Is it possible to flash TWRP recovery on a stock 20f phone? - T-Mobile LG G5 Questions & Answers

I recently got this phone and updated the firmware to latest version, then I sim unlocked and bootloader unlocked the phone. I installed USB drivers, adb/fastboot etc.. but now I can't figure out what to do. I wanted to install TWRP to get lineageos running, however I'm running into an error when I try flashing TWRP recovery. I get this error "...FAILED (remote: unknown command)". I'm not sure why. II tried installing all different types of USB drivers, LG UP, LG Bridge.. everything. Is it simply not possible to flash recovery on 20f? Should I try downgrading to a previous version?

you are literally spamming the threads with the same question everywhere.
please do your research before flashing anything.
no, you cannot flash recovery on 20f, you have to downgrade to 20A or 20C.

I posted 1 in this forum and 2 in another, i've been searching for an answer all day and didn't see why flashing doesn't work in 20f. After I downgrade and install with 20a, should I reinstall both 20f bootloader and modem or just modem?

Because the fastboot commands to do so we're always missing on this phone, just like they are on the g6. That's why we used to have to use sore rooted tot come file before dirty cow was found out. 20F has dirty cow patched, hence why you need to downgrade to 20A and go from there.

that's really unfortunate. Are all new phones like that or just LG? the only reason I bought the g5 was because it had all the features I like: microSD, removable battery, IR blaster, and official Lineage support. None of the new phones have that
anyway on update on my progress: it looks like I finally managed to get TWRP working due to that recowery exploit. Tomorrow, I'm going to install Lineage as well as 20f modem/bootloader and hopefully won't have any more issues, thanks for the help.

Well, most new phones seem harder and harder to even unlock in general. As far as allowing unlock and removing fastboot commands, only seen that done with T-MOBILE versions of the G5 and G6.

Latest for CM11S is 05Q and Oxygen is only available through a flashable zip. So you will need to unlock the bootloader in order to flash it.
You can also wait for CM12S to come out "later this week," which should be available through an OTA.

You can use a toolkit, but I would suggest against it.
@timmaaa has an excellent thread that has been posted here which gives you literally everything you need to unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery, etc.
If you flash Oxygen, you will not be able to OTA to 12S. However, I'm sure there will be flashable zips up the same day it comes out.

Update 6.0 mm full tmo & skinny debloated version

6.0 Marshmallow with insecure modded kernel and TWRP recovery
This needs testing by someone else. It has been flashed on my own personal phone with no issues.
Requirements- Unlocked bootloader, Draken FX's Bootstack -the fixed version by Turbo2012 found in DrakenFX's thread for the flashable 6.0 update. Must be currently on an LG based ROM NOT CM. After install flash SuperSU install zip, post any issues. You will be able to ADB and Fastboot even if you can only boot splash screen with this kernel so you should be able to recover from almost anything multiple ways. When time allows I will put up a source built 6.0 along the lines of Game Theory's Katana ROM. Everybody is welcome to everything I post and I strongly encourage the young crowd to get involved, these phones don't support their selves.

Does that mean a fastboot oem unlock, or the OEM unlock in the developers tools. If you mean fastboot oem unlock, is that available once you flash stock MM, since it is not in LP?
PS - thank you very much for taking the time to pick this up. Back in the days of the Galaxy S1, I had a build environment setup, and a lot more knowledge (it is amazing that if you don't use it, you lose it), but I have a son now, so I don't have the time to invest in all the hobbies that I want anymore. I will definitely be a guinea pig for you. I am not actually aware of a way to brick the Metro or TMO versions of this phone since we have a kdz -- it is not possible to blow up firmware download mode.

I would prefer to be bootloader unlocked through fastboot oem unlock before doing any mods in 6.0. Every single time I did not I got secure boot error. If you make any system change on 6.0 with locked boot it will not boot.
Thank you for taking the time to do this.
:good::good:
So it's still not possible to update from Lollipop to rooted Marshmallow without unlocking the bootloader via fastboot? A secure boot error might as well be a brick to me. Oh well.

