Almost every Android phone. It is a known problem.
I don't seem to have an issue with it.
When it reaches 75%, my bar is 3/4s. When it's 50, its half-way...etc...etc...

Awsome job answering 3 questions with a random statement.
I know the phone stores the info about the battery in a file. This file includes the max charge the battery can charge too. There is a method somewhere on these forums that show how to drain your battery, wipe the file, then do a full charge so the phone can relearn the battery and the correct settings get saved.
I believe flashing new roms and doing storage wipes can cause this file to be removed and created with false info.

No... It has nothing to do with this. Every Android phone I've had... Regardless of whether it is brand new, stock, rooted, flashed, new kernel, anything... Doesn't matter.

You have tokinda program the Lion Batt internal charger first, you charge them full->run till dead--> repeat process 2 times and then the system will be way more accurate. Try this and reply in about 3 days the results.

Honestly, if "it" truly bothers you, why not just put the overlay ontop so you get the "real" percentage.
It's work just fine for me, usually +/- 3% at most, works great on froyo.

I'm trying to understand how android calculates battery percentage, and from my testing it seems that the battery meter is hard coded into each particular phone model. This link seems to kinda verify this.

How abouts do you calibrate the visual battery indicator at the top of the notification bar to be within 3%??
Are you talking about something else like the battery charge status reading?
I've experienced the same problem as the OP on all my Android phones as well. It is a problem when you think you have 75% charge and all the sudden you are getting low battery warnings.

oh yea? mine goes to nine percent...and takes forever for it to shut down. only when i shut down the phone or reboot it, does it not come back on. lol

10 min a go I back from SSC because I have problems with battery/ charging and foulty speaker
Italian Job 1.0.0 - big battery drain and battery go dawn after restart by 30-60%!
XXMC8 - no battery drain but battery go dawn after restart by 30-60%!
Stock UK GB XXLK7 -no battery drain but battery go dawn after restart by 30-60%!
So I bought new original samsung battery 1500mAh - no changes
So I bought batttery 3500mAh with special cover - no vissible battery drain, this battery can handle my phone by ~ 20 hours of playing AVI movie, 720p in loop in MX Player so very good score but battery go dawn after restart by 30-60%!
All battery was tested in my Ace 2 and in my girlfriend Ace 2 (she have fully working phone with no problems) and she have good scores on all batteries but best is on 3500mAh with special cover ( above x2 than standard)
So i went to SSC and they: (stock GB, 0 flash counters)
- take my phone without documents on free guarantees (only box)
- I must come back for that phone in this friday
This above is for + but:
- they **** that work because I have in my ducuments copy a lot of bugs! (street , town)
- they checked my speaker in noisy room (it did not take nearly as booming)
- for those guys after restart when phone loses 30% battery power is normal!
So I go after tomorrow for my phone and we will see ( They will make updates to JB! and they change speaker/ charging module)

I really want to know what the whole battery dropping after restart thing is about, forever happening to me and sometimes the battery completely dies. It was the same on my original Ace S5830 I got a few years ago.

I must agree with you guys regarding battery drain. It's suspicios and I am also aware of a fast battery drain from 100% to 65% in just a couple of hours, or very fast after a restart.
Maybe this is the way android should work. I was thinking there was a problem with my phone, but seeing similar behaviour with yours, it must be something related to the android system.

I thought that is not really a battery draining. But it just about battery calibrating. Your phone need to calibrate the battery. Thats the problem.

However, I've never done any battery calibrating..but I read in some thread, need to calibrate the battery, so there will be no battery misdisplay on the battery icon...logically, I thought, our devices will some time miscommunicate with the battery because there are no battery parameter to make the system understand how much the battery stored....
But I don't know if it just a myth...

its normal to see 99% when unplugging from charger, 3%-10%(Max) drop on rebooting. Battery is usually inaccurate after charging, what I do is plug it in then reboot. then it displays the right value after unplugging, usually my battery status is really inaccurate but it returns to normal afterwards (it'll show charging icon even when unplugged and charge to 100 then stops and returns to real level). I don't believe in this calibrations and have found enough proof its useless, I think most xda users agree too. Try searching some threads.

what you didnt post is the page with what was using your battery by %. now how are we supposed to tell you what happened and what used your battery? this thread is pointless because you gave us no usable information. what i got from the info that you did post is that a UFO flew by you and drained your battery of its power. and the thing is, my guess will be just as good as any other guess.

sorry but there was nothing out of the ordinary there so i didnt even think to screenshot it. by a large margin the screen used the most % battery. i thought it might have stuck on but that's not shown in the above shot

stock alarm app, no. but you do have a lot of wakelocks. when the screen is shown off, your device should be asleep. your device shows a lot of activity when your screens off(ironically, not when the supposed battery drain happened though, so i cant say thats why it drained).
Do you have the horrid camera bug?
Do you use exchange at all? I've had a lot of phones (android mostly htc and iphones) hit bugs from exchange in push mode and burn through their battery really quickly constantly trying to sync and hitting an error.
I charge mine on my dresser next to my head, and also use it as an alarm, I'd recommend charging it over night

Stock apps have no such issue as till date.Except for apps that use internet /wifi consume a lot of battery. So switch of those frst or keep ur cell on flight mode. The battery consumption may be due to gplay service, account sync,gmaps etc. I don't own a nexus device but I have experienced this kind of behaviour with my phone sometimes with a hot back cover sometimes.Try using apps like greenify to control this prob(or switch of ur network @ night/use lower cpu values + governers like powersave/conservative)

So, I've got myself a Nexus 5.
Problem (?):
When I'm charging my N5 and the battery indicator reaches 96%, the charging led goes green, indicating that it's fully charged. It doesn't STOP to charge at 96% like to prevent overcharging, it just shows green led at 96% and continues to charge to 100%. It thought the problem may be the stock kernel that comes with Cataclysm ROM, so I've flashed ElementalX kernel (Without wiping anything, do I have to wipe?) and the problem's still there.
Is that behavior normal?
Here are details about my phone:
Cataclysm ROM, 5.1.1 (Jun 20, 2015, stable build)
ElementalX Kernel, latest version for 5.1.1 (4.04)
I got my N5 one or two months ago, I rooted immediately but I believe it had this issue right out of the box. And I'm using the stock wall charger & usb cable which I received with my N5.

