TWRP not installing - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

I recently unlocked my T-Mobile HTC U11 and I'm trying to flash TWRP recovery on it. However, when I enter the command "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1.img", command prompt gives me an error "FAILED (remote: Not allowed on PRODUCTION device)." My Fastboot screen shows me:
FastBoot
Product name - QC_Reference_Phone
Variant - MSM UFS
Bootloader version -
Baseband version -
SECURE BOOT - PRODUCTION
SECURE STATE - S-ON
DEVICE STATE - UNLOCKED (U)
***Software status: Official ***
Any Help would be appreciated

I haven't unlocked yet, but did you try and use htc_fastboot.exe instead or vanilla fastboot? Not sure if it is required or not.

Well this is my first HTC phone so I'm not exactly sure what htc_fastboot.exe is but if I find a link or something I will check that out. Thanks :good:

Did you unlock the boot loader from htcdev with the code that they emailed you with? If the boot loader is locked it will reject the twrp flash.

I tried that and it did install correctly but now when I go to Reboot to Recovery, it says " Your device can't be check for corruption. Please lock the bootloader" and proceeds to reboot my phone. I tried to lock my bootloader with fastboot but when I type "fastboot oem lock" it gives an error saying "Failed (remote: unknown command)"

When booting to TWRP use bootloader mode(does not install TRWP on Device), Installing TRWP requires Download Mode(replaces stock recovery with TWRP).

Once you've installed the RUU, use ADB to push 4ext recovery, then reboot into recovery and flash the Supervisor 3.1.3 file - once you then reboot into the full system again you will have root access and can install the 4ext updater from the Play Store and update recovery to the latest version.

Simon your DS was S-ON and you got it S-OFF with this procedure.
You pushed the 4ext recovery on a S-ON bootloader, right?

For the people, like me, who have only done the HTCdev unlock ( S-ON ), it's quite easy to update the software/ROM using the RUU.
After downloading the RUU from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1857478 I just immediately ran it, but it failed with an error along the lines of : RUU, security fail! update fail!
So after a bit of googling around I figured that the RUU might simply not be happy with the phone being in an unlocked state, so after doing the following the RUU ran successfully :
1. Re-lock the bootloader with the "fasboot oem lock" command. The output after running the command shows the lock process was successful but moaned about something else failing, still not sure what that was. So after doing this my phone was kinda stuck in the bootloader, where it says ***relocked*** at the top and ***security warning!*** right underneath it. Everytime I reboot or powercycle it would just boot straight back into the bootloader with the warnings, which worried me a little bit.
2. In the bootloader I selected fastboot and connected the USB cable, and then I ran the RUU again. This time it completed successfully after some time. My HTC sync was installed but not running, so seems like that isn't even needed ?
And that's actually it. This process obviously puts the phone in a relocked state, and an overall factory configuration, it also restores the recovery ROM to the factory image or whatever.
No success
Hi,
I try to root my S-off /XTC Clip/ device, BUT:
1. 4ext pushed with adb - OK
2. I try to install recovery - 4ext wants busybux
3. I downloaded busybox - but it wants a rooted devices I got a message that "unrooted device" and busybox is closed
So I don't have recovery menu
What could be the solution ?

