Notification LED Does Not Blink - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Although I have the setting enabled, I miss messages for hours because I never see the LED blinking. I know the hardware works because it lights up during charging and Textra can enable the LED through it's app. Do any of you have notification LED working for non-messaging apps like email, xda, banking, etc?

After searching around the forums and the web, it appears that EMUI only shows LED notifications for stock apps. It will only blink for 3rd party apps if those apps have an option within the app's setting. I am missing so many notifications because of this. Without that blinking light, the phone looks like nothing has happened, causing me not to wake it up to view the missed notifications. I hate this so much! This is the same problem I have with iPhones. You never know when a message is waiting for you because it doesn't blink. The phone could be completely powered off and you wouldn't notice until you tried to wake it up.

There option like Light Manager and Light Flow may want to give them a try for led notifications

Thanks for the suggestion. Light manager works great, but it prevents the phone from sleeping and caused horrendous battery drain. I'll just have to get used to waking my screen regularly to check for notifications. Not only does this look like an iPhone, it acts like one too! Lol

LOL like the quote.. "Even acts like one" (iphone)
I must say I use Lm Pro 11.2 and I don't get the battery drain now. I used to but after a few clicks of the Phone manager my device has settled down OS is B360 L09.

Since I have read this I saw that notification led is working. At least for viber and it is like viber an purpel led color.. I did not saw for regular messages at least for now.. couse all was over viber.. but yeah its working..
Will report if the regular message will trigger the led notification

Yeah, I know messaging apps will trigger the LED, but a lot of my other apps don't get the same treatment. My banking app, my home security app, and even Google now traffic alerts don't trigger the LED. It kinda sucks!

For now it worked for normal messages with green led and viber with purple led..
Will try to see what about other apps like notificstions from you tube maybe..
If it is like you said for banking app and thoese other apps it may be incompatibility with this sistem or just with the setting option..
Becouse if it would not work at all then it would be something different.. but since some of default apps works and some not.. it could be the app incompatibility..

I think it'd a flaw in EMUI, because this didn't happen with any other Android phone I've ever owned.

You are right

So, I have been reporting back to you that it works but for default sms and viber. And that would be it for me
Couse it does not work for other notifacations like you tube and other apps
So you are right, some of them just dont work

Honor 8 LED light not working all of a sudden
I have a problem with the LED light stopped working at all. Yesterday, there was a red light going on for hours, which made me turned the phone off. Today, the LED light just stopped working for any apps and doesn't even lights on while charging. I have switched into the option of setting the screen on whenever I get a notification, but it's not the same as the LED light, because this drains the battery. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this problem? I'll appreciate it.

Did you try a wipe cache or an Hard Reset?

[Q] Message notification light, why does it stop?

I've noticed if the phone receives a text message, the white notification LED starts blinking.
After a while ( I didn't time it), it starts blinking slower
Then, maybe after an hour, it no longer blinks.
This seems useless to me. If I glance at the phone when I have been away from it a while, it would be nice to use the notification LED to see if I have missed anything, but unless it's happened in the previous hour or so, the LED has stopped.
Is this normal?
This is normal, always been this way in HTC's Android handsets
I use SMS Popup to solve this. You can set it up to re-remind you every 5 minutes indefinitely so the light never stops blinking. You don't have to use the popup part if you don't want it to turn your screen on.

The norm I just wonder why the default messaging does not have reminders thats something I miss even the old pagers would have a reminder if you missed a page
Every phone is different. My last phone was a Samsung Galaxy S and it didn't even have an indicator light on it. My fiances HTC G2 has one that stays lit up until you check it. There's no standards, even in the same manufacturers.
I really do miss it from WM when it asked you how long you want the LED to blink

That is not true. I have an HTC Magic and the light will always blink if something has not been read/addressed.
So I'm guessing there is no setting to fix this? We must use a third party app?

[Q] Light Flow/notification LED issue - keeps flashing

Hello everyone!
I recently replaced my 3 year old Nexus S with a Nexus 5. It's my second smartphone and I love it. Naturally, I rooted it and everything.
One of the apps that peeked my interest was Light Flow. It's a bit mind-boggling what you can do with it, but I'll figure it all out. However, I noticed one issue straight away...
Notifications in different colours seem to work. I did a test with whatsapp and it blinks green: perfect. However, after a couple of "blinks" a white light flashes "through" it if that makes sense. It doesn't alternate between green and white, no, they just flash through each other, the white light slightly before the green light.
I don't know what is causing this white light to flash, but after I turn off Light Flow and close the app entirely, it keeps flashing. I have to restart my phone to make it stop (or disable notification LED in the Android settings menu).
Does anyone have a similar issue? Or can someone maybe tell me what boxes I have to tick in the Light Flow settings? It could very well be one of the settings is causing this issue. If someone has a certain set-up and it works fine, I'd love to try it and see if it fixes my issue.
Thanks in advance!

