How to Transfer Photos from Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus to Computer - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

There are many useful applications on the market that can transfer photos between your S8+ and computer. However, most of them require payment or additional software on your computer. If you don’t want to spend money or install applications on your pc, then here’s AirMore for you. This can be accessible with Mozilla, Chrome, and Safari browsers.
AirMore is an online application that allows you to transfer files between Android/iOS and computer for free. Plus, it serves as an alternative to any phone manager because aside from exporting, you can import, delete, and organize your files [i.e. photos, music, videos, and documents]. All of these are done wirelessly. And while other sharing apps compress your file, the app maintains the original resolution of your pictures or videos. Meaning, what you have on your phone will be moved to your computer as is. Regardless of these useful functions, it has a very user friendly interface. This made the app a good choice for everyone. So, without further ado, here’s the step-by-step process on how you can copy photos from S8+ to computer.

Steps:
Search for AirMore on the Google Play Store and install it on your S8+. Open the program and proceed to step 2.
On your browser, navigate to the web address shown on your phone. Launch the application by clicking “Launch AirMore Web to Connect”.
Connect your phone by QR code or radar function. Make sure that your phone and computer are connected to the same network.
Scan QR code. On the mobile app, click the blue “Scan to connect” button. Scan the QR code on your browser using your phone’s camera.
Radar. On your browser, click on “Radar”. (Note: Keep the AirMore app open on your phone.) Your computer will scan for devices connected on the same network. Select your device and click on that. Press “Accept” on your Android.
Proceed to “Pictures” and then choose the photos you want to transfer. You will see a blue check on the file you selected. Hit “Export” to save it to your pc.
Additional info: You can move all your pictures at once by clicking on “Select All" and hitting the “Export” button. The app will download the file as a ZIP format.
When you’re done, click the home icon and then press the disconnect button.

Hi,
Read your above. Seems like a long winded way to transfer photos/files etc.?
Thus is what i do....
In device /phone, i select a photo/photos and choose "share" and send it via Bluetooth to my pc /laptop. That's all.
Takes like 10 /20 seconds to do. . !
No cables, fast etc.
Plse note..
My device bluetooth is always on. Otherwise switch bluetooth on.)
Alternative
i just connect my phone to laptop. using C /Usb cable etc
Click on my phone , visible in C drive (Laptop)
I normally just drag and drop
files /photos /music /videos.
,or i edit copy etc)
No 3rd party software or apps needed.!
Anyway, good luck with your method.

wow, it is really an easy way to transfer files like photos, I like it.

Very easy way to transfer images from mobile to PC, just connect your mobile with PC, and transfer.

This is one of the stupidest posts I've ever seen, all you need to do is plug the usb c cable into your pc. Me thinks the dude is just advertising his app.

USB FTW

Not being stupid, but I think this poster is just trying to promote this app

This looks like a 100% rip off of the app AirDroid as well.
It serves it's purpose at times, I do use it here and there (mac android file transfer sucks something awful, thanks google)

Looks like pure advertising to me.

Exactly... why fiddle with cables or applications? I did not even install google drive on my pc. I just browse to photos.google.com to acces my pictures on my pc....which is actually almost never...
Same goes for other files of backups... everything is backed up by Google and/or Samsung.

About How to Transfer Photos from Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus to Computer, most photos can be easily transfered to computer via USB Cable in MTP connecting mode. But for some photos, we can't transfer in that way. Therefore, we need a third-party program to help us get access to them and export them to computer for backup.

I just connect phone to pc and copy and paste, vice versa.!

data folder etc.

Some of us have to take photos for our jobs that cannot be uploaded to another companies servers lol.

Who is transfering photos manually in 2017? Just use dropbox or such cloud service. First, it is all done automatically, second, you have a backup on cloud if anything happens, third, you don't have to think about it.... And USB cable? How quaint...

op mistakes this forum for an iphoo forum, which would make more sense over there. there's a billion ways to move files on android.
i perfer to have tasker auto run folderSync ever night, only when the screen is off and phone is wireless charging, else wait and check conditions again in another hour.
once foldersync gets to run, it moves all files from certain folders to my pc's ftp server (all inside local networked so my naked pics dont get out in the wild, again! ).
the pc has an auto pic resizer script which makes copies and resizes and renames the transferred pictures, foldersync download these smaller pics back onto the phone, so i can still view my recent pics but without the 5mb per picture space wasting part. then pictures can be deleted on the phone if required.
simple

Wait! This phone takes pictures?! WTF wouldve guessed that!!

