Hey guys,
I just recently got a refurbished phone from T-Mobile's insurance replacement. My brother gave the phone to me instead and opted for something else. So phone right out of the box had 100%, used it lightly and I noticed every 4-5 minutes that i spent looking at the screen the phone would drop between 1-2% and this is just me looking at settings and downloading updates. So I figured maybe it was just the updates being intensive.
So I get my case and screen protector and I turn off my phone and let it charge on off to 100%. Turn it back on and start using it like I normally would (keep in mind if I have stamina on) I like to have my screen brightness at the highest while watching videos so I watch 3 videos over my LTE connection on youtube and then I hope into my car and listen to a audio book that's already downloaded. Time lapse was probably about 30-40 minutes.
When I get home the phone is down to 85%. Is it normal to lose 15% in less then a hour on this phone? This worries me because I want to utilize the life log and during my 9 hour shift at work I listen to spotify about 6 of those hours... maybe I have a dud battery? Every where I go everyone says it lasts all day with moderate use... but at this rate my phone would be dead before my shift even ends...

Um what? What kind of phone did you have before? Did it have better battery life? Because the only phone I've ever had that had better battery than the Z3 was my Z1C (usually 7 hours)
Also, max brightness and 5 minutes per 1%? You know that equals 8 hours of screen-on time? IE a better battery than ANY PHONE ON THE MARKET HAS? You need some perspective, your expectations only make sense if you came from a Nokia 5110
I had a iphone 4S before this. My expectations are like this because every where I read reviews everyone says "insane battery life" "Lasts all day" and even the sony site boasted how the phone can last all day with stamina off and with stamina on it can last 2 days and with stamina ultra supposedly a week. This is why I'm worried about what's going on with my device.
If there are better sources with realistic numbers i'd greatly appreciate it to put me to ease.
I just set all the settings on my phone to get the maximum battery life except ultra stamina and even froze/disabled apps that i don't need. Yet I'm still draining just the same, I like to watch videos on youtube and play spotify and watching vids on youtube for about 30-40 minutes I drain about 10% with all the new settings. Brightness is also on minimum now and have that option for it ticked as well.
Just wanted to give feedback on the phone and having it for a week now. The battery life is truely amazing, It almost drains nothing when in standby its like the phone isn't even on at all yet sync is coming in with updates. This is a great phone and I have yet to have it die on me before getting home.
Hi guys,
Background: I use my phone I'd say medium use. Clash of clans, videos and photos browsing, emails, whatsapp. But i hate to put anything off so 4G location bluetooth everything always on. My note 4 has been amazing with its removable battery allowing me to use a phone in this way amd has revolutionised the enjoyment i get out of it. No more switching on and off bluetooth or gps. No worries in the world. Now i need a new one with a big screen and decent enough cam and the only option with removable battery is the LG V20 which to be fair looks a decent phone. However I also see the Mate 9 and whilst it doesn't have removeable battery it has a sensible screen res and a 4000mah battery meaning it should last a full day no worries. And I prefer the faster Kirin 960 and the bokeh camera setup.
The issue: i was on the verge of ordering it when I came across techzillas 1 month review where basically trashes the battery. Yes he's a heavy user but he's comparing it to other phones which do better with his same use.
I don't understand. Is it his firmware? Has the issue been sorted? Is the battery not that great afterall? Id be buying from wondamobile so id be getting whatever international rom they use. Shall I just play it safe and get the lesser V20 if I'm going to keep all things on?
For me it seams that with the b156 firmware the battery is not as good as before. But still excellent I use my phone a lot and most of the time I manage a full day with out charging. I get around 8 hours screen time. I never play games on my phone but use it mostly for productivity and browsing. Occasionally I watch some movies , YouTube and listen to tidal.
Most of the time I use very low brightness as I prefer this for reading.

Ah.. I'm new to this of concept of SOT. I don't know how it works. I can't imagine anyone sitting there staring at their phone literally for 8 hours! I work in the day and use it every now and then there, then when home when the wife isn't having a spazz at me for daring to go on the phone I use it now and then for using Kodi remote and youtube etc... I don't know how much screen on time that'd equate to.
Do you keep all things like bluetooth and GPS and 4G on or do you have to be careful with it like with all my old phones in order to get a full day? With my Note 4 as I say a breath of fresh air that I could keep everything on and just change battery once I got home.
Everything is on, during the day I mostly use 4G. The reason I get between 6 and 8 hours is because I have to do a lot of emailing and maintaining appointments etc for my work and blackberry hub is so good in emailing (mush better than the outlook my company uses) I use my phone for that instead of my laptop. Also I do lots of reading both work an pleasure related.
If i have slow days I can manage two days on one charge easily. In short the mate 9 has an excellent battery. I'm never thinking about the battery as I did with my old phones it seems to be even better than my old BlackBerry Passport
It's the best battery life of any phone I have used. Mine is on 4g all day with GPS and bluetooth always on.
My previous best phone was the Note 4 that I had to charge every night. I only have to charge the Mate 9 on alternate nights however hard I use it.
I have other issues with the Mate 9, but the battery is certainly not one of them.

