I can get my phone to backup to the Samsung account and cloud but if my sdcard is In it takes an ungodly amount of time to calculate the amount of music I have on the sdcard so I give up.
I've switched it dso it doesn't backup my music (which is on the 128gb memory card) but it still wants to calculate it every time.
I want to be able to backup without having to take the memory card out
Any ideas?

I have a 200Gb card with loads of images and music and don't have any issues. Did you disable any services with Package Disabler pro? That might be an issue as when you restore a backup from the cloud you have to re-enable all services.
Could be a fake SD card. Did you buy it from a reputable seller? Fake cards can be incredibly slow or take ages to scan contents because they often use shady tactics to make the card appear to be 128Gb for example when accessed on a phone or PC while in reality being much smaller in capacity (2-16gb etc). These fake cards can look incredibly convincing too so dont be fooled by an elaborate copy.
Here's an app from the Play Store that can check if you have a counterfeit sdcard, SD Insight. The app isn't compatible with the S8 but if you have an older phone you can test your sdcard.

If its been with you for at least 3 phone cycles, was the speed ever really that good to begin with? It sounds like it may be an older card perhaps. Keep in mind, technology moves quick.
If you happen to be using a card that was cheap/midrange only a couple years ago, it would stand to reason that it may be underwhelming and feeling pretty slow by today's standards.
Download an app along the lines of "A1 SD Bench" and run a test for me. Post your Read/Write speed results in here for us when you're finished.
If the result of this test is poor you may want to look at the newer UHS-I supported cards if speed is becoming an issue.

Why even bother posting if you "you can't be bothered to test the issue?"
Because I decided I wanted to.
I tend to do what I want and considering the card is in 100% working order what's the point.
If times have changed and I've gotten to answer that it's old tech I can replace it with newer tech.

Ah yes, I figured that was the case. It will be interesting to know if that new card solves your problem. If you still want to run a quick benchmark on your old card its not as involved as it sounds. If you use the app I recommended before you just choose your SD card in the UI and it should only take a few minutes to run a speed test.

Oh wow, that write speed is pretty terrible. The read speed is "passable" I guess but still below average and well below the UHS-I cards.
I had one of the first 64GB Sandisk cards (around the time of the Galaxy S4 I'd like to say?) so I know what you mean but that thing was relegated to my drawer long ago after I realized just how agonizingly slooow it was.

it isn't slow
it's perfect for listening to music from and saving all pics to. perfect to the point of there would be no need to change the card. exceptional performance.
why the s8 has issues trying to calculate the amount of music on it to back-up even when i've toggled it NOT to backup music is a bit of a stupid upgrade on the s8 when the s7 was fine.
maybe samsung haven't figured out that most sd card users just throw pics, film and music on it so it doesn't need to be super fast as they've toggled off the backup option. seems to be a really strange software decision to try and calculated stuff to back up you don't want backing up lol
Objectively it is on the slow side but I understand what you mean. If all you plan on doing is copying a load of files to it once and only need it to access a few songs or pics here and there than you're right it should be fine. Let us know if you're able to solve your issue with a new card or whether the problem persists. :good:

Sounds very much like a hardware bug. I'd get the phone replaced under warranty if I were you.
Are you flashing stock ROMs or custom ones? The custom ones may be less stable than the stock, but you shouldn't be having the problem you describe anyhow. Does anybody else have access to the phone? It's entirely possible for kids to accidentlaly hard-reset the phone; it takes a little effort but less than you might think.
i flash custom roms and no one touch the except me and my phone warranty expired
It's entirely possible that the custom ROMs are buggy, and even slightly possible that they damaged the phone somehow (not likely, but possible). Have you tried flashing a stock ROM and seeing if the problem continues? Be aware that it will overwrite HSPL if you do so, but it's easier to re-unlock the bootloader than handle constant hard resets.
If that doesn't fix the problem, you're probably SOL. I've not heard of anybody else experiencing what you describe unless it was a hardware problem. I guess you could try opening up the phone (it's tricky but totally possible, especially if you don't mind voiding your already-expired warranty) and re-seating the internal microSD card.
i opened the phone and re-seated the sd card now i must wait 5 days
if it reset again i will try to flash it with the stock rom
I hope that helps! Sorry I can't offer more advice (except to search for anybody else who has had this problem). My HD7 has stayed perfectly stable without a single unexpected hard-reset, so I can't help you from experience.