I installed LightFlow yesterday for the first time.Worked well, but after receiving a notifcation for Whatsapp and Gmail (and opening up the respective apps, the notification carries on until I reboot.I dont know if there is a setting somewhere (doesnt seem likely?) or if it is a problem with kitkat, uninstalled for now

Do your notifications work by default? Like, your stock notifications? Mine didn't, but do with light flow. Weird, no?

Yes, notification light works as it should

I tried another app (Light Manager), and I had the exact same problem. Don't get me wrong, the app is working fine, but once I set everything up and I do a test notification, a white notification keeps flashing even after I turn Light Manager off. The only thing that helps is to disable LED notifications in the Android settings, or to reboot the device.
Something is telling my device that there's a notification, but I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks for the personal reply, andrew! I really appreciate that
However, for some reason my phone keeps flashing this white light, even after I turn off Light Flow. I have to turn off the notification LED in general or reboot my phone for it to stop. The white light notification starts after I do a "missed call test" like described in that link (that works perfectly fine by the way), or after any test I do with Light Flow for that matter. And it doesn't stop no matter how often I clear my notifications.
EDIT: NEVERMIND. Totally forgot that I don't have a sim card yet. That's what was setting off my notifications. Weird though that even after disabling Light Flow it keeps flashing, and weird that it was white instead of cyan like it's supposed to be.

Sorry for wasting your time. I totally forgot I didn't have a sim card so Light Flow was making the LED flash because it thought I had no signal.
Still weird that it keeps flashing even after I disable Light Flow, and that it's white instead of cyan like it's supposed to be.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your help! It works fine right now. I'm not too sure how the cycle thing works yet. I've tried it with a red slow flash for low battery and a green fast flash for whatsapp but the result is the LEDs flashing kinda "through" each other. Naturally, with different flash rates, I guess.
Quick question for people. For the last couple of updates I've been getting quite a lot of reports of certain notification types not working. Hangouts, emails (not gmail), whatsapp etc
I know that all the types that people are having issues with have been using the notification listener (quite a few stock apps don't use it), has anyone else been seeing this. I'm trying to track it down, but I can't recreate it and the beta testers haven't been able to either. Just interested to work out how much of an issue it is as I've never had reports of this before.
Hey Andrew,
I tested the color cycle for textra app, and google voice. I purposely got both notifications with the screen off and waited for the colors to cycle. It started off cycling both colors, but the cycle was not consistent. For example, the colors were red and blue. It would show like this- blue....red....blue..red..blue..red....red....red....red....red
The time between colors was not consistent, then eventually one color took over. I have the setting to 'cycle all - medium' under battery settings. Have not tested under charge settings yet. I am not using the 'highest priority' or 'show latest' options.
This isn't a deal breaker, but would like to bring to your attention.
Thanks!

I use it for WhatsApp, BBM, Hangouts all w/o issue on my stock N5. My only complaint is the perma-notification in the notification tray. Can't seem to get rid of it with any of the options in settings. Wasn't an issue with older versions (I'm using the latest)
Ive been using lightflow on my N5 and it's working well
I have multiple notifications set up - all set for 'permanent' rather than flashing. I have turned EMAIL notifications OFF
however - sometimes, I am not entirely sure when, I notice a white (slightly bluish?) blinking LED. I can't figure out what causes this. I suspect it MAY be email (exchange email, not gmail) - but I am not sure - I can't reproduce consistently.
Also, sometimes when I do a 'test model' on SMS apps, no LED lights up. I've stopped using "SMS Apps" and now am using "Hangouts" as a notification instead and that seems to work
Had 2 hours full wakelock on lightflow this morning -from the minute I unplugged from charge
very strange
Isn't the white light you're seeing the default LED color? Whenever I get a Gmail or Exchange mail it blinks white. I don't have Light Flow installed.
Yes I think it is the standard light. however with lightflow that's not meant to occur.
either way it appears to have stopped now.. not sure how/why!
Try turning off your LED notifications in each program and just have Light Flow control them. That should stop the default white light from showing.

