Buying galaxy S8+, changing ROM and CSC? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hey, I am planning on buying galaxy s8+ (exynos version).
Since I will buy it aboard I want to be sure that I could change the ROM to an Israeli ROM (aka ILO), and getting OTA updates for it.
Anyway, I heard that in order to be able to receive OTAs, I must change the CSC as well- am I right?
If I am, how do I accomplish it? will it trip knox? is my deivce need to be rooted?
I also got a silly question- by changing ROM I can choose the Hebrew language, right?
Thank ya all! I have searched on XDA but most of the information is about the GS7E, and I am afraid that the procedure is different in each device.

Yes you can change your Rom(cdc code) to ILO since it is part of Multi csc code(OXM) and you won't trigger the Knox.
To get OTA, you have to remain "Official"! Meaning if you choose to modify your device(Root, etc..)
you cannot receive over the air updates, however you can flash it via TWRP.
The most important thing for you is, if you buy your device from Europe, that is Sim-Free, you must
make a minimum of 5 minutes voice call with an European Network SIM card or your device will be
Region Locked to Europe and you wouldn't be able to use it outside of Europe. If you are actually buying
from Europe, check your phone after the 5 minute voice call so that the "Region Lock" has been removed.
Good luck.

You bought the phone used I assume? hence it being already rooted and 0x1?
If you update to MJ7 (latest) yes you will lose root because it comes with a new bootloader, but since you are 0x1 already you can re-root without worrying about your warranty.
You may need to be careful regarding REGION Lock though... Not sure if updating reactivates it or not. So read up loads before you do anything to it!
thanks i see, mmmm but how this region lock work i mean this phone is from europe that mean i can only put oficial rom from there ? or it will work whit all other rom whitout a problem
REGION Lock is where the phone is locked to a certain region aka Europe / USA / Latin America etc, If your phone is the European model in theory it won't work where you are presently, Unless the region lock has been disabled via the method Samsung require (country of purchase - one 5 minute phone call made to release the lock, so an EU simcard used first)

MHA-L29C605B111 to MHA-L29BC605B111

Hello forum, sorry if the question i am going to ask is a bit noob. I have a mate 9 (MHA-L29C605B111 CUSTC605D111). The thing is i am getting annoyed by the notifications in numners not the icon. The thing is via FF i only find the MHA-L29BC605B111 CUSTC605D162. That cust is the same as a friend of mine which has the icons. My questions are:
1) Is there a command to enable the icons?
2) Is there any risk via FF to change from C605 to BC605 as is only OTA-MF?
3) Is this the correct way to change the CUSTID?
Thank you for every help you may give me as i am new in the huawei world!!:good::good:

1. No. Huawei uses numbers in old ROMs. But in new ROMs you can select numbers or icons.
2. You can not change ROM via OTA-MF in this case. This type of ROM contains difference between previous version and current only. If you will flash it over other ROM (non-native) - ROM will not be flashed. I don't know what difference between cust D111 and D165.
Symbol 'B' in MHA-L29BC605 means beta or test.
Maybe, you can flash but ROM version is same B111, so very little chances to flash by OTA type.
If you're not planning to sell phone or not using special functional from your mobile operator, it is better to rebrand on world or china ROM. The most popular are C636 (Asia Pacific), C432 (Europe), C00 (China). But you will lost ability to return on your customization, cause there is no full version of your current ROM.

Many thanks. I am a little afraid of rebranding at the moment. I do not understand de process correctly and I do not want to mess up my phone. I do not understand what is important about my operator, as this phone is not from an operator or the man who sell it to me said that, as i live in argentina this phone is not available here and i do not know from which country is from. Is there a posibility that i get otas or i will be stuck in this?

