WhatsApp claims that my photos are not photos & so won't allow me to send them! A message comes up saying this when I pick a photo from my gallery (or a freshly taken photo) as soon as the screen reverts to the messaging app conversation it is being sent to.
Also, if I open the camera from within WhatsApp & take a picture, it just doesn't register & the app returns to the open conversation.
It also won't let me send screenshots.
I'm sure I used to be able to send pictures (I don't send many!) but certainly can't now.
Can anyone shed any light on this please?!
(I'm on B182)
Cheers.
Check the app permissions. Maybe it doesn't have direct camera or photo/file access.

Yeah, it does - that's why I'm stuck now, there must be a fair explanation which I can sort out but I can't find it!

I have the same problem with my WhatsApp . all the permissions are enabled in settings but the problem still exists. Did you find the solution to the problem? Thanks
Still working on it but I think it's to do with the amount of media I've received in the past, has filled the 'memory'.
I didn't realise that received files seem to save within the app which only has so much space - something like that anyway!
When I deleted a load of old stuff from within messages, I was again able to send & receive.
Try it.....!
never had that issue before, have you tried reinstall the app from scratch? and clear the cache on the phone?
Done a force stop etc. but I've not done a reinstall because there's too much info I may need access to in my current situation - can do without any more hassles!
Keep hoping an app update will help but not so far it seems.
you can do a backup of everything and then try that

I seem to have hit the Whatsapp images or media limit, there were 1950 images when the issue of "the file you sent was not a photo" and something along the lines of "can't receive the image" occured. Deleted a few images from whatsapp image folder, and for good measure, ran the phone's storage cleaner app to delete redundant files. It seems to work. If the error occurs again, might have to remove more media from storage.

I have searched around and found nothing on XDA or anywhere else about this. With that being said, I understand the existence of Gallery and Photos. Not complaining about that.
Is there any way to keep Hangout MMS pictures from populating their own albums in the Gallery app? Here's the issue, every picture I send, creates an album with prefix Hangouts then the name of the contact. Deleting the pictures from the Gallery app deletes it from my conversation in Hangouts too leaving a white picture and the three dots at the bottom which means that the pictures can't be found. This is not only for chats, but MMS as well. Yes I could go get another Gallery App etc... But wanted to try and see if anyone has it figured out first before going down that route.
There is no option to only view albums on the device itself. Disabling the sync, disables auto-backup.
Thoughts or solutions anyone?
+1 on this, I was randomly searching around google support for this the other day but never hit paydirt. Its annoying as hell.
Edit. You inspired me to go look again. Go into the gallery app select settings and turn off sync with google account. Go into main settings/apps/gallery and delete data and cache. Reboot. Worked for me.

Thank you! While you solution does work and I have tried it, it isn't quite exactly what I am looking for. Reason being because I do sync my pictures to my google account considering I just blew through over 70GB in DropBox storage and can no longer automatically upload pictures I take. Basically, I am looking for a way to selectively pick what to display in my Gallery app(I don't want anything Picasa/Google+/Hangouts/Photos in there). Since the intro of the Photos app which is mostly tied in with G+, it shows everything online, and if they are going to keep the gallery app, then they should at least allow it to be used for offline images available on the device(Just like Play Music has, where it gives you the option to to use music on your online account or what you have on your device).
Unfortunately, the dependency of the camera app on the gallery app, makes it impossible to revert back to a previous version of the gallery.
Ah, sorry about that. Not sure how you can pull that one off, I sure didn't see mention of such when I was searching.
Try making a .nomedia file in the picassa folder where it downloads the pics. And same to every other folder you don't wanna see in your gallery. This will help you select what displays along with auto sync enabled.

It creates one for every contact I send a picture to in Hangouts.
That's going to be a lot of files to be created. I guess there is no other way. Unless I just install another gallery.

