Location-Based Smart Lock - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Does anyone else use the smart lock based on location and get inconsistent behavior? I work from home, so I spend about 90% of my time here. I set up smart lock for the location. Sometimes, it works like a champ. Other times, not so much. I've currently been "at home" for the past 14 hours or so, but it keeps insisting on a fingerprint or pin. It's making me crazy.
If anyone has found a solution to this issue, I'd appreciate it.
Oh, also, a reboot doesn't help. I really wish they had added wifi network as an option.

I'm seeing the same issues.
It seems to me that it is working after using Google Maps and clicking on the button to locate my position.

I think it helps if wifi is on and google location history is on, along with high accuracy locations.

my wifi is always on and locations are set to high accuracy with history on and it still finds a way to mess up
every time its happening i clear google location history, clear maps cache and data then open map again to check then its right
happening almost always once week
i may try to factory reset but have to wait till weekend, so i have time in case something get out of whack

This happened to me yesterday. I was home but it kept trying to ask for my pin. It turns out my pinned home location in the smart lock setting was turned off. You can manually edit the location and turn it on/off, which I found out yesterday.

My experience with location based smart lock has been bad across three different andriod devices.
Using the Bluetooth smartlock with my gear s2 has been flawless though.

Was happening to me to. Here's what I did yesterday and seems to have fixed it..
Go into the smart lock settings and delete/remove all saved locations, devices, etc. Now back all the way out and go back and add everything back. A reboot might help afterwards also.

I turned that crap off. For that reason as well on the s7e. Imediately turned it off on the s8+. Same issues with the app IFTTT and recipes, sometimes it works and sometimes it wont.

I have had nothing but difficulty with it also. Going to turn it off and try the Bluetooth paired with smartwatch.

I solved it on my phone. I switched off every other SMART lock feature and just left Trusted Places on. Been working for over a day now after having not worked at all for 3 or 4 months.
Obviously one of the other Smart Lock features - voice, trusted devices or on-body detection is interfering with trusted places, but not sure which one at this stage.

Is Smart Lock (Lollipop) working for you consistently?

Upgraded my N5 to its Lollipop Factory Image, and setup Smart Lock to work with my Moto 360. I'm noticing that my N5 will still prompt me for a passcode half the time, even though my moto 360 shows it's still connected (I can even PROVE it's connected, by doing an "Ok Google" voice search). I even set up face unlock to give it another unlock method, and that didn't seem to increase the success rate for Smart Unlock. It seems that no matter what, smart unlock doesn't work for me a lot of the time. To be more specific, it seems like it doesn't work if I haven't used the phone in awhile. Once I put my passcode in, smart lock seems to work just fine for awhile, but eventually it will stop working again, forcing me to enter my passcode to jumpstart it again.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Yes, this seems to be what I'm experiencing as well.
Same here... really want this to work. I assumed it might be because I dirty flashed, are you running a clean install?
same here...
Same here with a nexus 9. Tried connecting it to a moto and to my nexus 5. The units ARE connected to the nexus9 but in smartlock they have status "not connected". After setting up it works until the units are out of reach for the first time....after that it is back to pincode

got no problem at all since N5 is paired with my LG G watch.
Got problems making NFC tag work. I have a NFC sticker at home, i use it with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jwsoft.nfcactionlauncher&hl=en making toggle wifi when i enter home (wifi on) and when i walk out (wifi off). I tried to use the same tag for smart unlock, but it simply doesn't works. Tag writing seems to be ok but still have to enter the pin when i pass my phone over it. Should i use another tag?
Mine works but RARELY

Well, I figured out my issue anyway. It seems it's Gravity Screen. I use it to turn off my screen when I put the phone in my pocket (and turn it back on when I take it out). Because of this, I rarely touch the power button anymore. Apparently, when Gravity Screen locks the device, it REALLY locks it, making it so that Smart Lock can't unlock it, and forcing you to enter a passcode. I've left a note in the dev's thread, asking for a fix, but for now, I had to disable that feature.
Now, Smart Lock is working almost all of the time. I still have the occasional need to enter a passcode (like after rebooting), but for the most part, this fixed my issue.
I guess the tl;dr of all this is to make sure you don't have any apps running that lock or power-off your screen. They may be interfering.

I don't use Gravity Screen, but have it installed. Could that cause the problem? I'm currently on 5.1 Cataclysm on my Nexus 5.
I have added Moto 360 as a trusted device. The moment I add it i'm able to unlock without PIN. However, after a few minutes, although the watch is connected, smart lock doesn't seem to work. I had this issue on stock Android 5.0 (no root or bootloader unlock) also with a Sony bluetooth headphones!
My smart lock "trusted places" is not working. I am assuming it is associated with the recent update to the Google Play Services for the "on body detection."
My Google Play Services has been sucking up my battery usage when location services is on. Other users have been experiencing the same issues. Some fixes suggest turning the smart features off then back and another is reinstalling the Google play services (revert then update again.)
I side loaded my Google Play Services but it didn't fix the problem. I am still looking for a fix so trusted places will work.

