i just bought a used, AT&T variant HTC One A9 from eBay. the seller said that the phone is unlocked, and when i put my Rogers SIM card, it works fine. however, when i go to the bootloader menu (by pressing the volume down and power button simultaneously), the following information appears on the screen after the phone boots:
hTC download mode
*** LOCKED ***

it's interesting that it says "LOCKED" (which i am assuming to mean bootloader-locked and not carrier-locked). unfortunately i didn't know that AT&T variants are not going to get any more updates before buying this phone. i am looking for guides on how to unlock an AT&T A9 and how to update it to the latest Android available for this phone. i am not interested in 3rd party ROMs and only would like to use original HTC ROMs, but updated to Nougat.
could anybody point me to the correct set of instructions to unlock the bootloader, (probably do a S-OFF, if needed), and install the latest HTC ROM for One A9? (FYI, i am comfortable with command line utilities and have previously rooted my HTC One S.)
I did this to my AT&T One A9 not to long ago, I got tired of waiting for AT&T to update the phone to Nougat.
Go here: https://www.htcdev.com/ and follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader.
S-Off using Sunshine (how I did it).
Change CID and MID to the appropriate values.
Flash latest RUU.
Not too bad a process all in all.
^ great! thank you very much.
did you flash an official HTC ROM or a custom ROM? and how do you find your phone with Nougat, in terms of compatibility/bugs/etc.?
i noticed that there is an option called "OEM Unlocking" in the Settings. i am guessing that i should check that option before proceeding with the unlocking process, am i right?

Right
Also note that if you are going to flash a Nougat RUU, you'll need to update your firmware to 2.xx.xxx.x before flashing a 2.xx.xxx.x RUU. See the FAQ #4 in the RUU thread. ATM, this is only required when upgrading from M to N or when downgrading from N to M using a RUU.

When I converted my phone to a retail unlocked version the Nougat update hadn't been released yet, so I actually got an OTA from 6.0.1 to 7.0 which did the firmware update for me. It should be possible for people to do the same thing if they are patient. But yeah I'm not entirely sure if I'd wait right now either.

It's possible to force the situation by flashing directly to a Nougat version but first you have to manually flash the firmware to the 2.x version before you can do that. I'm finding out the hard way that flashing the firmware is not a simple task like it is on devices like the OnePlus One.
^ ah, i see. so if i understood correctly, if i just convert my A9 from AT&T to retail (dev?) version but stay with Marshmellow and not do the switch to Nougat, i would be getting a OTA Nougat update which will take care of everything automatically, right?
That's what happened to my phone. I did the same exact thing.
I'm in the same situation, how exactly did you change from at&t to retail version?

Hi!!
I just got a Desire S, i' am new to rooting... so i need to know whether i can go back to the stock ROM (2.3.3 with sense 2.1) after i root the device.
This is the only dilemma holding me back from rooting my desire s.
Thank you for your Time! : )
To root your phone you have to S-OFF (turning off security that prevents you to flash system components) first.
You can do this with Revolutionary
This procedure will change your bootloader to a modified one.
To keep the possibility to go back S-ON and Stock you should flash this hboot and when the time comes to restore the system with a RUU with your current version (that can be checked in Settings - About phone - Software information)
A lot of useful info here, all the necessary files and guides here
Thanks a lot for the info!!
But one problem though, my Baseband Version is: 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M and Software number is: 1.47.111.3 .
I searched thoroughly in the link (RUU) u posted above, but i didn't find the matching RUU.

