Battery Drain Issue - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am facing a lot of battery drain issue. My phone is only a month old . I have updated toemui 5 with nougat. The battery doesn't last for more than half a day. May a little more than that. I'm losing a lot of juice even when the phone is on standby.
I keep closing all apps when I get the message for power using apps. I have disabled most of the apps too from using my battery..
Someone please advice. I also feel that the charging is very slow on my device

Do you use GPS location? Data? Wifi? Do you have strange signal on your SIM?
I found these things that they consume most of the battery.

Do not close just apps but what drains the battery in standby is a lot of wifi, data and cellular..
Try to disable that settings every time you are not useing it.. evan if two sim.. disable the one not needed.. this should help..
But then again I never disable anything and still can go up to 2 days..sometimes one day and having still 40% .. are you on the latest noughat 7??

GPS is rarely on. WiFi is on all the time. Data is usually off..

The phone is a bit quirky when it comes to battery for me. Some days, the power drain is unreal and will lose 10% per hour during standby. Other days, it will sleep all night long and only lose 2-3%. Even stranger, the days when the drain is very high, the stock battery graph shows the phone with minimal awake time. And on the days when the battery is not draining, it will show constant system wake ups when the screen is off for hours. I've only had mine for a few weeks, so I'm hoping it's just reacting to all the apps and settings I keep adjusting and will settle down over time.

I think this issue came with Nougat update... Noone complained with A6..

Many, many users complained about the battery issue on noughat 7. So me to was thinking should I risk to update to N7 or just stay on MM
Couse many users tried it and than did the roll back to MM
So I tried it to and was not having any battery drain
And with the latest noughat version like the B381 I am having or depanding on model it is the B385 or the B387 it not just adds more features like better camera options and functions but it also gives the battery drain fix many already reported that the drain is now gone.. and for me it is evan better battery on B381 then it was on B360.. much better.. like 30% better

Phone idle using a lot of battery?

Sorry if the question has been answered before but does anyone else get a lot of battery drain due to 'phone idle'. I'm unsure whether if deep sleep not working or what but have never had this problem with any other phones I have had.

Yes, I'm definitely experiencing the same problem. I left the phone overnight and it lost almost 7% which is a lot compared to my old Z1 (only 1-2%). Other time is also similar. Sometimes, it feels like it as if actively using the phone actually uses less power than leaving it idle. Looking at the battery chart seems normal but the phone actually discharges fast on standby (sometimes I lost 25% after just 4-5 hours standby) I'm really want to know if others experience this as well and how to fix.
Yes I'm having the same problem.. Phone idle taking more drain than screen right now..
It's deffo a bug with this 7.0 update.. Hopefully it gets fixed in next update..
My battery sucks now after the Nougat update! Drains really quickly on standby. I even turned WiFi scanning off but it didn't seem to help
I am facing the same issue too
Phone idle appears at the top of the list, claiming 135 mah
While my screen states its using 49 mah
Similarly and annoyingly. Since Nougat my phone barely deep sleeps.
My phone was deep sleeping amazingly on mm. But now it barely deep sleeps. Ridiculous update which now requires me to perform a clean full wipe install of Nougat. Which currently I have no time for, hence my battery dies ridiculously fast. Annoying and not what I was expecting, this removed my excitement away from receiving the new Nougat update and instead am left with work to do to get this one back to par.
This has happened to me before on previous Sony phones when installing new ota updates. Clearly something Sony is good at.
For the OP - this is one of the best apps to determine CPU behaviour, simple and to the point. Particularly scroll to the bottom to obtain how well or not the phone deep sleeps.

Since upgrading via OTA to Nougat my device barely deep sleeps, rather it sits at 307mhz when idle. Battery gone to sh!t. Forced to do a factory reset fresh installation (when I get enough time to.)

Thanks,
It's seems the idle just stays on all the time even if the phone is being used..
Sony needs to release a patch for this asap..

Clean install, locked and unrooted, DRM in tact?
Still unfavourable deep sleep?
Then that surely is pointing to a inherent issue with Sony Nougat.
However why isn't everyone here with XZ Nougat complaining the same?
We need more input.
In the meantime I will need to bite the bullet and reset my phone as well and report back.

