Yeah, that's the recycle bin, it's things you deleted at some point, ES File Explorer has that feature to retain deleted data similar to PC so you can retrieve it if you accidently delete something. You probably had an app with a similar feature.

Since the JB update almost every time I try to download an app or update I keep getting an "insufficient storage available" message, even though I have plenty of space on both my phone and sd card. Anyone else having that problem?
Also, an app named "media" has been using up a ton of my battery too. I disabled it in the settings and it hasn't been a problem since, but not sure what that's about.

Not sure about the storage issue. Do you happen to have a lot of files in folders on your phone (like Nandroid blobs)? If so, check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1976666 It could be the media scanner trying to read all the folders. Specifically, check out page 8.
had this issue before and some wake apps eating up my battery. I believe some thing corrupted in system files. I fixed it by factory reset then odin the full rom(can be factory rom rooted 66rom by mr. Robinson).
Has that same media problem when I installed the 4.2 camera. But I froze it now it's all good and if you just updated to jb it takes a while for it to settle

This is what I have recently. Even if in my internal memory is over 400 MB.
Why is that?
File system corrupted?
What is the command to do it from terminal to check internal memory?
Step one, delete the TouchWiz virus from your phone. That should free up significant amounts of space.

How you know that I have some virus? I was going to say that strange windows pop up specially on xda forum itself.
My antyvirus found no problem.
How to remove it?
TouchWiz is Samsung's bloat-tastic tweaks to stock android. It's not a virus per se, just annoying (at least I think so). So basically, Nard's suggesting that you flash an alternate rom.

The used space is about 8.08GB and free space is about 4.48GB. But then in this screenshot the size of whole SDCARD folder is just 6.36GB.
So, what's using the extra 1.4 GB and where is it residing?
Extra notes:
1. Recently I had to factory reset my phone and lost everything on it, and after I added back my files from laptop the space reported was correct. No ghost usage.
2. The thumbnails files in DCIM folder got huge and I deleted them to recover nearly 1.5GB, but I'm not sure if that change actually shows up.
Please help with any insight. Also, does your SDCARD folder and storage usage show such differences?
Internal storage isn't just /sdcard. Its shared with /data so /data/app, /data/data is included.

I don't like Google drive. I use mega. Never had any issues. But then again I'm firmly against Google having so much control over my device.
When you delete it goes to trash. Look carefully and locate it. Empty it
Yep, it's probably in trash and needs to be emptied. But this will be done automatically after one or two months, nonetheless.
Also, if you deleted really many files, it can take quite some time till all of them show up in trash.
maybe google drive's cache ,try to format cache
