Screen Burn in seems to be fixed permanently. - Moto G4 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys, I sent my G4 Plus to the Moto Service Centre for the screen burn-in/retention problems. The guys there called it Screen Shadow instead.
They told me it would take a week as the display was to be changed, but I received my device back in 2 days.
Been using the device past 4-5 days and I really don't see any traces of Screen retention. I try to look very hard for it, but all the pixels look perfectly the same when the notification bar is pulled down.
I had an LGD before and I still received an LGD after the repair.
I'll let you guys no if there's any problem I face in the future.
FYI, the service centre is in Noida Sector 18, if you guys happen to live in/around Delhi.

Hey mate, I just got my Moto G4 Plus back from service center also and the problem is also fixed.
I re-locked my bootloader and sent it to repair under warranty. Their diagnostic was the same as yours, "Screen Shadow" and they replaced the whole "module" in 2 days.
They said the module is composed by display, touch module and board. They also replaced the gray edge of my device. Mine was scratched.
I'm satisfied with the service provided. I'm from Brazil BTW.

i live in Delhi and thanks for the heads up ill try this service center once I'm done with my exams

I'll repost in a week or two with an update with the screen status.

Will it cost me anything or is it covered in warranty?

Moto repair impresses me. I had my phone completely replaced, out of warranty, for only 75$. Shipped it and received the new device in 48 hours.

Nope, it won't cost a penny if device is under warranty.

After waiting for 2 weeks, I can see that the screen retention/shadow issue seems to be returning. I can see the ghost battery icons (very light though) after around 1-2 hoursof usage.
I'll be hoping the issue doesn't come back again.
Else rooting will be the only way...

I was also having screen retention issue. I just gave a try to one of the app from playstore( though i believe that an app could not cure hardware problems.) But it actually works. They recommend to use app for 8 hours but i used it for only one and half hour. For now there is no screen retention. You can see in the below screenshot, earlier there were impressions of data and wifi signals but now they are gone.

If you've rooted, you could use the Elemental X kernel and modify the max RGB values for the display. I think that worked for many people.

Yeah that could also be the solution but this seems to work better.

Hopefully it doesn't burn the screen evenly to create a false impression ?
I used blue light filter before the repair, but had to increase the filter from 5 to 15% as the problem worsened later.

Yep, I have all the RGB values set at 240 and no more screen retention.

If i relock my bootloader and give it for repairing, they will replace it ?
They will get to know that my phone was rooted before?

That is not working for me anymore.. it just reduce the amount of burn in..
adjusting rgb values in live display works fine for me in lineage based roms for me..

Does adjusting RGB values remove it permanently (till they are set at 240) ?
And relocking the bootloader and giving for repair depends on the Technical level of the service centre. But most probably they won't take it.

Here is my experience.
I had no screen shadow or burn in on stock for more than 6 months. I decided to root the phone and bam I got the screen shadow. I had to set RGB colors to 91% each or 233 of 256 and that works every time (EX kernel). Any higher and I'd see very light screen retention.
I had some battery issues recently and wanted to test stock kernel again to see if it is kernel related. So I went back to stock without locking the bootloader also in the hopes that it would fix the screen retention. The screen retention is still there.
I am using two apps from PlayStore to fix it on stock:
ScreenAdjuster and Bluelight filter for eye Care. They both work and I like the ScreenAdjuster better. Can't really tell there is a difference in contrast while for the latter (Bluelight) there is a small tint. Set all the values to 5% and have it start on boot. (For Bluelight you need to set it to 6%and pick the dark grey). Then hide either app from notifications and menu. Use only one of these of course.
The screen retention with any of these tricks will go away after about 10-15 min or reboot.
Before my warranty runs out in October, I will lock the bootloader and try to get it repaired.
PS: my battery performance is only slightly better on stock and I will probably go back to Invicta soon. I miss substratum.
Edit: kunalgupta1, anytime the values go back to default, the screen retention comes back over a few minutes. As long as it is set to 233 it will be gone.
Cheers

Read above. Set all three RGB values to 5% and make sure it starts on boot. It may take a few minutes for the retention to go away.