This post isn't even a question. It shouldn't be in this section.

Yep, just USB-C to PC, open This PC, double click phone, then sd card, drag, drop DCIM folder to desktop or wherever.

Hey everyone
Just wanted to post a reference link to my Mizuu Movies application thread, which is found under the Android Apps / Games section: Mizuu Movies - XDA thread
The application has been developed for Honeycomb on the Acer Iconia A500, and should support all Honeycomb tablets. There's a free and a paid version of the application - would really appreciate it if you'd try it out!
FREE VERSION • PAID VERSION
Thanks a lot!
that looks very cool. Very XBMC like which is a nice Ui. If I added TV series will it bunch all the seasons into one section? Like oh I don't know Johnny Bravo.
Click a Johnny Bravo icon, opens up season folders and then select the season then the episode?
or will I have 5 Johnny Bravo icons on the main menu?
also will there be more customizations in the future if i got the paid version? like something simple like background color or upload my own background?
Looks nice! Think I'll try it.
Great app but doesn't scan /Removable/MicroSD/ for files just internal storage only. Sent him a PM to see about getting it added or the ability to pick specific folders to scan that way my videos recorded with the tab don't show up too.
I would like a Movie app (and one for Music and Photos too) like this one that scans my networked SMB/CIFS drive.
Is this possible?

Thanks! Well, this is the Movies application, so I've actually programmed it to ignore TV show files (although this can be disabled). If you disable it, you'll have multiple entries for each show, yes - one for each episode.
I am however working on a TV Show app, which will have that part covered with fragments, TV show info and info on each episode.
Yes - there'll be more customizations. I've got lots of ideas that I want to do, and by the looks of it, I'll have plenty to do

Thanks! That's a known bug, because manufacturers use different directories for their external memory. I am however working on fixing it, so it shouldn't be too long. Thanks for your patience

No problem at all, perhaps an initial setup window at first install to pick the folders your movies are stored in and give us options for more than 1 for those of us who use both internal and the SD card.
So far this is one of the best apps I have used since I use my Transformer for movies often.
If you need a tester with a Transformer for the TV app let me know.

I'll probably just add the different sdcard directories, and leave the setup / updates as they are. I really like the simplicity of simply pressing a button and letting the tablet do all the hard work for you (finding your movies without you having to specify any folders). If you'd like to remove found movie, you can do that from the details view in the top right corner
Please note that in the current version, all database changes are deleted when you update your library. This means that all favourites, manually identified movies will be lost and deleted movies will appear once again. I am working on something to (optionally) avoid this.
I'll keep you in mind for some testing
So there will be an update to search in external sd card? I clicked on start search and nothing happened very promising though!

Yes, definitely. It's quite possibly coming today with a few other fixes. I see that some people have been experiencing force closes because they tried searching without any mounted memory media. It's a bit foolish to do that, but it shouldn't crash nonetheless
Hey guys
Couldn't help myself - I've released an update, which adds support for external SD cards. Here's the change log:
Version 1.2.5 (July 25)
Added support for external SD cards
Added a new theme (Wallpaper Theme)
Minor bug fixes
If you're using the Lite version, you may not notice the added support, though.
The application prioritizes the internal memory, so if you've got eight or more movies on the internal memory, you won't be seeing any files from the external SD card.
Also added a new theme in the paid version, which will use your current wallpaper as the application background.
I've just uploaded it, so it may take a few minutes for it to appear on Android Market - please be patient
Hope you'll like it!

The upcoming version adds support for both, but it's limited support.
For .mkv files, you're required to have a third party application installed to watch the videos - or you'll watch them without sound (default Honeycomb support).
For .avi files, you'll also need a third party application the videos can be opened with.
What would be great is if you could add movies that dont exist on the device. I have a number of movies on an external hard drive which i connect to my TV. Id love to be able to browse through these on my Transformer to decide which movie to watch without the movies actually being on the device.