Having absolutely the same problem. The "on body detection" feature works perfectly, howeve, the "trusted places" - almost never. I find myself entering my PIN at home every time I want to unlock the device, except for the times I slide it out of my pocket. If Google fixes these problems, Smart Lock would be my favourite feature!
I've pretty much given up on Smart Location Unlock. It's been broken for weeks now. I'm on CM12 and made profiles to disable pin/password/pattern when connected to my home Wi-Fi.

Smart Lock and Trusted Places Bug

I am running stock Android 5.0 on my Nexus 5 (rooted). I recently got the Trusted Places feature in Smart Lock.
I did not want to use Google Maps Home & Work due to the inaccuracies. So I created a custom place. It showed up and the feature worked beautifully.
However, I went to the list of Custom Places, and I renamed this location to "Home". It disappeared from the list. I can no longer delete or rename it. What is worse is that Trusted Places is ALWAYS on for this location. I cannot even turn that off. This seriously compromises privacy/security. I tried turning Google Maps Home on, and all I get is "Home, Home" under Trusted Places.
I would like to point out that both Home & Work from Google Maps are OFF. Someone pointed out that it may have to do with Google Now "My Places", but even then, I cannot turn off the Smart Lock feature.
Someone also pointed out that the same behavior happens if the custom place was renamed "Work".
Anyone encountered this bug? I just want to turn off Trusted Places completely!!!

I'm having the exact same issue, I just wan't to turn off Smart Places but I can't because I renamed one of the places as "Home" and now I can't delete it. ):
Apparently, Google fixed this in the latest Google Play Services 6.5.87. You can find a compatible version at apkmirror.com.
I also noticed that if we lock the screen with a 3rd party widget/app (eg screen off and turn off the screen) then trusted places won't work and we need to enter the pin. It only works if power button is used to lock screen or it locks after screen timeout.

Yes, same here when I use the PowerToggles widget to lock the screen.

S View case and smart lock issue, MM

I'm hoping someone else is having this same issue since the MM update.
When I first got the Note 5 on lollipop, I set up a smart lock with my home location so I didn't have to use my fingerprint when I was at home. I also set up the s view case to automatically unlock the phone when opened. On lollipop this worked pretty much flawlessly.
Since the update though, both are somewhat finicky. Sometimes it works just fine while other times it's smart lock that still wants my fingerprint. At other times, smart lock is fine, I only need to swipe to unlock, but the s view case doesn't unlock the screen when opened. I'm hoping it's just an overlooked bug in the first MM software and will be corrected with future updates.
I have factory reset the phone and done everything I can think of to fix it. It's not a big deal as it doesn't hurt functionality at all, it's just a bug I've noticed. Also, I think a good option under the smart lock settings would be "when connected to a certain Wi-Fi access point" but it's not an option.
Has anyone else noticed this and fixed the issue? Thanks
Same issue. Set up paired with my Zenwatch and it seems to be about 50/50 whether I can slide to unlock or have to use fingerprint.
Same thing here. Its def a bug. I have tried clearing out my google settings, location settings, location cache, everything other than a master reset for the most part.
Honestly it never works right since the mm update. Wouldnt even give it a 50/50..
BUT
What i have noticed is if i simply press the home screen twice, one to wake, then again but lightly pressing, it unlocks automatically. The finger print scanner reads the print so quick it gets you straight to the home screen.. shouldnt have to do this. but it works pretty well to unlock quickly. Plus, dont have to slide anymore and get prints/smudge on the screen.

Smart Lock - Lots of Issues

I tried to enable Smart Lock and have run into a couple issues which no amount of searching gave way to results. I'm on a stock unrooted device.
Is there a way to make this feature work based on location? Seems to not work in locations where I set it to. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling google play services to no avail. Rebooting does nothing to fix.
Sometimes when I try to view the Smart Lock settings, after entering the pin/pattern nothing appears in the menu at all. Very buggy. Does this feature just plain suck or something? I'd rather not use face unlock, but this might force me to.

I have issues like this. Supposedly, smart Lock not working by location is a bug from Google not op. It is very hit or miss

I wonder if this is an Oreo issue and if it will be fixed in P. Very annoying. I may just drop security all together. I didn't have it on my last phone for over 3 years. I like the idea of it, but not being able to unlock the phone while driving and at "trusted" places is pretty useless.