No it's not like that. You would have to copy paste only one .nomedia in the main folder of the data file of hangouts and one in picassa.
Social Contact Photo Sync
Just try this app. It allows to link local contacts with social contacts and to keep the local contacts automatically in sync with a linked social contact.
It supports:
GooglePlus
Twitter
Instagram
Facebook (only with ROOT and the original facebook app)
WhatsApp (you have to force whatsapp to download new pictures by opening a contacts picture in whatsapp, the rest is handled by the app)
Viber (still in there, actually, this is currently not really usable, you can just link a contact with a viber picture, but you can't sync with new picutures)
The app tells you in more detail, what you have to care about, if you want to automatically sync your contact pictures...
Any feedback or suggestion is appreciated.
The app is completely free, the in app purchase just removes the adds. Functionality is free
Get the app from the playstore: Social Contact Photo Sync
Guide/Tutorial: http://www.michaelflisar.com/social-contact-photo-sync-general/
how can i force the app to automatch the contct sync???
Start the batch auto sync setup dialog and click the headers of the groups (like 90 to 100% and so on, all the way down to 0 to 10% if you really want that), this will select the complete group at once. This way you can select all your contacts and use the best match as auto sync contact...
I still advice you to once look through the list and disable or correct all the wrong matches... Afterwards my advice would be to scroll through your contacts and only look at the ones withaut an auto sync contact and if you know you have this friend in one network, manually set up those contacts one by one... This is my prefered way to do it...
PS: a complete guide is online here: http://www.michaelflisar.com/social-contact-photo-sync-general/
Is there any place where I can download older versions? Becuase I wanna test if I am doing something wrong (even if I believe I do the same as earlier) or the last 2 versions are buggy in importing facebook friends via csv copy - getting error code 14.
this error code comes from using the root method normally - just change the root method of facebook to method 3, this one should work (click on the facebook card on the home screen and click setup facebook)
If you really just want to import the csv and don't have a facebook app installed and are not rooted, then just send a feedback via the app after something went wrong...

I am on Android N Preview 3 which is not working with the root method. And meawhile, I realized that the fault is mine, not the app's. I opened the csv file with a different text editor (Solid Explorer's), not with that one which I used earlier (MiXplorer's text editor) and somehow it showed in a different format I guess which I copied and the app didn't like that. I reinstalled MiXplorer, opened the csv file with it, copy paste and now it's importing fine again.

any way to avoid the dinosaur-official fb app?
Either use the non root method or just deinstall the Facebook app again after my app has imported the contacts
Opened WhatsApp image bt nothing happened.
The app says we need to manually open WhatsApp image then share it to this app then select which contact to be changed.
Sent from my XT1562 using XDA-Developers mobile app
@prom85 Could you please let me know where all the pictures are stored (exact location)?

Whereever your Android contacts app does save it. Normally it's a database.
You can force my app to auto sync all contacts without checking if an image was changed though, go to general settings, click on advanced settings and click on the last entry in the dialog that pops up... afterwards an auto sync will overwrite an contacts image with an active auto sync without checking if the images has changed or not
I just purchased the pro version! I have had android for seven or eight years but never really had correct contact photos so thank you for this wonderful app. It makes it so easy. I noticed this app's logo shows the linkedin logo but syncing with the linkedin network isn't obvious to me. How can I do this?
LinkedIn is not working anymore. I had a root method that worked once, but then they changed their app and now this method is not working anymore.
Official LinkedIn integration is not possible either (via login to LinkedIn), I already tried it but they won't accept my app. As a primary business network they do not accept apps that access data in background without direct user interaction, this is against their usage rules.
I'm still getting the {"code": 403, "error_type": "OAuthForbiddenException", "error_message": "You are not a sandbox user of this client"} when trying to add Instagram. Just wanted to know if everyone else is still seeing this?

Everyone should have this error... LinkedIn changed their usage rules at 01.06.2016, so I had to submit my app again and currently am waiting for approval... I'm not sure if they will though...
I have the same error code.
MHA-L29 stock everything. Used phone clone from Mate 8 to Mate 9.
I am unable to share photos to WhatsApp. Just does not appear on available share apps. I can however share videos and strangely, I can share two photos.
From gallery, if I select two photos, WhatsApp appears immediately on the share to list. Uncheck one photo and it disappears.
I can however select photos from within WhatsApp so it's not a permission problem. I cannot share from File Manager either.
Thought I might have selected to shoot photos in RAW, but that's not it either, selecting old photos taken with Mate 8 and screenshots doesn't work. Re-installed WhatsApp, re-started, tried again, still no go.
On my mate9 sharing to whatsapp was hidden behind the "more" icon, after using it a couple of times it was visible in the first icons.
Unfortunately it's not that. Selecting two or more photos and WhatsApp appears on the list. Its there for videos and links from Chrome also.
I have the exact same issue with Textra. I was about to post a thread about not being able to share directly to Textra, then found this thread. I hadn't realized that trying to send two photos at once would "fix" the issue, but sure enough, if I select two pictures, Textra becomes an app I can send the photos to.
FWIW, this seems to have been fixed in the USA B167 update that rolled out today.
So strange defect.
Same experience
Hi, I am experiencing the same problem "unable to share a photo to Whatsapp as it is not in the selection list". But fortunately, from the original poster's experience sharing, yes, Whatsapp selection becomes visible if I select 2 photos instead of 1. Unselecting the selected photos back to 1 photo, the Whatsapp selection disappears again. Definitely a weird bug, and thanks to this forum, otherwise, I will never notice that Whatsapp selection will appear if I select 2 photos. By the way, I am already using latest firmware MHA-L29C636B183. Anyway, has anyone found a fix to this yet? Thanks in advance.