Quick tip: Create an empty text file with the name of your movie and change the extension from ".txt" to ".mp4", and you can have just that
For example:
"Avatar.mp4"
The files won't play, but you'll be able to have them in your overview, watch details and trailers.
Just some feedback if you don't mind:
1.) The app looks great. I love the overall scheme.
But...
1.) Could we have the ability to make the covers smaller?
2.) The app forced closed the first time I launched it.
3.) It couldn't find the cover to a TV show that I have though I had allow tv shows ticked.
4.) The information for the Hulk TV show from the 70's was incorrectly identified as the movie of the same name from the 80's.
Just a few things but if these types of things can get worked out...this will be worth paying for.

1) I've been considering adding a gridview as an option, but not sure when this will come.
2) Can you please send a crash report if it does it again? And quite possibly a list of all video files you've got on your device - that'd really help me a lot
3 / 4) For movies that are identified incorrectly, use the Manual identification option (looks like a search button) in the movie details view. Here you can re-identify files. If it still can't find the cover, you can always add a jpg file with the same name as the video file in the same folder. The app will automatically use that instead

App to transfer files remotely?

Anyone know of a good remote file transfer app? I have logmein and whatnot, but i'd rather have the option of just dragging and dropping or copy/pasting files from my home pc to my phone without having to use a remote view.

I concur. Pretty much the only use my cable gets is to charge my phone thanks to this
My favorite method is using the PirateBox method as posted here.
NOTE* I am not rooted so there will be know adhoc but once you start it on the phone it gives you an ipaddress:8080 to go to. do that on you computer and youll be golden
For me, I wanted to not only transfer files remotely, but also 'sync' automatically and found this program: https://market.android.com/details?id=org.pcfilesync. I'm using an SMB profile that automatically sync's my shared directory '\users\mywindowsprofile\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Podcasts' every 3600 seconds (1hr). Works well since when I delete the Podcast in iTunes, that deletion is replicated to my Android's '/sdcard/Music/Podcasts' folder. I really like this set and ignore automation.
Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. I found:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tonido.android&feature=search_result
Which seems to do justice.
I have dropbox, but i guess i should have explained better. I wanted remote access to all drives / files on my computer at any given point, without a full desktop display.
nice app you found , personally i dont like dropbox myself
does it have to be remote remote or are you just trying to find a way to transfer files without plugging a cable in.
SMB filesharing in the Play shop
with one click the whole of your sd is available on your pc as a shared network drive, and it doesnt dismount the sd card on your phone while its on.

[Q] [HOW TO] Content transfer - Cross Platform

How do you get to transfer in the easiest way - songs from an android device to a fully unlocked Nokia Lumia 710?
also..
Where do the attachments in my hotmail get saved on my local phone storage? I have fully unlocked L710 and HTC Titan. Someone sent me a few clips attached to hotmail. I can play it from my email attachment but would like to find the folder where it is locally stored after download, and then be able to play the content from Zune. Is there any homebrew app for such file management? I have File Explorer, but don't know where these attachments can be found, then moved so that they are playable in Zune Hub.
this is a great question that I would also like to know the answer to. There has to be some way to mount the storage and manage it from a pc like you can with Android.

I did not really bother trying to find the answer. But someone who uses Android in my family tried to send me a few clips of music that I really really wanted to hear. Now ofcourse I have got it via bluetooth and that I can access. However, he sent a few more by email as my bluetooth transfer was slow. I had presumed I can find these songs in the same place. BUT nope!
However, here is my progress.
File explorer -> Applications data -> Volatile -> Email attachments -> go to each folder. Each folder represents one attachment.
So I was happy after posting this that I found where the attachments are.
However, when I copy and paste the same under my Zune contents, I cannot see it in my Zune Hub and cannot ofcourse play it from Zune hub!
Zune on the phone uses a database of media files. Merely moving your files under \My Documents\Zune\Content\* isn't going to help. The only way that I know of to add arbitrary files is to copy them to the PC, then sync them using the PC Zune software. Nobody has yet figured out how to do it more directly, although I'm sure it's possible.
Mounting the phone as USB Mass Storage is just not even vaguely likely to happen. The amount of driver writing and re-configuration that would be needed... I don't think you realize what you're asking for. There are deinitely options, though; for example, my Root Webserver app lets you browse the phone's filesystem (including uplodaing and downloading files) from your PC. You just have to use a web browser instead of a traditional file manager.