Agreed
And the fingerprint unlock not fast enough for you. I do it in one motion. Pick up phone and unlock just like that

It has nothing to do with speed and everything to do with convenience. Let's not forget that GOOGLE is the one who added the feature. Oreo has been out, in general, for a while. It should just plain work. If I'm at home, why should there be a lock on my device? When I'm out however, it just makes sense to be locked down. Adding a feature that actually doesn't work or works some of the time, is something you'd think they'd have caught during Oreo testing at Google; particularly, as it's an issue with Android, not manufacturers. Even my wife's Galaxy S9+ has this issue.
@thejase
I get that but I don't use it as I'm the opposite phone should be locked when not in my hand never know what will happen, who may come over to visit I have lots of nieces and nephews. One who grabs any phone he can.
But I meant it to be fast enough that it's as if it's not locked.
If you want to stick with
Smart lock have you tried use the voice feature it may work.
Also look into Tasker I seem to remember someone using it to unlock the device based on location. I use it to turn on and off my Wi-Fi based on location. Auto start my music when in my truck.

Seems to be working better today. Disabled the "smart lock" in trust agents setting under fingerprint and security, then booted to the stock recovery and wiped the cache only. (I'm not rooted yet, but TWRP would work for this as well). Seems to have led to a fix, but it could be temporary. As for usefulness of smart lock, I am not worried about others in my own home taking my device and combing through it for all I care. If you have kids or are concerned about content on your phone being messed with, just don't use the feature. For a lot of people, it is a useful feature to have.
This issue has returned and requires a cache wipe almost every day. Beyond annoyed. I am considering deleting my fingerprints or any security. Pretty stupid feature that makes the phone require a password every single time I want to use it, when this feature could have alleviated that in so many places where I know my phone is safe (home, work, car).
Oneplus 6 - Phone unlocks with smart lock off on Android P
I don't use smart lock option in my phone but after upgrading to Android P, even when the smart lock option is off, my phone screen opens when picked immediately as it is supposed to show the screen is locked. Any suggestions please

Question New Pixel 7 Pro: Tap to wake and Lockscreen display not working

I need some advice on troubleshooting this one.
Brand new P7P, turned on Tap to Wake and "Always show time and info" on the lockscreen. It only ever works after a reboot *before* I log in the first time. Once I log in,that's it,screen is black when I lock it and it won't tap to wake.
I've removed the screen protector in case it was messing with the proximity sensor. I ran the phone in safemode and both *do* work in safemode,so I suspect it's an app on startup causing this.
What I need help with is how can I whittle down the culprit without removing all the apps one by one? Is there an app that will allow me to stop apps starting up at boot time and add them one by one?

@zetsumeikuro wait,I don't get what's so funny?
Mine works on every part of my lock screen.
Any chance you're using lift to wake? Besides that, I have everything else on the same as you.
Edit: Just reread your post. Do you have a lot of apps? You could force stop every single one of them and test to see what happens to be sure that it's an app.

Yeah I have quite a few,but I think I'd rather try this first than start uninstalling and reinstalling the lot.
Not fixed, but getting somewhere. This is related to Bluetooth in some way.
If I turn off Bluetooth and reboot the phone,AOD works. I unlock the phone,it still works.
If I turn on Bluetooth AOD immediately breaks again until I turn off Bluetooth AND reboot.
I thought it might be my fitness band so disconnected and uninstalled the app, but the problem persisted. I have no other devices permanently using Bluetooth, so I'm starting to think this is a Bluetooth bug rather than a specific app now

If the fitness band allows you to take pictures remotely, it is possible that it recognizes it as a keyboard and that this interferes due to some bugs

Good point. This is why I tried to uninstall the app and disconnect the fitness band entirely, just to rule it out. Unfortunately, even once uninstalled, after a reboot with BT off AOD worked, but the moment I turned BT on AOD broke.
I can't think of any other apps using the BT at the moment but having a think. Will post more info if/when I get it.
Finally figured it out thanks to the hint by LaNy_6. This *is* down to Android Auto, but it’s not immediately obvious how or why.
To fix I went to Settings > Apps
Select See All Apps
From the top right overflow menu select Show System
Scroll Down to Android System
Select Notifications
Ensure Car Mode is selected
When I did this, I saw LaNy_6’s screenshot for the Android System notification that says “Driving App is running – tap to exit driving app” in my notification shade.
After doing this, AOD/tap to wake/lift to wake all suddenly work as expected.
Please note that upon rebooting the Driving App notification shows again and you have to tap it to go away. Again,no idea why.
I have no idea why, but I’m guessing every reboot the phone was put in to driving mode. I have never connected it to a car, there’s no reason for this to happen, but because I didn’t see the notification it never got exited from it seems. There’s no other indicators that it’s in driving mode, the phone works as normal other than the AOD problem.