I got the same problem with you too, 7% after night, my old phone was Z1 to compare too. After update to 7.0 then back to 6.0.1 battery drain is less, but still more than normal.
I also Started to get huge Phone Idol drain (top of battery usage) after OTA update to Android 7 on Stock unrooted, Ive done a complete fresh start through xperia companion and still getting big drain from Phone Idol.
Got the same problems you guys are facing.
My phone did drain from 100% to 88% in just 2 hours (Display on: 35 minutes half brightness, phone calls 10 minutes) and its on WiFi not even mobile data. My girlfriends phone did drain about the same with 35 mins display on BUT calls of 45 minutes.
Oh and idle yeah on WiFi about 1% every hour and on Mobile Data 3%/hour.
This is really bad imho and it's been 2 times I've repaired the device via Xperia Companion. Funny about this is, that always on the first run I get a message "Firmware could not be repaired". Then I restart the whole process and it does just fine. Same with restoring images/videos.
I've started to notice my phone idle is near the top of battery usage. Initially after installing Nougat, battery life was great. Now I narrowly get 5hours of SOT. Currently at 70% and phone idle has used 19% of battery at 196mAh and SOT 1.5hrs with 182mAh. Not sure why the phone is not sleeping.

I upgrade to 7.0 again recently, and it only cost 1% per night, it's quite good . But battery consume while using is not much improvement like idle.
Facing the same problem, though i dont think its actually draining in my case, the phone deep sleeps fine but the drain with screen on is just appaling, since I got it I only got 4 hrs Max SoT thats with MM and N. It just seems that the battery generally sucks.
As of now, i have 84%: sot 23% 48 min - phone idle 20% (time on 4 h 35 min). By this it means i'll get about 3.5 hrs SoT which is normal in my case (though not good in my opinion)
I've just updated to the lastest .374 from .327. From what I experienced, the standby battery life have improved. I left it overnight and it only lost 2% (unlike 7% like before) which is probably ok for now.
Do you want to say.....that leaving the phone all the night....it lose 2% only???? I can't belive....normally it goes down by step of 2/3% for hours....so in 7/8 night you have to lose at least a 20%....minimum....
Well my battery result probably need more testing but it has never lost up to 20% per night. It would be outrageous if that happens. Are you sure there isn't anything that continuously running in the background of your phone? You could try a factory reset? Usually losing that much of battery per hour is only when the phone is actively being used, I think.

battery life mate 9 after update

Hi to every one,
I have mate 9 (MHA-L29C185) before was in B126 and I got OTA update to B138.
before the battery life was amazing and sometimes lastest 2 days without charging but now after said update I am charging the battery every single day with the same usage as before!
could anyone please advise WHY?
No difference here after the update, or if there is it's too small to notice. I'm still getting two full days of use.
Were your battery saving settings changed by the update?
Have you added any new apps?
I had the same experience but it's been getting better. I'm still not back to 10h SOT but I can easily reach 8-9 so all's good.
I assume that after upgrading your device needs to reindex everything again and that might explain the poor battery life right after upgrading. My advice is give it a couple of days to settle down.

Please see my battery usage details & advice
Settings > Battery > Close Apps after screen lock.
Select All.
Leave it run for a day.
I updated to the new update as soon as I took it out of the package. I was losing about 3% per hour even during deep sleep. I would go to sleep at 12 and wake up at 6 and be between 80 to 85%. My LG V20 lost a total of 1 to 2% overnight. I tried resetting the phone, playing around with settings and setting applications to close after screen lock. I then found out it was the wifi killing my battery. The next night with wifi off but data on I lost 1% overnight. Now I get about 2 full days on a charge and around 8 hours SOT.
Especially that WiFi+ sucks a lot of juice! I have it off.
Gents,
Yesterday night before I sleep, the battery was 98% I closed the mobile and went to the bed.
a morning I wake up, and the battery drain from 98% to 80% while it was STBY and no activity!
I check the consumer (see attached) and found mail was from hardware & software especially Android OS!
Please anyone can help? before I update to B138 the mobile was amazing and during the night might only drop 3-4% which is normal, not 18% now :crying::crying:
Have the same experience with 138, draining 20% over the night, my iphone 7 Plus placed side by side with the Mate 9 drains 1% over night. Have done a factory reset but still the same issue. And dont tell my to close all apps when powering down the screen - it is a smartphone and not a dumbphone. Did not buy it to kill all benefits with a smartphone and big battery
looks like some apps hogging your phone so cant go to sleep and by the looks of it wifi scanning is on which keeps the wifi module on while its off consumes more batter, also have a look at the apps with push notification or apps which run in he background. At battery management check the apps which close or not after screen lock.