This could be the cause, if the card is not 100% compatible/fast enough etc. After 5-7 days of use the memory card could reach a point where it has certaint level of data and the problems start.
EDIT: Asking because you so nonchalantly told you opened the phone and re-seated the sd card, kind of gave me the impression you did it before?

hhh yes i did it before to change the sd card from 16gb to 8gb class 2
i noticed that if i put the phone in my pocket it became too warm from the down back side maybe this is the cause of the problem
and it get very hot if i put it in charge too
The class 2 card is too slow, stock is class 4. Putting too slow card in the phone can cause all sorts of problems.
I changed on my HTC 7 Pro from SanDisk 8gb class 4 card to SanDisk16 class 2. After 4 days or so it started to cause resets and after little more time programs wouldnt run anymore etc.
Now I ordered a Samsung 32gb class 10 that people all seem to have good results. It was 32eur delivered. The phone is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy faster and no more problems at all. I installed it a week ago.
What I read its not only the class either, some cards seem to have compatibility issues also. This Samsung card seems to be working for everyone, but there are more choises.
The "class" rating on SD cards is a rough measure of their sequential read and write speeds. This is important for things like cameras, which need to rapidly write a lot of data in a smooth sequence. The phone needs a certain amount of this, but not much - Class 4 cards are about as slow as you can buy today, and will do just fine. What the phone does need is extremely fast random access. Many SD cards, especially "high-speed" ones, actually perform relatively poorly in this regard. It's generally not tested for, either, so even within the same brand of card individual chips may vary.
Im sure whats above is correct, I dont know much about the tech side of this.
However Im pretty sure the OP's problems are due to the sd change.
The thing for me and what Ive read for others too, is that the problems do not start right after change of the card, everything looks normal for a while.

Well I know about the fake cards, specially on eBay. I bought from eBay , German seller, member since 99 and sells a lot of memory.
The seller seems to have raised the price for the card little since I purchased, I paid 27,90+shipping. (he had +10 sold at that point, now 40)

EDIT: The price seems to be at the right ballpark for this card. I saw similar price (discounted) for the same card on some store link posted here at XDA. It was some of the topics regarding memory upgrade on WP7 device (most likely at HD7 or HTC 7 Pro section).

I have to hard reset my phone this weekend due to a bizarre problem with Internet Explorer on my phone, if that doesn't fix it, I may swop out the sd card and flash my first Rom

Im using Ansar's lates rom btw. When I started to have problems with the old card I didnt flash a new rom, just changed the card and did a hard reset... Tomorrow I think it will be 2 weeks with this new card, no weird behaviour at all.

I was going to post this in response to a couple of people in the development sections but my post count is too low so I'll post it here instead.
The SD slot in this phone seems to have an issue with corrupting SD cards, I've had to format both my old and new SD card multiple times with this phone as it becomes unusable every few days. I'm not versed enough in hardware to know if this is a bad connection between the SD slot and the "motherboard" of the phone. I've seen a number of people have their SD cards go bad with this phone and I assume that means we had a manufacturing issue. It would be really cool if a hardware hacker experiencing this issue could take a look inside and confirm whether or not the hardware is connected correctly.
Well, perhaps there's a high number of bad readers....