Let me guess - when you power on your device you have the T-Mobile logo
Your current software version is higher then the T-Mobile RUU provided here (RUU_Saga_TMO_DE_1.30.111.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_3 8.03.02.11_M_release), so to restore Stock you will have to downgrade and then update via the Software actualization option in your settings (if such OTA is available) to return it to the current state. This is more tricky process, that can be done flawlessly if your device is healthy. But if you get in trouble and some system components are not responding (brick, bootloop) there is a great change that you will be not able to S-ON again. Happened to a lot of branded devices, reported here.
So my advice is to keep using it that way - it is still a great phone even with Stock software. You can S-OFF and root it of course at your own risk.
It is up to you
Dude you are right man... the T-mobile sign does come up, thanks for the heads up, appreciate it... don't want to brick ma phone... i' ll keep using it this way.
Another small question- do u know why the t- mobile logo is showing up during boot? i just got the phone brand new, and T-mobile isn't operating in my country. The box and the manuals in German, does it mean it's a refurbished phone?
And the phone also doesn't get software update, such as sense 3.0.

The logo means that your phone is branded for T-Mobile. So better ask the operator/shop that you got it for more details. For me is quite strange since this mobile carrier is not operating in your country branded phones to be sold there
As for the Sense 3.0 update it depends on the operators. Probably T-Mobile will release one but when - do not know.
Anyway if there is a chance to replace your device for an unbranded one this will be the best thing to do.

Is it likely that i' ll be getting a OTA update from T-mobile, since the phone's from Germany and i live in an Asian Country?

Yes you should receive the update, because the update check from your phone settings is made on a central server (both on WiFi and Mobile data, the phone connects to the same place in the Internet)

1) you mean Sim - unlocked right? In that case it won't get locked even if you update the phone software.
2)First and important step is using the search function and I known its very hard for you but once in a while try using the search function, trust me you won't get tired

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't know how to do that. I guess I'll hold off 4.0.4 for now...
You need to read some more, before running things willy-nilly without the proper research.
I would advise against running the 2.20 RUU. As I already mentioned, it updates the hboot, which robs you of the ability to flash kernels and radios. There is no upside to it, since you can flash the ROM in other ways. Your phone is bootloader unlocked, and has full ability to flash kernels and radios. These are all good things. Don't take a step backward by flashing the 2.20 RUU.
If all you want is to update the ROM to 2.20, just flash the pre-rooted ROM (which will not replace the hboot): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812459
But in fact, these are more recent versions:

Ya know, you guys CAN extract the rom.zip from 2.2x ruu and pull each image and flash them individually to get the 2.2x updates and keep your unlocked 1.09 hboot intact. That way you dont have to do the kernal flashing and what not. It will be fully updated, sbl's, radio everything.

Thanks a lot guys. I should have done some research. I bought this phone second hand thinking "unlocked" meant I could use it on other networks --didn't know the previous owner meant he unlocked the bootloader...hahaha...I guess i'll do some research to relock it.

Didn't read a thing I typed, apparently.
No need to relock it. Just run one of the stock rooted or custom ROMs in Development. Flash a new radio if you want.
I'm sorry, i really don't know how to do any of those stuff...
I just got the phone a couple of days ago and i am still waiting on my t-mobile non-gba micro sim that i ordered online, now im really not sure anymore if its unlocked to other networks...
I won't know til that sim card gets here, but in the mean time i'll do some reading on all those stuff you mentioned =)
I went to the HTC site and did a manual update, but I dont have sense 4.1. anyone know if the ATT version will get it?
plz help
I have a at&t one x I bought last night that is unlocked and I am using on telus.
The phone isn't rooted and is running on android 4.0.3 and HTC sence 4.0
When I try to update it nothing happens. My brother has the same phone thro telus and has received updates. I have went to settings about phoneat&t updates but when I search it does not do nothing .
An AT&T phone won't get the updates unless it's on their network it seems. Just download the ruu

Bump. I unlocked my Rogers One X a while back, because I am planning on selling it. Since that time though, I have run an RUU on it. I no longer have another carrier's SIM card to test, so I just want to know if the unlock is permanent , or if it gets relocked when an RUU or factory reset is run.
The SIM unlock is permanent and will survive any RUU or factory reset.