Wow ok that's surprising. No idea what this techzilla dude is on about then on youtube. He seems quite an honest and credible chap so I wonder if it's firmware related or perhaps he got a dud.

As above, I'm surprised it's this good after the techzilla trashign of the battery on youtube. You wouldn't know yur firmware would you?
What are your issues with it? I hear low light cam performance isn't excellent but it isn't great with my Note 4 either and I can't imagine it's ever satisfactory with the size of lens you can get on any phone. I'm looking to use the Bokeh effect for nice pics of my daughter, is this bit at least working well?
--
It certainly seems from what you guys are saying that this beast will live from morning to evening without even needing a charge for my sort of use even with everything on. Sounds really awesome and might have swung be back into getting this over the V20 again.

I'm on L29C432B156. I haven't noticed any loss of battery life after two upgrades.
I think I have to most recent one. All I can think of maybe the guy plays allot of games or has some rogue app on his phone eating all the battery life. In any case most reviews are positive about the battery so if one dude that dislikes it does sound like an isolated incident.

Yeah the more I look into it the more I think this is the case.
He seems like a nice decent likable chap who I'm assuming doesn't have a bias either way. But according to his "heavy use", when people say they're getting much better battery than his alleged figures he defines in his comments his heavy use as:
" i stream music from Spotify, watch YouTube, i have 5 email accounts syncing constantly, i get around 1000 emails an hour, 7 to 800 Telegram msgs an hour, fb,twitter, instagram, fb msg, /google Plus, snapchat, youtube studio, surfing the web, a couple of hrs phone calls, text messages, XDA, 500 Whats App msgs per Hour. This is how i test batterty life, and for me the Mate 9 can't deliver more than 6hrs SOT"
All I can say to that is WOW! Who on earth links five emails, gets 1000 emails AN HOUR, 100s of telegrams whatever they are, 500whatsapp messages PER HOUR (I mean that's one every 7.2 seconds!!!!). with loads of other stuff running and TWO HOURS of calls etc etc.. If doing all that with everything on he's getting 6 hours SOT then I can say I'm mightily impressed with it! Even heavy users wouldn't be be using it that much I'm sure. And if he can honestly say he gets the same SOT with iphones and samsungs with more powerful screens and smaller batteries all I can say is at worst I frankly don't believe it, at best he's got a dud Mate 9 or more likely all the aforementioned phones are awesome and we have nothign to worry about as 6 hrs SOT with a whatsapp message every 7.2seconds and an email every 3.6seconds plus all the other **** running is very respectable.
Personal experience over the Note 5. this thing kills battery life expectancies.
The Note 5 with:
BT ON Connected to huawei watch
GPS off
No Autosync
All apps killed
No calls
15 texts per day max
Packages disabled
1-2 hours of screen use tops
I Got maximum 13 hours. I get up every day at 8am and by 7-745 its nearly dead doing next to nothing. Android will not sleep and samsung refuses to accept its their software. My Mate 9, buds Moto Z play both on tmobile never have issues. he gets 8-9 hours screen time i get 8-9 hours screen time charge once every 2-3 days.
My Settings are EXACTLY the same with the exception of:
BT off when not using my Sony M1000x headphones.
300+ textsPer day.
No calls
Checking FB via Metal for FB
Email in Gmail 5-6 times a day
Camaro Forums via chrome browser
Instagram
Spotify + many more apps
And i never have issues. Granted i exchanged it because the B156/157 idk which one ruined battery. i have a B138 fw now and it works flawlessly. Its pathetic samsunbg phones barely make it through the day even when NOT used. Im dropping samsung and sprint very soon.
@applehater00
If your main consideration is battery life I do not think you will be disappointed.
But for what it is worth I will tell you the points I do not like about the Mate 9.
The vibration is very weak.
The notification light is tiny and almost invisible except in the dark.
The GPS is poor and no good for sports use.
There are various problems with notifications and some email apps don't work properly.
All these problems are discussed in this forum.