The main reason I made this was because I can never boot recovery or fastboot manually ( ex. w/hardware buttons) when you have the insecure kernel adb works when at the splash screen so it's easier to recover if you have any problems.

You only need a "soft" unlock (enable oem unlock in developer mode) to root / install TWRP on lolipop -- no PC required. MM however, requires a "hard" OEM unlock, and that requires a PC.

Yes, you have to unlock your bootloader with fastboot oem unlock. If you flash this without unlocking your bootloader you will get a secure boot error, and you will have to flash a KDZ and start all over.
Lolipop doesn't come with fastboot. So you have to follow Draken's thread to get stock MM on your device. There is NO other way. Once you have stock MM you can unlock your boot loader with fastboot. Once you have an unlocked boot loader -- THEN you can flash this if you want.
Waiting on the debloated version.

I can vouch for this. That's exactly what happened to me when I tried to flash this without unlocking the bootloader with fastboot. At least I finally managed to ship my device to LG for repairs today. I'll just chalk it up as another lesson learned.

You didn't need to ship it back to LG. Firmware download mode is always available (hold vol up while plugging in USB cable -- just vol up, not vol up + power). Continue holding vol up until FW DL mode displays). Then just use the LG flash tool to flash a KDZ. It is a PITA when you have to go back that far, but you can't brick these phones, not with software at least -- they would need to be physically altered

You sent your device in for a soft brick? You should set up the flash tool for our phone with a 10j.kdz before doing anything. Hope you get it back soon.

@runningnak3d
Flashing the KDZ seems easy enough. But how could I fix it without unrestricted access to a computer? And my stock charger is broken without a USB cable. I had no choice but to send it in for repairs. Guess I'll be stuck on Lollipop for a while longer, at least.

Can the bootloader be unlocked on the CDMA versions (ex. Boost, Sprint, Verizon)? If you can I will make a variant for it. But if you can't NO.
I just found out that the unlocked bootloader in 6.0 survives even the .kdz flashtool. So once you unlock your boot in 6.0 with fastboot oem unlock you never have to do it again even survived kdz downgrade to lollipop and update to 6.0 stayed unlocked.

Good day,
First, let me say THANKS for an amazing effort! I've been successful in rooting by installing the H91810j image and performing the dirtycow exploit.
Now, I'm wondering if I can update to H91810k, and still preserve root access, by using LGUp to install the modified 10k image you posted...?
Let me know... Thanks!
Ok I got a V20 today and it came out if the box with 10K is it possible to root possibly through downgrading in lgup or am I going to have to not update and wait for a root for 10k I'm on T-Mobile variant

As far as I've been able to find out (since I was in the same boat), 10k has not been successfully 'rooted' as yet. You'll need to load H91810j and use the dirtycow exploits to enable root.
Once that's done, THEN you can install the modified version of H91810k mentioned earlier in this thread. Be sure it's the modded version, if you expect to keep root access.

I believe all you need to do is boot into fastboot thru ADB and type fastboot oem lock. I may be wrong on the typing part. But that's the general idea. Find out what command unlocks and just do the opposite and type lock instead.

Yes, you can downgrade 30c to 20a, then unlock bootloader and install TWRP.
Is there a guide on how to do this? Thanks
I never found a solution to this and ended up getting a new phone. But that new phone just brokeand I am back to using the LG G5 again.
So now I am looking for a way to downgrade to 20a and the files needed to unlock the bootloader.
Appreciate any help provided.

Hi subaron what version are you on now? If you are on the latest 30C then you need to downgrade to 20A stock ROM first.
You must download the 20A kdz file and flash it with UPPERCUT. Then you enable Developer Options and can follow the info in this thread on how to install TWRP recovery and root. The only thing different from those directions is: instead of SuperSU, install Magisk.
Once you have rooted 20A with TWRP installed, then you copy the 30C COMPLETE .zip to the sdcard, reboot into recovery, and install that and install Magisk once again.