A few times a week, my phone will cache the Facebook Messenger photos, and whenever it does they appear in my photo storage apps. I seem to be the only one having this problem as I can't find a permanent fix. Here is what I have attempted so far:
1) Manually deleted all folders containing an image of a Facebook Messenger sticker.
2) Uninstalled all Facebook Messenger stickers. It lets me uninstall all stickers except for the "Pusheen" and "Meep" stickers.
3) Added ".nomedia" folders to the "storage\android\data\com.facebook.orca\files\stickers" and "storage\android\data\com.facebook.pages.app\files\stickers" file locations.
4) Cleared my Facebook Messenger cache and data.
Adding the ".nomedia" folders seems to temporarily work, but somehow they always end up being deleted and the images will make another appearance in my photo storage apps. It seems to happen randomly, as well, as sometimes the "Pusheen" and "Meep" stickers from the Messenger app will appear and other times a bunch of random stickers from the Pages app will appear. The annoyance is compounded by the fact that each sticker is stored in its own individual folder, so when they do reappear there is always at least 30+ new device folders in my photo storage app. So, is there any way to just completely stop the Facebook Messenger and Pages apps from caching these stickers I've literally never used?! Do I have to uninstall the stickers in my Facebook settings somewhere? I don't care what it is, I just want a solution. I have never had this problem until I purchased the OnePlus 6 almost 2 months ago..
Did you switch from iOS?
I get that too, but in the regular gallery app as well. Any cached images from any app shows up, included cached ad videos.

Well, if you run knockoff apps like that, you deserve whatever you get. Plus maybe you should get some help. I'm suspicious that you're tweaked out of your mind right now.
Still Happening
I forgot about this thread because it hadn't happened for a while, but today when I went into my Gallery app after taking a photo I noticed it happened again.
I have posted photos of what it looks like, and as you can see it is very annoying. The ".nomedia" folder trick didn't work this time, either. I understand Facebook sucks, but I have been using Android phones since the Note 3 and I've never had this problem before. So, it has to be something with OnePlus's settings... There really should be a way to turn this off. One thing I've noticed this time is that the date in the albums is much earlier than when the pictures actually appear in my Gallery app. I have no idea why that would be the case.
If no one can provide me an answer here, then maybe I'll take it to OnePlus's customer service and they can give me an answer that I can forward to everyone... I doubt it, though, as their customer service is usually pretty awful and I seem to know more about their phones than they do.
You're supposed to create a .nomedia file, not folder.
Ah hah!

Ahh, that makes sense. That's what I did this time, hopefully it'll be a permanent fix.
Hello, I hope I can explain this properly. I am having problems sharing files in apps that use the default Android file sharing app, which appears to be an app called "Files". If I try to share a hilarious meme that I've saved to my device in Google Chats, after pressing the share picture button a new window opens. If I press on a picture, this new file selection window immediately closes and the picture is not transferred to Google Chats. If try again and press and hold pictures, and then press SELECT in the top right, again no pictures are transferred to Google Chats.
At first I thought this might be a Google Chats issue, but I have run into the issue with any app that doesn't have it's own file sharing component built in. For example, I can share files with Signal and Messages just fine.
I have tried Googling this, searching Reddit. I cannot find anyone else even discussing this problem. All my search results turn up instructions on how to share things.
Below is video of issue in action. Video is kind of fast, please refer to my above description to help see what's happening (or not happening) in the video.

I should have mentioned that I tried wiping cache. I even deleted app updates, still same problem. Then downloaded a couple versions of the app from apkmirror, and still same problem.
did you make any tweaks like disabling apps via adb etc?
I've tried with outlook and it works fine using Files to add attachments
Change it from being default app maybe and try some other app instead
I have not disabled apps with adb.