And will the normal gmail app work ok?

Strange though because people are saying the B156 one is fine. Opposite to your experience.
Maybe the battery just goes crazy and dies at some point?

The GPS is fine for ordinary driving use, and it gets a fix very quickly. But there are some serious issues that Huawei aren't mending.
Read through this thread for details. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/help/gps-problems-stats-reports-t3508213
Sorry I can't help you with gmail as I don't use it on this phone.
Right now I have 89% left, 10 hours active, 33 mins SOT. I think I got 7h SOT yesterday and still 50% left.
Compared to my Note 4 which barely lasts 12 hours, and that's idle time.

Ah i see thanks.
Thats disappointing. I may wish ti get back into cycling and if it cant track my ride accurately it sounds like a dud. How ridiculous! Just as i was about to buy one another problem pops up.
I wonder if huawei just aren't ready for making phones...!
It's a shame, yes. There are of course many good things about the Mate 9. They just let it down on a few things.
my mate 9 gets 9-10 hours of heavy use - granted i have some mods and tweaks
XZ Premium owners, how are you finding the battery? My Z2 and now Z5 have never guaranteed me a full day, and now that my Z5 is a bit older I'm charging twice daily. So I'm torn between the Z5P and the OP5, for all it's flaws -- is battery life better than the Z5? I'm particularly interested in dual-SIM, but I assume the battery life won't be all that different to the single-SIM handset.
My last Sony phone as a daily driver was my Z3. Battery was fine on that until I did anything that made the CPU go into meltdown.
On the XZ Premium, Sony and Qualcomm have got things nicely under control - which means the phone doesn't run too hot (which in itself plays havoc with the battery, and can make it near impossible to charge) - and the battery doesn't seem to take much of a hit even when playing video or taking photos.
My phone can still get hot when taking photos and give me the warning, but despite me using the phone heavily, the battery (given its size) works commendably. Especially if you enable any of the stamina modes
I could live with most of these modes enabled all the time, with the only issue being when using an on-screen keyboard (it missing characters pressed), and then the battery lasts even longer.
tl;dr - the battery is good and I'm very impressed. You should get a whole day of usage without fear, and with a good deal of screen-on-time.
I got this phone yesterday. My previous phone was the Z3 Compact which was the king of the battery life back then, but now i think the XZ Premium is better than the Z3c while i use certain apps and it consumes more battery only when i use the Camera, Photos app, Video app and Youtube. I haven't used Stamina Mode yet.
Mine battery life is good, my best was 31 hour running always under 4g with 4+ hours of screen on
I do a day and a half with every single charge at the moment
Thanks everyone.
@Katsigaros, could you let me know how you're getting on after a week or so? I don't plan to buy until the start of this month, so I'd be interested in progress.
@Tonyevol that's impressive for standby, but is 4 hours SOT good? I had the same response from a few people on Reddit, with 5 hours of SOT, but I though 6+ was kind of the norm these day, with good phones getting 7 or 8.
I am getting 5-6 hours SOT as of now. Over a month, I have seen marked improvement week on week. Once we get root/ twrp, we can disable some processes and programs that aren't required thereby maximizing the battery juice.
Little better than Galaxy S7 Edge which is my previous before. I am quite happy with battery.