That does add some light to the scenario! Thanks!
So does that mean that even though we do have homebrew file explorers, we cannot really control our attachments i.e. sandbox issue? I have realised in last two days that our file explorer functionally isn't same as those traditional WM6.5 or Android ones. Hence theoratically speaking yes we do have file explorer but not to its full functionality..which leads me to another question. So ideally what do you use your file explorer for?
Aside from aiding my research and testing my hacks, here are a few things I use file browsers for:
Copying ebook files (.MOBI and .PRC) to the Kindle directory.
Manually editing the Marketplace configuration files (for example, some downloads are even bigger than the 200 MB that Marketplace Config will allow you to specify).
Freeing up space on the phone's storage (deleting temprorary files of my choosing, rather than simply purging the whole phone).
Backing up application data to my PC.
Turning music files into ringtones/alarms/etc.
A number of these can currently be automated using apps, and there are others that could be more useful to other people, but that's what I've found to be useful.
Content Transfer
Well I have been in same situation , I went with wifi transfer option, caz its quite secured and helpful for content transfer, like you can use smartIO App, which is good op

Can't Find Media on SD Card? Blame ROM Manager!

For most of yesterday I'd been trying to figure out why my CM7 G2X won't see any sound, video, or image file on my phone's SD Card. Both the stock Gallery app, and MX Player File Browser, just didn't see any of the media in the folders on my SD Card. And the Music player saw absolutely no songs on my SD Card. And my ringtone and IM tones were messed up.
So, while playing with different settings, on MX Player, I unchecked "Respect .nomedia (Exclude a folder if ".nomedia" file exists in that folder or a parent folder". Voila! I can see videos! I can see my images and songs!
Well, I looked in the root of my SD Card and there it was - a file called ".nomedia". Strangely, the icon for that file is the same icon as ROM Manager icon. Odd. because I had just updated ROM Manager. I deleted it and saw my media files again.
Well, today I saw a new update for ROM Manager Premium. The update states "5.0.1.4 Fix bug that places .nomedia file in the wrong directory if directories are missing." Huh. I guess the "wrong directory" is a cagy way of saying it puts it in the root of your SD Card so you can't see any of your media. And I do have the proper directories that ROM Manager needs.
O.K., I updated ROM Manager. Guess what? No media files again! And that damned file ".nomedia" is right back in the root of my SD Card, same as before, with the same ROM Manager icon staring back at me.
Look, it's not enough that people like me wasted money on ROM Manager Premium because the license check always crashes. Now, the app is messing up our phones?
Hope this helps
Stupid RomManager.
Easiest way:
Connect your phone via usb (with usb debugging enabled), open a cmd window and type:
Code:
adb shell
rm /sdcard/.nomedia
adb reboot
You can do this without a PC from Terminal Emulator at Android as well, just open it and type the following.
After a reboot everything is back to normal.
Code:
rm /sdcard/.nomedia
The problem in the FileManager is, that you have to enable "show hidden files" (or sth. like that), a leading dot (".") at a filename indicates a hidden file at Linux.
But of course you can just enable that option and delete the ".nomedia" file manually as well.

I use RootExplorer which can show hidden files... removed the .nomedia file and while some stuff showed up (gallery pics) most stuff still doesnt (all my custom notifications/ringtones and my music wont show in Ubermusic, Play Music or Winamp. I downloaded Rescan Media and ran it but still nothing.
Any suggestions?