Where is your phone from? How you bought it?
Unfortunately, phones with extra customization are not updated often. I reviewed many stock ROMs, and ROMs with cust are hosted without FullOTA type even! So it is very hard to restore original state back.
Imho, if anyone wants buy Mate 9 and don't want problems with ROM or flashing process, he/she must buy phone with popular region.
I don't wander what Huawei included in addition to region when named cust. Maybe, it is special settings for domestic mobile operators, maybe some bloatware, maybe something else.
About existing OTAs.
Need to download them all and check what is inside. Changelogs are different, so it is chance that files are incremental. But I will travel for 2 weeks and without ability to get internet. Sorry.
I bought my phone to a guy who import them here in argentina. But i do not have any carrier branding in the ROM and i put my chip and it is not branded. Does my carrier affect in the time of the updates or no? As is not branded. I just reading reddit that the chip you put in the phone affects otas as mine c605 is destinated to colombia and mine is from argentina. Is really true that? In addition that since i bought the phone (1st May 2017) never received an OTA and still on october 2016 security patch.

Well man. Thnxs for all your info. I got the guts to rebrand this thing. Everything went OK in the first try. The only weird thing that make me crap my pants was that after the rebranding process (When i has finished intalling in the EMUI recovery) the phone start rebooting as crazy :crying: :crying: . It posted huawei logo, then black screen and start rebooting not allowing to enter either fastboot or ADB, after some time doing that the phone booted OK :victory: . Then flashed again the same model option and it was all a huge success :highfive:. Was the rebooting normal o not? Because in the guide that was translated to spanish that was a bit more accurate did not mention anything neither here. Any way, my phone is OK now i have the icons that was the thing that bothered me a lot and i am happy with that, THANKS TO EVERYONE :highfive::highfive:

Purchased the G955FD, should I worry about CSC?

Hi all
I just purchased the International S8+ dual Sim variant, the G955FD, from eBay.
I live in Canada and will be using both a Telus Sim and a Rogers Sim.
Is there anything I need to worry about regarding the CSC type?
I found this thread, https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ility-flashable-csc-selection-v1-0-0-t3605264
So it seems easy enough - I just don't know if and when I need to change the type.
And should I even be changing it to Telus or Rogers, since they don't have this variant?
And yes this is my first Samsung phone
And input is appreciated!
Edit: if it matters, I don't use wifi calling for either Telus or Rogers. I also plan on simply rooting the phone with magisk to make some mods, and put on Android pay
Just curious. Where was your Duos sourced from?

Great question.
As I did more reading on the device I checked the eBay listing and didn't see exactly where it's sourced from. I should have it in hand by Wednesday and I'll try to validate then. What should I be looking for?
Is there a specific source country that works better than others?

Firstly, congratulations on the new phone. I've got a 955FD as well.
It doesn't matter where the phone is sourced from, although if you want to check, you can go in to settings > about > software information > service provider information and see the CSCs listed there, in this format 'XXX/XXX/XXX'
The first one is the active CSC on the device at the time of you checking, the second one is the CSC for the SIM card currently being used, and the third CSC which can not be changed at ALL is the one from which country the device was sourced.
I'm in Pakistan so for me the CSC format is: PAK/PAK/MID
First two are PAK because that's the CSC for my SIM card and because it's the active CSC on my device, however the last one always remains as MID since that's where my device was imported from.
Canada has no CSCs available for the G955FD sicne it's the Exynos variant and the one sold in Canda is the G955W which is Single SIM and SD835, however the CSCs should work regardless of device variant. You can flash the CSC for whichever is your main SIM card, or whichever you use more often. Either Telus or Rogers, entirely up to you.
The benefits of flashing your carriers CSC is getting stuff like VoLTE and WiFi calling (and sometimes even 4G+/LTE+) to work. No harm in doing it since you're going to root anyway, so make sure to flash whichever one you prefer.
Magisk, rooting, mods, that's all fine, but do confirm properly about Android Pay before actually going ahead and rooting.
Samsung Pay will not work in Canada with the 955FD, and will definitely not work anywhere at all once you've rooted and tripped the KNOX warranty counter. Android Pay can be tricked into working by passing SafetyNet with Magisk, not sure if this still works or not though.
Other than that you should't have any issues.
If you've got any more questions, just tag me or quote this post and I'll be happy to help.

