving to be trouble. I've just made a few more edits and the build is moving along, I'll post results shortly.
If anyone cares to help I'll walk you through what I've done so far. One thing to note is you need to adjust vendorsetup.sh to say full_d2lte-eng instead of cm_d2lte-eng and create AndroidProducts.mk that points at full_d2lte.mk (you can use the hammerhead device tree as a reference to do this)
That will get your device tree to regester properly. If you don't do the above you'll get a "no config makefile found" error when you try to select d2lte with lunch.
As far as the actual tree, you're gonna wanna grab device/samsung/d2lte, device/samsung/msm8960-common, vendor/samsung/d2lte, vendor/samsung/msm8960-common, vendor/cm, vendor/cyngn, and kernel/d2.
You'll also need a couple things from /hardware, namely hardware/samsung. There's a couple things you'll need to remove from msm8960-common in /device, I can't remember the specific file name but the error message will tell you.
Follow those instructions and you'll get where I'm at, with the build crapping out on SEpolicy

Wow, this is awesome. It sounds like you've gotten the furthest than any of us. I appreciate the instructions, but is there any chance you could push your repos to GitHub? And do you think the SELinux stuff you're running into has anything to do with our device being on the 3.4 kernel instead of 3.10?

It's not a kernel thing so much as a device tree thing. (Kitkat vs lollipop) the policy.conf (along with a few other things) in the device tree is designed for kitkat and isn't playing very nice with the 5.0 source. I'm trying to bang it out a bit by swapping a few C and header files in the build core.
As for my last build, my tweaks got me past where I was but now I'm hanging on a new set of SElinux errors.
I've been at this for less than 12 hours so given that timeframe this looks promising.
I'm trying to think of what the best way to go about this is. I could either try to adapt the tree for the new source or I could try to adapt the source for the old tree (use KitKat SElinux implementation on lollipop). The latter would have more success with root but the former is the correct way to do it (and would get us cyanogenmod 12 faster once they start nightlies, as I can push the changes to gerrit)

Again, any chance you can post your source? You don't have to try and work on it on your own. The more people that look at the progressions you made, the better our chances are at success.

Cyanogen is updating sources to lolipop right now and omni has semi working source so it will be easier to port 5.0 since we wont need to edit device tree that much

Yes but, they have a tentative deadline of dec. 1st to start pushing out the first nightlies. We likely won't be in the first wave either, since d2 is now 3 generations out of date.
I'd much rather just port aosp and have it in 2 weeks rather than wait 3 weeks to even begin work.
Side note. If/when I get this working I'm calling it PotatOS
Managed to work past my problem with SElinux for now, the build has now moved on to... another set of errors!

[ROM][7.1.2_r8][UNOFFICIAL] LineageOS 14.1 for Nexus 7 2012 (grouper)
*** Disclamer
By downloading and installing this ROM you agree that you do so at
your own risk, and that you understand that it probably voids your
warranty. (But does anyone still have an active warranty on this 2012
device?)
Introduction
@AndDiSa's AOSP 7 builds look pretty nice, but I needed something that seamlessly upgrades from CM13. @GtrCraft who provided our CM13 builds has moved on to other devices, so we need a new CM maintainer. I may not be the right person for that job... but I can at least share the build I made for myself. Perhaps someone will be motivated to join the fun or even take over.
Installation instructions
Back up your data and previous ROM with TWRP 3.0.2 or 3.1.0.
Download from link below.
Wipe system, cache, dalvik.
Also wipe data unless you are coming from CM13.
Install the ROM.
Optionally add opengapps-pico.
With default settings it will give an error about insufficient space. To avoid that, first copy this gapps-config-grouper.txt file, perhaps edit it to your taste (instructions here), then copy to the device in the same directory as the opengapps zip. The opengapps updater-script will look for it there when you install opengapps.
Reboot.
WAIT for system to settle before you decide it is slow. Some of the app optimization which used to happen during initial boot now seems to happen in the background. When it's finished, responsiveness will improve.
If you use ext4, run fstrim.
There are ways to automate this, but I just run this app after each ROM upgrade, plus roughly once a week, after large batches of app updates from Play Store, or whenever my tablet starts to feel sluggish.