No issues here. I tossed the crappy class 2/4 that shipped with my Epic long ago.
Well I found an extra class 4, 2 GB SD card lying around the house when I was cleaning today. It may be that the local shipment of phones was bad, so if this SD card goes on me then I'll try exchanging the phone in another town just to be safe.
Just out of curiosity does anyone know whether Sprint orders enough phones for replacements with their original shipments? I'm not from a very large town so I'd imagine they would keep replacing with phones from the same batch.
I've got a Samsung 32GB class 10 mSD.
Nearly everytime I reboot my Photon Q it says "SD Card is damaged".
Go into settings, Mount SD Card once or twice and it works.
I've read, that other Android Devices have also problems with that size of SD Cards. (Google)
I had also problem in recovery restoring a backup, the restore process didn't went correctly
(said that everything was fine), had to use my 2GB mSD, which worked nicely and the backup also.
So I think it's an android/kernel issue than a hardware issue.
I have noticed that I get the corrupt sdcard error everytime I try to use the "mass storage" or "media device" setting with Windows.
I use Ubuntu 99% of the time and leave it connected in "camera" mode, have never had that pop up like that...
I usually just use ADB to copy everything anyway so I do not miss the "mass storage" mode at all.
Just had a 16gb class 10 microcenter branded card go belly up on me. Phone just all of a sudden said it was removed and now nothing seems to recognize the thing. The mount option is completely greyed out, and does the same on my note 10.1 if i pop it in there.
When your cards have gone did they completely disappear and refuse to read?

You guys really shouldn't be using high class cards in a phone - there's really no benefit, as phones use SD card's very differently from camcorders or cameras...
On my ooooold phone, anything above Class6 was bad juju. I have always had class4 or lower cards, no fried cards (yet... lol)
kinda what I am feeling too. Not sure what class card I have but it was just a cheap 32gb from wallmart... Only had that error pop up once with this one though, and that was after trying to use usb storage.

Class 10 shouldn't make a difference to a device. The class/speed only comes in to play when transferring data from/to a computer, which will be faster on Class 10 vs Class 4 or 6.

As best as I can tell, thats a negative. Ive been running with a 32GB class 10 since around when the phone was released, and Ive had no issues. Quite surprising on its own, seeing as I abuse the poor thing. True that class 10 arnt useful for the phone specifically, but some shops only carry class 10 cards.

Perhaps the cheaper no-name / off-name brands have a much higher failure rate....?
I'm not really sure, short of actual hardware issues on the device.

Well here is my experience:
I am using a new san disk 32GB class10 micro sdcard. It was never format ed/ used before. The q itself formated the disk.
I have had no problems until using the twisted asanti prebuild
Version. Since then I only got problems with the qu saying the sdcard would be corrupt, after reboot. ( I expected some additional wired things, like the currents widget, which I deleted before reboot reappeared). So I would suggest it is an error in un mounting the sdcard before shutdown, which causes this failure.
Since I usually do not reboot the phone expect for flashing new roms, I had no trouble since then.
Hope this might help to further circle the problem, and maybe find a solution for this.

Since CM10 I haven't noticed any SD-Card issues, but I have the feeling, that there are some issues, which aren't detected.
In the last few days my CM10 was acting weird.
1. The gallery (together with the camera app, 2in1 app) disappeared in the App Drawer (was still in /system/app) and didn't appear again after overwriting gallery2.apk again.
2. The Google Weather App had a graphical issue, so I was sure, that there was a flash issue by restoring ASA14 and flashing CM10 (from SD-Card!).
I solved this issue in copying the nandroid backup and CM10 to the phone and flash it from there.
I have tested my SD-Card in my external cardreader, it had no issues in doing so.
My guess is, that the SD-Card needs more power than the Photon Q can give and is losing some read/write commands.

I think This may have hit the nail on the head. I have had a couple cheap discount cards die but they really died. Cant even read in the PC and one even got really hot when plugged in. Got a good branded card from amazon and havent had a problem since.