After the first time I used it i performed a full recharge from 1 to 100 % to calibrate the battery. I am watching a lot of videos and because of that the battery lasts me 1,5 - 2 days. If I am not watching videos I can get almost 3 days.
I will have a clearer view on battery life after one month but right now I am very satisfied with it.
It depends a lot about the way you would use it. For example I'm all days around without wifi connection avaible and of course 4g connection all the time working drains a lot of battery juice. Also having Facebook running all the time with instant messaging always on makes differences. Without using Facebook and limiting display luminosity would grant a much SOT
It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Moto G5 Plus before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Phone can reach 9h SOT easily when on wifi. Battery backup combined with overall performance are the best features in this phone.
Too much improvement coming from 2 yr old htc one m9+ and battery is atleast 2 to 3 times better than that of htc its crazy. I didnt expect this from 3000mah
I have not been able to use my G5 Plus enough to kill the battery. I've gotten to about 5 hours a couple of times with at least 40% remaining. My Pixel would be down to 40% before 2.5 hours.
Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
It's depend on how we use, when we play the game the sot decrease and when we use simple video play like each movie offline the sot is high.
Moto have a gud battery backup, especially the processor done excellent work.
Viper ROM with Dolby / viper rooted stock kernel
At 53%
Best screen on time of any phone I've ever owned. Even better than my original Moto G. Which I didn't think was possible. Getting consistent 4 hours of screen on time at 50%. I
Amazed myself. Couldn't believe it. There are so many things that this phone does better than my lg g5, my dad s7, or the iPhone 6 it's crazy. My lg g5 would be dead by the end of the day when I pulled a 14hr day at work (in our hub 5-7 hr screen off YouTube red, than 5-7 hrs of screen on, maps,GPS , googling while driving around). Got home at 7 pm Friday with 40% (I did a top up charge mid day from maybe 65ish to 90ish.....) But still.....
I am once again impressed. Excellent phone. Wish I would have researched phones ...which I will do from now on. Could have bought another Moto with the money I spent on my lg g5 (extra battery, power button, etc)
Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
Usually would get 6-7 hours SOT over 24-30 hours. Heavy user, but where I live has really bad reception for my carrier, so I get a lot of idle drain from the mobile standby.
I use my phone a lot. Web surfing, forums, games, texting, not too many calls. Best battery life I've ever had and this my sixth Android. Still bootloader locked and running stock, I may not even bother to root this one.
Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
I'm currently at 4 1/2 hours screen on time with 46% battery remaining. I can easily get to 8 hours. I'm running the amazing AOSPA Rom right now as well. I stream a lot of music so I could probably get even more screen on time without all the music streaming.
i just got this phone wednesday 8pm and got a full charge in 1 hour, is sunday 8pm, 4 full days standby time plus 5 calls under 3 min each and 5 hour SOT total and i still get 32% battery left, this battery-snapdragon 625 combo is AMAZING, i come from 2016 top phone samsung S7 edge and i love this phone already. just got the best silicon lottery or what?
Tried to see how long it would last lowest I got the battery to is 31% and that had 6.5 hours screen on time. rooted with greenify. Was quite the surprise coming from a m8 getting maybe 2.5, if I was lucky 3 hours
In 2 weeks, I have twice now gotten 7+ hours SoT over a 16 hour period in mixed WiFi/LTE usage, and still had over 10% battery when it was plugged in at the end of the day. My last phone, a Moto X Pure Edition would be on the charger twice to make it though that.
No root, all services running, precise location and location tracking enabled, Google Assistant enabled, WiFI and BT on all the time, auto screen brightness, etc... I do nothing to conserve battery and on my average day I am still at 50% or more when it goes on the charger.
3 months in now and battery still great. Yesterday for example left with it at 65% around 1 pm and got back at 11 pm with still about 30% and used it quite bit. Compared to all phones I've had or seen in my family/friends circle this phone's battery life is amazing.

Battery in Moto G5 Plus is very good. I usually get 7-8h SoT, but sometimes it increase up to 10 hours.

Absolutely unhealthy to keep your battery draining that long. The longer the period is discharge, more harm to the battery. You should charge it every night, never met it get too low.
If you discharge your phone from 100 to 0% about 300 times, it will lose 20% capacity.
If you however discharge it from 100 to 50% 600 times, it will lose less than 7% of it's capacity.
So charge your phone every night.
Here's scientific proof for those who think I'm speaking nonsense.

Hi, everyone!
I've been using Google''s cellphones since Nexus 4. For me, Nexus and Pixels are what a "real" Android phone should be. Until I bought the Pixel 3 XL.
The camera is great, the notch does not bother me at all. The body of the thing is nice. But there's is something that simply drive me mad and makes me fell like I will smash it on the floor any of these days.
The battery. The FREAKING BATTERY!
After almost a year since I bought the phone, the battery is the thing that I HATE SINCE DAY ONE! It's literaly garbage. As a normal user (don't have any kind of social network, except Whatsapp), I use the phone just for check e-mails, make some calls, some videos at YouTube, etc., and the phone barely holds until the end of the day WITH 4 HOURS OF SCREEN TIME, and look, IT TAKES ALMOST 2 HOURS TO CHARGE!
Updates came and go, and always the same [email protected]#$%% I have no other word to describe it besides this one. CRA!#$%%!#$
I've tried EVERYTHING, every tip on XDA and every relevant video on YouTube and NOTHING! Google's adaptative battery is HUGE lie. Digital Wellbeing as well. Finally, I tried to turn off the data and let only the wi-fi on and a miracle occurs. The phone sudenlly stops to drain 3/4% per hour in indle and pass to 0.5/1% per hour. The phone holds 52 hours with +/-4 hours os screen time with few minutes with data on (I live in a small town and everyplace that I go have Wi-Fi, only use data when I don't have).
This miracle lasted for a short time (12 days +/-). The drain stars again WITH THE DATA TURNED OFF.
To conclude, theres no tip, no tweak, no kernel, no custom ROM, no witchcraft, NOTHING THAT MAKES THIS INFERNAL BATTERY HAVE A DECENT LIFE! It's a crap! Googles sell us a crap with a crappy tecnology named as "adaptive battery".
Save yourselfs for a head ache. Do not spend mental health looking for solutions where there are none.
Sorry for all of these caps, but I really need to vent with someone.
Thank you for your time and let the ban hammer smash's my face!