Hey Andrew, Great work on this app. It is fantastic and I was happy to upgrade to the full version.
Just wanted to share that I have the lingering notification scenario also. essentially I get a few notifications and once I clear them out and the screen turns off, the light continues to blink. It is usually the last notification that came in (I have different colours set and I can tell that what sticks is what came in last).
To be honest, I wonder if it is Kit Kat not clearing out the notification and the issue has nothing to do with LF. Interestingly another way to clear the issue is to bump the notification with another real one, and then accept that notification (i.e. light still blinks without any active notification, I call the phone and miss the call, it blinks for the missed call, I clear that, and we are back to normal)
Hope this might have helped.
Anyone able to get the Camera Light LED/flash to work? The one on the back.
I enabled it in setting and I've tried all the other ones not officially supported too with no success.
Also had the notification light not dismissing problems too. But I'm thinking I got it figured out now. Hasn't happened since.

LG G3 - Lightflow LED

Has anyone got lightflow working on their device? I can't seem to get certain apps like whatsapp to display a notification.
Can anyone recommend any alternatives to lightflow?
Its working fine here. Have you ticked the checkbox in Settings-Display-Led and then very last downloaded apps? Also see in whatsapp the colour you want it to display.

I tried Light Flow before on my Xperia and it sucked out battery. Is this the same case with the G3?
You can try using Light Manager, from my experience it much more battery friendly.
I've checked my battery stats and it doesn't even appear so I'm assuming it takes near to no battery at all?

Light flow draining battery life?
Has anyone else experienced battery drain when running light flow? My battery life was fantastic and I've noticed a decline recently. I've uninstalled most recent downloaded apps except for Light Flow . I also noticed in the Battery setting that my device is staying awake quite a bit. Without rooting (I can't since it's a work phone), I don't know of an app that will tell me exactly what's waking the device, however my hunch is light flow.
Light Flow Issues
Could not get Handcent or any calendar app to light the LED. Tried light flow and light manager. Eventually went to a different SMS app and that fixed one. Found that freezing the native calendar app was causing the lack of notifications for the calendar. Now it is all working.
No noticeable battery drain.
No notification icons was showing my Verizon LG G3 despite having all LED settings turned on. Downloaded Light Flow and even though it worked, too much customizations for me. I ended up downloading Light Manager. This also worked but it was straight to the point even with customizations.

I was having the same issue up until a few minutes ago. I had installed Light Manager and done all the proper settings and given it the permissions, made sure the LED was enabled and that apps box was checked. but the problem was that sometimes (usually only the first time) when I got a text it would blink at the set rate and others it would blink at the normal stock rate (once every 12 seconds).
The key to fixing this for me was unchecking all the boxes in the stock LED options except for the APP one. This allowed Light Manager to be the sole controller of the LED.
Hope this helps people!

LED customised light not working...only "default" blue light

Hi
Does anyone know how to set up custom colour led notifications on s7? All I get is blue light. Tried light flow and light manager. It looks like Samsung made it difficult for some reason to set your own customised led notifications. Tried the recommended (by these led apps) "Samsung walkarounds" but still nothing. I tried
disabling notifications in Gmail, system's led notifications on ...nothing. Is there a fix for this?

Probably not. I corresponded with the LightFlow dev last year for a while regarding the issues with the S6. Basically Samsung has implemented their own code controlling the LED and it does not play nicely with LightFlow. He tried to implement some workarounds and there were some custom settings in LightFlow to try to get it to work but ultimately it was super buggy and never worked correctly. I ended up uninstalling LightFlow and just dealing with the stupid and unintuitive stock colors. :/

Thanks for reply. I wouldn't have a problem with keeping the stock led but it's pretty close to being useless. Blue light only for all notifications and even that is not reliable...and don't even start with red and green lights...I'm going to stop reading "professional" reviews because nothe even single one mentioned that led notifications on Samsung phones are screwed. Why Samsung decided to mess up this great and highly usefull and practicall feature is beyond me. This is exactly why people stick to Apple. Am ranting a bit, sorry.
Wonder if rooting & flashing custom rom helps with this.

I contacted the Dev in the weekend and this is a temp. fix.
In Lightflow, enable "Switch screen on" on all notifications that's not working, ex. phone, email, twitter, etc. Restart your phone and it should work. It works for me.
I swear by Lightflow. My favourite app.
So you have to have the screen come on every time you get a notification and then lightflow works as normal?
This is bringing back bad memories of hours messing around with this on my S6 lol.