Whatever they say the actualization for the B138 radically changed the battery consumption ..... up to B126 was fine.
I did not realize because in the changelog it said that it optimized the consumption of the battery, it really optimized for the worse .... huawei(Idiots) go to sleep because I should have corrected the problem, but they are sprinkling for customers, I'm going to sell mine and I do not want any more xinocas.

I dont see it getting worse. Its good for me

You're a lucky one ... from the reports I see, all malta is talking bad about this update.
Downgrade do you know how to do it for the C432 B126 Portugal? That's how it worked, because I do not understand any of this.

Granted I'm not getting 10h SOT like I did back with B126 but I'm getting 8-9h now with B138 so no complaints here.
This model has been released only 2½ months ago and I've already seen 2 firmware upgrades. They're clearly active, I wouldn't sweat it.

If it get better or not after the update i don't really care cause in both firmwares i couldn't make the phone die in 1 day and that's what matter.

Has there been any fixes to the battery drain issues with 7.0 update on Honor 8 (US)?

Hi, I have upgraded to Android 7.0 on my Honor 8 yesterday and since then the battery is draining at an insane pace.
I used to get an overnight standby drain of 3-5% on average with 6.0 and it is well over 25% with 7.0. Something called "Android System" has consumed a disproportionate majority of the battery. A similar problem is reported here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/help/battery-dropped-40-nougat-honor-8-t3558197
The background app settings haven't been changed -- have about same 6-7 apps like Whatsapp, Outlook, etc. However, when I open the current background apps, I see a few unprotected apps (like Maps) also running in the background. Is this a bug?
Please help out, if there are any fixes.
Thanks.
try apps like greenify to fix wakelocks

Many users are dealing with this problem and I've reported before.. This update is broke, and shouldn't have been pushed officially. There are a lot of bugs, and the most irritating one is the battery consumption.
And I don't think Honor is going to fix any of it since we're used to them not caring about what we deal with.
My personal experience with the Nougat update was that battery drained quicker than usual for the first few days, then it stabilized to normal levels (i.e. more or less what it had been in Marshmallow). I was expecting this behaviour, since system upgrade clears out battery optimization data, and it takes a couple of days for the OS to learn what to optimize. Also I suggest you recheck your battery saving settings (Both the Huawei version under Battery settings and the Google version under Applications).
And since someone is going to ask anyway: no, I haven't done factory reset. There was no need.
But this was just my personal experience with nougat. It's of course quite possible that for some people there is a real constant battery drain (wouldn't be the first time, I had a similar experience with my old Motorola when I upgraded to Lollipop a couple of years ago).
It's not the update. From my experience, I had this issue since I bought the phone. I would factory reset it all the time and this issue would persist.
It turns out that in my case, I would always turn off LTE and use WCDMA instead. My logic being that WCDMA uses less power, so therefore I would get better battery life. Nope. There's a glitch that happens if you do this and have wifi on, It doesn't let the phone go into deep sleep. Ever. So your battery drains about 20℅ overnight.
The solution for me was to simply leave LTE on, and now my battery consumes like 1℅ overnight.
For those suffering from battery drain, check your consumption and see if Google calendar sync is taking up a lot of it.
I had that issue, and had to manually kill the sync (from the accounts screen).
It seems to be an issue on all Huawei devices on 7.0, the native calendar isn't playing well with sync, and unless you're rooted and can uninstall it, you're stuck. (I'm waiting to root until a patch comes out for all these issues first)
All in all, if this is how Huawei treats their devices, and their customers, I won't buy another one of their devices.
I updated via Charles method, but my mother's L04 still hasn't gotten the update. And probably never will unless I do it manually.
Very disappointing.