Hey, how is it going? Some months ago, I received an used HTC ONE M8 Harman/Kardon edition. It was almost new. The thing is that since I got it, it has a custom rom (Bad Boyz Sprint ONE M8 Harman v2.1 ART).
I recently want to update to Sense 7.0 (currently 6.0) and also update android to 5.0 (currently 4.4.4), but I just can't from the update software section. If I press to verify updates, it just never appears to find something. I think it has to be something related with the fact that it is not the original rom. The phone was bought in US but I'm not in the US. I'm just worried that the ROM was installed in order to function out of the US, I mean, with other network.
So, I'm asking if you think that uninstalling the custom ROM may affect negatively to my phone.
Hi.
It is a Sprint based ROM, so going back to stock shouldn't affect it.
You could run the RUU that is available on the official US HTC website. But please realize that Sense 7 isn't out yet. If you go back to stock you will get the update via OTA when it is available.
Here is a link for the Sprint Harman/Kardon RUU. Scroll down to the manual update instructions and read them. The RUU download is at the end of them.
All data on your phone will be erased, so make a backup of anything important to you.
Also, if you are S-On, you will have to relock your bootloader first. If S-Off it is not necessary. You can check if you are S-Off by booting to your bootloader (turn off your phone, then boot it by holding power+vol. down).
If you are S-Off, it will say at the top under where it says ***unlocked***.
If not you will have to use ADB/fastboot to relock it with this command:
fastboot oem lock
Then run the RUU, and you will be stock Lollipop.

Can't get my phone recognized in HTC Sync Manager, as the process of the manual update indicates. I already toggled debug usb, re-installed software, selected mode on the phone, etc. And nothing seems to happen. Can't find either the solution online. And the Sync manager is at the last update.
I just picked up an HTC One A9 open box off of Amazon that was labeled as an unlocked phone. After receiving it, it is actually an AT&T branded phone. I'm contemplating returning it, but if I can get it to work like a normal unlocked device I'll keep it. I am on AT&T for my service but despise having any carrier branded devices. I'm coming to the A9 from a Nexus 5 and a Moto X Pure. I got sick of the huge size of the MXP and have been back on my Nexus 5 with the last nightly of CM before it shutdown. I picked the A9 for a few specifics. I got it cheap, it has fingerprint sensor, FM radio (I have a farm in rural OK that has poor cell so the FM radio was a big incentive to buy), smaller screen and expandable storage.
So, I've been reading the A9 sub-forum here and have a few questions if anyone could be kind enough to help me out and clear things up.
1. How can I tell if the device I got is carrier unlocked?
2. Can I unlock the bootloader like normal and install other ROMs?
3. Can I download the official HTC Firmware for unlocked/developer A9 and flash it on what appears to by my AT&T device?
4. S-Off, not sure where to begin. Is this required to flash other ROMs, or just to flash other radios, recoveries etc? If I'm going to have to pay $25 for additional software I'll most likely be returning the device.
5. CyanogenMod now Lineage OS - I was running this on my Nexus and want to do the same with the A9, or at least try it out. Is S-Off required to run CM/LineageOS?
6. FM radio - did AT&T remove the app from their device? I just downloaded NextRadio Free Live FM Radio from the app store and it looks to be able to access the FM tuner and work, but I'd prefer the stock HTC app.
Sorry for so many questions, but it looks like the community here on XDA for this device is pretty small with sparse/spread out information and I'm having trouble finding what I need.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

1- you will need another sim card
2- yes. But you will most likely need to s-off and convert to USA unlocked to get newer firmware. USE ONLY 1.57! Do not upgrade to nougat if you would like to use custom roms or have root.
3-yes, but s-off must be purchased from HTTP://www.theroot.ninja
4-yes you will most likely need to pay the $25 utility from the website above.
5-yes, unless you want to run the one from January 2016
6- yes at&t did remove the app BC they are stupid, you also cannot access it from CyanogenMod or lineagos
Also, I think you can still download CyanogenMod from get.cm. if not hmu, I have a copy.
If you want to know how to convert to USA unlocked, I can help you.
Boot logo is not mean the carrier lock, try your sim it may work.
Try booting into download mode and check the cid and mid. And see if they match the AT&T model, Also see if it is s-off or not. Chances are it is a converted phone. If not then follow the steps mentioned above