I don't get it. I am not specifically referring to you, but to the continued obsession with battery numbers. I get that back in the day the batteries would swell, the chargers sucked and you expected to get at least 3 years out of a phone. I obsessed over battery stats for years, never let it go under 20% or over 80% and did every power saving trick ever to massage the numbers. Now, I unplug it in the morning after a reboot and full charge and plug it in before I fall asleep typically with between 30 and 50 percent after a normal pretty hard day of use (while limiting the things that are wasting my time with alerts). Once on and once off every day. I don't remember the last time I had to charge mid day.

It's not about the numbers. It does not get in my head the fact that a person who don't use social networks, don't use much data, don't play games at phone have a poor battery life like mine. I mean, the adaptative battery suppose to learn how I use my phone and spend life time according to my use. I'm not a heavy user, BY FAR! It's not ask too much for better life time. I mean, the phones suppose to evolve not to involute. This battery is the worst of the whole line. Since galaxy nexus until now. I'm very disappointed. Really. The point of my post is only to talk a a little with you guys, and, makes me fell better. I'm not searching for a solution, because it does not exists and I have to live with that.

I just don't see it getting better. The phones are expected to look, sound and feel so much better than they used to. The apps are garbage childish code for the most part, and the core code isn't much better. I just make the best of it now.
I consistently get 4-5 hours SOT with 20-24 hours standby and use social media apps and lots of data. Sounds like you need to fine tune your settings and check wake locks, my device is just as old

Prints or never happened. Don't think bad of me, but I simply can't trust you without proofs. Pixel made me a skeptic.
Like I said, I don't use social medias, don't play games. And what wakelocks/settings I suppose to check?
I can get 3 and a halfs days standby if i just unplug and leave it, not touching it at all. With moderate use , downloading and updating apps, twitter constantly tweeting, facebook constantly facebooking, periscope instagram, windows phone app for notifications on my pc from phone, batterlife flips between 2days 5 hours and 2 days 9 hours. If i was to make phone calls for 30 mins it would drop to 1 day 23 hours but soon goes back up. Just to note, when i first got the phone, i would loose 1to2% every few mins, resulting in 18 hours standby, did some research and my own diagnosis, i stopped it from doing it.
I wake up at 8am. I plug my phone into Android auto on the way to work, and I'm at work at 9am with a full charge.
I play Spotify on the shop radio until about 12:30 religiously every morning via wired cord.
I go-to lunch and browse social, watch some videos, and play a game or two (asphalt or td5).
Get back to work and turn on YouTube music or pandora for the rest of the work day while occasionally using camera and social.
I get off work and usually hop on the bike with my BT on. I usually get home around 10-11 after getting food/socializing/stunting with 15ish percent
I average probably about 4.5 hours SOT.
Settings report "full charge last about 23 hours, 15 minutes.
I recently used my Nexus for a bit, and left my pixel on the counter with no sim, only wifi connection. Phone went on 3 days standby.
My battery is nothing to complain about. You may just be a victim of the old "silicon lottery".
Im 99% sure after alot of diagnosis, it down to device health services not doing its job, it literally freezes why phone in stanby and starts to make the phone produce heat, you can tell straight away if your device is affected, by the heat after leaving it in stand-by.

You should RMA with Google. I recently have because I was having an early shutdown issue with my battery, but if you can prove it is your battery that is worse than others then Google can be understanding and send you a new one. Just fyi, I went through chat in the settings on my p3xl and only texted them. They were very accommodating and the RMA process was simple. Also my phone never takes longer than an hour to fully charge even from a low % with the cord that was shipped with the phone. Battery issues are a problem with Google phones.

Dude I read your thread about the device health. Besides I had never update it, sounds like nonsense to me at all. I'm sorry.

The problem is that I live in Brazil.
It's too expensive RMA it. The taxes here in my country is too high. Waiting for the Pixel 4.