Question [FIXED] Hard Bricked LE2115

Background:
I unlocked the bootloader and then proceeded to flash the device from 12 to 11 using THIS tutorial. When I got to the first "fastboot reboot fastboot" the phone never rebooted. The screen is all black. I can't get into recovery or back into fastboot using the button method.
I downloaded the MSM Global tool and got all the drivers installed. I was able to start the flashing process but get "Device not match image" early in the process. I have called OnePlus customer service. They didn't ask any questions just told me to send in the phone. I would rather fix this myself if possible. Any insight and or help is much appreciated.
UPDATE: I found this information, and it had me flash the India 9 Pro version. It worked. I have a booting phone and can now work on getting it back to the US version.
I wish people would stop following the guide for fastboot flashing. Just use the MSM while it still recognizes your device because if fastboot flashing fails, you end up having to flash it multiple times as it's not recognizing it as the correct unit anymore with that level of corruption.
To get back to global firmware, flash this in the local upgrade tool.
https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/OnePlus9Oxygen_22.O.11_OTA_0110_all_2107082125_downgrade_059624cc7298428b.zip
It is the global downgrade package. It will wipe your phone and when it comes back, you will be back on global software.
After you flash that, go to OTA upgrade and it will say it's going to download C.48 but it will actually install 11.2.10.10 and then you will have the latest OOS11.
If you download it directly to the phone or copy it over with a PC, the file may disappear. Enable USB debugging and use adb.
adb push nameof.zip /sdcard/

Thanks for that! The phone is back to fulling functioning with the proper version of OOS. It has been a long time since I rooted and ROMed. Fastboot used to be a straightforward method of flashing a stock ROM. Doesn't seem like it is anymore.

Glad that it worked. Did you have the bootloader locked? I am just trying to confirm I'm not crazy and that I was actually able to use it with a locked bootloader lol.
Yeah fastboot flashing was the gold standard way to avoid a brick back in the days before A/B partitions and Android Verified Boot came along but not so much now. This device in particular seems to be really fussy about fastboot flashing. I never managed to brick my Pixel 3 XL doing it but I have had to MSM multiple times trying to do fastboot commands and custom recoveries to flash custom ROMs on my OP9. I have got the process down tova science at this point lol. I just went back to stock and rooted it and I'm much happier with that than I was with custom ROMs that were plagued with issues.

Sorry, I did it with the bootloader unlocked.
I might go back to Stock soon enough. While not as big a pain as Samsung, also not the easiest phone I've played with either.

Yes, you can use this to go back to OOS11. You shouldn't need to unlock the bootloader as this is an officially sanctioned downgrade package.
Since you're on Android 12 you need to install the local upgrade APK:.
https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/OPLocalUpdate_For_Android12.apk
Install that, push the downgrade zip to /sdcard/, open the newly installed system update app, hit the gear, and it should show you the zip file waiting.

There is a pinned post with them. This is C.48 for global and yes, you use the local upgrade but since you're on OOS11, you don't use the APK, use the update function in system settings and tap the gear and you'll see it.
Hi i tried to use the updater on android12 and try to downgrade it to .48 but it return error. So i need to downgrade to android 11 first and then update it again to .48?

Correct. Only the specific downgrade packages can downgrade. It will also wipe the device. There's no way around this. Once you are back on 11, you can do the local upgrade to flash the full C.48 ROM instead of having to do the whole OTA process (normal process is downgrade, OTA to 11.2.10.10 (it will say it's C.48 but have a file size of like 150MB but it's not), OTA to C.48 so you get to skip a step if you just use the full update package).

Ok if i understand correctly, i just use the updater to flash the android 11 zip file that you provided and it will do a full wipe and will restore to android 11. Then i just use the updater again to flasj it to .48
am i correct?

I don't know because I didn't get my phone until February so I went right to 11.2.10.10. It is important to update though because it gets you a working OS on both slots instead of just one.

Lol yeah. I'm not too happy with C.60 either. I really don't want to wipe my device and lose my Signal chats again.

I don't know what you aren't understanding but I'm tired of repeating myself. Read what I wrote and it answers your question.

Ok done it ... on OOS11 now .... no need to unlock bootloader can just flash the file directly.
Will try OOS11 for a while and see if it is worth updating to OOS12