Thanks. I was thinking of waiting for a couple of days too. Its just been 12 hours and the battery is almost down to 25% from 100%. If it doesn't improve in the next few days, I'll revert to 6.0 with which I had solid 1.5 days battery life for my usage level.
On my frd 09 i got a update after the nougat update which fixed my battery drain it was around 356 mb big. But since maybe 1-2 weeks already. And my battery drain is lower as on MM
I do feel Nougat on my L14 is draining faster than MM. It's mostly Android System or Android OS so I have no idea what is within that taking the power. There is also a weird bug with LTE enabled when I make a call to another cell phone. Most of the time, my phone says it's ringing on the other side but there's no "ringing" sound on my side. Weird. Turn off LTE and you can hear the ringing.
It is always hard to determine what is going on in these sort of circumstances. For me, EMUI 5 doesn't seem to have badly affected my battery life. I just got almost 3.75 hours SOT using Waze for navigation, and still have about 30% battery. According to the detailed power info, Waze was using 1340.27 mAh.

Just for balance, my experience is more like this one, although I don't think I had to wait days for it to not be a battery drainer. Is everyone in this thread talking about b360? (for whatever variant you have)? I did see this on b320, but have used b360 for about 1-2 months now (Charles) and haven't had any noticeable difference in battery life from Marshmallow. It drains 1-3% / night. Screen on time , say browsing is pretty regularly 5.x hours, and typically I get 2-3 days out of a charge.
I believe everyone that says they've got a problem, but I guess some of us got lucky. Just so it's known: Mine is a US L04*b360 variant.
Note: Just as a possible point of difference. Before I was on b360, I had the phone rooted, with TWRP, and had to wipe the entire thing , rollback to b160 and use Charles to get b360. I never did a reset and I don't turn off functionality. Also, maybe most important. I don't use social media hardly at all. I haven't got Facebook or Twitter installed because I don't like either.
i would suggest a factory reset, then install only essential apps and test it for a couple of days.
L04 here, OTA updated and I'm seeing better battery performance than MM.

Try going into settings, accounts, google.
Look to see if anything looks like its stuck syncing. If there is, turn that off. Go into the app that was stuck, and swype down to cause it to refresh, then go back into the setting and turn that syncing back on (if you want it to sync).
Does root and Greenify help?
I contacted Honor Support and reported the problem.
I was suggested to "Wipe Cache Partition". It helped a bit but the battery was still draining at a faster rate than 6.0. So I have now been wiping cache partition on a daily basis after a full charge.
I know it doesn't make much sense but it helps contain the drain a bit, at least when connected to the Internet via WiFi. The drain rate remains the same as soon as I switch to LTE (about 2-3% drain per hour with roughly 5-10 minutes SoT).

My phone wasn't rooted. I'd have tried Greenify but it wasn't any app causing the drain; "Android System" is the culprit. I don't know if Greenify could help with that.

Thanks for your comment. My model number is: FRD-L14 and the build number is B360.
Honor Support recommended to "Wipe Cache Partition". I did that without much luck. I have now been wiping the cache partition after every full charge (which is a ridiculous thing to do!). It does help arrest the drain a bit but only on WiFi. As soon as I turn on the Mobile Data, the battery drains at insane speed (about 2-3% an hour with just 5-10 minutes of SoT).

OP6 Always Awake, Poor Battery Life

Hey guys,
I bought OP6 8/128 version and first, the battery life was ok, I was getting 4-5 hours of sot. Now, I see that battery is discharging in constant rate and something is keeping my phone awake all the time. Firstly I thought it was Instagram when it helped when I force stopped it. Now I'm lost 20 percent overnight and battery stats show, that all the time my device was awake. Cannot see anything suspicious through gsam or better battery stats as I believe the put it under android system. Help anyone?
Did you already do a reboot?

