Screen Wake Issue - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hi All,
So I have a very odd issue. I have googled and searched the threads, but I cannot find any mention of the same issue from anyone else. Here is my problem:
When the screen is completely off (I have "Always On" turned off), sometimes when I push the power button the lock screen does not come up. Instead, I can barely make out tiny white text at the very bottom of the display that is half cut off. Obviously I cannot take a screenshot to show you. So I push the power button a couple of times and then it works.
Anybody have a clue what is going on?
Thanks in advance!

Auto hibernate. Just make a home screen shortcut and tap it B4 u lock your device

I must be an idiot. Can you clarify? That sounds like an annoying extra step to have to tap an app prior to each time I lock my phone. Maybe I'm misunderstanding?

that text is greenify is working sign ..
when you press power button when it's working, you won't get screen wake. Need to wait until it's finished,
or press power once (to stop greenify process) then wait a little while until text disappears.

No it's a hibernate shortcut you don't actually open the app. just tap it and it'll put everything to sleep then just lock your phone. I don't use auto hide unless I have root. On nonrooted phones it takes forever to do it when you go to lock your phone and in my case it would take forever for me to be able to unlock my phone so I find it easier to just tap the shortcut then lock
Note the lil icon in the bottom right. It just puts stuff to sleep, doesn't open the app

this!
I'm also using the hibernate&sleep shortcut widget,
and disable auto hibernate because of this long wait time.

Is there a widget or a shortcut that when pressed will lock the phone on the spot?

I have a 10minute delay until the pattern lock screen pops up but what if i wanted to lock the screen right away instead of waiting the 10 minutes, is there a widget or LaucherPro shorcut method to do this?
Go into settings then security and you can reset the delay time

i don't want to reset the delay. i want to keep the 10min delay and have the option to press something to immediately lock the phone.
Yes - found what your looking for!

Yes there is thank goodness. I wanted this myself - tired of pressing the power button to lock the screen. The widget is called Lock Screen Widget from the marketplace. Enjoy - I know I did.
i tried that widget but it doesn't work. just turns the screen off.
i should note that i'm also using "Lock Delay" but even with Lock Delay uninstalled, the Lock Screen widget doesn't work for me.
A lot of people are saying that Lock Delay doesn't work with 2.2 but i'm not having any problems aside from the lock pattern coming up at random times but thats ok, it's only once a while.
pressing the power button works fine for me it locks the screen
we all have different configurations though:
I have Lock Delay to accomplish the following:
1. Pattern Lock only comes on after 10minutes of inactivity
2. Pressing Power button to turn the screen off and then on again will not show the Slide To Unlock screen
This way If i'm going to use the phone on and off during a short period of time (10 minutse), I won't have to keep bothering with sliding to unlock the screen every time i turn the display on.
By default the slide to unlock screen always comes up.
Hmmm. Works for me

Thats exactly what i was thinking lol. As far as the OP idk. i know there are widgets that can turn the lock pattern on and off so if you were to turn off the delay and use that widget that kinda solves your problem
Try switch pro widget

that's what a lot of people have probably but the problem that i see with that is that you have to slide to unlock and pattern unlock EVERY time you turn the display back on. am i correct? because i currently have Lock Delay (app) that disables both slide and pattern locks during the first 10 minutes so i don't have to mess with them every time i want to use the phone.
SwitchPro doesn't work, it only brings me to the unlock settings screen, pressing back will cancel out of the lock.

Galaxy S3 - Jelly Bean Update - Home Button Bug

I have noticed since yesterday's Jelly Bean update (4.1.1) that if you have an app open (say a browser for example) and you let your screen timeout, when you press the home button it will turn the screen on screen up and take you back to your home screen. Used to with ICS it would just turn the screen on and you could continue in the app. Now it takes you all the way back home and you have to re-open the app to continue in it.
I was wondering if everyone is getting this same result or if it is just me.
Thanks!
I just tried it with Google Now and it returned to the app. I tried the Android browser and it returned the app as well. You might want to power down, pull the battery, then restart. Updates can sometimes act a little wonky at first. Occasionally (and unfortunately) a hard reset can FINALLY make an update work correctly.
Fixed this issue on my phone. The solution for me was to set up S-Voice, then go into it's settings and check the 'open via home key' option. After this, pressing the home key once simply wakes up the screen instead of also taking it to the home screen. Hope it works for you too!

Yea, that fixed it. I don't like S-Voice so I had that option turned off. Apparently it works different with this update then it did with ICS.
I've actually went in there and enabled that option then went into Application Management and disabled S-Voice. Now, if I accidently double tap my home button it just goes to a black screen for a second then back to the home screen. (Better than opening up S-Voice)
Thanks for your help!
I've found if you use a pattern password the home button "feature", to go back home works like how it used to

Nice find! Now my dilemma is, whether the added "lag" when single tapping the home button is not as annoying as being taken to the home screen when pressing the home button after the screen times out. Having the double tap for S-Voice setting disabled speeds up that home button responsiveness.

