(SOLVED) beware: contacts update removes contacts - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Updating to the latest contact app version causes a loss of all your contacts that are not synced to Google.
Not everyone wants all their data on Google servers. I don't. On my phone, my contacts are currently assigned to "device". When I updated the app from the play store, all my contacts not on Google servers disappeared. Fortunately Titanium Backup restored them - but only if I also restored the older contacts app too.
Looks like Google won't let you keep your contacts unless you share them with Google. Via the new app version. So, you have been warned........
Not nice.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Export your contacts from the old contacts version and import them after the update.
It's a bug.

Contacts and Google Contacts

So I found that the Touchwiz contacts app does not use ANY groups from google contacts but the "starred" favorites are not even stored in the Starred in Android group either.
Does anyone know if there is a way to set this up that I am missing? Or did samsung completely fail at google contacts integration?
There's been a couple of threads about this, but I've yet to see one with a sure-fired answer. I'd like to know also though, because I went ahead and put all my contacts that I wanted to keep on my gmail before buying the phone, and now the phone shows all of them (gmail, and sim)

Yes, Samsung screwed the pooch on this one. It installed a brain-dead Contacts app of its own instead of the stock Android Contacts app, which suppresses display of the Gmail contacts. You can't uninstall the Samsung app or reinstall the stock Android app.
The groups data apparently is being downloaded in the background during a sync with Google, but not displayed.
There is a workaround. You can try using a free third-party app from Market called Contacts Evolved. It displays your Gmail groups, including starred favorites. A bit buggy, though, with force-close issues.
I don't have a problem with the contact manager as my contacts aren't terribly organized anyways. But I do wonder what on earth the "phone" sub-group is. Does that mean it stays on my phone exclusively? Why would anyone on earth want that? defeats the whole purpose of android
Can the contacts button in the phone app trigger different contacts apps? Its shame really, I relaly like the swipe to call/text feature.

[Q] How will I save Contact Info between Flashes?

I saved a lot of pictures to my contacts. How will I save those contact pictures if and when I reflash my phone?
Also, why on my phone, when I hit "compose new message", does it list everyone's name and number twice? What is it doing?
sync to google - contact pics are syned there as well.

Yup this makes it super easy. Now every time I flash a new rom, upon first boot when logging into my google account it syncs all contact numbers along with pictures.
This combined with Titanium Backup for all my apps and app data makes restoring everything to how you had it quick and easy.
You can also use AT&T's address book service to sync contacts, especially if you have your reasons for not wanting to sync with your Google contacts.
Then there's also the stock option to export/import as a VCF, but I don't know if that retains photos and all other fields.

If I sync it to my google account, shouldn't it be in my gmail contacts? I can't find them there, so I am unsure if it is synced there.
Is Titanium Backup in the market?

Yeah they should be under contacts. If you don't see them then they didn't sync. You may be doing something wrong.
Yes Titanium Backup is in the market.
How do you get your "phone" contacts to sync with google? AT&T address book no longer works since the JH7 update

Simply typing "titanium backup" into a search in the Android Market yourself would've answered that question for you immediately and would've been quicker than asking here.

It'll only sync contacts that began in Gmail to begin with. To get your phone-only contacts in, export them as a vcf then import that VCF into Gmail.

That's not true. When you set it up properly it syncs both ways. It will then upload all names, numbers, stored contact pictures, email addresses etc to your google account, and this way all you have to do is sync with it whenever you flash and it will all be there.

Incorrect. All of my contacts are synced with Gmail and none of them started that way.

The next logical question is "How do you properly set it up"?
For me, I couldn't get Google to sync properly until I flashed to a 2.2 ROM (currently using Perception build 5). When you are setting up, it allows you to choose what you sync, just make sure you have "Contacts" checked off.

[Q] Is phone-only, unsynced contacts profile under ICS possible?

Untill Google get off their asses and fix the low-res issue Gmail Contacs has, I tried to work around this, as I did on froyo and gingerbread and save all my contacts under a phone-only, unsynced profile so I can add hi-res images of my own and not have Google mess them up on the next sync.
However I have yet to manage to do this under ICS. Is it no longer possible?
AOSP+ 2.2.5 ROM
Nexus S i9023
fb doesn't sync in my ics, any ideas ?
While I appreciate the bump it's unrelated to my issue.
/// COMPUTOR 5000 / endmessage
Give this a try
There is an app that allows you to import appointments from iCal files now while that is not you issue to do this the app creates a dummy account on the phone that is unsynced and at least in previous android (i.e. froyo and gingerbread) you were able to add contacts under that account.
So hopefully this works for you.
Also just to mention this app is not mine nor have I had any input into it.

Does anyone know of a way to save an unsynced contacts in ICS or Jellybean????