The break down is very much appreciated.
Is there any issue with flashing (via TWRP or Odin?) random CSCs?
Since there is no G955FD in Canada, I don't want to break anything.
I'm very comfortable with flashing and modding the heck out of Android phones, but Samsung seems to be a totally different ball game lol
I obtained a Galaxy S8+ G955FD Dual Sim from e-Bay as well, sourced from UAE. I was able to register US issued MasterCard and Visa on Samsung Pay.
I am on T-Mobile, other than not having WIFI calling, the G955FD works great. Rooting the phone would most likely break the Samsung Pay. So that is a decision you need to make.

No issues at all. Plenty of people in the US using the Exynos variants and they've all flashed the necessary CSCs when required.
Flash TWRP using Odin and then use the flashable CSC selection mod to choose whatever CSC you'd like to flash.

Thanks guys.
I'll assume that flashing TWRP is going to trip knox, right? therefore flashing a localized CSC is going to require me tripping knox.
Which hey, if Android Pay works fine then i don't need to use Samsung Pay i guess.
If i dont change my CSC, then will my phone receive OTAs when they're released in whatever country its sourced from?
Will changing my CSC to a Canadian one mean i'll start seeing Canadian OTAs?
What about manually flashing official images? Do i have to make sure that the file i'm using matches the CSC as well?
And lastly, are the S8 and S8+ images the same file? Or are ROMs for the S8 100% compatible with the S8+?

Flashing anything other than a Samsung Stock ROM will trip KNOX. Including TWRP. The Canadian CSC using the flashable CSC selector will have no effect on KNOX since it'll already have been tripped because of TWRP.
If you don't change your CSC, and are rooted with Magisk and have mods, you won't get any OTAs since the phone is rooted.
And no, changing to a Canadian CSC will not get you Canadian OTAs since the Canadian variant has the Snapdragon 835 and the 955FD you're getting has an Exynos 8895, so OTAs and stock ROMs are most definitely not interchangeable.
Manually flashing stock ROMs is possible, I suggest you flash the newest one available when you get the phone, which is G955FXXU1AQK7. And honestly, because there's been a major overhaul in how CSCs work on the S8, you can just grab any firmware and flash it and it'll stay on the CSC your phone came from because it can't switch to a Canadian one without you manually doing it.
S8/S8+ images are not the same and you can't flash S8 images on an S8+ or S8+ images on an S8.
Only S8+ (G955F/G955FD) stock ROMs will work on your phone.
However, since you're going through all the effort to root, change CSC and flash Magisk Mods, might as well use a custom ROM?
They get updated regularly so you don't have to keep flashing the stock ROM, and you can still have root, CSC mods and everything but with a few extra features and possibly better performance.

So maybe the first think i do is try and see how long i can go without having to root it / put on TWRP.
If i dont touch anything, including the CSC, will i receive OTAs as the source country gets them ? or am i out of band and therefore am on my own?

It's CSC is XSG/XSG/XSG which looks like "United Arab Emirates unbranded"
First thing im noticing is that it's not restoring my Google backups
Is this because it's a samsung phone and i need to use the Samsung backup feature instead?

It is indeed a UAE phone, good place to be sourced from since XSG gets updates fairly quickly compared to other CSCs.
What issue did you face when restoring the Google backup and how exactly did you try to restore it?
Some people have reported that the Samsung Pay app installed on XSG phones works well in other countries, so you can try that out if you want, otherwise Android Pay should work fine.

Yes, i actually just got a notification for an OTA. I think the December security patches.
Which is aweosme, so i'm not going to flash a different CSC because i dont think i need to at this time!
Regarding the backups; I was expecting to log in to this phone and get all my apps that were installed on my last phone.
But then i realized that htis is a brand new phone and i dont have a backup to restore to!
So i just manually installed the apps i needed and was on my way.
Lastly, yes, i just installed Android Pay and it works perfectly fine.
Thanks for all the help!