Won't boot into recovery

It all started yesterday where i was trying to update (InsertCoin) which for some reason made my phone shut down mid-way through the installation process...
I had to reboot my phone back into recovery to wipe system/cache/data to reinstall...For some reason this wiped/damaged everything but the bootloader ofc.
(Bye go all my pictures, whatsapp conversations etc...)
This made me not being able to boot into my recovery aswell
I still can't get back into my recovery, and i've tried flashing the recovery over and over again via fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
When i try to flash the recovery, it succeeds but when i try to boot into it, it blinks the splash screen with odd intervals, i dont know if this means that its trying over and over again...I'm sort of desperate here...any help?
sidenote here: I'm in linux
you should've updated firmware to hboot 2.22 needed for IC, then you need to install the latest recovery 2.7.1.1 from twrp website
twrp here: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m4ul
new firmware here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2759131
I have not updated it, will go and do that now,
Code:
[email protected]:/media/leon/*censor*/Android/ROMS/Millium$ sudo fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
[sudo] password for leon:
target reported max download size of 800227328 bytes
sending 'zip' (19549 KB)...
OKAY [ 2.466s]
writing 'zip'...
(bootloader) zip header checking...
(bootloader) zip info parsing...
(bootloader) Read zipped android_info fail
FAILED (remote: 99 unknown fail)
finished. total time: 4.305s
Right.....!?
I really don't want to reboot to bootloader at the moment...since the update failed...
Apparently i am S-ON and therefor need to obtain s-off, but i don't have an android system installed..how
s-off required to flash firmware or if s-on, bootloader needs to be re-locked, sorry i assumed you knew that! maybe create a signature giving details of your device for future, it does help.
If you are S-ON ---> Re-lock your bootloader (this will most probably wipe content of your device)
If you are S-OFF ---> no need to re-lock the bootloader.
Copy downloaded .zip to fastboot.exe location (e.g. c:/SDK/platform-tools/fastboot.exe)
Re-name .zip file to firmware.zip
Open command prompt
Boot your device in fastboot mode (vol down + power ===> fastboot)
Connect device to the PC
In command prompt cd to fastboot.exe location
Make sure you have correct modeid and cidnum (type: fastboot getvar all)
Type: fastboot oem lock (if your device is not relocked yet or in case it's S-ON)
Type: fastboot oem rebootRUU and wait for device to reboot
Type: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and wait for process to complete
Sometimes flashing for the first time doesn't work, so flash firmware.zip again just to make sure.
Type: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and wait for process to complete
Type: fastboot reboot
Unlock your bootloader and flash custom recovery if you are going to use custom ROM.
Code:
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)
This ahappens when flashing the firmware
*edit: I have fixed that, but i cannot flash the 2.22 included y you because it has a different modelid, presumably because my m4 isn't the at&t variant.
Will this work?

no that firmware will not update everything that is required, use the firmware zip in the link i gave previously.
you need to change your cid to supercid,,,,very simple to do
Enter the command "fastboot oem readcid". Make a note of your original CID.
enter the command "fastboot oem writecid 11111111" make sure it is 8 ones (1)
enter the command "fastboot read cid" [it should confirm your CID is 11111111]

well you've done everything that i done when i tried out Insertcoin rom for a few days and never had any of your issues. so not sure whats going on.
- unlocked bootloader
- get s-off
- get supercid
- update firmware
- get latest twrp recoverry
- install Insert Coin
use the fix miniwhooper posted on her firmware thread ....Flash stock recovery and factory reset from boot loader. It will fix you /data partition.. then flash custom recovery and it should be fixed

go back to TWRP main page and install, choose SDcard and the zip file you just uploaded should be there.

This doesn't work... if you just flash the latest SuperSU in TWRP, a 3rd/4th Gen Moto device will fail to boot because SuperSU's install script does not recognize that this device must have a systemless install. You must start TWRP and before flashing go to Advanced - Terminal and enter "echo SYSTEMLESS=true>>/data/.supersu" so the SuperSU install script will parse the file and know it has to do a systemless install.

If you are getting "No command" that is not TWRP, it is the factory recovery...
When you install TWRP with `fastboot flash recovery twrp.img` you must start TWRP, allow it to make changes to the system, then go to TWRP's reboot menu and select Reboot to Recovery. This action will permanently set TWRP as the recovery, otherwise the OS has a script which will restore the stock recovery on boot.
Proper way to flash TWRP, in my opinion, on a new (to TWRP) Moto device once the bootloader is unlocked:
1) fastboot boot twrp.img
2) do NOT tick "Never show this screen again on boot" and select Keep Read Only button
3) do a complete backup in TWRP, preferably to the microSD card. Make a copy of this backup and store it away safely for possible future use and keep a copy on the device if possible
4) reboot into bootloader
5) fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
6) start Recovery (TWRP)
7) tick "Never show this screen again on boot" and swipe to allow modification
8) go to Reboot and select Recovery **IMPORTANT** this step allows TWRP to "lock" itself in and prevent the OS from replacing it with the stock recovery again
9) TWRP should start again, and it should not prompt you at all and just go to the TWRP menu
10) Do what you wish in TWRP (flash SuperSU, install ROM, or whatever) if anything
11) Reboot - System
Replace twrp.img with the appropriate filename from http://twrp.me for the device. If you have already made changes to the system, just start at step #4

I've seen these steps a few times (OK, many times, with all the threads started on this exact question).
I'm just curious.. Why does it work? i.e. How is rebooting into TWRP without installing it, then immediately turning around, installing it, and running it... how is that different from just installing it first thing and running it? Like, what's going on internally that makes those two things different?
Thanks x

OK... Booting TWRP without installing has nothing to do with functionality of TWRP, it is only to get a clean backup or if you want to root without installing TWRP. TBH, this entire piece is optional and could be skipped, but if you can get a clean backup it sure can makes things easier down the road.
When you flash TWRP, it is flashed... it is written into the recovery partition of your device, but if you start the operating system at this point there is a script (or something, going from my memory of the Nexus 4 which has a script that sat in /system that ran on each boot, so this has been an issue for a while in some devices) that re-writes the recovery it isn't "official". But, but flashing TWRP, allowing it to make changes, then rebooting into TWRP again, it gives TWRP a chance to do something that stops the restoring to official process to stop. I am not sure of the specific details, and I am not sure it really matters, but it works.