Thanks but having screen switched on and off every time I get a new email isn't really an option for me. It would kill my battery in a few hours.

I already had that setup with the exception of the "device default" for the screen on time. Still doesn't work for me but I guess it's due to the fact that I have the always on display option turned on. This is reinforced by the fact that I get the blue LED until I turn the display on, and then the color I'd set after that.

Yep, that's the sign of the AOD issue. I decided LF gave me more useful information than AOD, so I turned AOD off. The LF developer is getting an S7, so hopefully he'll be able to figure fixes for these issues.
Light manager has been working almost perfectly for me with my exynos S7. The problem I am having now is that I can't find a way to stop gmail from causing the slow blue blinking LED and this always supersedes the light manager LED so if I get an SMS notification and then get an email the blinking blue light will cause the SMS notification to stop. So annoying. If I can figure out a way to stop this from happening I will post it.
i installed light manager today to...and different led colors seems to work
I actually just ended up freezing gmail in titanium and installing blue mail.

LED, where is it?

can't find the LED notification light. it won't come on while charging or anything... is there a setting for this? the only setting i find is for pulsing, but that won't do much good if the thing doesn't even come on. is there a setting i'm missing?

Settings > Notifications > Gear Icon > Pulse notification light.
I think the default setting is on. The blue color (which I think is default) is harder to see than other colors, at least for me. I was able to see it better when changing it to red or green for a given app.
That being said, the fourth small bug which I've noticed is (at least for the few apps I've tried) if you disable sound for a given notification, neither ambient display nor the LED will work for that given notification. I'm unsure if that is intended behavior or not.
How do you change the colours for certain apps. I hoped the led would have been brighter and covered by the glass so it never needs cleaning.
Thanks.

It either has to be baked into the app or you'll have to use a third party app (which may or may not require root).
my pulse notification setting is on. i have an email, a text, and i'm charging and there is no LED anywhere to be found. is there another way to test it? maybe my unit is defective.

Are you looking VERY carefully at the left corner of the earpiece speaker grille (where the LED is located)? I thought mine was defective too until I saw how faint and small it was.
i have a text, on the charger, and i'm staring where you say but nothing. on chat support with google right now. i think mine may be defective but i'll know more in a few...
The LED is nothing special. It will flash for me every once and awhile if I have an Allo message, and if I don't read the message, it will flash as soon as I lock the phone - I did this several times just to get a good look at it. The LED is directly behind the cloth speaker cover in the earpiece. It looks like ****. You can easily identify each red, green, and blue LED when they are trying to display a white color. It doesn't even look white at a distance - you can easily see red, green, and blue. And if the phone is laying flat on a table, you can BARELY even see it. Surely it will not grab your attention unless the room is pitch black. Don't know if they thought it would be cool to do this, but it looks terrible imo.
i didn't finish the tech support chat cus i had to get back to work, but eventually the LED did show for an instant after i got an email.
it showed for an instant, and gone. i waited for it to show again and w/in 20 or 30 secs it did not show. this is what i call a useless feature. makes no sense. why is it even there?
there are so many things about this phone i don't get, and these are not bugs. i guess this is what happens when you smooth everything out for the mainstream or Apple crowd. i'm returning the phone. nice phone, but not for me at this price.
Lightflow does a good job enhancing the LED. Even without root, I now have a charging indicator and fully charged green LED. You can customize other apps too.
With the exception of having used the app for a long time, I do not know the dev, nor have any interest in his/her ventures.
I am linking the paid version as I am a strong beliver in supporting devs that turn out useful apps. There is a free version also.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflow
Enjoy..
Edit: There is another app, called Light Manager, that I have previously tested. In the end, I found that Lightflow is the most flexible and useful for me.

What do you like better about LightFlow out of curiosity? I have the paid version of LightFlow as well but find myself using Light Manager.
Thanks

Lightflow has more features. It takes more work/tweaking, but I can do more with it. For example, I use Lightflow to also control ringtones for some apps, as well as reminder tones. You can also control vibrate/volume characteristics. Light Manager does not offer that.

May give it another try. if I remember correctly, I didn't like the persistent notification that is always there.

I read somewhere that Lightflow was causing wakelocks on the Pixel and users didn't have the problem using Light Manager. Any confirmation on this?

I am running LF on my PXL with no wakelock issues. Battery life is great.
I wish they would put the LED from the Galaxy nexus on the new phones. It had an awesome LED. Theres plenty of space for it on the button.
Been using LF for years. Great developer.
I use light manager pro myself. Just got the pixel yesterday