Look into your other folders on your card for ".nomedia". ROM Mangler could have placed that file in different places.
You might also want to remove the SD Card and put it in your PC, and search the entire card for ".nomedia". Make sure you only delete ".nomedia" in the folders that you want to show media.
Here is what I did...
I renamed my Music folder to "Music2" then rebooted my phone. Now after that I went into Ubermusic and started an SD Card scan but didnt wait very long (maybe 10 seconds) then went into Winamp and clicked on "Songs" and I could see it was searching. Eventually all my songs showed up so not sure if it was Winamp or Ubermusic

The Galaxy Nexus doesnt have a removeable SD card but the method I used in the post above worked
I'm cross posting here because this seems to be an active thread
In some instances Media Scanner will DELETE ALL THE PICTURES ON THE SD CARD
Here is an example google bug report on the issue http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692
When a ".nomedia" file is added to a directory that has already been scanned by the media scanner, any jpg and gif files in that directory and all sub directories will be deleted.

I have lost a year of pictures because of this. Before you assume I am making a mistake realize that the SDcard is now connected directly to my laptop and a search of the entire drive (including subfolders) with the string *.jpg gives no results. I can post a screenshot if you like.
Rom Manager caused my pictures actually be deleted and I am using recovery tools that scan the free space to get them back
If any of you suffered as I did try this OPEN SOURCE recovery tool specifically made for recovering pictures from an SDcard - PhotoRec - CGSecurity
Here is a screenshot of my current progress

edit: I just realized it also broke some of my applications that stored images on the sdcard that served as part of their menu system. SCREW YOU ROM MANAGER DEVS. I will never trust anything you publish from this day forward

I'm cross posting here because this seems to be an active thread
In some instances Media Scanner will DELETE ALL THE PICTURES ON THE SD CARD
Here is an example google bug report on the issue http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692
I have lost a year of pictures because of this.

Sorry to hear that. I'm running CM7 Nightly #225 and it seems CM7 fixed that bug - I tried to recreate that on my phone and it did not delete the files.
Quite strange; I was wondering why lately my phone has been weird and not reading any of my files from the SDcard. i cant find my music nor photos ive taken, but when i use rootexplorer i can find them.
Edit - thanks alot!! by deleting the .nomedia file, its all working!
How i fixed it
i used rom toolbox pro and went into the sd root.
Android > .data > .nomedia
and i deleted .nomedia and poof it worked
Thanks, had to play around with folder names and reboot, but it's working again now. I believe I have to post at least 10 times before I can thank a post though
EDIT
Ah, just had to post once and the thanks button shows up now!

Back at 'cha - I gave you your first Thanks! Nice to know that only two people appreciate the work I did.
damn ROM Manager
well, this teach me to never hit the "update all" button in google play now. ONLY update apps that shows changes you need/want.
anyway, after 2 days of messing deleting .nomedia, only to have it come back at next boot and uninstalling apps that was suspect. i finally saw a thread about this.
The thread recommended: remove update/uninstall rom manager
delete .nomedia
clear data of Media Storage
reboot
this worked out perfectly for me and that damn .nomedia file hasnt come back for the past few reboots
Do not allow any apps to auto-update. And I have background data turned off all the time to save the battery.
The only time I have background data turned on is when I'm in Google Play. I always check permissions, (you MUST click "see all").
Here are the apps I have stopped updating because they suddenly want scary permissions:
Angry Birds - wants access to Google Billing Service (****!)
Camera 360 - wants ability to change WiFi state, modify passwords
Firefox - Modify global system settings, access user accounts, read sync settings
Google Translate - take photos and videos without user intervention, view available networks
YouTube - take photos and videos without user intervention, access user accounts
I'm hoping someone can help, I'm having this problem only with JB ROMs
ROM manager is not even on my phone, here's what I do in recovery
Wipe data/Factory Reset
Wipe cache partition
run dalvik-wiper.zip
reboot recovery
format /system /cache/ /data /boot AND /sdcard
reboot recovery
?? at this point this phone should have nothing on it right?
install ROM. (I have tried 5 or 6 of the JB ROMs in the Nexus S TMO develop section)
Copy over my pics and music. I install no Apps, just run gallery and it's empty, even after 2 hours.
Where does ROM manager do its damage after everything is formatted? Is it CWM that is causing the problem?
I've checked /DCIM and /Music on my sdcard backup and they don't have any .nomedia or hidden files.
where do I go next?
Thanks for the reply.
Same thing here. i have only CWM and root.
tried all kinds of stuff like format sd card new rom search and delete .nomedia
installed new rom manager now...
+quick system info shows cpu 100% and batery dies quickly (25% at night to 0 in the morning)
With sd card removed battery goes back to normal..
Today i used another phone, the old one, because of this..
It really sucks and im close to sell or smash it!

