(with stock android backup, i mean the default andorid recovery tool, which is preinstalled)
Hey there.
Im totally lost on this one... and also not so skilled with Android....
The Device is a ASUS Zenfone MAX 3 - X008 (ZC520TL) with the latest Official Firmware.
No mods, no nothing.
So my bottom microphone broke a few days ago and ASUS Support told me to try a Factory Reset.
But since i dont wanna brick my Phone or loose my Guarantee (because the Microphone is broken),
i was very limited with the Backup method. So i backed up all my User Data with Android Stock Recovery.
This created "UserData_w454387564835693.backup" Files without a Problem.
Then i did the Factory Reset and tried what ASUS suggested me.
But it didnt work and so i wanted to recover my just backed up files.
Booted to Recovery and recovered the Files without Problem.
Then started the Phone and after the BootLogo and a little time it displays me an error:
"Decryption unsuccesfull! Yout Password is correct, but your Data is corrupted, please Reset your Phone"
..... and now i dont know what to do.... but my userdata backup is very important.
i dont even know what format it is with ending at *.backup....
PLEASE HELP!
*edit*
i did the recovery via my sd card and when i reset the phone again it works (with factory reseted stock firmware)
but as soon as i succesfully recover my backup files, it gives me that error...
Ok, so ASUS Support just replied me that they do not support Backup and Recovery via the Stock Android Recovery. Its just for resetting the Phone.
And the Reason why its not supported is that Android Auto-Activates the Encryption which breaks the Backup, they saied.
Well ok... Luckily i did backup the most important Data via Google Sync,
but many things like my Photos are only in this Backup File.
Is there any way i can access this *.backup Files and extract Data to my PC?
Please help!

I was attempting to apply a backup to my xoom 3.2(rooted) and, after i saved the back up to my SD card. I did a factory reset (suggested by Google because of a market error i was having). After i booted it back up and went through the google services i downloaded rom maneger and tried to restore. Booted up, got stuck on dual core, and the dual core symbol jumps around the screen.
Clockworkmod is fully accessable so hopefully there is hope, whenever i attempt to restore it says /system error.
I've factory reseted and that didn't help(<---- Thats why i'm worried)
Do i just need to download a stock image and apply that?
Please get back to me, I'm in first period now and i have a reaseach paper due in 4 hours i really need my tablet.
You should be able to download stock images from motodev as per this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108505 and flash your Xoom back to normal using fastboot.
Its the best way to solve your problems, the only downside being that you'll lose whatever you had on the tablet (unless you synced your stuff with Google).
Good luck there !
Thank you !
Do you get a system error when trying to do a factory reset? Like does it say it can't wipe data?

Hey,
Rooted my Galaxy Tab plus, then backed it up with TB, then tried to transfer the backup to the external sd... which didn't work. I then very precisely (I thought) followed the instructions for creating permissions to write to the external sd, and as per those instructions, rebooted.
And so my Tab has. Rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted.
I've got it in recovery mode at the moment... but does anyone know how to get this thing out of circular reboot mode? I'm leery of doing a factory reset from recovery until I know if that will have the desired effect--mainly, getting me back into my Tab. I have the stock firmware and ODIN, if that's what's needed. I just need some advice on which is the best to try.
Or, if there's an altogether different solution, then please share...
This may not be useful to solve your problem. However, FYI,...
I was able to applied the permission mod previously, and afterwards, I did a factory reset. It did not remove the permission mod that I applied. That is, after the reset, it was still able to write the the external SD even though all my data and apps were gone.
So chances are the factory reset is not going to solve your problem.
factory reset doesn't mess with the system partition - it basically just wipes the /data partition. So it won't fix your problem.
If you have ODIN, just find a replacement image and re-image the device.