Hey guys,
I bought OP6 8/128 version and first, the battery life was ok, I was getting 4-5 hours of sot. From personal experience, i found that updating OTA was the culprit. To get around this, download the full update from Oneplus and update that way.
Ever since i started doing this, I have not had the battery drain issues i used to have. Also, wipe cache before booting phone after update.

So I should try to do fresh install from OnePlus site? Awake time drops when I clear recent apps, so I believe this is either Instagram or Facebook doing this. Really weird. Even without awake time shown in graph, I got 35% drain in 1h sot and 11h standby, this shouldn't be normal, right?
It's crazy, because I used to have a good battery life

for testing, can you uninstall Instagram and Facebook for 1 day and see how your battery life changes.
I can tell you right now Instagram has a prefetch service which causes close to 1-2 hours of wakelock per day for me. I have root so I can disable it but there's no other way from the app itself.

You can just set the app to not use any background data from within Android. I have it on all that's not important for me.
Loose about 0.3% per hour without any apps or mods on beta 2.

So, the story continues... After following your advice and restricting background data for Instagram the wake up time fixed itself, however battery is still draining. Screenshots attached (facebook and time sensors used??)
I will test every available option and if they won't work, I would consider moving to beta oxygen os. Now I'm on 5.1.11
I am ready to trace this to it's roots for people who will potentially encounter this problem in the future.

It could be your spotty connection. Your awake time is fairly high when the mobile network connection goes south. Can you try using something like 3G instead and see if the awake time goes down? As well as the battery drain?
Naturally 3G uses less battery but if you see a drastic difference then it could be the tower connection you have. When the signal gets worse the modem tries harder and effectively uses more battery trying to stay connected.
Have a look if Facebook is allowed to use unlimited background data, I believe there is a setting for it on 5.1.11 aswell (I'm on beta, its a beast.)
There are many reasons not to install Facebook apps on your phone, and this is one of them.

Background data off both for Facebook and Instagram fixed (at least it seems) the overnight drain issue even with airplane mode on. Last time I lost 20-30%, tonight less than 4-5%
Just when I thought I found what was causing the drain, take a look at this: 20min sot and 20% down in 4.5h
Screens attached, still searching for the issue. Android battery stats show no awake time, but something is definitely draining (app usage insanely high on 80%)

So strange.. I feel we still have 3 options here.. 2 old and one new.
Flash 5.1.11 without wiping anything (you won't loose data so it's just an upgrade)
Flash beta 2 dirty as an upgrade, (you might get device corruptednat boot, press power 2 times and forget about the message) you won't loose any data or apps this way either.
Last option is the least fun, clean install of rom :/. If you ask me, I'd go for beta 2 option, if you wanna run something you know is stable go with 5.1.11.
I didn't run into any issues with beta 2 but some are (I believe user error here..)
Changed my mind.... I have 2 more posible fixes.. (I think)
Hmmm, one more thing I just came to think of is try using SD Maid, now this is just a guess that it will do anything at all..
The other thing is flashing a kernel, something could have happened there after an upgrade or something (just a guess.)
I'm running flash kernel now, it's really good

Thanks for your thoughts, thinking of going to beta 2 since I am on 5.1.11 right now. As for flashing kernel, I've been there with custom roms and kernels with several other phones and in the end most of them (except galaxy s5) were working better on stock ones after a while... However, doesn't rooting void the warranty on OP6?

Beta 2 is really good
48 hours and I'm at 18% with soon 9hrs of screen (usage and SS in battery thread)
As of warranty, no, you will still have full. However this shouldn't have to be done as a "fix" , i was just curious if stock kernel somehow got messed up :s

I would suggest doing a factory reset or uninstall your apps one at a time. Considering it's saying kernel wakelock (could be false positive) I would start go straight to factory reset. If going to Android Pie beta 2 is overall stable and forces a reset anyways, then go ahead and do that instead.
Im just getting 5-6hours SOT on my new op6, is this the normal battery life? Was planning on flashing custom kernels? Any suggestions?