Thanks

Screen issue with low brightness S7 - horizontal lines interference?

Hi,
When I have low brightness the screen the screen shows black horizontal lines as if it was like an interference.. (it's very visible on 0:27 in white background)
Do not know if its a hardware or software problem but when I increase the brightness the lines disappear.
video: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B64u8H_erzPTc3d0bHRsR3BNUms
or https://youtu.be/8Z3xWsanVLQ
It's very annoying, anyone else experienced this?
I haven't had that issue with mine. Could be software or hardware. If you really wanna make sure just do a factory reset without restoring apps and if it comes back it's a hardware problem.
Hi, anyway to backup everything so I can test ?
I'm also having this exact problem and i only received the phone today.
Mine appears to happen more significantly straight after an unlock of the phone (from the lock screen) , it does not appear to happen as frequently when the brightness is turned up fully however.
I have factory reset the phone (without restoring ANYTHING from other accounts/backups) and this has not helped. What's interesting is this is happening during the phones initial installation/setup also.... so before I've even entered any account info , i lock the screen and then unlock and i'm presented with flickering horizontal lines which remain for about 10 seconds and then the screen eventually rights itself, so this proves that it is not a user data issue.
It's also worth noting that this does not happen every time i lock and unlock. I've tried removing expandable memory, with an without charge cable , with screen brightness set to auto and off auto , taking the sim out, auto rotation on and off and none have stopped the issue. I'm going to call my provider tomorrow to see if i can get a replacement , but if thought i'd add my 2 cents

Hi
yes occasionally it happens with lock screen... and yes with max brightness it seems not happen...
Everything on my phone works perfectly, I don't have any other issues common which are reported here but this it's so annoying :s
I think it's the auto britghtness service but I don't know how to disable it.
Can you test if in VSCO app when you change filter it happens too more strongly (like it happens to me)

I've always just disabled auto brightness using the check box labelled (auto) next to the brightness slider .....?
And I've downloaded that app and yes it's also happening when i change the filters.
I've just come off the phone with my provider (vodaphone) and ordered a replacement which is free, as i only got the phone today
I haven't found any similar threads for this same problem for the S7 specifically (at the time of writing this) , but there seems to be similar issues with some nexus devices too , which also use AMOLED screens so could just be that we're the unlucky ones and have faulty devices. If your's is in warranty i would get it replace

the problem is that I 'm not already within 14 days and I did not want to be several days ( or weeks ) without S7.
How do I know if they give me a new one or try to fix this one ?
Can you show me the links with this similar problem on nexus?
what piece of hardware is faulty ?
what is for sure this is not a software issue. is it a problem of the screen or the integrated graphic chip ?

When I increase the brightness to the Fullest Maximum and Tick the Auto box, then the Black stripes on the screen disappears, but if I lower the brightness then they start appearing, the more I lower the brightness the thickness of the Stripes become heavier. Please help me someone on how to fix this issue. My phone barely one moth old. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

Hello,
It seems we have the same problem, I will proceed with warranty.
After a month of purchasing, the brightness sensor is failing, and the screen horizontal white lines. (Image 1)
drive.google.com/ open?id= 0B2Kw-KtTnhcSSGFraExIVEZ1Qzg
Then adjust the sensor to the maximum or minimum lines become smaller. (Image 2)
And finally if I expose the sensor in the sun or in this case to bright light (Figure 3) lines on the screen disappear.

may i know what model is your affected unit? is it s7 edge color black?
same issue here on my girlfriend's s7 edge from EE. im going now to ask for a replacement. i dont bother i have insurance but i'm still curious if it is the oled related problem or other component. in my opinion as technician it's a hardware related issue. I only think about i've never meet any software /os to have that issue ever. how can a software can do that if there are lines overthere specified for drawing certain things, the stripes/lines cannot come out of nowhere
First it was the dead pixels issue on the screen on the s7 n now the screen flickering lines on s7 edge n s7 ... These are not software bugs these are serious hardware issue very disappointing samsung shame even their gorilla glass is also a lie easily scratchable screen
Finally found a complete solution here.
Works like a charm.