Thanks for all the info. I was able to unlock the bootloader but it seems like that was fairly pointless. I downloaded the TWRP and when I try to flash from fastboot it is unable to write the new recovery because S-on. So really there is no way to flash custom ROMs even with an unlocked bootloader without S-off. Am I correct? Before I purchase the S-off tool I'm going to contact Amazon and see what they can do since they clearly mislabeled the item listing. Thanks again for the help. I'll let you know if I decide on doing the conversion.

Before I purchase the S-off tool I'm going to contact Amazon and see what they can do since they clearly mislabeled the item listing. Thanks again for the help. I'll let you know if I decide on doing the conversion.
I have an AT&T sim so all is fine. I took the Amazon listing as a fully unlocked device but it looks to just be a AT&T carrier unlocked device.
In download mode I have the following info. I don't see any CID or MID numbers.
*** UNLOCKED ***
htc_hiaeul PVT S-ON
LK-1.0.0.0000
[email protected]
OpenDSP-6.8.5.00190-8952_1013
OS-1.27.502.5

It is an unlocked phone, but not converted. That is still running the AT&T software and still s-on. Lime I said, the steps are posted above to convert. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask
Did you try to flash recovery in bootloader mode? in my case download mode doesnt work either but when I flash in bootloader mode it went through (without s-off)

You don't flash things from fastboot/bootloader. If you want to flash use "ADB reboot download" or boot while holding power+volume down

Sorry, yes I was in download mode. I wasn't thinking clearly though and was trying to flash recovery before unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev. I got TWRP installed successfully earlier today.

Good news is I was able to contact Amazon support and tell them about the incorrect item listing. I talked them into giving me a 25% refund on my purchase for the mistake. With that credit I got Sunshine purchased and have succesfully installed SuperSU and completed S-OFF on the latest RUU for AT&T. This evening I'll see if I can complete the conversion process and get over to the unlocked/developer RUU.

See above. I forgot to unlock bootloader first. Once I did that I was able to flash via ADB just fine.
Thanks again to everyone for the help.
Cool, and you are so lucky

One thing!! Don't flash the nougat RUU. Just flash the 1.57 RUU if you want to use custom roms, as anything above 1.57 is newer firmware that is not compatible with custom roms at this time and is not downgradeable.

Noted! Thanks
I have two HTC a9 phones that are unlocked AT&T being used on t-mobile. They are not putting out the software update and I need help or step by step instructions how to do it through the HTC developer. The phones are android 6.0 software number 1.27.502.5. I saw that I can't go directly to the update because mine starts with a 1, but that's about as far as I could find. I searched the site and faq and can't find exact directions how or have many things I don't know what they mean. I can follow the directions as I got them to work on t-mobile with no problem enter the codes. If there are step by step how to get to bootloader, soff and everything I can do it.

First you'll need s-off on both phones so that's a USD 50$ investment right at the beginning for 2 Sunshine S-OFF licenses.
http://theroot.ninja/purchase.html
Once s-off you'll first need to change your CID from CWS_001 to BS_US001 using this fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem writecid BS_US001
Then you'll need to flash a marshmallow US Unlocked RUU and take all the ota update until the latest Nougat version
or
Flash a US Unlocked Nougat firmware and finally the latest US Unlcoked Nougat ruu
How to is explained in the ruu collection thread at post #2
I was going to do the root then s off the boot load or whatever order is required. I noticed that my phone says it is locked however it works on t-mobile. It is a AT&T phone does this matter? What is my first step to get AT&T off this phone so I can get the latest update?
Are there places to just take your phone and have them rooted and updated to unlocked/developer mode?
IF there are would be cheaper just to do it your self... Tutorials are available and if followed step by step isnt hard at all....