If your previous phone is an android phone and you use Google ID on that phone, you should have no problem restoring your apps. The Play Store remembers your Google ID and all of your apps should be restored if you log in with you Google ID.
Im noticing now that of my 2 SIM cards, one is usually around 80% strength, while the other is around 50% strength.
is this possibly an issue with using the wrong CSC for my region?
Or maybe since only one SIM can use LTE at a time, the other SIM is stuck on 2g/3g and it just has crappy reception becuase those towers arnt really in use anymore in my area?

I had taken my 955FD to UAE earlier this year, used my local UAE SIM in slot 1 for LTE, and my Pakistani SIM card in slot 2 so I could still get texts on that number. Battery life did take a significant hit since the signal strength on one of the SIMs was quite low.
Changing CSCs may or may not have an effect on the signal strength. A good way to check is by using the SIM with poor signal strength in another phone with the same network mode, and see if you get the same results, if so, changing CSC will do nothing. If the difference is very large, then you could consider flashing the CSC although I wouldn't recommend rooting your phone just for a CSC change, especially if you aren't facing difficulties in making calls/sending texts/using data.
I have a 955FD XSG also. Using AT&T. I managed to enable VoLTE by quickly putting the sim on an att branded phone and returning the sim to my phone. I now have the VoLTE toggle and calls are placed over LTE but I can't seem to get the wifi calling toggle to appear.

WiFi calling won't appear without the AT&T CSC.

Question Problem with flash rom from another country.

Hi how are you i'm having a problem flashing the rom, i use to have a galaxy s10e and remove the aro version of the rom, i'm from Argentina, and installed the dbt version that is from Germany because of the faster updates that in my country always come much latter. Now i'm doing exactly the same procedure with my s21+ and the flash process goes well but when i check the region of my rom stills says aro, what am i doing wrong, could the phone be region locked? I bought it from a carrier but they say the phone is unlocked, which is true because i put a sim card from other provider and work perfectly fine, my s10e i bought it directly from Samsung. Is there anything i'm missing? I understand that you can change rom a put a rom from another country but i don't know what else can i do. Hope i express myself correctly, thanks for any help you can give me and sorry if i post this in the wrong place i'm new in the forum.

Hi Mate
I had the same issue , on the S10 it was possible to do it as you mention , not any more , the region is locked , I finally changed but not thru flashing , i got lucky and i could use a phone dialer code to change it , there are 3 options you could try ( without root)
Check here , this option worked for me , careful it will factory reset your phone and in my case i could only use it 3 times...
Option 2 , another dialer code ( did not work for me) check here
And last option use a pay service SAMKEY

Great news mate
But which method?
I had to use Samkey on mine to change from carrier locked CSC to open unlocked CSC (TNL to PHN) and after that worked and I had 2 credits left I changed it again to my current carrier CSC, VDF. Worked fine.

Question Carrier debrand

Hi guys, sorry for this trivial question. I have not been doing flashing for years, as I got unbranded phones in the past 5-6 years.
Now it happens that I have got a Flip 3 vodafone branded, it is a F711B.
I do really hate that brand, so I would be pleased to get rid of that bloatware on my phone.
My mind suggests me flashing an unbranded stock firmware. So I have downloaded the one with CSC EUX. Apparently, I have an OXM carrier-branded variant.
Can I safely flash with Odin? Or do you recommend a different way?
Also, which options I should keep in Odin.
These are trivial questions, however, I do not want to mess my new phone.
Cheers
I tried doing that with a Puerto Rico (Claro) version of a S phone (don't remember which one it was) it didn't work, it simply didn't do anything.
now the change csc itself is not enough, you need to change the device manager, I paid $ 80 mdm carrier remove.