I initially downloaded the stock firmare for the US version, after discovering for myself that doing a factory reset from it's semi-bricked state did no good. The original firmare download was somehow incomplete; it reached an "unexpected end" while extracting and so would not work in ODIN. Then my Tab wouldn't connect to the computer I was using at all.
Fortunately, I was able to re-download the firmware and use ODIN on another computer, so I was able to get back to stock. Even after that, however, I had to do a factory reset; for some reason, my Tab downloaded the first update from Samsung, but would not make the leap to LA3. Once I did the factory reset, though, all was well.
Then, of course, I immediately re-rooted and manually made the changes that let me write to the external sd--correctly, this time. No trouble at all on reboot.
Thank God.
I was messing with the "links" file located at system/bin/. I know what you thinking, but I installed a modded one and ended up bootlooping the phone after reboot. Maybe I did not set up permissions correctly. Anyways, I got scared and I thought that by factory resetting it, the problem would be solved. Still gives me bootloop. Any ideas? My possibilities, from my perspective, are:
-Install the TWRP backup I have (Problem is, I can't even access it)
-Install Lollipop again from the computer (but I'm not rooted anymore because I factory reset it, or am I??)
Could someone guide me through ASAP? I need the phone, my bill is tomorrow and I always pay it through the app.
As far as I can tell your only option is a reflash from your PC if you can't enter the recovery anymore.
But you could try to only flash the system partition (there are options in flash tool) so you won't loose all your stuff. You will loose root and any mods you installed though.
Hello there
I have about 25 google nexus 5 phones to be distributed to some people. I installed all the necessary apps and removed some system apps from one of the phones. Now i want the rest 24 phones to have the same composition as the first one. I tried creating a cyanogenmod backup coping it to the other phone and restoring it - then the phone keeps on showing the loading screen for long time so i got back to recovery mode and made a factory reset and tried to start the phone. unfortunately it is not opening - just shows the loading screen. it has been more than 15 minutes now.
Please help me on how i could get access to the phone and how I can clone my "customized phone" to all the others.
Any help and suggestion is welcome. Thank you
Cyanogenmod backup? So you are rooted, yes?
Install TWPR Recovery on the first phone, and use that to make a backup.
Then install TWRP on your other phones, and make a backup on them to create a backup folder. You'll need to unlock the bootloaders on all of them first.
Transfer the backup from the first phone into the backup folders on the others, and restore the backup in recovery (TRWP).
Hi everyone,
I hope I am in the right forum to post my query. I am trying to find a solution to the existing Problem. Before I get to describe the problem specifically I must make it clear that this is my first time on any android forum. While trying to find a solution for the existing problem, I had to google words like Bootloop, Softbrick, TWRP, Custom Recovery, Root, Flash, ROM etc. They still do not make much sense to me (I will be reading more about them in the coming days). So now you can imagine how big of a Noob I am.
Well, I own a Moto G 1st Gen XT1033. Since yesterday it is in a Bootloop. The phone boots completely at times but automatically restarts itself after a while. Sometimes I have 1-2 minutes at maximum to use the phone. Until now I have been able to delete quite a bit of data for example pictures and certain apps because I thought that Bootloop was happening because of no space on the memory. The last app that I installed 3 days back from Google Play after which this problem started occurring, I was also able to uninstall it. Until now I have tried wiping out Cache by going in the recovery mode but that didnt fix the Reboot problem. I also tried holding the Volume Up + Volume Down + Power button for 2 minutes (I read it on internet somewhere as a fix to the problem) but that didnt help either. I have never created a backup and I don't want to do a Factory Reset as a fix to the problem because I don't want to lose the data. I also tried to follow your solution for backing up data but I got lost. I don't know where to start from. Thats why I am writing here.
I don't know if my phone is rooted. I did turn on Developer Mode on my phone in the past (if this info helps).
I do not know which Android version I have but I am guessing that it is Lollipop.
I never installed TWRP or any Custom Recovery software on my phone before.
The battery is working ok.
What I am looking for is:
1) Step by step guide to create a backup
2) Resolving Bootloop issue if possible
Thanks
without custom recovery no data backup is possible.
u need to unlock your bootloader and install The Twrp recovery to perform the backup.
but only fix for you is factory reset.

Thank you @jbanti Apologize for my late response. As far as I know unlocking the bootloader will erase the memory. One can recover data by ADB Pull by using these Threads:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/help/moto-g-1st-gen-xt1033-boot-loop-stock-t3357472 (Post #4)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426426
So I know that there it is possible using`adb pull` command to take backup of whole device but I don't know how. I get lost in the 2nd thread. Any lead would be appreciated
Thanks