So, I can close this case as SOLVED.
Today, phone was mainly on 4g, doing photos, videos, calls, 4 hours of spotify via bluetooth. 3h50min SOT, 16h standby and still 27% left. Dirty install of Beta 2 fixed it! Thanks for your help!

Severe battery drain on s10e. Any suggestions or solutions?

I've been using the phone for two weeks now and the battery drain has gotten pretty horrible the past week. I charge the phone up to 100% and leave it off the charger as I go to sleep from 1am - 9am.
I wake up and my phone has 70% battery left with wifi/data off. [Battery drain](https://i.imgur.com/VkAcAqd.jpg) [Google battery drain](https://i.imgur.com/qjxMkN2.jpg)
Does anyone know what I can do? Is there an app with which I can check on what's draining my battery?

You can check which apps is draining the battery.
Just go Setting, then search for "Device Care", then hit "Battery" -> Battery Usage
All S10 phones have a bug that is causing them to not deep sleep when screen is off, causing poor standby performance. This is caused everytime you receive a VoiP call, so after you receive one, just restart the phone. Being caused a proximity sensor bug.
Try off Biscuitby feature

Try to wipe disable Google app and check battery consumption. If problem persists, try to wipe cache from recovery and if necessary do a factory reset, 30% battery drain in a night without network connections is not normal. If all attempts fail better go to Samsung assistance to change the battery
7hrs: 10% when sleep, wifi on. Not good but I think it is not too abnormal. I think, samsung still have a lot of bloatware!
But on screen I thnik is OK: 5-6h mixing, 3000mA battery on a strong SOC, it's normal. My back up Huawei GR5 2017, 3400mA, it is the same time!
This solution was posted on the S10 forum and certainly helped me.
There's a bug that stops the phone from going into a deep sleep mode post making a call (audio/video) on apps like WhatsApp, Skype et al. The solution for the time being is to reboot the phone once before going to bed. I tried a lot of other things but had a ~2% hourly standby drain which reduced to <5% overnight after figuring out this solution. I have both WiFi and Bluetooth on at night.
You may try to play around with the battery saving tweaks in ONE UI but nothing worked as well as this has. Hopefully there'll be a more practical fix to this soon.
Cheers!
Being as this affects voip calls, does this mean wifi calling is affected too? I mean, that's technically voice over IP.

I tried to debug battery drain using Battery Historian. I noticed that the phone does go to Doze mode completely, but for some reason, CPU stays awake. I'm still new to the tool, will try to find out more about why CPU is kept awake all the time.
I get battery drain regardless I make any VoIP call.
Another issue I noticed is PUBG lags horribly on the phone. I tried different combinations of graphics settings, the game was still lagging.
Just tried pubg...hdr +ultra runs ok for me. No lags, maybe sometime stutters for a sec.

For the first launch, the game runs very smoothly, lag starts after that. The more I play, the more lag I get.
Putting the phone on battery saver mode barely drains any juice (Medium Power Saving mode), seems like it's just a software issue and not hardware specific issue.
By the time Samsung releases any fix, we might have to live with this one.
Since the update this last day or so, my battery is lasting way better than previously.

Which region you are from? Is your phone unlocked? Is it Exynos based?

What update? Can you share the info that came with it? My SM-G970U1 is still on Feb. 1, 2019 patch. Although I don't have any problems with battery drain, pulled out two screenshots lately, both over about 12hrs period, one was with cellular radios on and the other just an airplane mode:
It's mostly Exynos people or the Sprint USA models \ service. No one else is having it really.
Got the March update. Exynos version. Battery drain seems a bit better at first glance. But it's not been long since the update. So not completely sure.
Got the phone today and the battery sucks lol and got an update today as well
My Snapdragon S10e never gets less than 4 hours of SoT under the heaviest use (I am constantly messing with settings, installing\closing\uninstalling apps, etc etc)
If I use it "regularly" just browsing Reddit and such, with a normal phone signal, I get 6 to 9 hours every time.
I don't use dark mode until Sunset.
I leave NFC/Bluetooth/Location on at all times.