Yes, I have my phone 3 years and the screen has been getting more and more dim over the last few months. The bottom 7/8s of the screen is darker thsn the top 1/8.

Can anyone with recent Tmob Software update confirm- Always On Display behavior

Looks like the AOD is no longer shifting every few minutes to avoid burn in. I've been watching for the past 30 mins and have not seen a change- anyone else?
it's possible they just increased the length of time between shifts.. When I lock and unlock- sometimes the position changes, but not when I leave the phone locked.

I can confirm this. I also notice they've changed the hue of the font to a cooler white entirely, possibly to compensate for a static position.
Each time i tried to update it say update failed after the installation android screen after reboot. Anyone have that problem?

I wonder if the lack of switching positions is intentional to help with battery consumption
Sent from my SM-G930T using XDA-Developers mobile app
I am experiencing this same behavior on both mine and my wife's Galaxy S7's since the update. I got online with T-Mobile support and the guy had no clue. After a detailed explanation of what was going on, he wanted to know if I needed to turn AOD back on. I explained it again and he got with someone higher up and then emailed me instructions on how to do a master reset on my phone. I don't think the the customer support people know anything about this and I don't know who to contact to find out if it's going to damage the screen.
The update totally broke AOD. Not only does it not move anymore....it rarely ever gets bright...even in well lit environments. Something is definitely wrong.
Just make sure to log an official complaint with Tmo. Hopefully it gets fixed soon, as AOD had to be shut off. I don't want to risk any screen burn...and half the time, I can't even see it now anyway.

If it is intended to, it isn't helping any. Same 1% per hour as before (as opposed to AOD turned off), measured by Battery Monitor Widget overnight.
Well, on the bright side, that's the 1% per hour I'm not going to be losing any more (at least until they fix it).
UPDATE: on the bright side, I can confirm that it's always picking a new location when you turn the display on and off again (or when the phone does it on its own for whatever reason). It might be just a few pixels off the previous one, but it's new.
I was able to remove the update on my s7 using package disabler pro. Back to how it used to work at the moment.
That update was driving me bonkers lol

Smooth display colour issues?

So I notice something funky today
I'm on Nov sec patch
Dark theme on
If I open the dialler the themes is grey
However if I bring brightness to <50%
Lock my screen then unlock it the theme / colour goes almost purple?
I tried taking screenshots but the result is the same grey colour
Anyone else experiencing this?
Yes, it's the way the screen works at the moment. Its why the 90htz was only used at higher brightness levels, but they tried to please the people complaining about it (Nov patch) and here we are.
So yes it's "normal" behavior for now.

But this shouldn't happen. The 90hz isn't an excuse. It's a bug. The OnePlus didn't ever have this issue .
I've turned always on display and the issue goes away, but if I get a notification the horrible green returns, I turn the screen off and back on and it goes back to normal ...no tint. It's a really fustrating and rubbish bug

Take off force 90hz just leave smooth display on
No aod, or motion sense and no adaptive brightness or ambient eq
Put the brightness down in a dark room, open the dialler, lock the screen the unlock it
I just tried it on 3 pixel 4xls and all had the same thing
You can see the color change back when you put the brightness back up
Sometimes it doesn't stick but changes back pretty quick
At times it gets stuck purple ish

I know how to do it, and as I stated, I can't seem to replicate it on my 4XL. Brightness was at 15% when I tried it yesterday evening after sundown and in absolute darkness of my bedroom. Didn't test it prior to November Patch, so I can't tell if I had it previously.

It's probably not going to be fixed until next month by the earliest. So either you have to put up with it or return it and get a different device. Sounds like returning it will be your best route cuase it seems to bothering you to the point where it's starting to cause stress/distress in your life and nothing is worth that honestly.