don`t know how i did it, noe it`s working , you have to f#@&k it up a little with the sd card, Install/uninstal rom manager and nomedia files (note the nomedia wasnt placed in my gallery or music folders) , hope i don`t meet this in the future..
@mikrron, it's possible you have a bad misbehaving application. You might have a game that scans your sdcard and sends photos and other info to the game's servers. That would account for your bad battery usage.
Install the firewall DroidWall and block internet access to any application that doesn't NEED the internet to run, like cameras, most games, etc. See how much your battery life improves.
Sorry for performing necromancy on this thread but I encountered a problem. It is similar to the one described here (files can be browsed normally but no media-apps can see them. Even the settings>storage menu shows nothing on my sd card but reports that the free space is only 1.5gb out of 8gbs total.
If I fire up a file browser I can access all the files on the sd-card without a problem. I can even view the pictures with the gallery and the music app plays my music files alright, if I select the file from the browser and then use the corresponding program to deal with it.
If I just use the gallery or the music app or songbird or any other media player, they all report an empty media library. Media on the phone's internal memory can be scanned by these apps and included to their library without a problem.
After lots of searching around on the web, I found that most people that had this problem, managed to solve it by deleting some stray .nomedia files that were in their sd-cards (like you guys did in this thread).
So, I searched my sd card for those files (I know they are hidden), both through the phone's file-browser and by connecting it to my computer, and I failed to find anything. For good measure I backed all my data up, formatted the card, restored the data, cleared the media storage data and restarted my phone, all to no avail. I know that the sd-rescan apps are irrelevant here but I tried one of them anyways. It didn't help...
I should note that I have not tampered with the phone in any way (no custom roms, no rom manager, not rooted, no unlocked bootloader or anything else of that kind). Also my phone is a Sony Xperia Tipo, using android 4. Sorry if the post is out of place here... The thread seemed very relevant.
If someone has any idea about what the problem might be, I'd love to hear from them. Thank you in advance.
Is it possible that the nomedia file is in the secured android file that you cant access without su permission
All the way from mars

[Tutorial][Guide]Set up Local and Remote folder mounting using SSH + CIFS

Introduction
For audio enthusiasts like myself, I found myself quite bummed that the GS6 didn’t support expandable storage. This means that I can only fit a fraction of my music library on my phone, and that really bugged me.
So I set out to find a way to connect my music library to my phone, and this tutorial will demonstrate how to do so. In other words, this tutorial will allow you to mount a windows share folder on your phone, either from within the same network, or even remotely! This means you can have your files accessible on your phone as though they are actually on your phone, from anywhere in the world (so long as you have internet of course) and effectively alleviate our limited device storage by 'fooling' our devices into thinking they have unlimited amounts of storage through these mounted folders.
This differs from other more common methods found in some file explorers with SMB (where they allow you to connect to a share), in that this way the folders will be mounted on your phone. Your phone will think that the folder is on it’s storage, which will allow you to use those files in any other app such as music players, video players, ebook readers, etc. Other apps like ES File Explorer etc don't allow this.
I will split this tutorial onto two sections, the first demonstrating how to mount a share on the same network. The second will demonstrate how to mount a share folder from a remote location (i.e from outside your network). The latter method will work with 3G and 4G, heck even G. I will provide screenshots throughout to make it as simple and straightforward as possible.
Requirements for Tutorial 1 (Mount a Share Folder Locally)
• Rooted phone
• Custom kernel with CIFS support (I recommend UniKernel v6 or newer if you're on a GS6, previous versions are unsupported)
• CifsManager
Requirements for Tutorial 2 (Mount a Share Folder Remotely)
• Rooted phone
• Custom kernel with CIFS support (I recommend UniKernel v6 or newer if you're on a GS6, previous versions are unsupported)
• CifsManager
• ConnectBot or similar SSH client
• SSH Server set up on computer with Share folders. My recommendation is freeSHHd
Prerequisite steps
The following steps will need to be carried out on your computer which will have the folder to be shared.
1. Locate or create a folder on your computer you would like to share.
2. Right click on the folder and select Properties. Select the Sharing tab and click Advanced Sharing.