Trying to root with Android 8.0

So I've been using this guide to finally try and root my Pixel on 8.0: {apparently I can't post links yet, but google "how to root google pixel droidviews" and it's the first link}
I'm able to get adb to recognize the phone, however, when I go to use the command "fastboot boot recovery twrpOreo.img", the console says "cannot boot 'recovery': No such file or directory". So then I did some googling and tried the command "fastboot flash recovery twrpOreo.img" to which the console spits out:
C:\adb>fastboot flash recovery twrpOreo.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'recovery' (26029 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.701s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) Command is not supported.
(bootloader) Please unlock device to enable this command.
FAILED (remote failure)
finished. total time: 0.802s
All the while the screen on the phone says:
Console: DISABLED
Secure Boot: PRODUCTION
Device is LOCKED
So it says the device is locked but I triple checked, and I unlocked the bootloader under developer settings? Can anyone help me out here?

There is no recovery partition on a Pixel. It's now part of the boot partition. Make sure unlock is toggled in Dev settings. Remember, it will wipe your data. Then
fastboot flashing unlock

You skipped a step. You also need to issue the fastboot command to unlock it.
This will WIPE your phone. No way around that.

Damn, really? There's no way to preserve my data? I know I can back up my photos/docs and **** but I'd sacrifice a lot of app data/preferences by wiping.

This is why you should unlock the phone as soon as you buy it.
So maybe a dumb question but I'm new to all this. Is there any way I could completely backup a clone of my phone's data, and then restore it after root, so that everything is just as it was, except now I have root privileges?

No. You can do this once you are rooted and have TWRP but not before. Just back up your important data and go for it.

Isn't app data automatically backed up on Google servers? Or am I recalling it wrongly?

Sorry for spamming you, but it looks like the official instructions only show you how to re-flash the system OS without root privileges? My goal is to re-flash with root.

1. Flash factory image
2. Boot system
3. Reboot bootloader
4. Fastboot Twrp 3.1.1.1
5. Flash Twrp 3.1.1.1 installer zip or not if you don't want permanent Twrp
6. Flash SuperSU or Magisk
7. Reboot system

The stock recovery comes up instead of flashed twrp

Hello,
When I try to reboot to recovery the stock recovery comes up instead of twrp.
I have flashed multiple versions (through adb) of compatible twrp recoveries, but the issue was the same with all of them.
I am on android oreo with the latest update.
I just want to access twrp.
Did anyone experienced the same, or does anyone know hot solve this problem?
How are you booting to TWRP?
Which command are you using to flash TWRP?
Unplug usb + power + vol up, release pwr when phone vibrates/huawei logo is seen.
Or use 'adb reboot recovery'

Hi
I have the same problem... Let me just round up the facts:
I have a Huawei Mate 9 Pro
The phone is unlocked, when i boot in to bootloader (adb reboot bootloader) it says PHONE Unlocked + FRP Unlock
When I flash twrp I get:
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp-3.1.1-0-hi3660.img
Sending 'recovery_ramdisk' (27944 KB) OKAY [ 0.658s]
Writing 'recovery_ramdisk' OKAY [ 0.268s]
Finished. Total time: 0.943s
When I afterwards try to boot into recovery (adb reboot recovery)
Error
Please update your system
Error
Func NO 11 (Recovery image)
Func NO 2 (Load failed)
I currently have build no LON-L29 8.0.0.323(C432LOG)
All I want to do is flash a newer image, can I do it with adb/fastboot directly?
i am using this recovery for my Mate 9 (L29) at https://forum.xda-developers.com/p10-plus/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-1-0-oreo-t3734993. Works fine. I suggest when you flash it via fastboot, please don't use command to reboot phone. Instead, just unplug phone and manually shut it off. Then, hold vol up + power buttons, it should load TWRP. I experienced that the reboot command loads eRecovery than TWRP.

Only reason it would do this is because you're flashing an image meant for Nougat.
Try this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-1-0-t3783353

And when you say image, you mean the twrp image, right? Which one of the four download links should I use? the one for mate 10 pro?
Thanks for your help

What?
The thread I linked is for Mate 9, only one download link is in there.