Good luck! I'm tired of the exchange game for oleds, it's very tiring. Did it with the Pixel 2 and now the galaxy tab 6 and did it once for this device for the purple hue and I just want to stop now. All the back and forth with Google support just saps the life right out of my body. Then having to pack everything up and set it all up put another screen protector. I still have a tab s6 with uniformity issues that doesn't show up in normal usage so I just gave up lol.. Years ago I would of kept going until I got perfection/near perfection with the chance of possibly having Amazon blacklist my account from all the returns/exchanges.

Question Screen Flicker During Unlock

Every time I unlock my screen, whether it's with the fingerprint or pattern, the screen will flicker for half a second. Super annoying because it's a bright white flash.
It's not face unlock assistive lighting, as I've ensured that is turned off.
I've also tried every display setting possible, toggling things like vision comfort, comfort tone, refresh rates, display calibrations, changing wallpaper, and so on.
Really hoping this isn't a hardware issue because I'm also noticing my touches don't register all the time, unless I'm pressing the screen slightly harder. Not sure if it's my screen protector but I am left a bit concerned.
Any ideas? I've Googled this a bit and I've noticed others have the same issue but on OnePlus 6 devices for the most part, not the 9 series. If anyone has run into this before and knows a fix, I'd love to hear it, thanks!
That's how the fingerprint works. It increases the screen brightness to the max usually. It's the flaw of using that kind of fingerprint rather than sonic like Samsung. Believe it takes a picture of your fingerprint and compares vs ultrasonic gets a 3D image, the difference is in speed too, optical is faster, but ultrasonic technically more secure and does not rely on lightning conditions. I personally prefer the hardware on the back kind over both.

I don't remember it being this prominent on my previous OnePlus devices, though. My 8 Pro did not flicker as aggressively as this one does. It's enough for me to clearly notice it, even in brighter areas; this is why I've been left with a bit more concern than usual.
Not to mention this occurs even if I use my pattern to unlock.
Not sure. Mine does the same but doesn't bother me in the least bit. If it happened at other times other than unlock would be different story.

Any chance you could try and make a video of it happening on your device? I just want to see if it's the same thing as mine. That way, I'll have a better idea of this being a defect or normal behaviour.
I know, it's kind a big ask so no rush! If you ever have time. I can do the same if anyone needs to see what I am talking about exactly.
Update:
I've noticed the issue occurs only if the lock screen is showing. If ambient display is on and the fingerprint icon shows at the bottom then the device will unlock without flickering. The fact that it's happening only when the screen is on at the lock screen, is what's making me feel like maybe it's not a hardware problem. Very odd issue...
Another update,
After doing more Googling I came to the conclusion that it's a hardware issue over software. I tried to factory reset and the issue was still present.
I couldn't update the software on the phone though. It kept telling me that there was an installation problem. I'm guessing that's because I had previously used a rooted EU boot img and a factory reset through the phone settings isn't enough to get rid of that. I'm hoping the repair center won't fault me for sending the device back with an unlocked bootloader. Doesn't seem like OnePlus would do that anyway, given how open they are with the modding community.
Once I receive the replacement of test to see if the issue was still there and will update this thread.

One time I sent them bricked device and they still accepted the return. Returning unlocked bootloader phone shouldn't be a problem.
What made you think it was hardware since I see other people have the same thing. Hell I had it too. I don't seem to have that problem after updating to latest firmware. Seems to be software to me.
Hope it gets fixed. I saw a thread for it on OnePlus community forum, so hopefully OnePlus knows.

When I sent the phone away for trade in there was no mention of rooting or bootloader unlock. Just wipe it.of your info and data.

Thinking it's hardware because my 8 Pro doesn't literally cause a white flash of the entire screen, it would just up the brightness which is normal.
And I was also noticing my touches only registered on more firm presses. Made me think it could have been a bad display panel.
Didn't want to take any chances especially while inside the 15 day return/replacement window.

Yeah good plan.
It absolutely does NOT do that on mine. Only the fingerprint area gets bright, not the entire screen.