There are plenty of guides to building CM. Those guides are still relevant with the possible exceptions of their URLs. Assuming you have read enough such guides to have the general idea of how to build a ROM from source, here is one way you can set up your source tree to mimic mine.
In a clean directory, perhaps ~/android/lineageos-14.1/ :
Code:
repo init -u git://github.com/LineageOS/android.git -b cm-14.1
git clone https://github.com/aperomsik/lineageos_local_manifests.git .repo/local_manifests -b cm-14.1

Recent version of repo doesn't seem to explicitly support '-c' parameter any more to reduce the download size (mine have been around 30GB). Thanks for these instructions; still, I would like to know how you integrated the required changes for 14.1 grouper.

Just took a look at those. I have been using TheMuppets at github for the proprietary components, having needed to patch the nvidia components due to an old GNU-ism (gcc extension that was eventually formalised).
Saw that you got the broadcom et al components from your "ads" git repo and wanted to know if there was any reason not to use TheMuppets (or if, indeed, you sourced them from there and modified them), that I can learn from.
Thanks again.

Can confirm that this works - now I just need to find the magic in the code. Also, how did kernel/timeconst.pl not need to be replaced with timeconst.bc and kernel/Makefile not need to be amended to use bc instead of perl? I was getting a compile error because of this in the grouper kernel tree.

The "ads" git repos referenced in my manifests are AndDiSa's. My repos are labelled "aaopt".
As stated in OP my goal with this ROM is to continue GtrCraft's CM13 work now that he has moved on to other devices. He had been following AndDiSa's proprietary components from AOSP so I just continued that way. In fact I took it a step further by using AndDiSa's kernel directly, not (yet?) seeing a clear reason to maintain my own. I just want to do the minimum amount of work needed to keep somewhat up to date with upstream LineageOS and take advantage of AndDiSa's device-specific performance improvements from the AOSP side.

Hey there! Will there be a ROM for Tilapia? I'd be nice to try it on it. I'm not a programmer but as I noticed building for Grouper and Tilapia is just a little different.
I think You can just flash the grouper recovery and flash the ROM.
From one day of full usage:
- The charging is a bit slow, i don't know if it's a big battery or the power flow is low
- There is lagging, like the ROM isn't optimized yet, slowdowns, applications are usually giving me stopped working etc...
- The camera bug i mentioned above, when u take picture it looks pixelated
I'll do more reviews like this if the updates keep coming
Cannot use the video option in the camera app.
The camera app force closes.

Here is a build I am testing, in which all I did was sync sources with upstream. It feels somewhat less laggy to me... not sure if it is due to Lineage changes, 7.1.1_r9, or the fact that I used newer opengapps.
Camera issue is interesting -- I have a shot in my camera folder from 11-29 which looks better. Current shots claim to have the same resolution but file size is much smaller, which suggests the wrong jpeg quality setting was used. Something to dig for.
Regarding charging, are you saying it charges more slowly with this ROM than with others? Charging speed varies widely for me but recently it hasn't been that bad. If your hardware is behaving the expected charging time from nearly empty is supposed to be 3-4 hours. Over time the connector gets loose and then charging can take much longer. There are plenty of charging-related threads around here including some which say to replace the USB port and one which says take out the existing port and put it back in. Tried that on the worst of my family's tablets and it helped for a day or so but then went back to old slow charging speed.