I've used better Samsung and Sandisk cards and have had this issue. It just randomly wipes all my data and creates the LOST.DIR with it all in there, but file names are all renamed and would takes years to sort through and try to figure out what is what. All my photos, music, etc.. were basically gone then. It didn't matter that the card was a name-brand or not. I've had the issue with several cards.
I constantly have this problem as well, and I've found that mounting the SD card with a reader or in another phone in a Linux environment fixes it for the most part. I think files still get lost, but you get most of what you had back.
I got a 32GB UHS1 card last week and it hasn't had a problem.

i got my A9 2 days ago and have a fault with it rebooting randomly and will be getting it replaced,,
but my question is about the SD card aspect..
i fitted a Lexar 64GB Class 10 High Speed Micro SDXC Memory Card and after formating as internal and migrating the data i had a system message saying that the card was slow and suggested using a card class 3 or better.
is this normal? have not noticed any performance issues since doing so.. just curious to see if anyone else has had similar messages after putting in the SD card.
I might be off base here, but is it possible that the card itself is a fake? Have you run a speed test on it?

have run a couple of tests but not sure what speeds i should be getting for this card..
cant post a screen shot yet as im a new user..
the results from an extended accurate test
are
1.52 GHz
read 38.6Mb/s
write 38.6Mb/s
when running one of the tests it did say that its cached the data as either there was too much free space or the SD card is slow.
Honestly, that's a little weird. The results seem a little low for a high end new card which should have speeds of 80Mb/s and up, but also too high for a fake which is usually lower than 10Mb/s.
Since you're getting the device replaced anyway, it might be a good idea to re-check once you have the new unit just to make sure it isn't some bizarre issue with that specific handset.
To compare, I've currently paired my A9 with a 32GB Samsung Pro card, and haven't seen such a warning message.

I am brand new to the Android world (2 months) and have been following this forum since. I have figured out how to flash my verizon model s7 to the universal, have figured out the best case and best glass screen protector.... I have even read extensively on SD cards and their speeds and the differences between adoptable and rooting....
Here's my question: I am an excessive app user, and yes I know the solution to this is to delete the apps I don't use....
But, I would really like to just store apps on my SD card and run them off of the card
I originally bought a SanDisk Ultra 200GB and a SD Extreme 128GB..... but upon further investigation I'm kind of feeling overwhelmed on what to do and which SD to buy.
From what I can find out there are two options for this:
Adoptable:
But, it's kind of buggy.
I don't want my entire phone, pictures, etc migrated over to the SD, just the ability to fully install apps
There are limitations to which apps can be migrated to the SD card
Best to have a faster SD card versus size, but there is still a significant bottleneck, UHSII doesn't work on this phone... so the SD Extreme or faster is best.
Root (Link2SD etc):
The Root for this phone is very buggy and I have seen quite a few go back to stock. And I don't want to trip KNOX quite yet... still under warranty.
Can move any app to my SD!!
SD doesn't need to be fast as long as I don't mind my apps loading slowly (or transfer the used ones to internal...)
Is there in-game lag, after loading, running from a slower SD such as the SanDisk Ultra?
I am full of competing ideas and the wealth of information on this forum and elsewhere is overwhelming me. I have spend over 20 hours in the last couple weeks researching this issue alone....
Please, any and all guidance and help would be very very appreciated. Thank you!

Hello! I chose the SD extreme 128. Upon further investigation it seems you cant truly install and run apps, app data and all from the SD card with adoptable, the only way to do that is with root access. So I went for the faster sd which put up really gread numbers. There is an SD card discussion I also posted in with my results and they beat the other same tier cards and rival some of the more expensive ones. I use the card mosty for 3D movies for my gear vr and have put a lot of apps on it (not tbe data of course which takes up the most space). I am awaitkng the day my Samsung warranty expires to root because 32 GB kinda sucks.
However, it would be safer to go with the faster card for adoptable anyway.
Also, I can record HD video directly to it while the 200GB cannot do that.
Been using a 200gb that came free with the purchase of the V20. Gonna pass this off to my son. I'm running out of room and wanna carry more. This 400gb should give me enough room. ?
Anybody else using one in the v30/+?
All set up. 367gb free. I can pretty much use the internal 128gb for whatever phone wise (apps), and this for the downloads and music (I store mine locally). I do have a streaming account though, but prefer my collection on my SD card.

The Samsung cards are really good too. They offer a 256gb.