+1 on the 9Pro
According to the OnePlus support section of the site, the progress shows as "Inspected". I assume the next step is shipping out a replacement. Hopefully it's soon, will post an update on the new unit.
Thanks for letting me know you guys aren't experiencing the issue, makes me feel good about my decision of sending it back. Almost didn't do it because I didn't want to come back to this Pixel 5 after being spoiled by that 9's screen size lol.
Got the replacement today, after some testing it seems like this unit has no issues! There is a clear difference between this one and my original. There was a blinding white flash even when using my pattern to unlock. Same thing when double tapping the lock screen to put the device to sleep.
This has no white flashes so definitely seems like a hardware issue. Finally, I can start enjoying this thing!

How bro it can be a hardware issue.. it's only happens on low brightness when you unlock the phone right?I am also facing the same issue but it is not there where I unboxed the phone and used it for 1day after receiving update to os 11.2.7.7only this problem starts to me..so how can it be a hardware issue

No it happened on any brightness. It was just more noticeable in low brightness and reading through the same issue on OP forums, others were confirming it is hardware related as a complete factory reset isn't able to resolve the issue. If it was software related, a complete restore would have/should have fixed it. Your issue might be different from what I was experiencing.

Stuck pixels at 60hz and not at 120hz

Hi I baught a Galaxy A52s 5G two days ago and I noticed after switching to 60fps from 120fps that 2 pink stuck pixel appear in top left area of my screen. When I turn the refresh rate to 120 the pink pixel color disappears (they works normally). Any game running at 60hz also shows these pixels. Last time I was playing a new stuck pixel appeared, this time its color is cyan, when I looked at the pink pixel that gets stuck i found out that it started working normally, and after 1 minute the cyan one disappeared and the pink reappeared again. After inspecting using a white image i noticed another light blue one at the top too. When I play Genshin Impact it annoys me sinse I have never had this issue with my previous galaxy phones. I'm asking now if there is a fix to this. Thank you to anyone who will reply to me.
Try clearing the system cache.
Try a hard reboot.
Try it in safe mode.
Test the display with ScreenTest.
Factory reset, test before loading 3rd party apps.
However it sound like a defective display matrix or mobo. Return it if you can't resolve the issue.

The first three did nothing. the display test in 60hz shows the defect pixels while the same test in 120hz does not show any.
Does this mean that its definitely a hardware failure ? i hope that its only a software issue. I used the samsung members to report the error, I dont know if they wilp ever reply, I reported yesterday night.
The defect pixels are visible as soon qs I click on the 60hz and hit ok in Display settings, and they magically disappear after selecting 120hz and hiting ok.
Edit: knowing the samsung service in my country i'm almost certain that they will just mock me and laugh about this as its not really visible unless you really look for it.

I'm leaning more towards it being hardware than firmware in this case.
Samsung has had a lot of issues with their variable refresh rate displays.
I would really make the seller eat this one.
Your call.

Thank you for your replies. I wish i could make them change the phone but i'm certain they wont. I read in many posts of people who encountred the same issue, and even if they accept to replace the screen I know that the people who do repairs at samsung are really bad and dont care about scratching your phone or using visible glue to assemble it, I had an experience with A20 which had its fast charging broken and only charged at 5w, they replaced the bottom piece that houses the usb port but the back was very scratched and you can see the glue used, and I wasn't even sure if its really mine or someone else's phone as they factory reset it before working on hardware stuff. Let alone the time they need to get the part and fix it.
I'll just hope that they'll fix it, a friend of mine told that screen hardware defects can be corrected by software, bit if it was hpu defect i dont think there is mush they can do.
Anyway thank you for your replies its really appreciated.
I would do a refund for cash. Not sure what consumer rights you have in your country.
In the US I can right the defective product and if a MC or Visa was used the bank can do a charge back to the merchant for a full refund.
I think it's a matrix failure, a capacitor(s) or thin-film transistor(s). It could be the OLED pixels themselves. They are very complex displays.