[Q] Google contacts sync issue on ICS leak

KNOWN ISSUE FOR UCLC4 leak ONLY (CONFIRMED):
1- Add a new contact in phone and add it as "Google contact" to your gmail.com account entered in phone.
2- Force a sync now in settings > Accounts & Sync.
3- Login to your gmail. View contacts. Is the new contact in your Gmail contacts list?
METHOD 2 (DOES NOT FIX Sync issue but was my attempt to...):
1- Export contacts displayed in phone to vcf file on SD Card.
2- Wipe all contacts on phone, push sync. THIS WILL PUSH a delete sync to google contacts on server. Continue to confirm mass delete until it is completely sync'd and contacts are gone from servers.
3- Import VCF contacts to PHONE but NOT as GOOGLE contacts.
4- Perform Merge to google. Force a sync.
Does contacts appear in Gmail Contacts or Google contacts on server?
THIS IS A CONFIRMED ISSUE with ICS 4.0 UCLC4 leak!! FIXED IN UCLD2 leak!!
wow.... no one is getting new numbers to add to their phone huh?? interestingly small.....closed world.... lol
I can confirm the sync issue

Thank you for responding. Anyone else? Just create a random number in your phone, force the sync on contacts.
Login to gmail . View contacts. Does that contact come up?

Must not be a lady's man; or you're too young, or you're married and too old.
if you're old, but not too old; you must not do well with your coworkers outside of your job?
lol jk jk
confirmed issue on my end. ended up losing a friends contact info cause of it.
There is an option in the settings to merge contacts with google. Only i am not sure if that will merge everything with my google address book or not. Don't want to do that.
Confirmed the issue
I have saved contacts to a VCF file on external SD; imported as PHONE CONTACTS ONLY. Then cleared all my google contacts in gmail.
Then go back to my phone and perform a "MERGE WITH GOOGLE". Then force a sync. It does not push those contacts back to google servers. !!!
Any word on a fix or work around for this yet?

The only fix is to add contacts to phone, export phone-only contacts to VCard. Import to google contacts in web browser. Force sync. Google server will push it out back to phone and keep it in gmail servers.
This is truly kind of annoying.. Lost a girl's number cause of this. Lucky she stalked me otherwise I could have been SOL.
Is anyone working on a solution not workaround to this?

I wish I would have read this before. I lost like 80 contacts!!!
Oh mama...
And i was about to install one of the new ROMS.
I am shocked nobody notice this till now. I add one of two contacts a day.
Hit the THANKS if this helped ya, then maybe a MOD will see this and make it a sticky? cuz this is probably the #1 biggest bug in ICS for our phones LOL
I deleted a number for one of my contacts and added a new number for them through google voice on the web....and my phone updated with the change with in 5min running the ICS leak

If you take a look at my ICS 4.0 bugs & quirks thread; you will see that ANY change on google WEB... WILL push back to phone. But new contact / number in PHONE will NOT push back to google web / servers.
This is what i found so far. Okay well hope this helps someone to find a fix...
1. create new contact in phone, wont sync with google account.
2. create new contact on line (google account), syncs with phone
3. Edit existing contacts in phone, all edits to contact made in the phone will sync with google account.
So if you have an existing contact and and you edit any fields from the phone, the changes will sync up with your google account. Only new contacts created in the phone will not sync.
Does saving to the contact to phone then doing a merge work? This is a shame.
there is a contacks.apk that works. unfortunately I can't do any manual dialing after. in the themes and apps section there is a thread on inverted apps. I am going to look to see if I can get the corresponding phone.apk to see if that works. but I did save a contact and the addition was pushed to google.

Contacts app confusion

Hi All,
Just migrated from iPhone to OnePlus 7 Pro, and am enjoying my return to Android very much.
However, I'm really puzzled by how the inbuilt contacts app is working.
I've always kept my contacts synced with my Google account, so when I moved across I simply added my Google account and there were all my contacts.
So far, so simple. My expectation was that the Contacts app on the phone would simply display my Google contacts and that any edits would be reflected in the Google account.
I've recently tried to edit a contact, and I find that it's not so simple. For the particular contact, I appear to have 3 linked contacts. One from Google, one from WhatsApp and one from the phone itself.
To make matters worse, there appear to be more phone contacts than there are contacts in the Google account. How the hell did that happen? I've not added any new contacts, or told the phone to maintain any contacts locally.
I've now told the Contacts app to only show contacts that are in the Google account, and to use the Google account as the default for new contacts.
My questions are this:
1) Why does the phone appear to be maintaining a separate sets of contacts?
2) How do I know which field to edit in a contact. Attached screenshot shows show there are three identical sets of phone numbers. Which one is for the Google account?
3) Can I stop the phone from maintaining it's own local contacts database?
4) Can I make the phone only show the Google contacts when editing?
5) Can I get a view that shows which contacts are on the phone, but not in Google? I want to work out where the extra ones have come from.
Perhaps, I'm missing the point of how Android does this. If anyone could explain, that would be great.
Thanks,
Andy.