I find the lag to be to annoying when s-voice is enabled. A fast press of the power button will wake up the phone without closing the app you are using and you can keep s-voice turned off.

grr, I couldnt agree more. I turned off that feature to reduce home button lag in ICS, now it closes any app open. Hopefully theres a fix
We'll find out. I dislike these small, unnecessary changes that Samsung has implemented. Horizontal pinch to expand notifications is another unnecessary change on VRBLK3.

[Request] [Xposed] Module to Swap Power Button With Vol+

The new m8 just got root, and I'd like to see if anyone could fix the issue i have with the hardware key placement. Specifically, the position of the power button annoys me quite a bit. On the old One it was at least accessible through your index finger, but the m8 must have been designed by lefties!
I'm looking for a module that would swap the function of the power key with the vol+ key to see if that will fix my little hangup with this phone. No pun intended.
Thanks!

I'm surprised this isn't a bigger complaint amongst m8 users. Well, if anyone finds anything, please let me know! Thanks!

I'm also not a fan of the power button being switched. At least we can double tap the screen to unlock. Cuts down the usage a bit.

Agreed, but it doesn't help when wanting to lock it quickly with one hand after the phone has already been unlocked. I'm more interested in that function than waking it. But glad to see I'm not alone in this.

I use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock in tandem with Nova Launcher and just assign a gesture to it which in turn will turn the screen off and lock. Works great.
I just use gmd gesture control to do a three finger downward swipe to shut the device off.

For my purposes, I'm trying to find a one-handed solution. So 3 fingers is no help when the phone is in-hand. But thanks for sharing your idea!

What I did was use gravitybox > navigation key actions and then set back key long press to go to sleep. Works perfect but I am left handed so you might want a different key.

This is how I do it. Just a single finger swipe upwards shuts my screen off, then a double tap turns it back on. Works great for me!
Now if only someone could figure out how to get double tap (to wake) working in landscape mode.
Hey guys -- I just posted a fresh thread for this, but since I assume you all have weaksauce+xposed working...
After my soft-reboot to install xposed, wifi would not turn on. Did anyone else have anything similar happen?
I did weaksauce, phone off/on, install xposed, full reboot (accidentally), enable xposed, soft reboot, then no wifi when the phone came back up.
Any ideas?

screen turns off on lockscreen

When I turn the screen on to check notifications and i expand a notification: text, facebook message, etc..
Even while my finger is touching the screen the screen turns off. This occurs both in power save mode and with power save mode turned off.
Its quite annoying, especially if i just want to read real quick what an email says.
Anyone else getting this?
Nope. Try doing a hard reset
Tried a second s6 and resetting the device. I get the same thing. I also have the unlock effect turned off.
My phone is also giving me problems on the lockscreen. I don't have an unlock effect either so I'm thinking be the problem. I notice when I turn on any other option my problem goes away. It just darkens my wallpaper to almost black. Did a hard reset as well.
I also noticed a huge lag when i tap a notification and then try to unlock. I'm also unable to double tap a notification on lock screen to open that specific app.
I tried using the buble unlock affect and still get the same problem. turn on screen->expand notification of given app while still holding my finger on the screen, then seconds later screen turns black

I see what you're saying about holding the finger on the screen and it still times out. Is it not like this on other lollipop phones, this is my first go with lollipop so I don't know? ...No lag for me, and I can tap then unlock and I'm in the app asap.

Well maybe its cause i came from an AOSP rom on my Lg g2 but i would think if your finger it touching the screen it should stay on anyways.
I wish i could just double tap the notification and it opens the app versus tapping the notification and then having to swipe to unlock.
the lag when trying to unlock after tapping the notification is a little, its not instant like how it would when tapping on a heads-up notification

I just tried again...If you swipe down on the notification to read it, it should go up to like another screen (not literally) but the notification slides up basically were the clock and weather would be. There it doesn't time out until the screen time out you have set under display is reached, and you can read the other notifications too. What you are doing is pulling down the notification without letting go then it times out. Swipe the notification and let go of the screen.

Any way to keep screen from unlocking unless pressing side button.

I where long sleeves at work and when they get sweaty, which is often, the wet sleeves make contact with the screen of the S2 and registers as a finger press or swipe. I "wrist dial" many times throughout the day because of this. Is there a way to make it to where I have to press one of the side buttons to unlock the screen? I know I can set a pin, but that is very inconvenient.
Thanks for the help.

Folding my arms, with short sleeves does this on mine. Yes, it would be nice to have a "don't change clock face" without a button option.

Have you tried disabling the "Wake-up Gesture"?
Turing that off should force you to have to push a button to turn on the screen.

That is how I have mine setup. It doesn't come on unless you press a button
I've always had the "wake up gesture" disabled, but the screen would still come on if touched. What I found today was that if I disabled the always on screen, the one that would black everything out but the time, it would not turn on without clicking a button. Seemed to work good today, though now I have to hit a button to see what time it is. It's just something I will have to get used to.