3. Check 'Share this folder'. You can open the Permissions screen to control permissions for certain users.
[Tutorial 1]Mount a Share Folder Locally
The idea behind this method is to simply connect directly to the shared folder over the local network, and mount it.
Having performed the prerequisite steps, carry on below.
1. Launch CifsManager and click Add New Share
2. At Share Path, enter the local IP of your computer, followed by a slash and the name of the shared folder. Your IP can be found in you network settings.
3. If your computer has a username and password, enter those, otherwise this step can be skipped. Notice that Mount Point should be auto filled. This is the location on your phone that the share folder’s contents will appear. In theory, you can change this to a location on the internal storage or SD Card.
4. Click Save Share
8. Your share will appear as below and you can simply click on it to mount it. If the grey dot changes to green, this signifies that the share has been successfully mounted and the files within the share will be accessible at the mount point location.
[Tutorial 2]Mount a Share Folder Remotely
The idea behind this method is that using an SSH server set up on your computer, you will be able to securely connect to your shares over the internet (remotely), and mount them of course.
Having performed the prerequisite steps, carry on below.
1. Set up your SSH Server. I won’t go into detail with this here, but this is a good tutorial to follow if you use freeSSHd. When creating a user though, ensure you tick 'Shell', 'SFTP', and 'Tunneling'. This is not specified in the tutorial, but Tunneling is important for what we want to do.
2. Once installed, and with a user created, ensure that local and remote port forwarding is enabled under the Tunneling tab, and that the port under the SSH tab is open on your router, and not being blocked by your firewall. I recommend leaving the port at 22 since most routers have this port already defined in their lists. You may need to open the port though though your router's web settings.
That should be it on your pc, move over to your phone for the remaining steps. You’ll be using ConnectBot to connect to the SSH server you just set up. You’ll need your username, password, and port number (22 by default) you specified in freeSSHd, as well as you Public IP this time, not your local IP. Just google ‘Public IP’ to get this.
3. Launch ConnectBot, and at the bottom of the screen ensure 'ssh' is selected
4. Enter your username, hostname, and port in the format shown in the above image
So for example, mine is similar to this '[email protected]:22'. Hostname is you public IP which you can find on google. Note, don't use you local IP here otherwise you won't be able to connect remotely to your server.
5. Click enter and you should be prompted to enter your password. Doing so should allow you to connect successfully.
6. Click More at the top of the screen, and select Port Forwards. Select More again and press Add port forward.
7. Enter a nickname of your choice
8. Ensure Local is selected under 'Type'
9. Under 'Source Port' enter a port above 1024. Mine is 5600. Remember this for CifsManager later. It must be above 1024 because of a limitation in Android.
10. Under destination, use the local IP (not public IP!) of your computer running the SSH server, followed by a colon and the port 445. At this step, the port 445 must be used.
11. Click Create Port Forward and it should be smooth sailing from here on out!
12. Launch CifsManager and Add a New Share
13. Under Share Path, enter "127.0.0.1/xxx", without the quotes and replacing xxx with your shared folder name.
14. Enter the username and password of your computer (not SSH server). The mount point should have been auto added. You can change this location if you wish
15. Under Options, write “port=xxx”, without the quotes. Replace xxx with the port number you used in the port forwarding step in ConnectBot (step 9)
16. Click Save Share and that’s it.
Try and mount a share by clicking on it, you should get a green dot meaning all went well. Now you can access your files throughout android, from any network. Note that you will need to be connected to your SSH Server in ConnectBot every time you want to mount a share remotely. Below you can see that I've successfully mounted my remote share, and in the status bar I have a ConnectBot instance running.
So after performing this tutorial, all you will need to do from now on is simply connect to your ssh server in ConnectBot and provide your password, back out of it, and click on your CifsManager share.
Hopefully you found this guide useful. If you have any troubles I'll try my best to help out. Thanks for reading!
A little bump to bring this to the top after relocating from the Galaxy S6 forums.