Compiling Sultan's LineageOS 14.1 with OMS

I'm currently running official LOS14.1 but have been wanting to switch for a while. One thing that bothers me is the lack of OMS (Substratum support). AFAIK this was implemented officially in LOS15, for which there is an unofficial build, but I also want to have Sultan's tweaks (even willing to compromise on Nougat instead of Oreo because the highest version of LOS that Sultan modified is Nougat).
Sultan's LOS14.1 (which I probably will install even without OMS for now just because it's better than official 14.1) looks awesome but it lacks OMS, although someone managed to build it with OMS. I tried PMing this person and asking for help but didn't get an answer yet, and I don't have any experience in building Android (I do know my way around Linux).
So my question is, how do I go about building Sultan's LOS14.1 with OMS?
In here there are a few methods for merging the necessary changes, all of which I don't understand how to do in the context of Sultan's LOS. He (Sultan) only links to the source for his bacon kernel and a local_manifest.xml file, which I don't know how to use. I think there are some files missing but I don't know where I should get them from.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?
1. Fork sultan's patcher repo
2. Get the OMS patches from LineageOMS (e.g. frameworks/base: use command "git format patch HEAD~52" to create all of the patches)
3. Move the OMS patches into patcher (don't forget to add related lines to patcher.sh and unpatcher.sh)
4. Replace sultan's patcher repo with your one and add substratum/interfacer to the local_manifest.xml
5. Sync lineage 14.1 source code
6. Build

[Dev] Error after merging newer CAF tag

Hello people! I have an MSM8960 Android device called VEGA S5, it's a normal MSM8960 phone that came with Android 4.1.2 (actually, upgraded to. release with android 4.0.3) and Linux 3.4.0.
I had been trying to merge the newer CAF tag to develop newer android roms. There is a phone with similar spec, and that device runs an unofficial LineageOS 18. The phone is Sony Tsubasa, so on the device side I'm trying to use tsubasa's device trees with some (a lot of) edits and that seems to work quite well.
The manufacturer kernel is in CAF tag M8960AAAAANLYA1741J . I applied the manufacturer changes on top of this tag. (https://github.com/HexagonWin/vs5lineagekerneltemp/commit/4a141d0b8257d244e24aba0aa14afa8756db4ffa)
Oh, and the kernel repo is here : https://github.com/HexagonWin/vs5lineagekerneltemp.git
After it, I merged the CAF tag LNX.LA.2.7-01110-8960.0. This is kitkat.
After I merged it, I was able to fix most of the build errors I get. I couldn't solve some of the camera parts, so I just temporarily disabled the camera stuffs, from the makefile and things.
However, i wasn't able to fix this error here : https://pastebin.com/BFGYUBCx
It says that functions like "msm_rotator_buf_sync" are undeclared on drivers/char/msm_rotator.c and many other files.
I tried grepping on the kernel tree, found out that all of those stuffs are already declared in "include/linux/sync.h"!
And "include/linux/sync.h" header file is also mentioned on .c files like drivers/char/msm_rotator.c .
Why would this error be happening? I don't know C well, but I see that all of those are being declared correctly.
I also tried comparing to similar phone's kernels, like htc-msm8960 and sony-msm8x60, but I see that the parts with error is all similar with those phone's kernel...
Thanks
+++ I also merged CAF tag LA.AF.1.1-01410-8064.0 later, this is android lollipop (5) tag. I first merged it on my test repository, but after I saw that nothing changed with the issue I have currently, I just commited the thing to github.
+++ The similar devices I'm keep seeing things from are
- Sony Xperia V (sony-tsubasa) and other "mint" family sony devices
- HTC Evo 4G LTE (htc-jewel) and other msm8960 based htc devices
- LG Optimus LTE II (lg-d1lsk) this phone has unofficial cm11 ported

How big is the BlissROMs source code file for building unofficial build for ARM devices? Also help about building from the source code.

I want to build my unofficial build for my phone, HTC Desire 816. But I have a limited data plan, and I worried I will running out of my data by downloading a huge source code with unnecessary files for other architectures, phones etc. And I'm just need the ARM and important files.
Also I got these repos from Tarkzim's forum at LineageOS unofficial for HTC Desire 816:
Device tree
Kernel
Vendor
Well, I didn't have any experience at Android development. So maybe can someone give me a guide too?
I'm just know the preparations on the documentation and it's ready, but the steps are confusing for me.
Or maybe if peoples are have their time maybe can someone make the official build?
Maybe it such out of BlissROMs, but I really want to Blissify my phone. Because LineageOS are too plain, no good features like smart charging etc. It just looks a normal Android build from AOSP source.