My last three phones (gen3 Galaxy Nexus, LG Nexus 5, Moto XT1225) didn't have microSD cards, although the 2014 Moto XT1225 (unofficial smaller version of the Moto Nexus 6) did have 64GB internal storage. I ordered a 256GB card from that page -- which eventually will be in addition to my 128GB V30+ when it comes.
Now trying to decide what my wife's LG V30 will get. That 200GB is only $73 right now and looks very tempting for her phone.

$73 for a 200gb doesn't seem bad, it's actually a way better value compared to the 400gb. But I was going for size. My 200gb held up well for the time I used it though.

Using "A1 SD Bench" gives the results posted below. My PC doesn't have USB 3.0 yet as this spring is my lustrum update year for the motherboard, ram and CPU. So it's not really worth testing on there.

If anyone wants some stats on the card here is an post from the V20 forum and what I got of test:
Okay I got the Card of SanDisk Ultra micro SDXC UHS-I Card 400 GB "Well actually less then 400 GB because of companies continuously lies which seems to be of no end to it" and it is running much faster then my old samsung 128 evo or evo+. It's not running as fast as your 128 GB samsung pro+ but anyway il find the results. Iv made test with 3 programs on the V20.
First one is A1 SD Bench which you used:
Read 78.14 MB/s - Write 41,21MB/s
Read 78,19MB/s - Write 41,37MB/s
Read 79,45MB/s - Write 42,97MB/s
Read 78,50MB/s - Write 41,07MB/s
Then SD Card Test
Read 88 MB/s - Write 42 MB/s
Read 87 MB/s - Write 42 MB/s
Read 88 MB/s - Write 40 MB/s
Read 89 MB/s - Write 42 MB/s
and last without any advertising AndroBench:
Read 84.16 MB/s - Write 46,59 MB/s
Read 84.39 MB/s - Write 50,16 MB/s
Read 84.81 MB/s - Write 53,23 MB/s
Read 84.25 MB/s - Write 55,9 MB/s
As you can see the write is far from as good as the Card you had of 128 GB... But of cause this is 400 GB and still a good deal faster then my old ones I had. Put a lot of stuff on it already. I also found out my Laptop is getting old as it corrupts the image of the UHD video when playing.... My Mobile seems to actually have more juice in that department then my laptop as it runs fine on the mobile. I tested which quality I wanted to run on my mobile for best video results and used the Pagan New Year in the Winter for it. I did a look at it yesterday and It seems FHD and 60 frames a second gave the best results on the V20.

Flash memory has a finite number of writes to each page before they 'wear out' to some headroom is required to spread out the read/write cycles and manage the storage. This headroom is the difference between the actual size of the card and the amount you get to use. It's called wear levelling. An explanation can be found on Wikipedia.
400GB is a lot! If you use a program like Aftiss (which is on the forums, just give it a quick search) and use the setting "0" when formatting the card, that whole 400GB will turn into Internal Storage. I have it set up that way on my Verizon V30 with a 128GB microSD Card. Just do a backup beforehand just in case anything goes wrong (which it shouldn't.)

Probably not since the microSD becomes the internal storage where all of the "active" system & app files (user changes) are stored

Oops! Didn't see this reply. You are not able to remove the SD Card, well at least not recommended to, because if you removed it and some apps had placed necessary files on it, they won't be able to run. I would strongly recommend against it just because of the dangers that could come with it.

Most harddrive makers and memory card makers has always cheated with the real amount of space.
The last company I know that kept the rules of real storage was IBM who made the Deathstars as they sadly ended up being known by. They then sold there harddrive line to another company, Hitachi or something I think it was. But the thing is when you bought a 20, 40 GB or 60 GB harddrive from IBM you actually got those GB and no cheating.

I rather not as I many times pop it out and into my computer - I don't have time for the stupidity of connecting the phone to the computer and having all these issues with it which should not have been. So mostly because of frustration I end up just popping the SD out of the phone and putting it directly into my computer. Then you can do multiple things on it without any error popping up and have top speed.
I'm using the 400GB with my v30+ simply for Rom back-ups and storing my music.