I remember a Marques Brownlee Youtube video where he was talking about Li-On battery overcharging - they don't apparently, since there is circuitry in the battery to regulate the charging. From memory, he described it as a sort of "bounce" effect, where the charging gets close to 100%, cuts out, then says "Maybe a bit more" and starts again - and it may do that a number of times. So I reckon that this behaviour is what you're seeing, and you don't have any problem.

Now I know that everything's behaving normal. I almost thought that I have to replace the battery - and it's non removeable, so that would be a hard nut for me to crack, even with the right tools.
Last question, if I would replace my current N5 battery with another (original) battery, would the 'problem' vanish? Now I know, everything's OK.. but I'm a sorta perfectionist when it comes to devices. In other words, is that behavior related to the battery?

So the answer to your question is: no, a new battery will (most likely) make no difference at all - a lot of trouble, risk and expense for nothing. I leave my phone on a charging pad every night, on a timer switching off around 03:00, and it's usually around 95-97% in the morning. Like you, I'd much prefer 100%, but I've learned to live with it, especially as my Nexus 6 very rarely drops below 50% during the day - I'm a light user.
And a word of warning to anyone reading this. We tend to go looking for solutions to problems we've already suffered, when it can be too late. I managed a few months ago to drain my Nexus 5 battery down to zero, and when I recharged it the radio was stone dead - no SIM recognised, no data service (but wifi ok), no phone calls, no texts. There are many people reporting the same thing, so beware:
DON'T LET YOUR NEXUS 5 BATTERY DRAIN TO ZERO!!!

There is no need for you to replace your battery - the percentage issue might be solved with a simple battery calibration.
But just to answer your question, the hardest part when replacing the battery is getting the old one out since it's glued in pretty hard.

As far as I know, this issue is software side, not hardware. Have you ever encountered this problem before ? On my ROM (which is SAOSP), the LED started turning green at 95%. This could also mean that the green LED is set to appear at 95% - 96% charge.

Yes, I've thought about that too. The LED could be the problem. Is there some sort of workaround for this?
And no, I'm encountering this for the first time. I've rooted and flashed Cataclysm ROM right after I unpacked my N5, so I don't know if the problem was on stock too.

You'll spend a lot of time and energy on this (you already have...) and the concensus seems to be that it's not worth the trouble. If you run down your battery you risk bricking the radio (and I know that GtrCraft is saying only until the phone shuts down, not drained to zero) but really, why take the risk of damaging a beautiful device for such a minor reason?

did you said charging LED ? wooh I've been using this device for 2-3 months and never seen LED blink when full charged !!
you are using any app or something for that ? bcz i'm on stock and i can't see any option to turn it on and No charging light for me at all !

I'm running a custom ROM (Cataclysm), so that's probably why.

Oh..i thought you were fully stock before flashing custom kernel.
Running kitkat, battery recently replaced. all good for a month.
Yesterday the phone suddenly switched off , i switched it on again and the battery had jumped down about 40%.
It crashed again but then remained stable for the rest of the day.
Tonight (at 50% battery remaining) i got a sudden warning "6% battery remaining" and it crashed again, i switched on again and the battery went back to normal , around 40%, stable since.
Any ideas or is the phone on the way out ?
Did you buy an official N5 battery? It looks like a faulty battery...

It can't do any harm but it won't help in this situation.
Try the following:
1. Let the battery go to 5% then charge your device to 100%
2. Disconnect the cable
3. Reconnect it and check if the battery level is at 100%. If not keep charging. If 100% disconnect and reboot. Then reconnect until 100%
These steps worked for some users (even if steps 1 & 2 should be enough IMHO).
Moreover you can try to remove apps or flash the factory images to check if the problem persists. If nothing works then your last attempt is to send it back to ReplaceBase.

I guess. Anyway you should follow the above steps and clean up your device by removing useless apps/features. Finally flashing factory images is sometimes a good thing to start from scratch.

I just tried your first suggestion, charged till 100% then disconnect, it immediately dropped to 99% so i recharged to 100%
Then disconnected and rebooted, weirdly when the phone rebooted it said the battery was now at 19% ,
Back on charge again.
Ugh.... Good luck but I would bet on a faulty battery. You'll probably have to send it back if you can use the warranty.
Did you have the same issue after receiving the new battery? Did you change several things of your setup (kernel, new apps...)?
Going from 100% to 19% can't be explained by the above thread. IMO no apps, no kernel, no software can explain this drop. Some folks say that it can also be caused by the motherboard...
Replacebase have promised to send me out a new battery , they too think its likely a dodgy battery, top customer service so far, hopefully it wont take too long to arrive.
I didnt change anything on my phone, perhaps updated some apps , its stock Kitkat,,, meanwhile Is there any way to check the health of the motherboard ? i don't like the sound of that.

Without profesionnal tools we can't check this AFAIK. Don't worry about the motherboard. It was only a suggestion reported by a few users. Chances are your problem will be solved after receiving the new battery.
ok thought as much, battery charged up to 100%, rebooted and now at 60%.
Ill put back in the old battery for now and see how it behaves. thanks for you help
